This goes for everybody from Spartans to Napoleons Old Guard. Since ww2 soldiers have started carrying drastically more weight. Now in with full ruck and with battle rattle the gear is 100 pounds or more depending on weapon system and if you have radios etc etc.
In 1987 to 1998, with 1 Year and 4 Months in the Army National Guard ( Army National Guard) and US Army Reserve ( USAR) , I Myself wore the ALICE ( All purpose, Lightweight, Individual Carrying Equipment) 782 " Deuce " Gear / TA-50 ,and, the Woodland M81 BDU Cammies on Active Federal Military Service ( AFMS) with Both the Marine Corps and Army. At 55 Years Old in 2024 , I Myself STILL own and use ALICE and MOLLE Gear .
I was in the 82nd from 1988 to 1992 and everybody from E-1 to Battalion Commander wore the LBJ the same. We were issued a butt pack and had a packing list for. I was in 1/504 and pretty much was set up like that.
1/504th from 86 to 92. Did not have plastic alice belt latch at 1st (still have that 1st belt and butt pack). Damn sure don't remember this video either but the old grey matter is fuzzy at times now. We did load gear like that and the para cord was the 1st mod to happen. I think my hips are still bruised. Glad my son has better kit than we had. He gets to buy comfy optional boots and covers up with goretex gear rather than useless m65 and half shelter poncho.
I was in the Division from '85 -'87 (2/504) and it was not uncommon to replace all the metal clips on the harness with 550 cord. This is not only more comfortable when wearing a ruck, but also more comfortable when in a parachute harness. Other than division review, we never had bayonets issued to us when going to the field (that may have been different in other battalions), but most 11B's did have knives of some type on their LBE's. I had one LBE for actual use and another for IG or other inspections.
Other than bayonet training in basic I drew a bayonet exactly one time. We had a brigade change of command ceremony in Korea and we marched with fixed bayonets…..
1/501st 89-92. Our SOP was close but everyone was issued a buttpack, and a compass. Bayonet was on the right side unless you were a machine gunner or 11C and carried a side arm on the right side. Flashlight or mini-mag with red lens went on right ammo pouch, and pace cord on right shoulder strap. Some NCOs had a beacon on their shoulder straps, and many of us carried a 3rd or 4th ammo pouch. Oh yeah, everything was tied down including the canteens.
@@noface4176 everything tied to the LCE belt with gutted 550. Bayonets, sidearms, canteens all had an additional length of 550 so they could be used without untying. I thought it was dumb as shit until I bounced off a C130 and woke on the DZ to find my bayonet a couple feet away held on my 550.
we put the compass in a front pocket and ran the lanyard thru the pen hole of the pocket. flashlight went in the ruck(mother Alice) the M17A1 had the drink tube for drinking from canteens and 50 or 100 mph tape was a must have.

The bandage was moved up to the left shoulder suspender, We were not allowed to use the butt pack, but were all issued the large ALICE. Compass did go on right hand side as shown, but you were allowed a flashlight on the right shoulder suspender, secured with either a large black retaining band, or an elastic one. As a commo guy we replaced the bayonet with a TE-33 wire man kit consisting of Lineman's pliers (TL's) a folding knife, and usually a roll of electrical tape (I lost a really good set of TL's over Sicily DZ one night because I did not have a dummy cord on them). However, like Ronald said earlier, everyone wore it the same way. Now, anyone want to tell me what they actually put in their ammunition pouches?
I was 3/325 in Vicenza, 88-90. When I was in recon we all had butt pouches, and usually a third ammo pouch as an admin pouch. I was RTO so I always carried that copper wire reel to make expedient bi directional antennas. Nobody used those clunky 90 degree flashlights by then Thank God. LOL
Stationed at Fr. Bragg, I was in a airborne operation and had that green flashlight mounted on my right shoulder suspender. Upon exit from the C-141 that darn flashlight hit my mouth and somehow busted my lip wide open. Moral of the story, that was the last time I wore that flashlight on any of my LBE shoulder suspenders. Airborne!

So... at least 1984. The BDUs began to be issued in Jan 1984. At which point the butt pack was no longer issues. The med ALICE pack had replaced it at that point
I also read somewhere (don't remember where) that some units, still had lots of butt packs in their inventories, and were never told to stop issuing them.
@Paul Revere its 2020 and some units still have Alice packs on their books because CIF won't take them back now. Ask me how I know. I took a few off their hands.
I don't know about the Army. But, I was issued (late 90's) the Buttpack and Medium ALICE pack. I will say that I didn't see any of the canvas buttpacks at all. We were using all nylon type material. Since I was Marine Infantry we were issued the LBV instead of H or Y harness and mag pouches. We were also issued the CFP-90 pack (we called the vector pack) which was not trustworthy and did fail too often. That is why they still issued the ALICE, because we knew if wasn't going to fail.
As a side note, the FM 21-15 (1977) Shows the buttpack as issued with the 1956 gear with the H type suspender. The Y type were not issued with the buttpack, so that may be part of the use/issue differences.
Alice did have a buttpack that's why adjusting the y suspenders on the front and back as high as you can get them if it has no butpack the back part of the pistol belt will ride higher but while its still adjusted like that throw on a butt pack and you're belt will be even
I have both editions of the manual (or are there more?) and they tend to ignore the M1967 gear, barely mentioning 1-3 pieces as either M1956 or LC1 gear. It was actually the missing link between the 2, some bad ideas like plastic buttons, fixed straps, thin material, Davis buckle etc., but also some superior ideas like the e-tool carrier, experimental plastic clips (that would inspire the Malice clips 40 years later), H-suspenders with the shoulder hooks, the sleeping gear carrier and...the nylon butt-pack!

Tie down chord in infantry parlance is "dummy chord." An entire company/regiment were prevented from leaving the field because some dumb private lost his rifle or NVG. This meant the CO couldn't go home because all of the equipment he signed for wasn't accounted for.
Man this is nice. Would 4 magazine pouches (2 on each side) be appropriate for 1980s kits? Would black Corcoran jump boots also be appropriate for airborne loadouts of this era too?

It’s dumb to wear it on the right side. Interferes with shouldering your rifle. We had to wear them on the left when I was in 3ID, unless you were left handed.
To much Bounce and bounce hurts, I had a Alice clip stick in my side wonder why I was bleeding. Only had canteens and mag pouches on my belt and they were on my sides not front or back

I was in a Marine Infantry unit and we got one compass per vehicle. Not everyone is issued a compass. Our compasses were considered a "sensitive" item.
Hell ya NVGs what NVGs you mean the ones in supply we would test out once a year then lock them in a wooden box in supply! Also most units would make it so that only squad ldr and above could have this type of gear. Although the Buttpack anyone could get out in town that was allowed.

My company were the ones that took out uday and qusay hussein in 2003. Got out, was called back to active duty 16 months later and needs of the army reclassed me to support MOS. Sucked balls after that. Thought about going to the 82nd to be in the real airborne, but Germany was available for reenlistment so I went there instead. LoL

4 pouches did happen but not very common for airborne. The Corcoran jump boots were only used for dress uniforms so not correct for a combat role

That is correct. Jump boots were only used for dress occasions. Regular issue leather boots or jungle boots were the go to field boots at the time
Jump boots aren't for the field but for the dress uniform. The panama tread boots were my boot of choice back when I wore BDU's.

Pretty sure the "Y" harness was never used by the 82nd, the "H" harness supported the load much better and prevented twisting.
