I live on the Gulf Coast and have dealt with hurricanes -a lot. If you are in a low lying area, don't take the chance. Just evacuate before everyone else who decided too late also tries to leave.

Yes, I’m not into fear mongering but, I think the impact of this hurricane is going to be far worse than the media is letting on. I live in north west AZ and we’ve been having intense storms since last night (Thursday 8/17/23) and the brunt of the hurricane/tropical storm isn’t scheduled to arrive until late Sunday or Monday, which is still two days away.

@@Sunsun-ev2xd If the weather is heading your way, you could do a bit to prepare. Find the local, state, and federal emergency services and weather reporting sites on your phone and save the tabs or info in case any need for them arises. A battery-powered weather/emergency radio can offer info when little else can sometimes. Pack a bag with clothes, food, water, supplies, and what else you need for a few days, just in case you need to travel suddenly.

For those curious, the most comparable event to hit this location was Hurricane Kathleen in 1976. It followed an almost identical path, as a hurricane before becoming a tropical storm, in the same way Hilary is predicted to.
The notable difference is that Kathleen never generated an eye, while Hilary has discarded one and generated a second.
Kathleen caused massive flooding of low-lying areas along with mudslides and flash floods from the mountains. The damage was considerable and expensive, with homes washed away, some towns destroyed, some flooded by 6 feet of mud and debris.
People in low-lying areas should prepare to lose power and water and experience days of flooding. People along the coast should expect storm surge and potential damage to buildings in high winds. People in the valleys around the mountains should be prepared to evacuate due to mudslides and flash floods coming down from those mountains.
The latter is the biggest concern IMO. I may be an amateur, but physics does not change. If those mountains experience a foot or more of rain, as some are expecting, those valleys will become channels for all that water and mud.

On February 14, 2019 heavy rain led to closures and water rescues across the Coachella Valley. 3.69” of rain fell at Palm Springs International Airport making it the wettest day on record ever recorded. I live in "The Pass" in banning CA. Right between the San Gorgonio Mountains, and The San Jacinto Mountains. Previously I lived in Cathedral City, right next to Palm Springs. I call the Feb 14 2019 event "THe Valentines Day Massacre". The rain coming off San Jacinto caused large sections of Rte 243, which goes up to Idyllwild (San Jacinto Mts which Palm Springs backs up to) to be washed away. Sand, mud and rocks did what they always have done for millenia. They washed downhill. You don't need a foot of water. The total annual rainfall in the Palm Springs area is very limited. In January and February, the average rainfall is about an inch or less each month. For the year, the average total rainfall in Palm Springs is about 5 inches-or less-for the yearly total. Rainwater here is not channeled by underground conduit like in other places, for instance Pennsylvania. Instead it is channeled above ground. In many places, a "wash" exists. A dry riverbed. They are usually flat. THey look like much of the rest of the desert. Until it rains. Many roads cross washes. One would barely notice driving into / across a slight depression in the ground, when it's dry. When it rains the fine particulate matter of the silicate soils turns into mud, and flows. It doesn't take much, and the "drainage systems" are overwhelmed. This is what is going to happen in the deserts and mountain communities adjacent to them. Additionally, there are plenty of steep mountains in SoCal. Humans have built all over them. Without much thought. Especially since there has been ongoing drought here for approximately 22 years. Climate overall has been trending dryer over the last 120 years. Fires fires have taken away the maritime chaparral biomes woody plants ( a natural cycle) and inland, many woody plants ( overgrown due to fire suppression) and trees, have been burnt down. Thus their root systems will not hold mountainsides and hillsides from becoming mud slides. My guess, having experienced such events in the past, is that 2-4 inches of rain over a short time period is going to expose homo sapiens penchant for development in areas susceptible to flooding, as ill advised. Perhaps a better word is ignorant. Unadvised? Mal -advised? Arrogant? Definitely this rainfall, if in excess of 4 inches, will expose the hubris of SOME of homo sapiens building practices and choices of location. Fortunately or unfortunately, insurance companies and banks have interwoven themselves into the fabric of our legal system. So most people should be insured (hopefully a rider for flood insurance beyond typical home insurance) . SOme are going to find out the hard way. C'est la guerre. They'll build more homes, there will be more humans. Cheers.

@Orcinus1967 Thanks for sharing your first-hand knowledge and experience about the lay of the land, hydrology, and climate in the Inland Empire and deserts around Southern California.
I live in Oceanside but work in Riverside. I've spent at least 70 years living in Southern California. I expect mostly flooding and flash flooding in the mountains and deserts from Tropical Storm Hilary.
We have been informed that severe flooding in Tijuana will cause raw, untreated sewage to flow into the ocean.
I live in Loma Alta in Oceanside. The historic section of Oceanside was built up on this hill for very good reasons. You can look at maps that tell you how often a given property is likely to be totally submerged in the period of time known as a century, i.e., one hundred years. Nice to be atop a hill. We had no problems with recent extreme rainfall in 2019 - 2021. The neighborhood passed the test of time. No doubt, the Native Americans knew all of the areas where flooding was a problem. So did the Padres. Junipero Serra chose Oceanside for his personal headquarters at Mission San Luis Rey I always look to earlier cultures who were familiar with long-term rainfall patterns. We've been in a drought for 122 years so flooding has not been properly planned for in many communities. With rising sea levels, those who live on the beach have brought huge boulders and placed them between their homes and the ocean. This is a temporary fix. Retreat from global coastal areas will result in the largest human migrations in history.
I lived at Swamis in Encinitas and had 100 mph winds hit my condo vack in 1991, or so.. I thought that the glass in the windows and sliding glass doors would not withstand that wind atop a sea cliff 75 feet above the ocean.
I'm not worried except for rainfall on freeways. Riverside has good drainage. Lytle Creek might overflow its banks and water will run down from the hills of Ontario. That's expected. Dry stream beds and arroyos will fill up with mud slides, as you said.

Be prepared. God takes care of those who take care of themselves. Many Christians fall into the trap of inactivity. Many Christians ask God for help, but then expect God to do everything Himself. They excuse this by pointing to the fact that God will provide according to His will and in His timing. However, this is not a reason for inactivity. If you are in an area susceptible to flooding, find shelter somewhere else. All the prayers on the world will not stop the water from rising. The reality of physics has a way of getting in the way of the myth of mythology.

It doesn't matter if the infrastructure is taken care of or not, it's not been built to deal with this kind of rainfall, just as Texas wasn't built to deal with ice storms.
It also doesn't matter if no storm surge is expected, Hurricane Kathleen still flooded massive areas of LA, and wiped out towns at the base of the Laguna Mountains. Tide is high, runoff will flow into the sea, localized coastal flooding is expected, along with flooding of low-lying areas and the valleys from the mountains.
The main issue is flooding from the runoff. If this storm drops what it's expected to drop on those higher peaks they're likely going to experience considerable flash floods and mudslides.

These are hilly areas where mudslides have been a common occurrence in recent years. They are also showcasing areas where the drainage systems are clearly not functional due to the mismanagement of all things Californian. For the rest of the state, this has been just a normal weekend with moderate rainfall at best. It hasn’t even been heavy rain. This is why nobody trusts the media.
