The Mac is not only an integral part of Apple’s ecosystem today, but it’s also the longest-running product in the company’s history. Dating back to 1984. In fact, the Macintosh existed before Apple even had an ecosystem of different products. And that puts it in a unique position today. Compared to more recent releases like the Apple Watch, iPad, and iPhone, the Mac uses an entirely different type of technology: A mouse and keyboard, instead of a touch screen. This has caused many people to wonder whether or not Apple would eventually add a touch screen to the Mac, and therefore make it’s operating system touch-based like on every other product they offer. But ever since reporters and customers began asking this question, Apple has remained adamant that a multi-touch Mac doesn’t make sense. Yeah I see them as pointless cuz most of the windows apps are designed for use with a mouse and if I have a trackpad right there why would I bother touching the screen instead lol
When I had a Windows machine for work that had a touch screen, I went and dug into the settings and disabled the touch screen for that very reason.
i had a lenovo with touch screen and i agree completely it’s really more of an inconvenience
I use the touch display quite often actually just because I want to touch and get to websites or files as fast as possible without using a mouse or keyboard at times. But of course, then again touch screen isn't needed unless you actually need it.
I used a touchscreen laptop for years and when i finally upgraded to a desktop i had to unlearn a bunch of behaviors that were only possible on a touchscreen, so it really does add something.

I completely agree. I have a mac book now and I have finger prints all over my screen because I used to use my touchscreen so much. Depends what type of user you are I suppose. I just think there are so many little things that are useful on a touchscreen laptop once you get used to it.
We all know that. Apple does not want laptops replacing any functionality of an ipad. They do not want devs being able to use their laptop screen to test apps. They want them to buy an ipad to go with their laptop.

I'll be honest, I've been using a Surface for a while now, and I love the touchscreen. I can use it as a laptop with full Windows 10, a drawing tablet, or just an eReader. It's an insanely flexible device.

If it’s one of the old Surface laptops, then sure…. But the new ones are horrible.
Them being ARM based made them less powerful and less flexible. They’re basically expensive paper weights that are only for professionals (sorta) and even x86 emulation is still lacklustre on those systems.

@@Thewaterspirit57 For what folks use em for they are fine. Most people just use computers to write notes, light office use, and web browsing/social media/cat videos. If you want to complain about ARM then you need to complain about apple products then as the same emulation is on it is lackluster on apples. A ton of applications professionally still rely on x86, so you can't even say "well apple arm is powerful" if the app's you need don't work on em. So it's relative.
As for why apple doesn't allow touch screen on mac's or laptops, it's because of profit. Why give you that option when they can force you to buy two products instead? Two in One's allow you to flip into tablet mode so there is no excuse about comfort like this video is shilling about. Surfaces are popular for a reason and touchscreen is a BIG reason why. Apple knows this. There is nothing folks can say that shows otherwise really. Apple has the tech already to make it happen and just disable it on the laptops.
Every time I show my dad something on my Mac he tries tapping the screen. I must have told him almost a 100 times now, that it doesn’t have a touch screen. He has an iPhone and an IPad, so I think his intuition tells him that a Mac also has one. But omg the trackpad on those machines are phenomenal, who would need a touch display?
The iPad with Magic Keyboard really is the best of both worlds.
My mom does this to me too and I hate it lol. When I have to show her how to do something on her touchscreen laptop, I have to touch the screen since she doesn't know how to use her trackpad. I really hate touching the screen if I have the choice to use a cursor.
I just bought my first mac and got the MacBook Air, I love the trackpad so much, I used to use a mouse a lot because I hated the trackpads on my other computers, but this one? I haven’t even touched my mouse since I got the computer
Just because it has a great trackpad (which I also believe is very important and what I like about mine), on the couch when its far closer to me, its way more ergonomic to be able to scroll with your thumb. Same goes for when showing friends and family my display, a trackpad only makes sense on a desk but these laptops are made to be used on the go and in various locations. Having a touchscreen takes nothing away from a good trackpad, so it's not like its one or the other. The Surface Laptop also has a very good touchpad AND a touchscreen...

For some people it makes sense, but for casual users with a small laptop, the touch display adds versatility to scroll more ergonomically in any situtaion but a desk where the trackpad makes more sense.

Nah, iPad can't run many of macOS' apps like *most* of the adobe apps, blender, rosetta, crossover, etc.
M1 Mac can run iPad apps, but that just makes Mac a non-touchscreen iPad instead of the other way around

I’ve honestly never felt the need to touch my screen lol. My cursor and keyboard are far more accurate than my big, grubby hands. I even bought a keyboard and mouse for my iPad when I need to do productive work. Touch is just not as quick, and can be uncomfortable to use over long periods of productivity.

As a student I am totally happy with my Macbook Air. The only thing I miss is the note taking like on the iPad, its quite revolutionized the idea of learning for student. Other than that the the OS is totally superior.
@@insanitylol I have a laptop but I also have a keyboard case for my iPad, and a mini portable mouse for both. As a science student, I don't always bring my laptop to school just cause it's big, and can be annoying to bring all the time. My backpack can only fit so many things. My ipad, on the other hand, is small and always fits and doesn't take much room up. Hence, I bring a keyboard +iPad with me incase I need to get work done at school but don't have my laptop with me... Plus I take notes on my iPad and sometimes instead of writing, I like to do a mix and also use some text for notes, so a keyboard is very nice for that.

I'm not a Mac user, but I have a touchscreen on my Windows laptop and I really like it. I use it primarily to read long pdf documents. It's handy to be able to scroll the document using my thumb. It doesn't sound too impressive, but it is a pleasure to use.
Same as me. Currently not having any, but having touch on is a nice little feautre, mainly for scrolling, but sometimes it just feels "better" to touch the specific thing instead over the trackpad, but can't give a reason why that is.
Wich would be a different thing, if PC manufacturers had something like a brain and made a different hinge for ANY touch Laptops, so they became useable as convertibles, were one would use the touchscreen a whole lot.
Touchscreens for non convertible Laptops are for me kinda like the additional feautre no one really asked for, but wouldn't mind getting it. I wouldn't buy a Laptop because it got a Touchscreen, as it isn't that important. But if a new Laptop I'd want had one, I wouldn't be mad either.

A touchscreen is one of those things where you don’t realize how much it helps until you have one and then you wonder why anyone would not make their laptops without a touchscreen. If you don’t need it then you don’t have to use it but whether you use it almost never or you use it a lot, you will still use it for certain things because it makes certain tasks so much easier.
You are right, they should just put there but touchscreen is the future, and everyone should have a choice touchscreen or keyboard, Mac is stupid

Personally, I use a 2 in 1 hp specter to work on Krita and blender and to me, the touch screen was really needed
My Mac is on a laptop stand and I don't even lift my hands up to use the Touch Bar lol
I have my MB on a stand too and i don't use the touchbar. But when i have it on my lap on a table, i use the touchbar to take a screenshot, adjust brightness and volume, and scroll through yt ads lol. But i have one of those metal stands that litf it up pretty high so i had to buy a mouse and a keyboard...

my experience with touchscreens on laptops is kinda limited, but the times I used it I just got annoyed by the laptop "wobbling" and not being stable enough while getting touched on the screen

Kinda the opposite for me. I have a new Lenovo Yoga and the screen is stiff when I touch it, basically I have to use both hands when opening or closing the screen.
Or when you have a Convertible, even a Top-of-the-Line one like the HP Elite x360 1030 on your lap and you are typing really fast on the keyboard and the Screen is „wobbling“ back and forth.
I own a hybrid laptop for 2 years, and I gotta say, it's a pointless gimmick. Yes, it looks cool at the tech store for 5 mins, but that's all. I rarely even use the touch screen at all for my work due to the wobbly screen and poor ergonomics. even when I try to use it as a tablet, its too big and clumsy to be a tablet. Not to mention the battery life is pretty abysmal. Overall a pointless feature that many Apple haters like to make fun of on the macbook.

I use my touchscreen ATT!! its an essential feature especially with my smart pen. Perfect for doing maths and stuff and also just browsing in the web or marking a pdf document or writing annotations

I have a vivobook and I love the tablet mode. When you're moving throughout an indoor area it's great to have a more portable version with all the functionality.

@@ayo4637 I’ve used touch screen laptops from Windows 7 and 8 and never really happy with it. Windows 10 came in and while it’s been improved, I see it as a fancy thing to have but it’s cumbersome to use for regular day to day tasks.

I, and many of my friends, use the touchscreens on our 2 in 1's, especially for note taking. I am constantly using my Surface as a tablet, and for desktops, things like the surface studio are honestly phenomenal. Classic laptops don't do too well with these touchscreens, but 2 in 1's and laptops with screens that move above the keyboard are a lot better when they have touchscreens.
me too! I cant live without touch screen notebooks... I use them for 5 years. it is way faster to do things like scrolling and drag and drop and just point elements on screen

@@CybernerdShua Dead serious. I gave up on paper years ago, i am a professional and I carry an iPad everywhere to make notes, read and annotate documents. Sign documents on glass. If someone hands me something on paper I tend to hand it back and ask for a copy by email or Onedrive etc.
@@paulconnell1309 OK, yeah. I wasn't sure. Seriously, though, when I first got my surface I realized I could just ditch paper documents and was absolutely ecstatic.
I use HP x360 touchscreen laptop, the convertible option is great although touch not used very frequently. Mostly while using calculator on screen, touch is a big bonus. Also touch pen for drawing and document signing gives me comfort.
When MacOS Big Sur was launched, people were quick to notice the UI elements like spaced out icons, giving speculations that future Macs may support touch input as it appeared to be more touch friendly. I'd say Apple can pull off a touch screen Mac by giving options like Tent Mode or 270 degree stand mode so the ergonomics won't feel odd. See Lenovo Yoga series for instance.
I’m kind of torn on the touchscreen issue. As a native PC user who just bought a MacBook, I find myself constantly reaching up to tap the screen to move windows, zoom, and drag files. It’s the simple things like that that make me wish my MacBook had a touch screen - the little interactions that are just faster to do with hands-on movement.
But for all other things, I much prefer having a mouse. I can’t imagine using a traditional After Effects or Affinity Photo interface with touch, and when I had my Surface Pro, I never interacted with pro apps in that way. It’s the general interface and basic navigation that I think benefits from touch.

I had a touchscreen laptop before. It's great. I didn't use it most of the time, but on some websites it was very helpful, especially if the regular controls were bugging out.
I have recently ditched the MacBook for an iPad with Magic Keyboard and I actually love the versatility of the touch screen/keyboard combo.
I think Apple doesn’t like the idea of optimizing an OS for touch, just to have some of its lineup being left in the lurch (Mini, Pro-machines without an integrated screen), or worse, having to create two different versions of the OS, one optimized for touch and the other not.

2:03 The touch screen on my HP ENVY was actually very helpful. During COVID 19 in July 2020 I had to sign some digital paperwork and the "drawing" park helped me put down my signature and fill out information. The file didn't allow me to type my info so I was able to draw with it.
The only down side is when the math tutors accidently touched the screen and then it activates something.
My laptop as a tablet is too heavy so I just leave it on my desk. Overall I am happy with it.
I have been an avid follower of your channel post I had my first mac, trust me I being an engineer from the field of computers, started of my journey into apple with A Mac and I shall be proud to say that it is does satisfy my needs as per when needed. I too personally think that a touch based notebook is not necessary at all in the first place.

Thank you for making these thorough and interesting videos! In regards to the touch bar for Mac, it is convenient having a tiny extra display directly above the keyboard. However, the touch feature may be gimmicky as using the cursor is probably just as fast for most tasks. Still, I would like to be able to move the mouse off of the screen and onto the touch bar, in addition to having a full touch screen.
This makes a lot of sense. I have a PC laptop that has a touch screen and I’ve never once used it.

I did not think Apple implementing a touch screen Mac one day was possible but you've convinced me that it could happen.
It's because they have to make money off of their products. Unlike Google, Apple doesn't make money from ads.
For me touch screen is life changing. I have a HP Envy and as a web developer is a very useful feature. I can use the keyboard and the screen at the same time. It saves a lot of time and helps a lot on web design and testing. I wouldn't buy a laptop without touch screen.

For those of you who have a touchscreen computer but don't want the touchscreen (on Windows 10): there's a way to disable it and use it like any old non touchscreen computer. Has something to do with device manager I think but Google to be sure.

Touch screen on a laptop owner here, I own a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and although most of my pointing is done with the Trackpoint, (i can't STAND trackpads) it's convenient to also have the touch screen for when you're moving the mouse around a lot/have a bunch of stuff open and need to open/close/select a bunch of individual things (not all at once). I think the Mac line could benefit from this. There should however be an option to disable it or buy a touch-less screen for those that would prefer not to have it, if they're brushing up against it/etc.
That ad transition was seamless, much unlike bringing up the function keys to change volume on the touch bar 😉😉
To be honest, I use my touch screen HP all the time. But only with a stylus.
It would be fine with me if the MacBooks keep their non-touch interfaces. It's nice not having to clean fingerprints and smudges off my M1 Air.

The point of my comment was that I’m glad Apple did not put touch screens on their MacBooks because that would be another screen to have to clean regularity of fingerprints. Since it isn’t a touchscreen, fingerprints shouldn’t be a concern.
Having an iPad I use primarily as my main device, I regularly find myself tapping the screen of my MacBook Pro and thinking “Why isn’t this working? ”
It would be nice to have a touch screen alternative to the track pad thing below the keyboard, even if it’s switched off by default.
I love the touch screen on my laptop! I hated laptops until they got touch screens. I want them to be very portable, lightweight and generally easy to use either way you want otherwise I don't find the need for one and I would prefer a tower PC. But the touch screen, even if it's not the primary choice, does come in handy and when you try a different laptop without one(yes even a mac) it just feels dated and frustrating!
Touch screen on my laptop was amazing. Being able to use it for PDFs especially was great and being able to use it as a tablet was perfect for university. Too bad I broke the display.

I own a surface pro 6 Windows tablet hybrid and while I don't use the touch screen for general use, it's invaluable for doing illustration work because I can use touch gestures with compatible design apps.

I have the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo which has 2 OLED 4K Touchscreens. I love them and find them very usefhl for drawing, art, mobile app development etc.
Touch targets size and hand tiredness due to verticality are just some of the problems, there’s another big one: ‘Hover State’. The mac (and windows) has been around since the 80s and the UX in the whole OS as well as the Apps has been designed with pointer device in mind, hence there are a bunch of essential features that wouldn’t be able to translate to touch because you can’t hover a UI element with your finger, and therefore those functions would be broken. I speak from experience, because windows, ever since 8 has this problem, where they simply add touch functionality without any meaningful change to the UI, and i end up using mouse & keyboard like 99percent of the time, i only tap the screen whenever a huge dialog box pop up, simply cause it feels satisfying to do so.
I believe Project catalyst is Apple’s way of slowly bridging the UI gap between their iPadOs and MacOS, but even then, i don’t have my hopes up about mac ever getting touch. As much as i love touch (especially on the iPad), personally i can accept the fact if Apple won’t ever employ touch on MacOS cuz in terms of navigating the OS itself, there probably isn’t going to be much improvement to the usability / experience. As a Designer however, I wish they would implement multitouch on design, illustration, and 3D apps on the mac. I use a 27” XP-pen drawing display tablet, and while navigating the tools and canvas works somewhat with the aid of keyboard shortcuts, the experience is vastly inferior compared to when i tried the Microsoft Surface Studio, where i can manipulate the canvas and UI element directly on screen, it just feels so much more intuitive. I know the same thing is true for the ipad pro. But it’s very frustrating whenever i switch to draw on my big screen desktop where i get so much more screen real estate than the iPad, but lose out on the experience, cause there’s no multitouch.
In conclusion: I wish Apple would make a surface studio type device, preferably a monitor only as opposed to all-in-one, where i can plug in my mac or my iPad to it. When the mac is plugged in, i’m ok if the multitouch is only usable inside the creative/pro apps. But when the iPad is plugged in, i’d like the touch to be usable os-wide, essentially making the ipad 3x larger on the desktop, while still being small and portable to be used on the go.
I have an iPad pro with magic keyboard. Some times I still use the touch screen to press a button on the screen rather than the track pad.
When I switch to my mac, I have found myself pressing buttons on the screen - but it did not work. I would like touch screen on my mac :-)

I hate my second laptop cause it's garbage, but the touch screen is so useful. It is very comfortable because you only reach up for things like closing a window or dragging a window with snapping. So nice. I really miss it on my main m1 macbook air

I love touchscreen on all my laptops, for lying down usage, scrolling through a page , not having to wait for mouse travel, skipping along videos in things like VLC - can't live without it

The main concern of the touch screen on mac is that every touch and swipe could damage the coating on the Screen
True, it is inelegant and disgusting that there will be oil and all sorts of debris on the screen surface if it was a touchscreen
@@nicholasfong5182 the amount of fingerprints I have on mine are insane just from adjusting the screen tilt is insane so I can’t imagine how bad touch Macs will be plus the hinges will have to be stronger to support the taps and wobble of the screen plus touch screens would drive the price of screens through the roof as they are expensive enough to replace with a normal Retina display

@@insanitylol on Macs there is a special anti reflective coating on the screen which can rub off and damage over time, if you have ever heard of stain gate, that’s what it is that is being damaged on the screen and touching the screen will make the effect much worst
I believe if they can perfectly executed an Mac/iPad Hybrid; with disconnecting keyboard etc. they will release it. But so far it could still take at least 3-4 years

I have the one with the Touch Bar and I only ever use to to adjust volume levels and screen brightness. Something I was able to do in that same area of the keyboard on models without the Touch Bar
Other brands seems to be doing ok with touch screens. Though most apple laptops are used by designers that are unable to use their laptop as a drawing book on the go. Tablet mode on windows 10 works pretty well.

You’re a great “adviser’ and I always look for your reviews. I’m Apple fanatic since late 90’s. But when they include stylus or “pencil” to iPad I was part of harsh critics and I felt betrayed by late Jobs. But now when I move from iPad to iPhone always go with the pencil. Frustrating!
Ecosystem should support the same learned movements. If someone doesn’t want to use would be their prerogative.
For me all products must be touch and pencil friendly. My Mac Pro, iPad and iPhone are on my desk all the time. So I always have to drop the pencil or grab the mouse. Too confusing. One only can dream…
the mac's voiceover feature for blind makes trackpad usable as a touch screen. i meen it's not dragging the cursor when you move your finger on a trackpad, but all items on the screen are placed the same way on trackpad. even though the trackpad is not a screen, you can touch different parts of trackpad and it will say different items on the screen.
I use the Surface Pro 8 and it is the perfect device for me because it allows me hand-writing notes in university but also doing your standard laptop office work and after that you can even use it as a normal tablet on your couch in the evening.
Surfaces/Convertibles still have some design flaws but they matured over the years and i would really love Apple creating and perfectioning Convertibles. Microsoft already did some great work over the last years.

@@ConnorNolan i don't know what is "creative industry", but active digital pencils for laptops are extremely popular with students and academics. These days every new Chromebook supports USI active pens. Apple is moronic in its shortsightedness.
I use my touch screen dell 2 in 1 very often for reading books watching video, I use it in pc mode too as it is faster than moving your mouse or trackpad and clicking on stuff!! 😶
I have touch screen on my HP Envy Laptop, sometimes I use the mouse and keyboard and sometimes I will swipe the screen up or down and when I do find it smudges my screen, my sometimes use my fingers to scroll up and down. I can see the discomfort on the MacBooks.
I would love to have it on the I-Macs, and have the stand articulate it so that it slants at an angle, like the like the Microsoft Studio, and use the Apple Pencil with graphics programs like Illustrator, Photoshop and Fresco, or any other drawing app like an archeitect app, or Autocad, this would be great. Doesn't mean you have to use the touch screen time, but it would be nice to have the screen at a slant (studio mode) for certain types of graphics apps that professionals may use. Then you can angle it back in upright position for other apps like Office 365, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and if they would just add Publisher and Access to the Mac version of Office 365 that would be great too. Why can't you get a database app for the Mac or I-Pad? It would be great for creating E-Commerce websites or in any office stituation.
