When I was a teenager in the early eighties I used a homemade PAPR at the auto body shop where I worked. One of the guys there made it himself so that we could spray Imron safely. It was a little manifold that chucked into your air hose, then had a separate regulator on it that went to a separate, thin, lightweight hose to your mask. The manifold clipped to your belt and you then used a short hose from the manifold chucked into your paint gun. You adjusted the regulator on your belt to keep your mask supplied with fresh air while you painted. It didn't cover your eyes or anything, but did prevent me from having respiratory issues. Now that I am pushing sixty I am very interested in using a PAPR when I spray two-part paint.
I've recently decided I want to have a nice respirator for the rare occasions when I paint in my shop, so I found your video. I like what you've done, but I don't want to use a cartridge filter. I'd much rather have a fresh air supply but don't want multiple hoses to deal with when I paint, so I am modifying your first design with the snorkel mask, so that it chucks into the air hose from my compressor instead. I am going with the snorkel mask version because fumes from 2K paint are just as bad if they get into your eyes as they are if you breathe them.
On the plus side, I can also use it when I weld, but I usually don't bother with a respirator when I weld. I just keep my face out of the smoke.

We're near twins. We're using almost all the same items. I was contemplating the battery sewing machine, now I'm set. Simply can't take my home 110v machine camping. Cardboard on the leather seal... should be same size as the leather for 100% pressure. Then the round tube would in essence 'pop' into said (replaceable) cardboard.
Decades ago I quickly made a non-powered respirator. Scuba snorkel mouthpiece where I heat bent the straight tube to partly curve down my back. Also used a nose pinch, (Today they make a small triangle mouth & nose piece). Tape sealed the open end & drilled dozens of little holes. Wrapped around the little holes with thin layer of open cell foam & covered that with a washable cloth, fine particle, washable bag for a shop-vac. No motor & plenty of oxygen since the tube was very short. The whole thing was really lightweight, if memory serves 1.5lbs.?
1 drawback was I could only turn my head 45 degree each way but that's enough for the work in front of me.

While the manufacturers of PAPR systems have R&D costs what they want for them is absurd and beyond the reach of many home shop welders. I am considering the MIRA MB-90 and attaching it directly to my welding helmet.

Brilliant video but had me in stitches ( no pun intended ) I think it's your enthusiasm reminds me of my lad years ago, he put a tee piece on his shortened snorkel then fitted two pipes down under his arm pits, on cold walks put it on too blow his warm breath under is clothes to keep him warm, my partner was in hysterics when he said to her his arm pit were wet. You just need to embroider your logo on front. Absolutely 100% enjoyable. Thanks

If you place the pins 90 degrees to the direction of your stitching, you don't have to remove them. you can stitch across them. you don't have to start and stop.

Not sure if anyone pointed this out yet but I think the reason why the MIRA system didn't run as claimed by MIRA the 12h was due to the HiQuick batteries supplying 1.2v power (1.2x8=9.6v) to a 12v system. I've just completed my own system with this video using HiQuick Batteries but got a 10-battery bank which gives the 12v needed for the fan to operate at peak.

Super interesting, useful & inspiring. Currently I am experimenting with the snorkel mask version as a lot of what I am currently doing is wood work with dust & this seems a good way to keep the dust out of my lungs, & some eye protection as well but it’s a wonderful rabbit hole & I will experiment with welding vapor exclusion later on. Thank you so much for sharing. I am not full time so the commercial versions are not cost effective for me & anyhow I like to experiment with this stuff.

Just a note: I have been using AA rechargeable lipo's that have a USB port and claim 2800 mAh each, that I got off Amazon pretty reasonably.
Lithium batteries don't do nearly as well in these situations as NiMH batteries which are also less expensive. Don't confuse NiMH with nicad batteries which suck. I think even Toyota opted to use NiMH in their cars.
I need to watch this a few times, I suspect it possible to fabricate housing on the CNC for the main parts better suited to the sort of fittings you recommend. Great idea and might be a better, more comfortable solution than my JSP when cutting MDF or grinding/buffing alu. Glad I spotted the short.

I made version 1 and love it. A few cons like it's heavy which you mentioned and I can sometimes overcome the outlet with my breathing if I don't have the fan turned up high (almost full power). Version 2 is a worthwhile improvement and will make it eventually but I'm going to address some of the issues and I'm going to make your new buff mask. The snorkel mask is so hot for summer work so the buff mask will be an awesome upgrade, especially when I go to version 2 - also might try to use 2 fans with 2 filters and a adjustable power switch to fine tune the air for both protection and cooling.
As far as safety it is fair for you to say it works but is untested in a lab. We live in a world we're exposed to everything all of the time it's just a matter of how much. What happens if you spend 2k or 3k on a commercial PAPR and don't have enough money for shop air scrubber? You'd be exposing yourself to particulars anyway unless you leave your mask until the dust settles out (you think). $100, 200 or $400 option plus a decent air scrubber is far better scenario.

Never heard of the Mira, 3M pretty much dominates the U.S. market, but that price and package is definitely alluring even to a hobbyist. I will be considering it! I do wonder if the face mask fitting will attach to 3M or other brand full face masks to allow more comfort options. If so, that will be a winner compared to a Versaflo.

That's actually much better than a full mask if you do lots of working with an oxy-acetylenetorch in really small spaces so you can use goggles instead of cutting with clear glas or using sunglasses under the full mask :D Only problem in this build is where to find a cloth that is fire resistant enough to withstand molen steel and thos pesky sparks from welding above your head for example..

Thank you. Laser fumes I would simply extract to outside without filtration thanless I had a neighbour complain or that the local council disapproved. Sometimes I think disposable filters are far worse for the environment. Cheers J
What an excellent video. Thanks for you ideas and great work. I doubt you are worried much about protection from NBC, but I think you need to take some type of plastic boot to put over your toggle switch (and take your sealant around the boot to seal in the toggle). I don't think the toggle switches are generally sealed to the level needed, so a nasty germ could get in that way.

Good concept but I feel that most people aren’t going to be able to achieve the level of testing or QA necessary for something that if you are going to use one, needs to provide a certified level of protection and that’s what you are paying for (at least in part) when you are buying something like the MIRA unit.
In recent years here in Australia and probably the rest of the world, most industrial sites now require fit testing for ALL respirators for everyone to actually that “X” respirator is the correct fit for each persons face shape and because of this have to offer a variety of respirators and air fed full face options. The testing is very thorough and takes probably 15 - 20 minutes per person and will detect even slight levels of filter bypass.
While your intentions are great I’m not sure that should someone choose DIY you have any certainty of it doing what is required and so realistically if you are going to do it to protect your health then there’s really no way the average person is able to do the verification necessary to prove that it is providing “X” level of protection for specific conditions, hazards and dusts. The flammability of any and all materials used is obviously a big factor, even something as simple as elastic is flammable and there have been instances of burns from elastic in underwear and socks etc.
As you noted, even the gassing off from materials is significant and just from an odour you found one of the hoses unpleasant, and there are a lot materials that off gas even before they are exposed to industrial workplace conditions.
I guess if you are just doing it for yourself at home and can’t justify the $400 maybe but even then what peace of mind are you getting? Personally I’d buy the MIRA unit or a locally available equivalent or use a non powered product that had the testing, design approval etc
Very ingenious!!! I am debating making vs buying a system. Health is too important to be breathing toxic fumes and fine particles. One concern would be using products that aren't made for human respiration. I am not convinced that even the belt worn positive air flow systems are totally safe since you are breathing contaminated air that has been filtered. How long are the life of the filters and how can you measure if the filter is properly working? The belt systems are convenient due to portability. I might build my own turbine powered system such as those made by the Sprayfine company in the USA. They are basically a high powered stage I or II vacuum motors. Filtered fresh air can be drawn from outside the work area. Sprayfine does sell hose and masks for different tasks. I enjoy watching your videos and thanks again for sharing your ideas.
Thank you. The life span is 30 days of general use or until there is breathing resistance, I did consider getting the version that runs off a compressor but that still needs good quality filters from compressor containments and I didn't want to be tethered. All the very best. Cheers J

Some time ago I see your video on the first one you did we had a good talk about it iv still not done mine life keeps getting in the way but with the 3 you have there are a good idea I like both with the full mask and the the hood but my self I would like one that dose both full mask for grinding as it covers the hole face but what if you can change that to the hood so if you was to weld or do light work it's on the same set up so you don't have to use 2 different battery or fan set ups just one with the 2 set ups you have I would be more comfortable with the first fan but with the second battery and voltage meter maybe something to think about and more for me to look in to

Have tested what's the flow? I got Esab sentinel A60 air for work and it's nice that it comes with tester to measure flow 170l/m with low setting. I like it much as it has air connections right where you breath as some others have it coming from top of the safety gear.

@@joshuadelisle I think it was good price about 500 euros, actually very cheap offer as I've seen it sold for about 800euros. Yeah, steep price, but got it for work by my employer. I think welding helmet just by itself cost like 250 here.
It seems it would be best to use a cpap blower and cpap hose surely?

I used 3m vapor cartridges during the fires and I was better off without the mask As I was getting fatigued, it was a manual mask but are those filters better?
Love the mask idea!! I tried to make a hood for my face shield and failed horribly.

Hey Joshua. I love this design.... a portable battery powered air filter is something I think literally any householder would use even if they didn't have a workshop. I was treating some black mould the other day and I am still suffering from the chlorinating bleach today. I actually have most of these parts lying around already so I'm feeling inspired to give it go. May I be nosey and ask if you are related to William Godfray DeLisle, inventor of the DeLisle Carbine? I can find little on the internet about Godfray DeLisle (possibly because he was MOD?) but it seems that he was a true designer and engineer with a flair for the original. He basically bodged the carbine out of bits of other pistols and rifles in his spare time, then developing a ported barrel design that was effectively silent when used with subsonic APC rounds. So you may not be a descendent but nevertheless treading the same paths perhaps! :)

I just use a speedglas 9100fx respirator. Parts at any local welding shop. Simple as that.
M12 battery in a bigger capacity like a 6amp instead of the 2amp ones your probably are using will probably make your version 2 last longer , while not adding much weight.

Perhaps you can consider a ready-made FR Buff like the Black Stallion Flame-Resistant Cotton Knit Neck Gaiter (AH1565-GY) or similar.

Great design on this one...I liked you 1st version and commented on it in which you had built approx. 2 yrs. ago...You sent me to this one...Much lower profile design then the first...I have a question though for you as to why you went with a toggle switch and did not entertain the idea of adding a rheostat in line this time around...I understand the Gauntlets theory and sure it makes sense but did you find that you were running on max all the time and did not require the lower volume of air being sent to mask?
Also on this version there were the intakes you had printed into the 1st design of version 2,
which attached to the mask where the hoses hooked to and stated that most people did not have a printer...can you supply those printed formats so if those of us have a printer they could print?
Hi. Thank you so much. The new design uses a brushless fan which has an in built esc so it cannot be regulated unfortunately, I did try but found the normal power to be just enough and quiet so just a simple switch was needed. The 3D prints aren't necessary especially if using CPAP hoses the listed adapters work fine. All the very best. Cheers J
Fantastic! Been waiting for the buff design for a few weeks now. I've added the material to the basket from the links for the buff but it says 4-5mm carbon fibre welding blanket?? Is that correct? I thought in the video it was plain old cotton...

Amazingly it looks like the power cap has been around for a decade and it seems like no one has heard of it except for a few lonely wood turners. Seems to have gotten very poor marketing. If they could get the price down to $250 it could be a massive winner. I would love to see your DIY take on it.
I hope this topic is successful enough for you to pursue more videos on it as it’s really important. These things need to be more accessible to everyone.
I know you’re a metal guy, but perhaps you could get more views by doing a DIY PAPR video involving fiber glass work. Check out Sailing Uma, they are in the middle of renovating their fiberglass sail boat. Do a colab with them and get them on the diy PAPR train!

The problem with a powercap is it can't be used under a welding hood and it's a significant amount of weight on the head which over time can cause neck problems I believe.
oh, here is another question I hadn't thought of, on the m18 adapter, does it drain all cells or only certain ones?

Why not just get a broken air welding helmet of ebay or something, Ive got at least three somewhere and use the filter units only, they take PAPR type filters and one takes round Esab filters, all needed is just way to hookup to your Buff. With this approach and buyin random bits and bobs you’ll end up paying same price as you would for a normal belt type air filtering unit (see Esab warrior tecman welding air helmets) sometime soon folks sell used ones for peanuts and you only want an air unit with charger.

I’d be concerned about the open bottom causing a vacuum due to the Venturi effect. If the flow of air is into the mask with a gap behind it, with a higher flow of air I wonder if you’ll be pulling in contaminated air with the clean air. Does that make sense? I have a PAPR mask but hate the air on my face and the weight of it. I’ll make one of these I think but I think I’ll use the elastic with a toggle to close the bottom. Thanks for the content mate
I under stand but because it is tight fiited at the top there is too much back pressure for the venturi effect to happen and istead you get a cold chest as the air flows out downward. cheers J

Right, that's the filters ye? but what about that hood / buff you made, I was wondering if the wood dust would find its way in there. I'm working on a tablesaw a lot, and the dust is shooting at me straight into my face. With certain wood species it's ridiculous how much actually!
@@Nettle314 yes. Because it's under positive pressure dust is constantly being blown out and away from any gaps. I've actually upgraded it again to a cheap face shield that has a snug fit because I'm doing casting soon and needed a full face visor. Cheers J

@@Nettle314 yes that's why I added the plastic layer otherwise too much air escapes and does work.
I just put together your version 1, except I use draw on a 3m 6800 full face and don't weld so it is mainly dust and partulate protection so I use the draw on the pump instead of the blow. it was so much more simple. but I have a question, do you wish you have speed control on version 2??? Also, version 2 seems way more expensive to me.

Absolutely fantastic, will definitely be building your mark II version ... I'll be using it for woodturning so may do it with a full face mask (for protection against flying lumps of wood) ... I love the MIRA battery system, using standard AA batteries is fantastic ... thank you so much for this brilliant and cheap system 👍
The manufacturers of PAPR systems are just rip-off merchants, I loathe them and other manufacturers like them ... yes they need to make a profit, but the amount they are charging is just obscene ... another example of a ripoff, the Robert Sorby Pro Edge sharpening system, a glorified bench/belt grinder at a stupid price!!

@@joshuadelisle Now experimenting with 5150, 7530 and 12030 fans ... the 7530 fans are probably more than enough, especially if I chuck in two of them, allowing the user to switch one or both on for extra airflow, with a supposed 339 l/m for one ... the 12030 (like you used, but cheaper), says 990 l/m, so it'd probably make sense to fit it with a potentiometer to allow the speed to be controlled. The Mira, Trend and JSP systems output 90 l/m, 220 l/m and 240 l/m respectively, so one 7530 is probably more than enough.
I've bought some Gentex PureFlo P3R filters ... got 10 pairs for £11 delivered, a one off bargain I think ... looks like they are normally around £4-£5 a pair ... will fit two of them instead of the big round filter you used.
I'll probably go with your neck tube idea, as not only should it work with any helmet and visor/goggles combination, but it could also be used on it's own where you don't really need eye/face protection, for example sanding wood.
I've been thinking of making one of these things for years, but your two videos have spurred me into action ... thanks again 👍

How long does a filter cartridge last? You didn't cover that.
Depends on working environment
It very much depends on what environment you're working in. In general it's 30 days of use, different filters have different use lengths, I have managed to blow out my old filters with a compressor so I haven't actually brought any more for a long time, that's not advisable though. Cheers J

If you go to alley express you can buy a system for ventilation for about 125.00 USD it comes with a battery and charger system all in the unit and has a screw on section and comes with a filter. For the money not worth building one! Lasts about seven hours on one charge. I bought two units so if I go longer than seven hours I can switch the unit out.

I wonder if you are going to the trouble of getting a CPAP hose weather or not it might be worth looking at one of their face masks?
If anyone does this, be advised you need to know what size face you have (no I'm not joking but as I use a CPAP I am aware of how bad a badly fitting mask affects you)
