- Tropical Storm Hilary moved through Southern California overnight after making landfall in Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Sunday. It's been decades since a tropical storm hit California, and it brought record rainfall, flooding and mudslides. Carter Evans reports.

That building is my father in laws, it used to be a restaurant. I can’t believe how much damage was done! We live in riverside, and the storm wasn’t bad here at all, so I didn’t think it was going to be that bad over there! The inside is so much worse then the outside. We are all shocked that this happened! 😞
Really sad. 🤕 Hopefully it has been covered by insurance at least? 🙏🏼
No it's not. It's my families office which we build from the ground up. You must be looking at the wrong building. This is located on vista chino and date palm. With the Grace of God it could have been worse. Thank you Jesus.
Is it possible for a journalist to report about anything without resorting to sensationalism? The storm was huge and deserves attention, but the added drama. Oh my!
It's all fearmongering when it comes to climate these days.. it was a storm ffs
On the bright side, at least California's fire season isn't so bad this year.
But with this rain, vegetation will grow faster and with the Summer still hot It will dry which can lead to more fires.

UHM, That ain't mother nature!LOL That is from geoengineering & HAARP...
@@brad144kYou're literally insane. Lmao
It hit so arbitrarily.... We're fine in central San Diego but boulders feel along the 8 just miles east... Some folks fine, low lying areas and mountains devastated.
That's going to be a lot of clean up for days. They're going to need an army of plows and pressure washers to clean all that mud up off the roads and freeways... along with digging out cars and trucks stuck in it.
That's right once again it's preparing for the worst pray for the best
'Cause prayer works so well. How'd it work for keeping this from happening?
This is beautiful..this is nature, Purge it all!
Just devastating!
California needs to stash all this rainwater for next year’s wildfires that are always set by the forestry department
They don't have the means to do so. Easier said than done. They're building a reservoir in Northern CA, which costs billions of dollars, and won't be completed until 2030.
HOLY MOLY !
For the people that keep trying to downplay what just happened in California because it was only a tropical storm and they've been through "real" hurricanes in Florida and such....There's 2 major differences. 1st is that the building codes for the infrastructure in Florida require that buildings, highways, etc are built in a manner that is capable of withstanding storms like this and worse. This is not the case in California. 2nd- is the drastic difference in terrain. Florida is basically swamp marshland sponge that has the capability to absorb the precipitation and the coast line is the low point in elevation so the water that isn't absorbed by the land just drains right back into the ocean. The California deserts are literally the opposite. The sun baked land absorbs about as much moisture as a porcelain plate, and the deserts are valleys are surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides which basically create a procelain bowl. Then the storm clouds get caught up by those same mountains (essentially the rim of those porcelain bowls) slowing them down and then wring them out like you do to laundry when washing by hand. There are other factors as well, but this 2 big ones. So when you go to make a comparison take into consideration the different circumstances and factors.
Literally the only logical comment in here. There's hope after all.
Well let's go through this.
1. California is surrounded by oceans, where do hurricanes and tropical storms come from?
2. The nitwit Gvr has been more concerned with boys using girls bathrooms, taking parents rights away, fixing ppl that leave that gross state than spending money on barriers. Dumping fresh water into the ocean do he can tax you more.
CA gets what it deserves.
We get hurricanes every year you got a tropical storm.
Yeah.. i was tired of the stupid florida comments.
I've lived in both places and I agree with this!
Yeah , sometimes i see comments that they say "the media is over exaggerated news about the storm" "the news making it dramatic" . Sometimes it's better tobe ready than it's become too late for somebody which is greatly affected because of some cities and counties topographic location. It's better that the government make them prepared and warned or who gonna warn them ?!
Unprecedented!
“California”? Bw specific! There was no storm or hurricane and the rain only affected some areas
WHY IS IT ALWAYS RECORD BREAKING? I REMEMBER WHEN IN california we had no city storm drains! Street really flooded
Every spring I see cali flood in the news
The desert areas have no storm drains, but the big urban areas like San Francisco, L.A., San Diego have magnificent storm drain systems.
I grew up in the San Francisco area and now am in Las Vegas and the drainage here in Vegas is practically non existent and even the smallest of storms causes minor flooding in areas.

How much of this is stock footage ? I just talked to my Bud in Huntington Beach last night and I just ain't so. Yep unusual this time of year but it's not like what the media spews. I remember the last time we had a similar circumstance we did indeed have some awesome surf though - especially off San Clemente.
Orange County is far from Palm Springs that’s why
Yeah most people west of Cleveland National Forest didn’t get hit with much.
That's just the way some storms are. One block has little damage and the block over can have roofs ripped off and trees down. Newer homes tend to get flooded more. As all the higher ground is built on first. I suppose living by a stream is nice in good weather but they do flood.
The coast was barely grazed....this footage is from the desert areas on the other side of the mountain ranges the run up and down the state. Remeber after the soil bakes in 120°f+ temperatures the terrain is akin to that of a porcelain plate, it absorbs basically no moisture and anything on the surface gets swept away with the water, and then combine that with the recent fire damaged areas and you have no root systems to hold down the topsoil and now you get feet of mud just like what was depicted in the news
i am actually happy we got all this water. this state is way too dry.
That water is contaminated. Smh !
We're here in Florida, and I must, no where is safe, just pray your way through it folks, it will turn around
It's a nothing.
This is part of our collective karma and dharma (actions and reactions, cause and effect, as w sow, so shall we reap), climate change will play it self out for decades to come as we have been polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gasses for decades. NO, prayer will not make it turn around. Karma is a universal law that cannot be escaped, prayer or no prayer.
Sorry, but didn't you pray for this not to happen? How'd that work for you? For them?

I was 1.5 inches where I live with hardly any wind
In my area it flooded with a lot of wind but the same storm literally happened last year with hail which is really rare since I live in a desert area but it wasn’t as bad as they made it seem it’s literally just a storm
Love to see it
If I hadn't gone through a few hurricanes in Florida I would feel for California. What they went through in Calif, is like a South Florida summer time afternoon rain storm.
Dude it was a joke considering the size of the southwest the tropical storm covered
Yes, you're accustomed to arroyo washouts and head-high mud on a yearly basis, of course

It happened 84 years ago? So, everything is ok. All normal. Just summer weather. RIGHT?

I remember when the things on the View said Hurricane Ian hit FL because it has a Republican Governor……hmmm what is their thought on this one?
I remember when it was said Katrina happened because of sinfulness. Dumb people say dumb things.
Nature has nothing to do with politics, but stupid comments like the ones on The View, have everything to do with STUP1DITY!!! I live in Southern California by the way, these are times when we need to stand together as a country, not divided as enemies!!
OMG! OMG! OMG! You found the one time in history that someone blamed a weather event (as opposed to Global Warming) on a Republican. Using the God's Wrath argument to disparage your political opponents is reprehensible regardless of _"weather"_ it's done by a Liberal or a Conservative.
@@lioneaglegriffin They weren't dumb in naming a hurricane for Hillary.
Im sure most people can understand that the weather is indifferent to your political alignment
Building in water corridors is stupid, but yet local building departments continue to rubber stamp each and every building permit...
The government will keep saying this puts no dent in drought, but everywhere everyone looks is water. lol. In vermont they finally gave up on the drought talks when hills were sliding away.
❤❤❤❤
They needed the rain
I think that strong winter storm )that triggered blizzard warnings for our mountains) we had earlier this year was stronger than this tropical storms. Homes must be weak out east if they can’t withstand winds like that. Imagine them in the Santa Ana winds now! SMH
Weak housing that can't withstand wind is a Trump conspiracy. Of-course we know, if Hillary had been DearLeader rightfully installed in 2016, there might have been war there might have been famine there might have been social calamity ------ but there wouldn't have been pandemic XiJingFlu/Wuhanvirus. ... Because Amer-lefters wouldn't have had to panic & employ CCP biological-warfare to rid Trump & wouldn't now having to manipulate HurricaneHillary to blow tragedy into California to motivate voters for OBiden/Newsom.
There is a tree inside 20 feet long, never going to fix it. And it was supposed to open a restaurant for a local community, but the mud just came.
They say it never rains in Southern California but girl don't they warn ya it pours man it pours!
Don't flee California. You people are very strong. You can do it. Stay in California. I've seen some people sent prayers. Just wait for them and everything will be great.

Will this benefit any of the lakes that became famous from drought? Or is this more south
Almost all of the California reservoirs had already recovered because of higher than usual snow last winter, and rain this year. Lake Mead is still low, but that is more from misuse than drought.
@@papasquat355 I understand that from the videos, just curious if this will raise water, more so towards lake mead.
They really don’t know how to drive in the rain over there.
Ok, I guess y'all can stop praying for rain so much...

Didn’t even touch the bay!
California needs more record rains!❤
The cherry on top would be for the San Andreas to blow.
There is water coming down the wash, well duhh Homer. Then people cannot even drive if it rains??
Let’s keep it in perspective- 13% of California was effected by this storm. Sensationalism is what the media is all about. Hope everyone in the effected areas are OK.
The mainstream media sensationalizing the news? Say it ain't so!
Here's a bit more perspective for your point, 13% of California's geographical land mass is 21,280mi². You can fit RI, DE, CT, NJ, and just under 2/3 of NH in that 13%
I'm okay but I was a bit bummed out when I had to stop building my ark and I had to return all my blow up rafts to the local sporting goods store
Do you have any idea large CA is?

Here is my point record-breaking rainfall is what they just said and tomorrow they will say we are in a severe drought
Yes the storm was bad, absolutely it caused a lot of damage, but could reporters refrain from sensationalizing everything? Maybe try getting your ratings from more simple reporting and less hyperbole.
😮
actually to the contrary it was quite a weak storm. These news fools are speaking in relative terms. That weak storm sweeping over populated mountainous areas is going to cause devestation everytime. That old red barn building has been lucky for 75-100 years not to get hit.
What level of disaster will cause Fed to stop raise interest rate
Overhyped and why can’t they just say Southern California? Y’all act like it was the whole state that got effected. I’ll also note that Northern California has already had its fair share of multiple atmospheric river storms and a record high snowpack.

What caused the tropical storm 84 years ago?
Or the tropical storms every year for the last 1000?
Rare weather events will happen from time to time. What we need to look out for are pattern changes when these rare every 100 year events become more frequent and regular. If something that has only been recorded as happening 6 times in the last 700 years starts happening every 5-10 years, yeah that’s probably a cause for concern.
@@KFA8piece yeah no. We don’t have data going back 700 years, Sweetie.
And if things become “more frequent”, how exactly are you going to prove they have anything to do with anything?
The 70s had way more blizzards and way more cold winters. That was a pattern
Then it stopped.
Weather can’t be predicted
@@RobertMJohnson 🤣🤣🤣 Data and other records haven’t always been the same as it is today but there are plenty of ways that we can observed recorded history that also records major events surrounding major weather phenomena. Record keeping techniques have changed but it’s not like prior to 150 years ago there was never any record keeping done. They have figured out a narrowed time frame for some ancient volcanic eruptions based on comparing written accounts of events as well as study of carbon in the ice caps and even cross comparing that with extensive study of tree rings (which how wide they are shows how much growth and sun, atmospheric carbon, drought, and flooding all will affect this). A number of major floods that are rare but occur occasionally for different regions have also been traced back hundreds of years this way with past historical record keeping and other scientific observations.
Science and history don’t exist in a bubble.
As for attributing frequency of events to anything; What factors surrounding what we know causes certain events has also changed? Following the chain of cause and affect. Keep asking that question all the way down the line, the further back you go.
Yes the 70s had more blizzards. Summers weren’t on average as hot either. 28 years ago seeing a week straight of nearly 100° days during the summer in the mid-Atlantic region was not typical. Maybe a couple days in a row of low 90s, but a week straight at 98°+? No. Hotter summers and a lot less snow. Pollution is also a lot worse now. If you don’t think pollution as an effect on the environment then you haven’t looked beyond your nose much. They have been tracking average global and regional temperatures for hundreds of years. And there was a stark change after the Industrial Revolution.
But I guess just burry your head in the sand. That totally accomplishes something. For sure. Mmmmhmmmm.
@myballsitch69 exactly. That’s the thing that we are going to have to look out for. If it happens again in the next 20 years, and then again 10 years after that, and then again 5 years after that, we should really be concerned. That’s a big pattern change. Taking note of conditions that let to it now, and what we can find the last time it happened will all be important to compare between moving forward. What trends and patterns changed in the years in between? What other occurrences have also started to occur more regularly that also weren’t before?
