The fact that Will took the time to build a full op amp circuit for a temperature detecting proximity sensor that triggers a flamethrower instead of just using an ultrasonic sensor or LIDAR completely stunlocked me. Never change, Big Willy
Ultrasonic or LIDAR would trigger on any moving object. Temperature detecting sensors will trigger on warm bodies. Also, it gives it a free dead band. If the flamethrower comes on and is sensed by the heat detector, that will just keep the heat detector on for a period of time (to thoroughly burn your victim) until the running average is saturated at the burning temperature, then it'll stay off for a fixed period until your running average has had time to return to ambient.

It definitely has higher design complexity, and would be difficult to tune the detection correctly to prevent false positives, which is why we see it triggering in the video on nothing. IMO, motion detection is a better approximation for detecting people, as it would be far more trivial to code and design around. Also, blasting flames at anything that moves is just funny

i’d like to take this opportunity to voice my personal “scammed by a toy commercial” story. it was this weird robotic dog, i think maybe littlest pet shop brand(it had a big head like those dolls). in the commercial it was advertised as a pool toy that could swim and do a doggy paddle, when i got it and tried it out the giant head made it flip over everytime. idk how they got footage for the commercial, it was convincing

This video was incredibly good, MOSTLY because I literally started crying a little when you referred to Open Sauce as the "world's greatest science fair," because you're right. Seriously. Just the idea that in the future, people who are no longer in school AND people who are, makers, people who just like making cool sh*t with engineering and electronics, could just sign up and show off the awesome stuff they made potentially for free, and it's merit-based, the idea that this could spread and open the doors for other similar events worldwide, you know.. it just really chokes me up. This is the start of a truly, incredibly beautiful thing, all jokes aside, although I love the jokes too but... thank you, William. What you made is really, really freaking cool. I love you (to Will and anyone reading this 😘)
