Nobody wants to be a bus driver with the way this generation of kids act. It's almost unprecedented, the juxtaposed level of immaturity and overinflated sense of being grown. Plus add the increased levels of bullying, it makes for a very stressful situation. Both dealing with the kids and the parents of kids' generation
......dealing with delinquent children AND trying to safely maneuver an 80 ft long vehicle is enough to try anyone's patience........

@@urbanurchin5930 Buses are usually 25 - 45ft in length, they are not a tractor trailers which are usually 72ft.
However, I do get your point and speaking of tractor trailers trucking jobs pay way better and have way less hassle.
Don't think many parents will be caring much about the drivers.
Well I guess parents need to start driving their kids then. Leave earlier tell your job your gonna be a lil late. Unless you want to teach your brats how to act and behave on a school bus and have respect for the driver. Don't blame the lack of drivers on the schools, your inconvenience is your kids fault .
I'll be very interested to see how the native plants and animals in Death Valley react to receiving years worth of rain in the span of a few days.
It will be a short flowering cycle but very stunning.

BUS DRIVER SHORTAGE. Maybe if parents raised respectful students not only would there be no driver shortage, but no teacher shortage either.
I couldn’t agree more! It’s one of the reasons why our schools are a mess. There is no way I would drive a bus with the types of behaviors I have witnessed in my last couple of years in education. The buses need another adult so the driver can focus on driving safely. But that is an impossible expectation because they can’t even fill the bus driver’s positions.

It started raining here in Las Vegas today; it looks like well into the night. It’s a welcome change from the triple digit hot days in the past weeks. We really need the rain to saturate the desert. Thank God! Praying for safety in other areas that’ll be hit by the storm in the northwest.

Hurricane: in FL we put away loose stuff outside, get enough bott led water for a week, have non perishable food for a week. Don't expect po wer for 1-5 days. Specifically for CA: flash floods will be your problem, don't drive thru standing water, your empty concrete rivers will fill, stay home, if you have overhanging branches cut them now. Stay home!

Not sounding Lahaina's alarms is indefensible. I hope he didn't succumb to pressure from someone above him (ie. the Mayor or Police Chief)...not to sound the alarms. That all needs to come out in the investigation.
Didn’t sound like he succumbed to anything. He doubled down in fact and says he’s leaving for health reasons. I feel confident from the tone of his statement, his reasoning etc that this was his doing alone. Who else would say they have no regrets afterwards?! Was the most shocking part of it.

I can't remember the last time a newscast didn't contain at least one wild weather story. No matter the season, heat domes, polar vortexes, droughts floods, hurricanes, tornados that always seem to make a bee line for the nearest trailer park. The loss of life and upheaval of lives is tragic.

The pay is not enough when you only get to work 4 hours a day.
As a school bus driver in Roseburg Oregon, I make just 20.25 per hour and it is not enough.
Good point. It is not enough to even supement the family income. I was also thinking about all the stories of kids and parents hassling drivers might make the job not so appealing. What about staggering divery times? Get the younger kids first then do a second route for high-school. It would be more work hours. High school kids can also be left alone in the morning so parents can get to work.

Rather than changing everybody's schedule and wasting more fuel, I think it would make more sense to simply raise the pay so that way it makes up for the lack of hours.
As crazy as it might sound I think that raising the hourly wage to $50 an hour would solve the problem.
It may be too late for those devastated by the fire, but perhaps instituting different alarms for different emergencies could help save future lives. The US Navy uses different alarms for different emergencies, hopefully it could help.
The alarms they had where for fire, floods, volcanoes ect... they just thought wrong and didn't use them at all.

Having lived on both coasts, I can say with all honesty that there is a huge difference between the two when it comes to "hundred year storms"). The East coast prepares by using tried and true methods up to and including evacuations. The Southern California approach is different. Rather than using the tried and true methods that other states use, they plan to respond...after the fact. But they are understaffed and slow to respond, especially if roads are washed out. Which is the same as having no plans at all. Remember this past winter? The San Bernardino Mountains were hit with hundred year storms, back to back. People died. The response was muddled by people wanting to see the snow. The utilities weren't restored for weeks! When we were there it only took them 6 days to restore our power.
3 "hundred year storms" in a year. Beyond unprecedented.
I hope people take heed and get out of places that are prone to flooding or washed out roads. Because you know that help won't be able to get to you. I'm wishing you all the best, and hoping the storm loses power. If it's a cat 4, you should leave. Head inland, far inland.

I can definitely understand this. I moved to Houston in 2020 and we were so unprepared for the 21 snow storm as it never happens here but it did. Our area was without power 3 days and temperatures were negative. Thankfully my roommate parents were in town and their Airbnb had power. We are now prepared. I have lived in Georgia and California and can tell you they definitely aren’t prepared for this just like Georgia isn’t prepared for the earthquakes they have been having. It’s like the climates have flip flopped.

It’s seems to be hard to believe for many, but there simply wasn’t enough time to evacuate! Not to mention the only way out of town was through the fire. Once fire gets out of control in conditions like that…..there isn’t anything to be done. It’s horrible.

It's irresponsible of the media to not fully explain the reason for the decision not to turn on the, primarily, tsunamis warning sirens.
Large organizations, including government, tend to retain people who like the structure provided by rules and procedures. Especially for the career people, you learn not to stick your neck out or try to make decisions three levels above your paygrade. This employee fell into that pattern-thinking trap and either didn't feel empowered to override it or thought reflexively that he was risking getting fired if he didn't stick to the purpose of the warning system. Heck, he could sue for reinstatement and even try an "I'm not paid to think" line of argument.
@tc559it was reported that they did send emergency alerts to cell phones but many didn’t get the message due to already downed power lines, and interrupted cell service.

It's not going to hit for a few days. Hurricanes are slow.
Here in Miami Florida whenever there's a severe weather or other issue that requires immediate action we get a very loud alarm notice on our phones, radios, tv's and internet.
With details about what the issue is and how we should react.
In south Miami-Dade we actually have 60's era civil alert alarms with extremely loud audio speakers telling us to turn on any connected devices for details.
It's actually a system to announce problems with Turkey Point nuclear power plant emergencies but it can be repurposed as per government demand.
The sirens would have given people blind to the real reasons for the alert to seek higher ground and to move inland. Not what we would have wanted to see. Should there have been a plan for catastrophic wild fires. Yes! A different signal or cadence or even public service announcement instructing residents to move toward the sea not away.
The construction of homes and the thin rim of real estate including the roads and the classic trade winds feeding the blaze was a recipe for disaster.
Sad.
Initiation of evacuation via the US Navy or local boats could have saved countless lives.
We were not prepared. No one person is responsible. The system of checks and balances failed.

Probably the most likely reason the sirens weren’t sounded in Hawaii is because the person in charge, never even had it cross his mind to use them, sort of like ‘Why would I use a Tsunami warning system for a fire?’

Herman Endiea did his job according to what was necessary. He explained the citizens of Maui might misinterpreted what emergency was happening. Questioning him has stressed him out to the point his blood pressure is probably through the roof. Leave the man alone. Don't resign, take medical leave until you are well. Every job has an assistant when the boss is off.
He made a mistake that 85% of the workforce probably would have made. He also failed to apply on-the-spot critical thinking to what he thought were set procedures, or thought he wasn't empowered to do that. I think he realizes the mistake now and it looks just awful, though still explainable. He was supposed to think like a leader and he thought like a bureaucrat.
It seems to me that interstate 8 between San Diego and El Centro CA was partially destroyed by a tropical storm coming up out of the Gulf of California in 1976, 1977 or 1978.

I'm glad the emergency official resigned. I hope he lives with this guilt for the rest of his life. Regardless if the siren would have saved people the simple fact that he didn't deem it necessary is incomprehensible. I also hope the lawsuits against the power company help compensate the families so they can start rebuilding their lives and return to some semblance of normalcy.
Most people I know say the same thing - that if they heard the sirens they would have gone mauka , which would have been towards the fires. We all think the sirens are for tsunamis. It is not the Island way to blame someone for doing something he thought was the right thing.....
SoCal was hit by Hurricane Norman in 1978. Also “tropical storm watches” are a relatively new system… the area has been hit by a handful of tropical storms and a few hurricanes in the past. Please it’s not unprecedented or once in a lifetime.
