Best of luck! It won't make the car silent or dramatically quieter, but I'm definitely happy with the improvement it did make in my Y. Fingers crossed you have good results!
Thanks for the video. I can’t believe Tesla doesn’t have good deals all around for wind noise reduction. This is another reason why I’m waiting a few years to buy one. I think they still have a little ways to go considering how much they cost. Stay safe out there driving.
Yeah, I wonder if my windshield issue was just part of their whole ramp-up during Covid dramas. Like I mentioned in the video it does seem to be a bit of a one-off for me since I haven't heard anyone else say they have the same issue. But after being sensitive on the issue, when I've traveled in various ICE cars, I've noticed some pretty load highway wind noise as well... then again, those were in cars $10-$20K less. In any case, I've got it pretty much all fixed now! :)
I don't have a problem with my Model 3 - it's very quiet and doesn't need an extra sound proofing. However the new Highland Model 3 is supposed to be quieter.
I’m relatively certain they will address this going forward. The other community that I have been part of is Cirrus Aircraft and their story is similar to the EV adoption and Tesla. Within the Cirrus community, the owners of the planes contributed a lot of effort toward finding solutions as the manufacturer worked through bringing the products to market and iterating through improvements.
I'll bet you're totally correct. Recent reviews of the new Model 3 in Europe & Cybertruck in the US have commented on improved noise levels so that's definitely a good sign for what's possible in the next generation of EVs. Thanks for watching!
I have hearing loss and the one thing that I don’t like about both my Model3 and Model Y (as well as the Model S) is the road noise. I cannot talk to my grandkids when I am driving. So, it was with great eagerness that I installed the RPM road noise kit. Unfortunately, it did not help at all. I guess I will check out the Highland update or the Cybertruck but I wish I could find a fix for my current cars because outside of the noise, I love the cars
Fingers crossed that Tesla starts taking road noise seriously on these new models. Consumers just aren't going to buy the excuse that road noise will be higher just because electric motors are quieter than ICEs. That's EV manufacturers' problem to solve, not us consumers'.
Nice. You're an expert now. You should announce a nationwide "Going Electric" tour with a schedule and then people can book you to install their kits when you arrive in their locale. Let me know when you go up I-81 in Virginia!
Good to know! :) Fortunately this stuff turned out being more like sticky rubber than glue and ended up coming off pretty easily later with a hair dryer when I had to totally remove them all a second time for some other detailing I had done with my car the following month. Live and learn, eh! 💸 Haha...
Hey! They're still stuck in place and I haven't had to think of 'em even once. I actually forgot about them until I read your comment just now. Haha... (That's a compliment to RPM Tesla.) Just make sure you put 'em on right the first time unlike me! 😭
I just took my 23 Model Y performance to Tesla complaining about the wind noises driving above 75mph. It gets louder as it goes faster. The service advisor said that it's normal. WTF. I use my noise app to detects the noise, it shows 72-75 decibels. I ended up getting the noise reduction kit and the 10 pieces kit from RPM. Will be back for updates as soon as I get it installed.
Best of luck!!! The Y is definitely not a quiet car. I think it’s pretty clear that Tesla is squeezing profitability out of their vehicles (intelligently so) and that comes at the expense of other things like sound deadening which becomes even more important for EVs. The wind seals I got didn’t turn my car silent, but it did result in a noticeable improvement which I was very content with. Lastly, you might want to check the windshield mounts at the base of both corner of your windshield to see if they were installed incorrectly (as mine were) which also created excess wind. Tesla initially told me my wind noise was “within spec” as well but I showed them the jacked installation of the mounts and they fixed ‘em which took a couple minutes. Good luck and hopefully you get a little wind noise reduction with the seals!
@@goingelectric7826 Thanks so much for your response! You are absolutely right. I did purchased the top silicone seal from RPM, plus the 10 pieces seal kits from them. Both did not fix the wind noise issue. But it helped a bit. I did the sounds test before and after, before the top silicone was 75-78 decibels going at 80 mph. after it drops to about 72-75 decibels. After the 10 pieces seal kit. It drops to 68-72 decibels, it's still noisy to me. I already make another appointment at other Tesla dealership, lets see what they say.
@@LysanderLH Best of luck. RPM was cool when I put mine on backwards. They sent out a replacement for free even though they didn’t have to. Make sure you install it correctly! :)
I +1 every pro tip you gave at the end. Btw, did you cut out goes for the water drain holes in your doors? I couldn't see if you had. The doors have rectangular holes by the 90 degree corner that allows water to drain from the front and top of your car. If they're plugged from the nose reduction kit, you might have water building up and stored in your door.
Excellent feedback. I think I'll need to go take a look at the car doors to make sure I didn't cover anything up. Good news is that I don't hear any water sloshing around after rain storms so hopefully I'm good with that? But I'll take a look just in case. Thanks for watching and reaching out!
I tried to install the same kit from RPM and the adhesive is no where that strong to the extend of leaving residue on the door. The ones that I received hardly stayed on the door unless you pretty multiple times repeatedly. I'm in the process is reaching out to RPM to see if the kit I received was defective.
I'm sorry to hear that. It must be quite frustrating. I was actually impressed that the adhesive has been so strong. I made this video quite a long while back and I've driven tens of thousands of miles since, and the seals are still sticking like new. But getting it off if I misapplied it certainly was "fun" as you saw in the video. Good luck!
Does your car have the newer frontside windows that are double pane? With all the new EVs coming to market in the next few years, Tesla needs to up its game on these minor issues.
Unfortunately mine was manufactured just a month or two before that upgrade came out. Poor me! 😭 But the good news is with these road noise reduction seals, interior noise has improved quite nicely.
The new laminated glass on the front side windows also protects against UV. Normal glass lets all the UV-A in and gives you wrinkles, skin cancer and eye degeneration...
On my trunk I put it close to the bend on the inside, where I saw you went towards the outside edge. If you look at the trunk I put mine over the sticker and your is offset. My trunk closes but isn't grabbing enough to complete with the soft close. I'm hesitant to adjust it and was hoping the foam compresses enough to close completely.
I definitely found the instructions to be a bit insufficient. Lots of improvising! (I’m still not 100% sure my way was the best way.) My rear lift gate opens and closes fine although on rare occasion it takes a little helping hand for me to lift it up because the power lift either isn’t strong enough and/or doesn’t expect the extra grip of the seal and then closes back down. But it does close correctly on its own. Worst case scenario, you can remove the seal and remove the sticky gel remaining by softening it with a hair dryer held a little bit away. And you can contact the company and they may send you an all new seal for free as they did for me. In retrospect, I feel like the only seals I *needed* were for the doors. It would be nice if Tesla also made thin but effective window seals since I get some noise there as well. But frunk, trunk and roof glass? I don’t think I’m getting any real noise there. You could even skip those most likely.
Maybe the roof strip is good thing but in my case it's not fit in the gap, , the problem is with the car, the gap is too narrow and it's impossible to insert the strip. Check the car before you buy :)
Definitely. I ended up getting rid of that roof strip because I don’t think it was making much of a difference and it would often be pulled out by wind at high speeds. I would be driving on the highway and then suddenly I would hear the flapping sound on my windshield! 😳
First, the door seal does not reduce noise. I could not tell the difference between before and after. Glue does not stick. Finally, I removed it. Gladly, It was easy to remove. Basically, I was wasting my time and money. I do not recommend putting a door seal, it does not matter what brand you are using.
It definitely seems like different people have different experiences. It made a difference in my case - perhaps because my Y was built particularly subpar and I could hear wind leaks in my car. I also had a badly installed windshield that had to get fixed which also reduced noise. But in cases where the car’s original seals weren’t as bad as mine, I can see that the difference would be less significant. Interestingly, my seals are still on a year and a half later and the kit was helpful for me. That said, Tesla needs to reduce wind noise over all. “Being an EV” isn’t a good enough excuse for louder interiors. It’s just an engineering challenge that needs to be overcome.
Hey! Sorry for the late response. I haven't seen any solutions for X. Perhaps you could check out the RPMTesla.com website and see if they have a kit for it. True though, our Teslas aren't exactly quiet! Hopefully someone else will be able to respond with a solution they've seen/used. Good luck!
Haha! I actually watched my 13,000 mile review on a Samsung big screen TV and the color was horrible! I look like a sunburned tomato. Haha 🌞 Good to hear the color on this one made the cut!
This is an interesting topic. Very few people I know with a Model Y I have noticed the wind noise that I have. It may be an issue related to some of the earlier productions. Apparently the month after I got mine, Tesla started with double pane windows in the car and I haven’t heard anyone complain since. My vin is in the 50,000s. They’re much higher than that now.
@@goingelectric7826 you could possibly have a manufacturing defect too. Did you ever talk to Tesla about it? My current car has really bad road noise and that’s 1 of the main reasons I want to get rid of it
@@goingelectric7826 I installed it yesterday. Took almost an hour after reviewing the RPM installation video. The new adhesive promotor wipes they included were mediocre at best. They should stick with the 3M brush on liquid bottle. The car does seen a bit quieter but I do not have any empirical evidence to back up that claim.
For my second application I just used rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth. That seemed to work quite well because you can use tons of it. I let it dry and then applied the seals. I didn’t have a lot of empirical evidence either, but I could definitely tell the back right door was much quieter and I couldn’t hear any air from the rest of the doors. I still think the windows let in more wind noise and they should. And in my case the base of my windshield is just defective. But I have definitely noticed the interior being somewhat quieter. Scientifically, it’s probably not a huge amount but I do notice it and like it.
I’m glad you were able to get everything installed correctly!
