Paint Respirators - a quick overview of paint masks and respirators

  • This is a quick overview of why and how you use a paint respirator. Paint respirators keep you safe around paints. Enamel paints are not the only paint types that are dangerous to be around. All paints have associated paint dust or particulates. Even non toxic paints can be dangerous due to then containing chemicals that may be no toxic to eat but they do not need to be in your lungs. Professional painters have a high rate of lung and health problems due to the paint vapors they were inhaling for years when they were younger.
A paint respirator is an essential tool all project artists should have close at hand to remain safe. Even spray paint can be very dangerous if it is inhaled over a long period of time. Using a paint respirator helps keep you safe from the short term and long term negative effects that inhaling paint can cause.
The paint respirator I use can be found here:

im here as someone you use to paint during summers in high school and university. Never wore any protection. Now I have allergic asthma that is manageable but I'm sure the fumes didn't help. Over this last weekend I used a spray paint on a vice I was restoring. I barely used much as it was for detailing work, but it was a high gloss gold color. 4 hours later after a shower my heart felt like it was going to blast through my chest. This went on periodically all night and a few times the next day. Barley slept as I thought I may be leaving early. Did some research and figured out it was the type of enamel paint I was using, and it was an old can. Found out some guy died of cardiac arrest from using a similar product. I now will never be without a respirator, hell even if I'm using latex outside with a brush on a windy day, I may still use a respirator. Please especially to any younger guys, or gals use one. When I was younger I thought it was too much of a hassle, and I was tough. Well I may of been tough, but my lungs apparently weren't especially after years of abuse, its worth the hassle to put one on, I am happy to still be here, as jacked up as the world is I am surrounded by people I love, and need me, and I'm sure you are too.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have been struggling SO badly with my allergy asthma and thought something else was wrong with me as I’ve never had any issues, but you described EVERYTHING I’ve been feeling. Like I could be on my way out and my chest just hurting after doing one area. Will be getting one and thank you you so much for your help

Not that I feel it would be appropriate for everyone but I have gone exclusively to the use of a respirator for all my shop applications. Dust masks always left me with saw dust around and in my nose. Plus a respirator does not fog up my safety glasses the way a dust mask would. Good info and video.

Very informative. Thank you. However, just as you need a respirator mask, you also need well fitted eye protection so that none of the paint particles or fumes reach the mucous membranes around your eyeballs.

origami shawn Generally you're ok with water based paints but any type of enamels and you should get a respirator. Make sure to have plenty of ventilation as well. One way to check is after a long paint project look in your nose. If you see any color in there, you should be wearing a respirator next time.

    • @neolithic3

The filters on these mask have a very short life after you open the package. A lot of false information here.

Why didn't you provide the correct information or a link to it? Here it is: The shortest filter use time is after 40 hours of use or 30 days, whichever comes first, and that is only IF you are working with oil aerosols. Otherwise 6 months, which isn't very short at all, to me. Here is the link (scroll down to page 4): multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/565214O/3m-cartridge-filter-guide-and-brochure.pdf Pro tip: If you store your mask in a Ziploc bag emptied of air, you can get alot longer than 6 months of use out of the filters.
