What I don’t understand is, why are these people driving during a hurricane in the first place?? I was born and raised in Houston, but I still don’t understand people who do this. Usually storms like this almost always mean high water and flooding and I wouldn’t be driving at all unless my life absolutely depended on it for some reason.

I’m pretty sure he used the back pain as an excuse. The poor guy’s likely terrified of water, which is very normal for so many people. He just was probably too embarrassed to say, “hey dude I’m terrified of water and I’m freaking out here” because he was being filmed. I feel bad for him. No one ever thinks water is going to sneak up on them like that.😢

Walking around in flood waters is probably worse than driving in them. You can drown in that if you aren't strong and the current is rough enough. Houston freeways and highways are made to flood and become "bayous" to reduce the likelihood of homes and businesses flooding. Anytime there is more than a few inches a rain they tell us to be careful on what roads we take etc so it's not just this event.

    • @samattox2

To be completely fair you don’t know what’s in that water when it comes to sharp debris. Plus a drain can open up and easily sweep a person away. Obviously that water’s not impossible to walk through but it’s a big risk

@aamerdol01 as a construction worker whose worked on installing new manhole covers since 2005. A major factor via the systemic flooding in the City of Houston is the negligence in maintaining clean drainage systems. In Houston, our drainage systems are clogged via massive accumulated debris, garbage obstructing, trash & concrete stuck in the drainage systems, inlets etc. It’s pure incompetence and I’ve seen it for almost 2 decades. Even the various bayous are riddled with years of accumulated garbage.

I figured landfall would happen sooner, so I actually went to the breaker and cut off all the non-essential appliances and energy-suckers to make sure not to overload it before bed. Dunno if I'll get power back tonight (lotta trucks down the road with cherry pickers--must be a big job), and neighbors seem to be okay. Lotta downed trees and limbs everywhere. The good thing about living out-county is this weekend we're all gonna have plenty of fuel for cookouts and bonfires thanks to all the wood on the ground (hee hee).

You wouldn’t think it, but this storm was kind of a surprise to many in Houston. Pretty much all local news coverage and a prominent local weather blog all kept saying it would not be a problem for Houston. Even as recent as 2 days prior to landfall they were still saying at most we’d get a couple inches of rain but it would be south Texas problem. Wasn’t until the final day when people started stocking up on supplies, and even then the winds were not expected to be strong enough to knock out power except those close to the coast. That said, Houston is very lucky that it did not intensify more as this was about the worst possible track it could take.

People just can't help driving too fast in deep water. They seem to think that once they are in it, or even when it is shallowing and they haven't killed the motor yet, they should "punch it" to get out. Then the bow wave builds up over the grill and into the engine air intake which is usually just under the leading edge of the hood. On my Grand Cherokee it's above the driver's side headlight.
