So what do you think? Is the R5MKII worth the upgrade? Are you going to get a good discount on the older model? Are you switching systems? Tell me about it in the comments!
The best feature is the new sensor. However I am rocking a new R5 at a reduced price of $2999. I have used a R6 M2. The R5 is a nice to have. 24 mp have been a predictable sweet spot for my needs. Heck even the R3 an awesome option.
I personally thought the upgrades were worth it. It's an investment for my business, so it was super easy to place my order this morning. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video here.. I own R5. I am not a action photographer.. I mainly shoot portraits, landscape, and street photography. At this moment, I am not sure about DR(16 stops), color rendering, and LCD display resolution(spec says 2.1m dots, BH says 4.2m dots).. Wait and see situation here.. Hope you do test these areas and let us know once R5II is on your hand. Thank you..
I have the new RF35mm 1.4. It came with a filter holder, but no actual filter. There were also no filters upon launch. You have to buy gels and cut them out. It's basically an arts and crafts project. Not convenient at all.
The short answer is no. There's not enough features in the mark 2 that would sway me to sell my R5 mk1 at a discount and spend $4300 on the mk 2. Not interested that much in video, I would prefer a high end, high resolution photocentric camera. My suspicion is that Nikon, Sony, or Fujifilm will tap in to that market segment, and I may follow.
Question though. Is this camera missing anything on the photo side? The only two things I could see where I would want improvement on the original R5 is a better sensor and AF. It delivered there. Outside of more megapixels, where is this camera not photocentric for you?
@@jimbruton9482 I'm sure if you wait a year it will go on rebate. I wouldn't hold my breath about them making a photocentric camera. Even their newer lenses have built in video features. I know they tried a photocentric camera about 10 years ago with the 5DSR, but I just don't see it making financial sense for camera manufacturers. Video pays the bills these days more than photos.
@@KevinDeal You may be correct, but that area (video) is not a priority for me. Prior to the R5, I owned a 5Ds and although I am still pleased getting the R5, I truly miss the 5Ds and the quality of images it took.
Lots of important tech additions to keep the camera competitive and fresh. More bit-depth and better AF are always welcome but like you, I haven't found the old camera exactly lacking in this department. Noise reduction is always welcome, though. Looks like they made some usability improvements in the layout of the top deck, but the buttons on the back are unchanged. Why, oh, why, do they dedicate a button to rate/voice memo??? Does anyone really use that? Hopefully you can assign it to do something else. The limits on button/dial customization reflect Canon's legacy products, and I get it, but I've long wished that they would just let users go crazy and assign whatever they want to any old button. My #1 ask has long been for illuminated buttons so that you can work the camera in the dark. Alas...
I'm so excited for this camera. Preorder made. Just like you I'm excited to start experimenting with this camera and making UA-cam videos about it. IN two seconds ill be a new subscriber. always a pleasure to meet a fellow Canon shooter and UA-camr. If you ever want to colab on an R5mkII video drop me a line.
Very, very tempting if I will find if new r5ii can install picture profiles or luts because I hate really their colour science, that yellow cast in all photos I've seen on UA-cam just makes me want to pass. I really like Fuji colour approach so its difficult decision
Both the R1 and R5ii are great cameras and I’m resisting badly since I don’t need them at all for my current use case. Be good to hear your intial thoughts when you have the R5ii in hand. The pre capture and eye control are things of interest to me and why anyone would shoot in mechanical mode. Did you pick up the EL10 flash?
That improved dynamic range is enough to convince me to upgrade. And may be i will finally to learn to shoot video 😂. It will take me a bit of time to work into my budget with all the other gears I have my eyes on 😅
A stacked sensor and improved AF were the big things I wanted. I got them. But they went beyond my requests on the AF. The facial recognition is excellent. As a portrait photographer, that's going to come in handy.
Hey @KevinDeal! A bit offtopic here but with my R50 I've been dealing with getting out the most of it especialy doing video! The thing is about HDR PQ videos (10bit 4-2-2) and how to use them so I could get the best videos out of this camera. Could you do something about that? I'm not very well informed or educated about it and would be good to learn from you. Thanks alot
One limitation of the R50 is that it doesn't shoot in LOG, so you're limited in post production. It means you have to work that much harder to get it right at the camera. One method I use (and maybe you've already tried this) is exposing to the right. If you don't mind throwing away some of your highlights, you can usually get better results exposing to the right. Just look up "expose to the right in video" on You Tube. That might be a good starting point for video that isn't being shot in LOG. I'm making assumptions here, but that's where I'd start.
@@KevinDeal Thank you Kevin. Yes I've read about ETTR, my main problem have been converting the HDR PQ (H265 to H264) file to use it in Resolve. Thanks again

I have my R5II On Pre-Order… 😎
I'm excited to get mine.

I may get an R3 if they keep going down.
Definitely going to get the mark 2. The R5 has been great, looking forward to moving into the 2020s!

I am keeping my original R5 as a backup. So when I do my R5 MkII review I will look at the files and pixel peep.
I believe they’re making nd filters that clip into the back of the new lenses

How do you find the rf 35mm f1.4?
I’m thinking I’ll keep waiting for a f1.2, but that may never come 😢
@@EverythingCameFromNothing I love it. They've never made a 35 1.2 before. So I wouldn't hold my breath.
