Either way at the present time you can buy from China CPAP fans quite cheaply used in machines for sleep apnoea, they are brushless and perfectly designed for this purpose. All the best.
@@joshuadelisle Thanks for your reply. I have learnt from your idea about the scuba mask. Please disregard my comment about carbon particles, if it is an issue it's probably just microparticles per billion. I become very interested in this sort of product. I have extreme dust allergies, and the things that triggers me are the little quite large fibre particles The come off clothing. I'm trying to design a really lightweight unobtrusive apparatus that I could wear longer term. I do actually have a top of the range powered respirator a sundstrom SR 700. It's flawless But it's bit of a beast and works at 14.8 volts. I use it every time I'm hoovering or dusting without fail. I want something that's more discreet that I can wear with other people. Sorry for life story. Recently I saw a lady in a wheelchair with a powered respirator with just the large end of the air tube pointing at her face under the chin. She was immune suppressed and thought it would help her stop catching covid. Unfortunately my test with a laser particle counter show that outside air gets sucked into a jet fresh air unless you're very close.
@@Jamesnebula I may put the filter after the pump instead of before. That way any dirty pump would work. Just needs to be sealed both sides then maybe in its own chamber. Cheers J
@@joshuadelisle that wouldn't be a good idea, because pulling air through a filter is far more efficient than blowing air at a filter. When sucking air through a filter air is moving evenly and slowly through the resistant material., Where as blowing tends to make the air bounce off. I made an air filter for my car based on blowing through a panel rather than sucking air. I used a large 12v boaring bilge blower and a variable speed controller. It did work but I lost a lot of efficiency.
Fantastic. Going to try myself. I've got a extract set up and usually use disposable carbon fiber mask which work out expensive. Thanks for the video. Hello sir! This build is AMAZING!! What is the ETA on V2? I'm a frequent flyer and would love to have this sooner rather than later! (Minus the welding portion, as they frown on welding on airplanes...)
Great video. I've just done something similar for my spray booth, only I'm tethered. I've piped a line to the outside where there's no contamination, and made a snorkel type head set to breath through. Being tethered isn't the the best but I don't have to move very far when I'm spraying.
Hey Joshua, I've just dug out one of these inflator pumps from my loft. Testing it, it seems to draw air from more than just the hole marked exhale. It takes in air from all the holes. It must be taking in dirty air when you use it?? If you want to test yours, turn it on and hold a flame to the holes to see if it moves.
@@dimmaz88 I've already begun building version 2 that is uses different style fans. Genuine idea, I like it a lot mate. It is horrible joke, just for sake of earning some money, those companies still charge way too much for necessary health safety equipment. Thanks, I will copy it. I use two 14 inch fans at full speed to evacute air from my small garage, but I still develop cough after welding. It is simply not enough.
Hi Joshua thank you so much for putting the time and effort to make a video I will be making one any idea when you will be doing V2 is coming out many thanks Mark
Thought I'd share that I've made another mod to the design. I found it awkward trying to shrink the bottle around the hose and facemask. So, I cut about the first two inches off the end off of the snorkel provided, and attached the hose to it. Now, it will just snap onto the mask and can be easily removed. This also adds a little more length to the hose, which I find helpful.
I love this but I wish you’d gone into a bit more detail about connecting the adapter leads to the potentiometer. I’m certain I can figure it out, but it would’ve been nice to be able to watch you do it.
If I could press the subscribe button again, I would. Another project that's been wondering in my mind. Though I was looking for something thinner. But such fans are way more pricey then what you came up with. Well done again ...
Brilliant effort. Great to see another use of a Milwaukee battery. Tool batteries are not just for tools but can be used on other projects if you put your mind to it.
Quite nicely assembled thing. All about the filter and as if it keep pressure in the mask positive of outside AND doesn't have "venturi" effect in any air connections I can't see it differing from any of the indeed _really_ expensive 3M stuff. I've been thinking to get powered respirator, but.....Man those prices are steep.

Hi John. I believe there are adaptors available but not by DeWalt themselves. I would have a look on Amazon, bangood or eBay to see. All the very best. Cheers J
Fantastic video, practical and thoroughly thought through. I did just wonder whether the filter should be between the motor and the wearer, in case the air pump is producing any particulates or volatiles you don’t want to inhale?
@@joshuadelisle I think this is a very valid concern The motor is vented and the air drawn through the motor is likely exhausted into the blower's output. As the carbon brushes in the motor wear down it will produce a very fine particulate will be blown into the mask, it's probably less harmful than the welding fumes but also probably worth avoiding.
@@alex-9533 hi Alex. I've addressed the potential issue in version 2 coming soon however I believe the motor housing on this model exhaust actually flows out rather than inward as it's also under positive pressure and doesn't have a cooling fan if you get my meaning. Cheers J

Also going make the BBQ forge but I can't weld very well so am trying a heart sink Copper pipe experiment with a little radiator just for fun so thanks for the inspiration (open system) 🤘
Thank you. All the very best. Cheers J
Sounds like it works well. Cheers J
The one I used doesn't seem to have a problem when I did a smoke test and used it in very volatile situations with great results. I'm sure you can get round sealing the gaps with silicone if you find it a problem with your model. All the very best. Cheers J
Perhaps a small fan expelling condensation on top running by pipe to the rear with a cap end filter?
Thank you for sharing. I clicked on your Amazon links and ordered all of the parts.
Thank you so much. All the very best. Any questions please feel free to get in touch. Cheers J
Thank you so much. Cheers J
Hi Joshua
thank you so much for putting the time and effort to make a video
I will be making one any idea when you will be doing V2 is coming out
many thanks
Mark
Soon in the new year, I need it now as this one is wearing out now and hard to see through. works though. cheers J
I ordered and assembled one. I used a CPAP hose instead of Dyson, but otherwise the same. Thank YOU!!
Well done. Cheers J
Heh.
It's like a CPAP for the active sleeper.
I do enjoy the fresh thinking! outstanding work.
Thank you so much. Hopefully lots more to come. Cheers J
Another class video. I'm a knife maker in a small shed. This makes sense.
Thank you I hope you'll find it it useful. Cheers J
Nice one. Good idea. Cheers J
More proof that people are amazing. Thank you so much !
Thank you. I've got a version 2 coming soon. Cheers J
Excellent work, great design, clear explanation! Thank you!
Thank you. Cheers J
Great stuff. Filtration is where it is at.
Thank you. Cheers J
Very good video cool idea for Powered Air Purifying Respirator
Thank you. Cheers J
I love this but I wish you’d gone into a bit more detail about connecting the adapter leads to the potentiometer. I’m certain I can figure it out, but it would’ve been nice to be able to watch you do it.
Thanks man. I'll build may own today.
Well done. cheers J
If I could press the subscribe button again, I would. Another project that's been wondering in my mind. Though I was looking for something thinner. But such fans are way more pricey then what you came up with.
Well done again ...
Thank you so much. cheers J
Brother all I can say is AWESOME!!! keep it up my man
Thank you. I've got version 2 coming soon. Cheers J
Brilliant effort.
Great to see another use of a Milwaukee battery. Tool batteries are not just for tools but can be used on other projects if you put your mind to it.
Sure can and great amount of power and ease of charging. Cheers J
Unbelievable mate. Absolutely class, such great work. This looks like one ill be doing not really for welding but for knife grinding. Cheers bud 👍
I am absolutely making this
Nice job.realy Nice job .Simple and works.very good.👏
Thank you. I'm working on a version 2 coming soon. cheers J
I've been wanting to make a powered pack for my 3M mask for a long time but didn't really know where to start so this video is awesome!! Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍
It's a shame 3M don't sell affordable conversion kits. This works well though and is cost effective in comparison with others. Cheers J
This is nothing short of brilliant! 👍
Went over and beyond
Subscribed immediately 👍🏼👍🏼
Especially with the list
Thank you. All the very best. Cheers J
This is codswallopping awesome! Love your polished well-researched DIY!!!!!Kia Ora form Aotearoa, New Zealand! :)
Thank you. Cheers J
You just earned yourself another subscriber. Awesome job! Waiting on V2 and then I'll use your links to buy everything.
Version 2 is in use and currently being modified for optimum performance. Will post soon. Cheers J
Thank you very much, nice job. Will this capture VOCs and ozone generated from aluminum welding?
If the filters are rated for voc then it will. I don't think ozone is harmful though. Cheers J
Josh I love the idea, it’s bloody amazing, I reckon with your skill buddy you could knock a case up in the 3d printer, awesome use though mate
Thank you. Yes I've been working on a version 2 on and off. Mainly a beard friendly version. Coming at some point soon. Cheers J
@@joshuadelisle awesome mate looking forward to seeing it, I’ve dabbled with welding a few years ago to build a couple of things, but recently left the ambulance service after 14 years and I was looking at doing a night class for welding and if I enjoy it try to make a career out of it, If I don’t just use it to build stuff, always wanted a smoker and a pizza oven so wouldn’t mind making them, but welding jobs here in Wales you need to be coded for? Whatever that means , keep up the good work mate, also I’ve had a look on your channel and couldn’t see one, but hoping you would do one in the future is build a cnc machine from scratch so you can’t make it as big as you want it type thing and he parts you need.
@@OutdoorOpsWales hi. Thank you. I converted a CNC laser engraver to a plasma machine in one of my video, I'm going to do a follow up re building to a larger size. To coded means you did a weld test to high standard that has been checked by lab that registers the certificate, I got coded after a lesson which costs £250 at the time and lasts 2 years. Most companies will accept you on experience and a weld test on interview and will pay for you to get coded once enrolled. Cheers J
@@joshuadelisle oh right ok I’ll have to have a look at the coding stuff then, yes I’ve seen that CNC video would be nice to see how to build one from scratch mate, well keep up the good work and I’ll look forward to seeing these up coming videos, speak soon buddy
Nice job sir,. And a very good presentation,. Keep it up ☺️
Thank you so much.
Your resourcefulness is akin to Yankee ingenuity! sorry just a bit of humor. Seriously, thank you very much for the great and inexpensive solution to a health and comfort issue and for the links to your components.
Thank you so much for watching. Cheers J
I might piece one of these together if I can find cheap activated charcoal filter elements that will work for base coat/ clear coat.
One thing for sure is I’ll be using your bottle shrinking trick.
Thanks for posting, great build! I agree that the top name masks have way too much mark up, There is nothing too fancy about those PAPR helmets. I will build myself one of these
Thank you. I've got version 2 coming soon. It's even cheaper and works better. Cheers J
@@joshuadelisle hey is v2 coming out soon? I’m saving my money to build the V2 instead. I’m getting a bit tired of breathing in questionable fumes 😂😂🤟
@@josuemartinez7650 hi. I'm just busy with s few commissioned projects and I'll get straight on it soon after. Maybe about month away. Cheers J
@@joshuadelisle not to be an impatient asshole but is there anyway I can get an updated parts list for the build please ? 🥺🙏
@@josuemartinez7650 I'll see what I can do. I'm not sure what the visor is called I'll have to look it up but it's only £5 and is for grinding. I use a M12 battery and 2 12v high volume computer fans and 2 P3 Stealth replacement filters. A switch too. Cheers J
I love the video more from the humour point of view than practical, by the way, The Speedglas picture is not. a G5-01. but a 3M Speedglas 9100XX FX Adflo Air Fed Welding Helmet a much older version than the NEW G5-01.
I subscribed in 5 seconds Joshua. You wouldn't believe this, but I've bought a scuba mask and a 3A motor, and looking to put together. Found this! Loved the footage patrolling the shops! I was thinking of that as a screw you covid measure :D
All the very best James. Cheers J
I saw your stag sculpture in the fire and iron gallery - amazing. can't wait!
Thank you very much. That's a video I've already done before a few years ago. This next stag is a big one but welded and patterns will be available for everyone to do the build. Cheers J
When is V2 coming out? I’m looking at doing this but would hate to have the new one drop right after I purchase all the stuff.
When I've finished modifying and done a video. I would say it's different not necessarily better than this one. Cheers J
What a Fantastic Video. I think ill be doing something similar for wood turning. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching. Cheers J
i'd probably combine it with the wolfsnout motorcycle dust mask. it's a semi-rigid mask that makes you look like you have a wolf snout. i don't have it yet but it looks pretty comfortable
Sounds good. Did you see my version 2 in my recent videos? Cheers J
Turnah made a similar thing.
But your model is portable and also has actual filtration so you've got that on him.
This is amazing. I have asthma and I still weld and do things I shouldn’t do… But then I pay the price. Have you heard anyone who used DeWalt instead of Milwaukee for the adapter? All of my cordless tools are Dewalt. Would like to avoid purchasing another battery and charging kit. Thank you so much for your videos
Hi John. I believe there are adaptors available but not by DeWalt themselves. I would have a look on Amazon, bangood or eBay to see. All the very best. Cheers J
Awesome job my friend and Nuff Respect from Jamaica :-)
Thank you. Mark 2 coming soon. Cheers J
I realize it’s an old video, but going to make this. I was wondering if you thought about a way to make the air cold?
Hi Its pretty cold as it is but i considdered an extra chamber to house an iced water bttle that the air would circulate around. cheers J
Genius. Absolute genius.
Thank you Matt. Cheers J
Fantastic video, practical and thoroughly thought through. I did just wonder whether the filter should be between the motor and the wearer, in case the air pump is producing any particulates or volatiles you don’t want to inhale?
Thank you. I don't think it's a problem but I think the pump definitely needs a filter also otherwise dust will clog the rotor. Cheers J
@@joshuadelisle
I think this is a very valid concern
The motor is vented and the air drawn through the motor is likely exhausted into the blower's output.
Cheers J
Very well explained. I made a similar device prior, for dust and such. New to wielding. Thanks
Thank you. Cheers J
Any relation to the chap Delisle who developed the silenced carbine in WWII?
No sorry...
Hi Joshua, I am building one of your PAPR and am not finding the information on the Dyson hose used in the build. I bought one off Amazon but it was the wrong version. Can you let me know which one(s) are suitable for the build. Thanks great idea can't wait to finish it up!
Hi. I no longer recommend the PVC because the plastic off gasses are harmful. Instead I use a CPAP hose which is used for breathing machines. Cheers J
Thank you for the information Sir!!!
WOW good old ebay 38 minutes after amazon tells me I no longer exist, purchased the lot, thanks Joshua, once it all arrives i'll send a picy
Well done. Cheers J
Glad your back, great project something we all need
Thank you. Lots more to come. Cheers J
Amazing, this is real UA-cam
Love this DIY PAPR system!! I saw this video and ordered the part’s immediately! This works great for my welding sanding needs, but I find when painting I can still smell the paint fumes and have to quit immediately. Is this because of the filter canister (P-A-2) not being rated for common spray paint?
Wondering whether to risk using this setup for spraying 2k at home in the shed and putting the motor/filter in the living room with a longer hose
Could work. Cheers J
I love it. 🎉thanks.
You are the legend ,man
You're very kind. Cheers J
Genuinely enjoyed, liked AND subscribed! Thanks for sharing this you just saved me a ton of aussie quid!
Wow I'm going to make one nice one
Thank you. I've got version 2 coming soon. Cheers J
this is awsome. i have to wear glasses helmet earmuffs and respirator at my work and its hot and uncomfortable, i always take my mask of all the time cause i want to breath and wipe the sweat and condensation off and that defeats the point.
ive been trying to make a design that incorporates my safety helmet and flip down face shield.
@Joshua
Battery low voltage protection?
I believe that Milwaukee's batterys do NOT have voltage cutout.
The low voltage cutout is in their tools.
If i am corect then how did you solved this isue?
Thank you!
All the parts are listed and described in the video. There is nothing else. Not sure why it is an issue?
