Hey guys Frank Ó'hÁinle the scriptwriter here again. I just wanted to thank you all for your continued support of our retelling of the events of the first age of Tolkien's work, the response has been fantastic so far. Above all else though I really hope you enjoy this two part series on Beren and Luthien. It is my joint favorite tale (alongside the children of Hurin of course) in all of Tolkien's work and I sincerely hope you enjoy watching these videos, as much as I have enjoyed working as part of the team to put them together for you all. Go raibh míle maith agaibh Frank Ó'hÁinle
Here is a letter that J.R.R Tolkien wrote to his son Christopher shortly after the death of his wife Edith: I never called Edith Lúthien - but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief pan of the Silmarillion. It was first conceived in a small woodland glade filled with hemlocks at Roos in Yorkshire (where I was for a brief time in command of an outpost of the Humber Garrison in 1917, and she was able to live with me for a while). In those days her hair was raven, her skin clear, her eyes brighter than you have seen them, and she could sing - and dance. But the story has gone crooked, & I am left, and I cannot plead before the inexorable Mandos. I will say no more now. But I should like ere long to have a long talk with you. For if as seems probable I shall never write any ordered biography - it is against my nature, which expresses itself about things deepest felt in tales and myths - someone close in heart to me should know something about things that records do not record: the dreadful sufferings of our childhoods, from which we rescued one another, but could not wholly heal the wounds that later often proved disabling; the sufferings that we endured after our love began - all of which (over and above our personal weaknesses) might help to make pardonable, or understandable, the lapses and darknesses which at times marred our lives - and to explain how these never touched our depths nor dimmed our memories of our youthful love. For ever (especially when alone) we still met in the woodland glade, and went hand in hand many times to escape the shadow of imminent death before our last parting.
What I like on Sauron was not only that he had a (cruel) sense of humor, but he was much less than Morgoth after destruction for destruction sake. He wanted to forge the world, not just destroy out of anger that something was denied to him. I think that is a much better motivation for a dark lord. If I remember right than in The Two Towers it is speculated that Beren met on his escape towards Doriath Shelob (and I guess that was a unpleasent surprise for him). So the spider was among the few beings at the end of the Third Age who still remembered the events in the story of Beren and Luthien in person.
One of the key differences between Morgoth and Sauron; Morgoth representing chaos hated everything and wanted to break it. While Sauron represented despotic order.
Luthian: Hey Sauron. Sauron: What? Luthian: That's a pretty nice fortress you got there. Sauron: What's it to you? Luthian: ...It'd be a shame if someone were to...do something to it.
You know that Luthien literally sh*t herself and fainted in fear and terror when the wolf-Sauron came forth. lol The Lay of Leithian book mentioned that even Luthien's eyes were darkened with fear
Which is kinda funny because the very thing he asked for Beren to bring just to get him off his little girl caused his misfortunate death many years later 😅
I was reading Beren & Luthien and I stopped in the moment which Rhuan found Thinuviel. Then I opened YT and this video was recommended... Sometimes, I think that my phone is spying me (lol)..
Tolkien pouring so much of himself into this story and immortalizing his love for his wife in the world of Middle Earth has always been so touching to me. Great rendition.
@@killgriffinnow Earendil had some elvish blood so he had a choice whether to be elf or man. He was the father of Elrond and Elros, they got the name Halfelven because of Earendil's half elf blood. Elros chose to be a man and became the first kind of Numenor.
There was another in Gondor, I can not remember there names now but Prince Imarahil (not sure of the spelling) was from that line and Legolas recognized him as having elvish blood when they met in Minas Tiriith.
@@lnwolf7563 There are conflicting version who that was. She was among those who fled in 1980 TA when the darkness in Moria grow together with Nimrodel. Mithrellas lived with him for some time and they had a son (Galador) and a daughter (Gilmith), but later she left him without warning one night and he never saw her again. Calling Beren an average joe is pretty unfair though. The man had turned into a one-man army out of sheer desperation, and had the bounty of an elf-lord on his head. Not to mention he made it through the Ered Gorgoroth while still retaining his sanity.
I wonder how mad Sauron is after this venture ended in total failure? If his superior found out, I think he needed to run to keep his head on his body.
@@Xevos701 But it seems Morgoth did not punish him (or at least so far I know). Maybe because he wanted to forget the whole thing (since he made not a good figure in it either).
@@Xevos701 No, nowhere in the book it is mentioned that he "hid" from Morgoth or something like that. In Tolkien's the Lay of Leithian book, we have been told that Sauron went to Taur-na-Fuin *to establish a new throne and a darker stronghold. And he used to send messengers from his mansions in Taur-na-Fuin to Angband/Morgoth very oftenly.* Even Morgoth himself approved that when Luthien introduced herself as 'Thuringwethil' to Morgoth. Later, Morgoth catched her lie and told he(Sauron) had already send messengers and tidings recently.
Morgoth probably didn't even punished Sauron for this because when disguised Luthien told Melkor that she brought new tidings from Sauron's mansions in Taur-na-Fuin, Morgoth said Sauron already sent tidings very recently and he suspected that Luthien was a spy. So as we see that there was no problem between Sauron and Morgoth after the events of Tol-Sirion. Also the Silmarillion says after the War of Wrath; *in him(Sauron), the bonds of Morgoth were very strong.*

What a terrible cliff hanger to leave us at lol I was prepared for the next epic part of the story of beren and luthien with fucking Huan showing up haha
Sauron is Morgoth’s terror weapon here, he clearly prefers to capture, torture and kill his enemies after they’ve run out of uses for him. Kinda seeing a similarity to the Witch King of Angmar being Sauron’s chief commander and tool of destruction operating in Angmar and Minas Morgul while Sauron serving Morgoth has his own base of Tol-in-Gaurhoth and goes to his own ends to terrorize the enemies of Evil.
I love you guys y’all amazing , you should be the producer for the Amazon rings of power. In your historical channel you get the facts right and amazingly on the lord of the simirilian also keep it up
And a half-goddess, don't forget. Huan was so terrified that he even step back for a moment, and that mean something. So it was really close I would say. And it was said that only the greatest of all wolves could kill Huan, so I think it is not THAT much of a shame that Sauron lost. Huan was much more than just a dog.
Sort of. Magic in Tolkiens world is often sung (as you could see in the Lord of The Rings with the song of the barrow wight). And here Finrod recalled songs of hope and light, of distraction and courage, but Sauron countered every of his words with melodies of dicoveredtruth, and of despair and destruction, and of course in the end he won and all their disguises were ripped of them and they were defenseless before his eyes... I think there is a poem in the Sil which recalls that.
The elves are soooo bad ass in these series… kudos to your team and the artists specifically, I fell in love with your art, specifically the helms of Armorian kings and armor of elvish lords. How I can purchase the one?
They were straights who yet again got the focus & attention, because they fulfilled some ridiculous idealisation of meta-physical purity & perfection... that got mapped out onto/into our physical realm/world. Well I think next one will be the rest of B+L's story. Then the Nirnaeth comes soon after that. Then the story of Turin, where things get REALLY dark...
@@desmondd1984 I guess they will split that story in two parts too, since that guy was really into a lot of catastrophes. To be honest, the "person" I liked in that story the most had scales. The great wyrm had some cool scenes, although he spoke only a few times. But the scene in which Morgoth curses Hurin is also cool.
This should've been the story for The Rings of Power. Except they probably would've screwed it up too and made Luthien another stereotypical girl-boss like Rey/Galadriel etc, and made Beren a Homer Simpson type bumbler. So, I guess I'm glad they didn't try to tell the story of Beren and Luthien

Wow. Excellent.
Everyone asks "who were Beren and Luthien"
But not "How were Beren and Luthien"😔
R.I.P. Finrod 😞
What had they done to you in Rings of Power?😠
Try 1 of asking the channel to ( for April fools) cover the paintball war from community
Oh! I know this one actually!
Thanks Tolkien Untangled!
Cool vid
But I thought Finrod was killed by Sauron off-screen after talking about stones
Sia su wizard che su king's general potresti mettere i sottotitoli in italiano
Lovely
Can't wait for that mongol alt history
who does this music?
Better love story than Twilight.
Finrod Brolagund
❤️
This should've been the story for The Rings of Power. Except they probably would've screwed it up too and made Luthien another stereotypical girl-boss like Rey/Galadriel etc, and made Beren a Homer Simpson type bumbler.
So, I guess I'm glad they didn't try to tell the story of Beren and Luthien
What if Finwe and Fëonor survived
Warhammer Fantasy pls
They really are ignoring better storylines like these and focusing on other storylines that really could be put back.
Although I love this channel, this is one of those things that shouldn't be spoiled by a summary regardless how well done.
