In West Germany in the early-mid 80's, a lot of GI's had either a wool blanket or poncho liner sewn into the rain jacket. They were referred to a Hawk or Graf Jackets. You could either wear them over your BDU's or Field Jacket minus the jacket liner.
Snivel gear is near and dear to my heart. I was in 3rd Cav, 1/508 in Panama and 3/505 in Division. In 3rd Cav it got cold and we wore field jackets- we also were issued the "extreme cold weather" parkas, wool field shirts and pants and the Mickey Mouse boots in our deployment bags, but never wore them. My favorite piece of snivel gear was the "sleeping shirt," it was a nylon/rayon base layer shirt that I wore under my BDUs. I didn't need much of any snivel gear in Panama, but when I got to Division, I sewed my patches on my field jackets and got told 'you'll never wear your field jacket in the 82nd Airborne Division.' I think we had the brown wool sweaters from CIF. In Saudi Arabia we got the wool long underwear (I got brown tops and bottoms and a cream top), and the "Night Desert Parka" and liner. I don't remember having my field jacket liner- just long johns and brown sweater and night desert parka- and being cold AF. I still wear the brown sweater and long underwear from time to time, I also have a field jacket liner that I stuff into my Columbia jacket when it gets really cold.
My most cozy setup was the jacket AND pants liner with a wooly pully over my skivvy shirt and then my utilities over that. The gloves and liners were surprisingly comfortable. I never wore the long underwear unless it was well below freezing.
These videos are great! I was in 1-505 from 89 to 94 and God forbid some NCO caught you in a field jacket. Just like SSG Palladino said “they are for pogues.”
Hi, I really like your videos. If possible, you could take out one of the M65 jacket and the type of glove or mitten that accompanies it with the velcro on the sleeve. THANK YOU.
Laughing my ass off here. I'm interested in what year this was. I joined in 86, went to Batt, and we had some crazy M1950 wool trousers and shirt issued. Of course we never wore the Field Jacket, but loved the ichy M1950 Wool SHirt. Later we got the G-Tex jacket and pants, along with Poly Pro and some winter boots. Wasn't bad. I arrived at Bragg 2P in 92. was totally differnet then. I also never carried the basics with gear. We carried four M16 Mag pouches, M9 Bayonet, even the Saw Gunners.
What I have found this was in 86 I was there in 84 - 87 , 82 ND combat aviation Battalion ( Red Hawks) We keep the Blackhawks at Pope . The hanger beside the Mac terminal was where our offices were. Thanks for your service brother .
When did polypro and Goretex start coming into issue? The reason I'm asking is because I already have a Goretex parka and trouser set, and two sets of the polypro undergarments. I'll likely have problems if I had to look for the older stuff in my size (X-Large).
@@brandonpalladino6973 it's actually navy blue belt with a black painted brass buckle. I mean, I could be wrong. I only served from 1998 until 2006, so they might actually had a black belt.
In the early 2000s we got two types of polypro and had to by liners ourselves because they stopped issuing it. Our wet weather gear was in woodland and our uniforms just started to be ACUs, so we couldn't mix the two. The other stuff was irrelevant, because we couldn't wear it. As a paratrooper it's more important that you look like you're not cold than to actually be warm. Also... hands in your pockets to stay warm? So unprofessional. Hand down the front of your pants to stay warm? This is fine.
I’ve watched all these videos with this guy and always wonder who he is and hope he’s doing good after his service
If I read it correctly, his name tag matches the name of the owner of the channel ;-)

Nice!
M65 Jacket liner. Still maintain one today for use. Came in late 1990s in 3/75.

nicely done! you had me for a while
How does he do it with out laughing? But that was issue when I was in during the 70s.
Oh we can laugh at it now.
LMAO!!!!!
And I thought the gortex jacket made too much noise
do you plan on making any more videos in this style in the future? They are fantastic!
I still use my field jacket liner to this day. The kids today in the Army don't know about it. I'm still nice and warm in it.
im 12 and I love it! im the only kid who prefers 80s and below gear than modern gear,

After watching this video I started carrying one out field.
Life changing! I highly recommend it!

Those parkas would get a funk pretty quick

Those were not used by infantry I'm afraid
@@brandonpalladino6973infantry in other units wore the field jacket quite often. Mostly in like, mech units.

This video is from last year. He just edited it to make it look retro. Looks like this guy reenacts 80s 82nd Airborne.

Those were not issued until the early 90s
The field jacket and liner went up until the mid 2000's, just a fun fact
Best cold wx gear was the NBC smock and pants esp during the Ice storms we would get at Bragg
What type of belt was used with the BDUs and did they wear it in the field?
It is the black waist belt and it would be worn at all times

Crisp packet waterproof jkt! We used to wear them under combat jkt in british army because waterproof was so noisy
even in the 80s, cotton/wool was out. parka...
But we were not allowed to use cold weather gear.
That wet weather parka looks like garbage, glad they went to goretex and ponchos.
I mean, these were issued alongside the gortex I’m pretty sure
good woodland
Damn cold weather gear has gone a long way since this stuff. I couldnt imagine doing an ftx in this stuff

I’d be freezing my ass off in this gear
I did.
What is the official name of the white base layer this guy has on called I’d love to get some
