Ford F150 Grinding - IWE check valve
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2024
- OK, so this started happening on my 2017 Raptor and i first though it was an exhaust leak or i damaged my vapor canister again. it sounded like gravel or wind noise or gears grinding. it's hard to believe it was all due to a cheap plastic parts.
So here is a Quick video on how to fix the IWE check valve grinding noise on the Ford F150.
Ford F-150's use a vacuum to keep the IWE front hubs disengaged in 2wd. Overtime the check valve that holds that vacuum can leak and you can hear the from hubs grinding as they half engage.
Side note, I'm not going to get into all the technical details as there are plenty of videos out there on it. If you want technical details I highly recommend you check out OZ mechanics UA-cam video Linked below. He has a great video with full details on how the hubs work on a 2005 truck. The system basically works the same on all modern F150's
• DIY How to test 4WD va...
Here are the part numbers. You an get just the check valve, but it costs about the same as the whole tube assembly.
Ford Part #FL3Z-3A788-B

Valve is 7A788 on the Digram
Check Valve Only:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Keep in mind that the Valve is your first check. the problem could also be on the Solenoid and in worst case scenario, the lines and hubs could be damaged. Left alone long enough and you can damage your hubs.

Dude! This is it! Been in and out of Ford service for 6 months thinking it was coming from transmission. Even they couldn’t figure it out. Thanks for posting this video brother!
I had the same experience and why we posted it up once we got some good sound clips of it. Glad we could help
That sound drove me crazy for over a year in my 2018. I took it to the dealership multiple times without a fix. Thank you!
Glad we could help.
Most dealers won’t start at the check valve. Service centers are a profit center for them. They would much rather do the bigger job than check the basics.
Bro, first video I’ve watched of yours and I fed like your style. Short and to the point. My language.
Adam Kendrick thanks man 🙏🙏
Man really thank you for this video I spend around 1700 on different parts trying to find this noise I really appreciate it. That you take the time to download it.
Glad I was able to help.
Great catch man. Drove me nuts trying to figure it out. Just replaced the valve and tube assembly , and that was it.
Great to hear man. Really glad the video was able to help you out.
Thank you so much! I'm a single mom with 5 kids and truck problems stress me out. Good Samaritan UA-camrs just sharing knowledge are a life saver. Mine was actually my solenoid but I wouldn't have gotten there without this video. I feel like I should bake you some cookies or something 😂. Thank you so much for sharing.
Nanette Arnell your welcome. That’s the main purpose of this channel. Help others with problems we face with out truck and our mistakes out on the trails. Reading these types of messages makes me so happy.
I want to thank you for this video. You saved our family vacation while towing the travel trailer. The noise got worse and worse. Replaced the check valve and problem solved. Thank you.
That is great to hear. It’s why we put our videos out there
Bro, you rock! That fixed it. Do vids on transmission and differential fluid changes.
Your welcome.
We do have differential and transfer case videos up. But not transmission yet.
Dude same issue on my '15 f150 with 66k. What a great world we live in with so much info. Thank you!
akrolite your welcome. Glad the video could help out
Great simple explanation for those of us that are auto ignorant. Thank you
Thank you so much, fixed my issue right before a family vacation that I needed the truck for.
Blitzkrieg FPV awesome man. Glad the video could help
Driving my 2018 f150 3.5 ecobost the other day when an old Lincoln Town Car pulled up next to me. As we were driving I said to myself "boy that car sounds like S#@&". Well the Town Car took a turn and I could still hear the sound. I first thought it was blown turbos, talk about money. I got to work and did some research, found this video, and within 24 hours problem fixed. I took my check valve out and did blow in it in both directions and noticed it did not completely seal, so I had high hopes that was the issue. With my issue I did notice you can throttle down and control the grinding sound. My 20 mile commute it lasted a total of maybe a minute added up. With that said, once you are moving put it in 4 Wheel High and it should stop the issue until you can replace the check valve. Thanks for the video post.
4wd clearing it is a clear sign it’s an IWE leak somewhere. Next step is to figure out from where. 99% of the time it’s the check valve. But it can also be the solenoid, lines, or the IWE bellow itself in the hubs.
Thanks for the video it was a big relief to know it was a cheap and easy job, that noise sounded very expensive. I just got back from test drive and the sound is gone. I replaced the both the valve and solenoid in my business casual shirt without getting it dirty. No tools and less than 5 mins, you couldn't ask for an easier repair job.
That’s is great to hear. Really glad the video was able to help you out. Left unchecked I can turn into a big problem.
I have a F150 3.5 2015. Dealership quoted $1,954.00 to fix this noise by replacing 8 parts and pieces. After watching your video I went and picked up my truck from the dealership, bought the valve for $44 bucks and installed it using my hands only (no tools needed) in less than 3 minutes. Problem solved! Thank you so much!
That is great to hear! Glad the video helped.
This problem only occurred to my 2015 F150 when the temperature was less than 32 degrees F. My mechanic was not able to reproduce the last time the truck was in the shop. I saw this video and decided to replace the check valve and solenoid valve. IT FIXED THE PROBLEM!!! Thanks for posting this video as it saved me some bucks and fixed the truck.
Glad we could help
Bought and changed it out today after watching your video. Was having the same issue. Thanks!
Did this solve your problem?
Follow up on previous comment, I got this part for 26$ at my local ford dealership they carried it in stock. Took me longer to open my garage door than it was to replace the part, I had it installed in a few minutes but kinda got nerves when I heard the air release outta the vacuum system when I took it off. Got the new one on, engaged my 4x4 back to 2x4 a few times to make sure everything was engaging and working correctly. Everything works and since then if put on about 1200 miles just running here and there allot of stop and goes and it’s never grind or tried to engage since. Awesome video and thank you. Saved me a shit ton of money going to a shop, never would have known this. You rock 🍻. Thanks again 💯🤙🏼
That’s great to hear man. Glad we could help
Just purchased 2018 f 150 super crew two weeks ago. Only has 20,000 on it and still under warenty. Started making this noise, took to Ford and they replaced the check valve. Thanks for your video, I will be on the look out now in the future.
Bro, you have no idea how many stupid sounds I've made to my friends trying to figure out what issue it could be. Glad I found your video. I could never replicate the sound for a friend, but the second my wife jumps in, it would come back.
🤣🤣🤣 I was in the same boat and why I made the video
I almost payed my 100 deduct to have the dealership to try to diagnose and fix my truck. I’m glad I came across this vid .
T Dawg that’s awesome man. Glad we were able to help.
The brake light started coming on in my 2017 Raptor. Then the brakes felt slightly touchy and grabby. And finally the dreaded grinding clacking sounds when under slight load. Changed the check valve and noise is gone. Thanks for your video!
Nice!! Glad to see the video was able to help
Thanks man.. I was pissed because I just bought a 2017 F150 3.5L and had it for three days. Heard this noise on the way home from work this morning.. Thanks again brother. I can sleep better now.
Your welcome. Just make sure it’s tight when you close it and call them up if you have problems. They have good customer service
Thank you for the video. I was worried my transmission was screwed. I watched this video on the way home from the grocery store, pulled into my local ford dealership and bought this part $24.00! Fixed the issue.
That’s awesome man. Glad we could help.
I thought the same thing, torque converter/tranny something but yeah it sounded bad. Crazy a dealership stocks this and it must be a common thing if ford carries it on hand. I live in a small town and they had it too. 26$ a few minutes install 1200 miles later of stop and goes running errands and no issues. Floors me this was the issue cause that grind from the vacuum system engaging sounded cringe😳😖. High five happy this worked for you too 💯🤙🏼
THANK YOU!!! This was driving me crazy. This was the exact fix - only difference from the video is the part was $33.00 from the dealer
$33? 😳😳 that's crazy. Did it at least include the solenoid too? Or just the Valve?
Thank you very much this video saved me a LOT of head ache
This is the $22. fix! When I first heard this noise in my 2017, 3.5l ecoboost F150 XLT, I thought I was dragging my muffler. It was intermittent, then it came back and this video has the same noise. Good job in also recording the noise.
When I records this video, the valve was $8. The new Blue valve is $22+ now. Not sure what they charge to increase the cost that much, but yeah.
Bro! You saved my life I thought it was a turbo going out it's the worst grinding noise!
👍👍
I just had the exact same problem for my Gen 1 - replaced the same part for Gen 1 and all is good. Much Thanks.
your welcome. Glad the video could help.
Great video. Thank you. I just bought a used 16 lariat and it's making the sound. The dealer is replacing at least one hub under the warranty ($200 deductible) but I may try this myself if the hub replacement doesn't do it. Thank you!
Try the valve for sure. Is a cheap test and keep a spare handy. Ford recently redesigned the hubs and actuators so there are massive parts delays. I waited for almost a month for mine during the holidays.
Thanks for the video on the IWE valve. Saved me $$$! Thanks....it was a quick fix.
that is great to hear and the reason I made the video.
I had the same noise and searched the internet for a solution and found your video. I purchased the part from ford (they wanted about $24 and got them to lower to $18.) The part fixed the problem and I am so thankful for your video. The noise was intermitted for a few weeks and about 1000 miles and wonder if there was could be any permanent damage.
Depending on how long you let it go, you can have permanent damage. I let mine go too long and eventually the bearing on the hub go out.
I want to give you a huge kiss on the cheek. I think you saved my truck and my marriage. After I pulled the old valve out I checked it and it leaked only on slow draw and with a quick draw it was sealing. It was so frustrating. Thank you for making this video.
Your welcome.
Great video! Scared me to death when my truck started making this noise 2 weeks ago. Yep, mechanic found a bad check valve.
Jennifer Wooten glad the video was able to help you out
First of all... I LOVE YOU MAN! Was experiencing this exact problem. Thought it was my transmission, i would hear the noise then it felt like it was slamming into gear. But I noticed it was happening about 2000rpm in any gear. Then got in contact with a Ford tech, he told me to put it into 4WD while rolling about 50 mph and if the noise stopped it was my IWE( When the 4WD is engaged there is no need for the vacuum, so the grinding noise stops). I'm thinking, here goes $1.5k to $2k gone! So I UA-camd it and found you once again! Thanks bro! Took me longer to get the part then it did to put it in! Whole assembly cost about $25 at the dealership near me. Keep it Dirty my man!
🤣🤣 that’s awesome man. Glad we could help.
Started grinding on the way north for our vacation. I called several auto parts stores but no one had one. Drove up on a Ford dealership and pulled in at 5:20 on a Friday with only 10 min to spare. Swapped out the valve, no tools in 5 min problem solved. Vacation saved.
That’s awesome man. Great to hear stories like this
Great information as I was getting the same noise but in my case my hub bearing was bad and was causing the gear to touch
Yeah, I had something similar because I let mine go for too long. the check valve is the first check of the whole system and 99% of the time its the cause.
Thanks for the video, fixed mine during lunch in 5 minutes.
Awesome man. Glad we could help
Just happened to us in our 2018 Raptor, $23 at Ford dealer and fixed in 5 minutes. Thanks for the video 👊🏼
$23 just for the check valve?
Keep It Dirty Off-Road yep. One dealer quoted me $33
VooduN 18_350 thats crazy! It’s a parts that maybe costs pennies to mass produce
Perfect diagnosis. You were a huge help, thanks!
Awesome man. Glad we could help
In the first 10 seconds I said yes to this dude
😂😂😂😂 they call that a hook! Hope the info in the video was able to help you out.
Me too🇺🇸
Keep up with this great content, it is definitely needed.
Thanks, will do!
Just done 5 minutes ago.Thank you for your video!
Awesome man. Love seeing the video helped others out there.
did it work?
It just happened to me noooooooo. 2015 4x4 lariat i put a lift on it 2.5 i thought that was the problem but now that i saw this video this might be it!
Thanks hopefully it works
Had the same problem replaced check valve and solenoid, noise gone. Thank you!
Roland Poliseno that’s awesome man, I’m glad the video was able to help
Really not happy with myself after seeing this. Thanks for the video. Wish UA-cam had helped me out with finding it months ago when I was looking for it.
Happened to me multiple times. Dealer couldn't (replicate the problem). Saw a vid on UA-cam, but, it was too late for the hubs. Took it to a "good" dealer who knew what they were doing and got the hubs replaced (under warranty). I was told that the hubs were retail $570 per......Happened again in San Antonio and thank God for Red McCombs dealership. They knew right away what the root cause was. Fixed again for free.
Sucks you had to go thru this a few times. Most dealer never check, the check valve because they don’t get much from ford when it’s that. So they go for the bigger items that lay better. And in turn never solve the root cause and it continues to damage components. Very annoying how a $10 valve can cause so many problems
Thanks buddy!! What a great video
EXACTLY what i needed to learn. I own you a cold beer anytime !! 🍺
Greetings from Québec, Canada !
Glad we could help.
Man, I replaced both of my 2010 F150 hub locking actuators and the noise is still there, I'm sure your solution will fix my problem, I'll replace that IWE check valve tomorrow. Thanks for sharing your solution with the rest of us.
Hope it helps. Also check the lines as they may leak too. In the description I have a link to OZ mechanics video on how to do it.
Did this fix your issue? I have the same year and have a terrible noise coming from the truck between 1000-1500 rpm. Sounds like transmission grinding or something.
Easy way to check man. Put it in 4wd. If the noise goes away it IWE. Then it’s a matter of figuring out what components in the IWE is the problem and the first thing to check is the check valve
I’ve been dealing with this for 2 years. Been to dealership several times but it doesn’t make the noise on command so they don’t know what it is. I tell them it’s the 4wd vacuum and they replace the hub but not the hose you showed. I spent $100 on warranty and they solidly fix squat! I’m ordering this part and fixing. Thank you for posting!!
There is a whole process to check the IWE system. It could be lines, the diaphragm and the solenoid. The check valve is the first thing to check. Sounds like the dealer not be doing a thorough check.
Danny, I've had this problem for three years. I've changed the valve the solenoid and the actuator from the dealer. At first, I was getting a pulsating humming sound not all the time. The dealer just replaced the actuator two weeks ago and now it's f#cking worse than ever now on top of the humming noise I'm getting a grinding noise that I never had. It's F#cking frustrating.
Sounds like bearings and maybe even the IWE itself is failing. Grinding noise would be the IWE not engaging all the way, while humming would be bearings. Next step would be to check the IWE lines for leaks, then check the IWE baffle is moving correctly and not leaking. Then check the bearings themselves. I recently had my bearings replaced because they were humming. My issues were very obvious and easily replicated by the dealer so they were finally able to fix.
Keep It Dirty Off-Road That's so funny that you said that, I had the right front bearing done 6 months ago and I know what a bearing sounds like. I’m also a tradesman by so I do have so mechanical background. Sorry man...I’m not trying to be mean but this is driving me absolutely bonkers. This POS is a 2015 f150 Platinum so it's not a cheap truck. And the 5-year drive train is coming up. Do you what to hear something funny...I f#cken work for Ford Motor Company.
Sorry to hear man. Completely understand your frustration. Have they checked the axel and steering?
Fixed my problem!! Thanks for the help!!
Glad we could help
Great video, my 04 f150 is making a similar noise, I just had my hubs replaced and still making the noise. I changed the solenoid as well and still doing it. Next I try this! Thanks for the info!
If the problem still persists after the valve is replaced, take a look at the lines. You may have a leak somewhere in the line. It’s a simple test using a brake bleeder kit. Check the video description for a quick video from OZ mechanic on how to do it.
How do you tell if the valve is bad? You shouldn’t be able to blow through both sides of it is that correct?
I don’t think it’s that easy. But it’s an $8 part and worth having a spare anyways as they fail all the time.
Ended up being my fix. Thanks again!
Glad you finally found the fix. Always keep a spare so if it comes back, you can quickly rule the check valve out and move on down to the other components.
Thank you guys you’re awesome, this noise was so annoying I thought it was my whole transmission LOL
Benny Fernandez your welcome. I’m glad the video was able to help
Amazing. Just the info we needed to keep our cross country trip alive! Turned a 1-2 day stopover while we got the truck fixed into a 45 minute detour. B i g T I m e T h a n k s !
Glad we could help.
Awesome video man, I have a f150 lariat starting to make that horrible noise from time to time. No check lights display up and the truck seems to run great as performance wise. I notice mine more at gentle easy take offs or from time to wine on a slow turn while accelerating. It sounds harsh like hears grinding and it’s cringy. Thought it might be a torque converter or something but it’s m definitely giving this a shot cause it sounds like it is coming from the hub area.. I’ll keep ya posted but so happy I found this cause that’s a cheaper route than what I was thinking due to the sound.🤞🏼🤞🏼Thank you for posting this💯🤙🏼
Glad we could help man. If you catch it early, 99% of the time it’s the valve. After that check the IWE lines for leaks and then the IWE bellows. Videos on how to check those is in the description
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I’ll definitely do that, my 2015 has just turned over 100k. It has the 3.5 ecoboost. I appreciate the response and help with this. Thanks again
My 2010 has been making this noise since I bought it 6 months ago. Just ordered the replacement part and will install it as soon as it shows up. I like his approach of not being afraid to say it may not fix it and that he may be human and make a mistake from time to time. Great video
Thanks 🙏. This valve being replaced is the first step to check the Ford IWE. At $8 and only 5 min to replace it’s a worth while step to rule it out as 90% it’s the culprit. The other 10% is where it gets hairy and expensive
Thanks man my dads truck is doing same noise I was thinking it was the hub itself but will try this first.
glad the video could help. it's a simple and cheap first step in troubleshooting the hubs and owe system
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad yea will try that first since it just started doing it.
Big help. Fixed my issue. Thanks!
Awesome man.
Thanks for the info. My '18 F150 is doing it with only 3,000 miles. At the dealer today, hopefully getting fixed. Wish they would design a more reliable check valve for this.
I agree with you. But I think it comes down to simplicity. My take is that Fords system is soo simple and takes the load of the truck in such a simple manner that a fix would be more complicated than it’s worth. This hub design has been around for more than 10 yrs and Ford really sets the benchmark for trucks going offroad that I don’t think they want to mess it up.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad thanks. When I get it back, I may try to install another one in line, obviously the same flow direction. Shouldn't cause a problem would it?
Not sure it will help. If the one nearest the hubs leak, it may still cause problems. Better to just keep the 2nd as a spare.
I have the same thing but I just noticed that the 1st owner did not install the hub locks so I’m hoping I can get the hose that goes down to the hub and new hub locks and hope the wheel hubs are not messed up as well
Thank you for this video! My 2018 F150 3.5 ecoboost just started this weird sound. I thought a rock got caught in fan blade or a stick was dragging or jammed in fender well. The grinding has been real brief and completely stops. Anyway I’m getting this fixed ASAP. Take care!
You sir are me hero right now
👍👍
Fixed my f150 check value today and it did it in 2wd.
Check valve is just your first step. If putting it in 4wd clears it, you may still have a leak somewhere in the IWE system. I could be the lines, or the bellow in the hub. Check the description for a link to another video that may help.
Thanks for this.. having this issue with my brand new 2018 f150 4x4 v6 3.3L. Was towing my trailer to the Grand Canyon then after a few nights parked in a cold storm the truck started making this awful metal on metal grinding sound. I opened the hood and was able to push the connections around the solenoid in just a little bit more than they were and gonna test if that was it. If not I'll try buying this part and replacing it myself. Have an appointment with a dealership on Tuesday but know they're gonna try to milk me for cash and might not even tell me the real issue. Thanks again for this.
Definitely worth trying the fix, takes less than 5 min to do and only $8. A dealer may waste days troubleshooting waiting on parts to show. If the problem persists after swapping you know it’s more serious and you’ll need warranty to fix it.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Dealer ended up being awesome and fixing the issue in a few hours and... you guessed it...it was the check valve. Could have done it myself, but the dealer didn't charge me so it's all good. Thanks for posting this video... if the problem crops up again I'll know exactly what to do.
@@user-uy3eq5hg1s that's great to hear. I'm out of the main warranty so I just keep one in the truck for the next time it happens.
DirtDays makes sense might do the same that sound is so awful. Does Ford know about this issue or what? I've seen forum threads on the f150 forums dating back to 2011 of people having this issue with 4 wheel drive either check valves or vacuum issues. Insane to me that I could buy a brand new 2018 f150 4x4 and have to replace the check valve at 12,000 miles. Never seen anyone from Ford acknowledge this and it seems like they haven't really fixed it?
DirtDays subscribed best wishes with your channel very helpful.
Thanks man this shit helped me out a lot! I put my truck on 4x4 and the noise goes away then starts acting up at high speeds hopefully I didn’t let it go for to long gonna replace mine ASAP
🤞 fingers crossed man. Glad the video was able to help.
Bro this is exactly what I needed. I just got out of warranty and I feel like my service center screwed with my Raptor.
Don’t go to KenGrody Ford. The service personnel lies and there is no accountability.
We’ve heard good and bad from them. Sales side they suck and the markups are ridiculous. On the service side it depends on your advisor.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU! this was a great info for a non mechanic, I used to be able to tear down my Harley or work on my old Dodge PW 25yrs ago without any issues it was pretty simple, but these days with all the on board computers and stuff it gets very hard for guys like me to fix problems, I saved $165 today because that is what the dealer was going to charge me to "look at it" I went in for my maintenance (that is all prepaid) and my local dealer just seems like they are always trying to get in my wallet, I have bought 8 cars from Hansel Auto group in NorCal over the past 25 yrs, how about a little customer service? anyway, loved the video I replaced the part easily, I will definitely share this on my thread!
Wow man, that's awesome and great to hear. Im glad my video was able to help.
Thank you for the video!!!!!!
Your welcome. I struggled with that noise for weeks and figured I would pass on the knowledge and help the ford community.
My 2016 F150 was doing this. I replaced the check valve and it did not fix the problem. I then replaced the solenoid that this check valve connects to and that fixed the issue. Each part was around $20 so I ordered both and then tried the check valve first as I didn't think that would fix the issue. Just FYI
Yep, Check valve is the first step.
thanks. replaced and fixed the issue..
I went out and bought a 1 way check valve for an air compressor. better check valve than the ford product. Also ,sometimes the check valve get moisture inside over time making it not work properly. I had cases were you just blow it out and reinstall it and the problem went away.
Ordered this part , hopefully it fixes it
🤞 hope it does. Just keep in mind it’s the first step in troubleshooting those hubs.
My 2014 f 150 Ecoboost is doing this. I thought it was the wheel bearing, being it happens around 80 to 100 km an hour, but I changed them, and it's still doing it. I'm going to try this next
Dead giveaway if it’s the IWE system is out the truck in 4wd and see if it goes away. If it does it’s IWE for sure and the check valve is the first thing to check. Then the lines, solenoid, and then the IWE bellows
Gracias por el video my friend
Your welcome 🙏
I had a sudden grinding driving home. I found the vaccume line had become brittle and disintegrate from the T connection on top the driver side strut mount to the solenoid.
I replaced the solenoid, the check valve and used a 3/16 od hose from fleetfarm to replace the damaged section as ford did not have this in stock. No more crazy grind but now I have a similiar noise under slight load, I think my actuator and or hub took damage and need to be replaced, maybe even the entire vaccume line. gonna dive into that tomorrow.
Yeah, make sure there is no more leaks in the system and the last step is to check the IWE bellows. If you have to replace the IWE, also inspect the hub bearings. The shavings from damaging the IWE can get in there and damage them.
Straight to the point ! Thank you
I began hearing a similar noise on my 2014 raptor today on the freeway, I checked to see if anything was loose being that it was my first time I heard that noise , didn't see anything out of the norm and made the 2hr drive home with no problem apart from that noise .Hoping it's a check valve 🤞
Lynwood 82 put it in 4wd, of the noise clears its IWE and toy first check is the valve
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad
Thanks for the input 👍
Good video
Thank you 🙏
Thanks. My truck has been doing this as well. Dealer wouldn't do shit if it didn't set a code.
that sucks man. time to find another dealer. I have a few around me and they all suck. The only reason I use my current dealer is I finally got a good service advisor.
Having this problem w my 2010 F150 5.4. It's a grinding/vibration that happens when I accelerate in low gears but while cruising it's fine. I'll give this a shot.
Loudy 2.0 easiest way to confirm is put it in 4wd. If it goes away it’s a vacuum leak in the IWE system. And the check valve is your first step
It's been happening since the day I bought my 2018 f150 right off the lot
Great info. I have a similar noise happening just at low speeds, always within 2min of starting up the truck. After that it will not happen again until the truck is shut off for awhile. Happens more while accelerating. Any ideas?
Try doing the switch to 4wd or 4auto when you hear it. If it clears right away it’s the check valve. If not you may be looking at something else like the starter sticking or something wrong with the hubs themselves.
I currently have a grinding noise coming from the front wheels 2018 Raptor, only here and there at very low speeds, only happening to 1 wheel at a time mostly front left wheel in 2wd. Sounds like splined gears that arent engaged the whole way and lightly grinding on them. Im hoping this will fix it and thanks for the vid!
SuOMinonA hopefully it’s the check valve. The best way to test is next time the noise comes on put the truck in 4wd. If the noise clears it’s an IWE leak. The first thing to check and replace is the check valve. If you still have the problem then it’s time to check the solenoid and then the IWE lines with worst case being the IWE bellow on the hub itself.
Most dealers don’t even bother doing a check on the check valve, so do that yourself first to test it out,. if it does not work, take it in. The IWE system should be covered by the powertrain warranty.
I fixed with with a new check valve and Ford wanted to charge me $1,600 to replace all the vacuum hoses that deal with IWEs 😂 I spent $21 bucks and saved a ton.
That’s nuts!! Dealers always go for the big jobs and forget to check the basics
I'm going to buy this part and see if it fixes my issue. 2016 F150 4x4 Lariat CrewCab 4 door. Front right sounding like dragging, grinding when slowing down. Just replaced all 4 rotors and pads still have the problem, although front ones definitely needed replaced due to being warped by previous owner. Man I hope this does the trick thanks for the video pretty sure this is my problem. I'll update if it does the trick.
a dead giiveaway if is the noise goes away when you put the truck in 4wd. then the IWE valve is the first check, followed by the solenoid, lines, and finally the hubs.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad awesome ok will do. So put in 4wd and if goes away more than likely this valve is the problem so replace first right if I’m reading your message correctly? Thanks for the reply!
@@F15BOYOBOY yes, putting it 4wd clearing the noise confirms it’s the IWE system. Fire thing to check with the check valve as it’s the most common item to fail
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad thank you Sir!! I will check that out tomorrow!! I will update as well.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad so seems to be the problem. I was driving and it started making a grinding noise right passenger side and almost like a brake dragging and turned 4A on and it seemed to stop. 🤷🏻♂️ hopefully this will fix it. I think it will, part is on the way 😃. Thanks again for the video and I’ll let you know how it turns out!!
Hello. Recently had to replace my transfer case, or so I thought. Turns out I am still getting a clunking noise when I drive in 4WD hi and low as well as dragging noise in the front left in 4wd. Also clunked once in reverse when wheels were turned to the right (2WD mode). I am not getting the resistance I normally get when I turn the wheels hard in 4WD and sometimes it doesn't even seem to engage. I have no idea where to start with this as it seems like multiple issues. Any ideas? This truck has been a nightmare for me.
Thanks for the video...I have a similar noise that happens when driving slowly and it happens when I lift off the throttle. When things warm up it seems to go away. For the noise on the video what speed were you going. Gonna try to engage 4wd and see if it goes away.
As it’s gets worse, speed don’t matter. Clear way to confirm is out it in 4wd. If it goes away you confirmed it’s the IWE system. Then you a need to find out what part of the system is having problems. Valve is your first check, then the solenoid, then the lines, and finally the hubs.
Great video, just replaced mine in hopes it would fix the issue, the grinding noise is still there under acceleration, in 4x4 no noise. Should I check hubs or what next, thanks
Noise on the right side only
Cody Scarlett ok, if you have already replaced the valve, next check is the solenoid, then lines themselves and finally the IWE bellows . In the description of this video is A link to a video on how to check the lines and the bellows. If your under warranty, have the dealer do it. IWE is covered under the powertrain warranty up to 50-60k miles
Thank you, I thought it was my right turbo going out.
thomas castro glad the video was able to help
Changed it 20 minutes ago, fixed the problem! 👍
thomas castro that’s awesome man. It’s why I made the video
Thanks for the video, parts are on the way. Quick question though, if its a problem that does happen and possibly a lot. How come no one has looked into replacing it with a nice aluminum check valve, then doing the lines with say stainless steel braided?
Austin Williams good question. I’m sure it’s a matter of cost and ease of installation.
In late 2018, Ford redesigned the IWE system. Same system really, just improved the quality of the parts and I’ve seen less issues since then. The way you can tell if you have it is if the check valve is blue. I also think it’s one of those things where a more robust system may be more complicated and have more issues.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad yeah sadly enough my 2019 with 7800 miles on it is doing this now. So was just wondering and seeing what my options are. If I can fix it for $20 and save my self from having to go to the dealership Im all for that. But after order the part for my truck, if it continues I guess I have to.
Austin Williams yeah, the check valve and the solenoid are the first items to troubleshoot. Dealer almost never check them and you end up doing multiple visits for expensive components. 90% of the time there is a leak in the check valve or a line. But there is no money in it for the dealers to check and replace those, so they always skip to the worst case scenario without checking the basics.
Thanks for the video. I just started hearing the grind after hitting 20k miles. After seeing your video, I grabbed one from local dealer and swapped it. One question though, does it need to be changed out every now and then?
As long as you get the latest valve (in blue) it should last years. If you get the old style (black) those fail every few months
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad thanks again! That’s what I got. Great to know
Thanks !
Great video! I change this out along with my hubs and the solenoid and it still makes the noise. Any idea?
Did you check to make sure the lines hold vacuum
I don’t know who you are but FUKN THANK YOU MAN
Miguel Mayorga 🤣 glad the video was able to help you out man
Grabbing one at the dealer today. Hope that's the fix for mine. What's that bracket that you have the cb/ radio mic clip mounted to?
It’s linked on my amazon page in the description
I have a 2016 F150 today I was driving down the road and heard the awful noise coming from my driver side put in 4x4 drive it went away drive it home Going to get the parts come Tuesday Hope this will fix it hope it's nothing else
Jason Craze if you have a leak, the check valve is the first thing to check. Next is the solenoid, then it’s the lines and finally the Hubs
I had my 2017 f-150 to the dealer a few times. I even took the TSB from Ford. They couldn't find the problem. I started calling the higher-ups and sent some emails. By the time they understood the problem, they actually had to replace the whole left hub. $30 part vs $1000 part. What do they care, Ford is paying for it.
It surprises me everyday when I hear this. Most dealers try and replace the most complicated components when most of the time it's the simple check valve.
Happening to mine. Going to get the part ASAP. How would you know if it did more damage or not??
If you still have the noise after replacing the check valve is the only way I know. Mine cleared up as soon as I replaced it. Only other option is to take them apart and look.
Thanks for the video. Im going to check mine soon. Do you still recommend getting the OEM part or is there another brand you'd recommend? I know you used OEM again. But wasn't sure if you'd recommend anything else. Thanks again.
asdf73521 I don’t think anyone else besides motorcraft makes this part. And the new blue valve seems to last much longer.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Awesome, thank you so much.
I clicked the Amazon link and it said the part does not fit my 2018 F-150
The individual check valve linked is the old valve and you don’t want it anyway. Check the updated Ford link for the blue one. And keep in mind Ford may have updated the part number since this video was released
Thank you
