    Today we’re going to explore the history of the classic Macintosh operating system. MacOS is the modern operating system that powers every Macintosh computer, from the Mac mini to the iMac Pro. But the Classic Macintosh operating systems, Mac OS 9 and lower, is what we’ll be focusing on in this video.

    So, we're not going to mention how amazing it is that software pirates LITERALLY REFUSED to share Mac OS 8 because of how much people loved Apple? Damn.

      So many people wanted to financially save Apple in 1997, so the number of upgrade sales of MacOS 8 was monumental. It wasn't anything like Windows 95's uptake rate, but still impressive for the number of Macintosh computer owners back then.

      It was mostly bcs Microsoft was gaining a lot of hate for their increasing monopoly, and they would have gained full monopoly of the entire IT market if Apple lost. Apple was their final competitor at the time.

      Oh yes, “sorry, a system error occurred” which required a reboot. I had a Classic Macintosh at the time and I criticized Mac OS for the required reboot since Windows only closed the offending app vs bringing the entire OS down. The classic Mac forums didn’t take too kindly to this criticism even if valid.

    I remember my brother got a Classic Macintosh OS computer working and it featured a few old preinstalled games. It was fun to use. At school in my classrooms, not the main computer classroom, there was a Classic Macintosh Computer. It was fun to use. I remember OS 8.0 launch very well and there was a push in the warez Usenet newsgroups to buy it. I was always hoping for the Copeland "Hi-Tech" and "Gizmo" themes to be released around 8.5 but they never came. I wasted a lot of my time going GUI hacks with Kaleidoscope and ResEdit.

    When Steve Jobs came back to Apple, the Mac was at System 7.5.5. A frustratingly buggy version made worse with all the third-party extensions required by many programs. (Microsoft was particularly guilty of this with Word and other Office programs)
    Under Steve Jobs, Apple quickly came out with 7.6 which brought stability back but was not widely adopted as it was the first System software in a while to charge (a modest) fee.
    OS 8 was a major update and a big deal with MacWorld (I'm going by memory here) saying that it was so good and solid that Apple will have trouble in the future getting people to upgrade from this.

  • @Acoustic_Theory

    There was a neat shareware utility for Mac OS 8 called Kaleidoscope, which would replace the Platinum theme and colors with any of a number of custom themes, and there was eventually even an editor that would allow the creation of custom themes.

    My favorite classic Mac OS is the System 7 era. It's perhaps because that was the period I began using Macs, but I think it's more because it still retained much of the look and feel of the first couple of versions which established them. To this day, I love its "flat" but only slightly three-dimensional look. Gosh, in this video I spotted many little accessories and commands that I'd forgotten about. Mac OS 8 and 9 while introducing many important new features, were ugly to me.

    This missed a lot of functionality that was unique to the classic Mac OS. For example:
    - file and label colors (yes those eventually came to OSX but in a worse form)
    - folder tabs that could be created by dragging a folder to the edge of the screen
    - native 3D model support via drag and drop and the clipboard
    - a truly spatial Finder
    - exceptional drag and drop support within the OS and 3rd party apps. Need to install an OS from another disk? Drag and drop. Install an extension/driver/font? Drag and drop. Need to save some text or a bookmark for later? Drag it to the desktop.

    • @PassiveDestroyer

      That's how I bricked my LC. I dragged the 'Sound' Control Panel from a System 6 disk to my LC's Hard Disk, and opened it.
      The Finder ver 7.5 did not like that, and subsequently got lost upon reboot.
      I then used System 7.0 install disks to reinstall the entire OS.
      I think I was 11 or 12 when I did that, good times.

    • @elijahcorpus3

      This is interesting, but what does "a truly spatial Finder" mean?

    • @okankyoto
      @okankyoto Рік тому +1

      @@elijahcorpus3 If I had to guess its that classic Mac OS Finder fully embraced that it was a bunch of windows. Modern Mac OS Finder is far more elegant but does have a sort of disconnect around if it wants to be like the classic finder or if it wants to embrace acting more like a web browser with tabs. (Windows Explorer also suffers from this) And it results in kind of a mishmash. However its still far more capable at every level- just inconsistent.

      Sadly, what caused them to drop support of that was the transition from PowerPC to Intel processors. Classic, rather than being emulated, was an actual install of OS 8.6 through 9.22 that ran in an isolated software box that they originally referred to as Blue Box (If I am remembering correctly) Nowadays there are ways to emulate classic era macOS, but they aren't all stable...

I had to lie and told my Dad that I was looking at machine when I accidental knocked a glass of water on it. If I told him I stole it out of the office to play a game in the tree house and let it get rained on I wouldn't be writing this now. It cost $2200.00 in 1992 that's almost $4000.00 today!

    Steve Jobs is awesome ! Yes Steve Jobs is ruthless and hard to get along with if you try to be the boss around him, but i love the Steve Jobs that drove Apple to what it is today. I could never work for Steve Jobs but I can enjoy his products.

    I was stuck with 9.0.4 on my old B&W G3 for 8 years until I was finally able to afford a Mac Mini. I had an ATI TV Tuner card, a SoundBlaster card (only one ever made for Mac), and an old Castlewood ORB 2.2GB Disk Drive. None of these companies provided software updates compatible with any Mac os post 9.0.4. That still pisses me off to this day. However 9.0.4 was solid as hell and it served me very well. There are times I still miss and prefer it.

    • @SWLinPHX
      @SWLinPHX 3 роки тому

      Well think of X as the the second half of the Macintosh history. So each version of 10 is more like the original versions 1-9 rather than a decimal point update.

    Classic Mac. The worst operating systems at any of my elementary, middle, and high schools. The frustration of sitting in front of a computer with a spinning colored wheel with no indication of wtf the computer was doing still raises my blood pressure. They were HORRIBLE.

    • @lorien42

      Classic Mac Systems/MacOS was actually really great if someone didn't muck up the extensions at boot time. Sounds like some more savvy students were trolling everyone else. Of course they were probably on LCs or Performas running At Ease...man I hated At Ease

    • @dmnddog7417

      @@lorien42 Hah! Yes, Extension management could be tricky if you were loading too many. It was fun seeing them load along the bottom of the screen at boot, though. The LC's were terrible. I used to avoid them at my college computer lab, and preferred to use the little compact Macs they had because they actually seemed faster! Then one of the labs upgraded to the first PPC Macs, and that was it, I never went to the other two. LOL
