Should We Stop Calling The Fuji GF35-70mm A "Kit Lens"?

Should we stop calling the Fuji GF35-70mm a "Kit Lens"? Is it really fair to call any lens that is optimized to work with a 100MP camera a "Kit Lens"? I spent over two years with the Fuji GF35-70 and used it for both professional and personal work and came to the conclusion that many GFX owners could greatly benefit by adding this lens to the arsenal.....assuming the lens is on rebate. Wirelessly Transmit Video For Less Than $100! Shimbol TP Mini
Couldn’t figure out why I was seeing your videos , then I saw that , somehow, I was subscribed. Must have been drunk. Problem fixed. Good luck with your endeavors.
You also keep on commenting on my videos, which will make the algorithm push them on you regardless of whether or not you subscribe. Happy New Year!
Sorry dude, as soon as you dissed the rocket blower, I turned you off
But not without leaving a comment first.
It would be great for a video of this type except for products that cost only $20 to $40. We’re spending most of our money on film these days.. well, us analog film photographers at least.
I may do a budget video. My medium format film is definitely stupid expensive these days.
How do you rotate the back to get portrait and landscape? Is there a release somewhere?
You just grab the back and rotate it with your hand 90 degrees. No tricks. It's just as as simple as that.
The Cannon R50 was purchased in part to your review. I was looking at this camera as a steppingstone to a full frame but question that philosophy due to the immense capabilities it has. At least it will make a great "B" camera down the road.
R50 is a solid choice and will likely hold you over for quite a while
Nice video. Just got the nano trigger last week and loved it so far. I literally thought about buying everything you reviewed in the past year. Still not sure if I need the 35 1.4 since I’m still pretty happy with 35 1.8. Almost bought the luma camera bag until I realized how many camera bags I already own. Happy new year and looking forward to your videos in 2025.
Happy New Year! Yes, I own a ton of camera bags. I'm embarrassed to admit how many...
do you think that 50 1.4 VCM is better optically than 35 1.4 VCM? I have the old 35mm L EF and i still love it. 85 1.2RF and 70-200RF. was thinking about either replacing the 35mm mark I or get a 50 1.4 (which i never shot, even on DSLR)
I haven't done a head to head shoot out with the two lenses. I haven't seen any reviews that suggest the 50 1.4 is better other than maybe slightly less digital distortion correction. I personally don't care about digital distortion correction, but some people do. I think it really comes down to which focal length you prefer to shoot. I prefer 35 over 50, so my decision was easy.
I think this is the best review of a camera. Straight, fair, and takes NO advantages of other cameras in front of the one who was reviewed!!!...congrats man!!!...R50 is the one for me with 50mm lens, and maybe with rf to ef adaptor, for a Sigma 18-55mm lens.
Thanks. I try to be as fair as possible. The R50 is an amazing camera. Not sure if you know this or not but Sigma dropped a 18-50 2.8 for the RF-S mount. No adapter needed at all.
@@KevinDealthanks!what lenses do u use for lowlight?
What was your favorite piece of camera gear in 2024? What are you looking forward to it 2025? Tell me in the comments!
those black and white portrait shots you captured with the R50 were gorgeous. I've shot with an R50 and it's great all purpose camera. Very thorough and well presented review. Question: do you know if the dual pixel autofocus works in 4k? I saw a few other reviews where it said it switches to contrast detect and is sort of bad.
I don't know the answer to your question about the dual pixel AF vs contrast, but I don't really notice the focus being bad. Thanks for the kind words about my bw shots.
I shoot with the 35-70 lens on a 100s and love it. I use it for both portfolio work and landscapes. I got mine with a used 50s and when I sold the 50s body I kept the lens hence it's net cost was a lot less then $500. My only issue with the lens (or possible user error!) is that is seems a bit soft at shorter distances, i.e. table top product work.
It can be a bit soft in certain situations. I agree. But overall, pretty solid.
Lost me on that crazy ass music
Thanks for stopping by
R6II shooter here with the 28-7mm f/2 as my sole RF lens. Been looking for a lens to supplement it and I believe I found it on your video. Thanks so much!
Happy to help!
With presets I can almost get the same look with my digital. It just doesn't feel the same. I enjoy the experience of film and the particular camera im using. I have 35mm, medium format and large format cameras. I have really been enjoying my plaubel making 67 so much lately. For 120 film I was mainly using a Pentax 67ii from landscape to portrait stuff. But the makina has kinda took its place for small size and since I hardly due people anymore and when I do the makina has a 2.8 aperture if I want that. If money didn't matter it would only be film. But cost makes me keep trying different digital cameras until I eventually find myself back to film lol. I thought about getting another Hasselblad digital, I had the x1dii. But im not sure I want to go that route again. It takes beautiful photos but something isn't the same to me.
Its a different experience, for sure. People who shoot a lot of film understand that. Whether the experience is worth it or is actually "better" is completely in the eye of a photographer. I like film and if I could exclusively shoot it, I would. But yeah, money....
Have people used the Voigtlander 10mm (with an M mount adapter)?
I personally haven't. Have you? If so, how was it?
While I recognize the older 35 f1.4 Fuji is more expensive, in 2024, if you can get one used where would you put it compared to these lenses as a used one will likely come in at a similar cost to this Sigma?
The Fuji (to me) is still my favorite looking 35mm lens for the X mount. It's not perfect and I don't think it's insanely sharp, but it has a lovely character to it. I bought the Sigma because it was good enough and I didn't want to spend more on a Fuji. But if given the opportunity between this new Viltrox and that Sigma, outside of a little studier build quality and the ability to get to f1.4, there's not really a lot pushing me toward the Sigma. If money is no object, get the Fuji. If it is, I'd do the Viltrox. At the end of the day, nobody is likely going to tell a difference between the two without zooming into 400% and doing all kinds of ridiculous tests.
Titles like these are not good for beginners since they think FOMO is valid. People will now go out and dump their cameras while the lens is what matters most. 14k views and only 60 comments? You are either very wary of any critique or you pay for bots. Yes, removing comments, even negative ones, will make you look like you are botting or just not a strong content creator. Strong creators take the bad with the good and they don't bot views.
lol what? If someone dumped their camera because they only read my title but didn’t actually watch my video, that’s their problem. I clearly explained in the video that the R7 was a good camera and I had a specific reason for letting it go. As far as bots are concerned. I don’t know the first thing about even where to start. I have no idea how any of that works and even if I did, I have better stuff to do with my time. I don’t remove negative comments. I’ll prove it by leaving yours.
Very well said! Almost lost me when the gun appeared but I genuinely appreciate the analogy. It’s true photography has got a lot easier in the digital age as we can spray ,pray and edit. There should always be room for both digital and analogue as each has their own merits. To shoot film sparingly is to master the art of the holy triangle of photography and you are so right, as it will definitely make you a better all round photographer, whether for business or just the pure joy of taking a picture. All these recently new UA-camrs with their fancy kit. I would really love to see them try 10 exposure on medium or 36 frames of film as I feel it is all too easy for them to take 1000 images and let the law of averages dictate a good shot.Thank you for the video.
You're welcome. Thank you for sticking it until the end, despite the gun.
Nice! Just bought the Nikon version and will try it out. Might buy the canon version too.
It's an excellent trigger. I wished it worked with my Profoto lights. lol
I have a Canon 1N RS and a Nikon E3 film cameras but my Mamiya C330 with both waist level and prism viewfinder bring me more joy due to the pure mechanical feel and operation of that camera and I'm plan on adding the RB67 to my collection soon. And yes shooting with film help me with maintaining patience and control when I'm using my Canon R system cameras.
RB67 is my favorite film camera. I like it better than my much more expensive Hasselblad.
Lol.had a xbox pal with the Darkslide handle years ago
To me, it looks like Darth Vaders camera.
Had n sold 2 copies of 100to400. Butt he 70to300...images from it is always satisfying.
I agree!
How has shooting on film made you better as a photographer. Tell me about it below!
..sadly you did not talk about focusing....😞
What specifically did you want me to talk about with these manual focus lenses?
@@KevinDeal In the video you can see the small square that is usually the focus point and turns green when the AF hits. If you focus manually, do you do it with focus peaking or do you rely on seeing the right sharpness simply with your eyes? Thanks for the answer BM
@@Blackmind0 I rely on it with my eye. Focus peaking helps, but sometimes it will cause you to front or back focus if you rely on it with non-native lenses.
@@KevinDeal ..thank you 🙂
You get a thumbs up just for the CTruck comment alone. :-)
Happy to throw that dumpster fire under the bus.
Some youtubers "celebrate" with the Z50 ΙΙ 🥳🥳🥳. I am using Nikon and i am wondering where are the Z80 and the Z90 ?
I love Nikon. I don’t own any but have used them. They make a fine camera.
@@KevinDeal I own Nikon D5600,D500,D850 and Z 8 , but I have the impression that Nikon is targeting beginners and specific professionals, and this annoys me a lot.
Thanks for the great video. I’ve shot on many Canon cameras for two decades now, all DSLR cams with mirrors , several EF L lenses, and have finally upgraded to an r5 mk 2, from a 5D mk 3 , huge jump ! I mostly shoot stills , portrait, landscape, event, and occasionally sports . I’m looking forward to so, so many capabilities of this mirrorless pro cam , and also purchased my first RF lens , 28-70 F2 . Also look forward to exploring the video capabilities .
Congrats! Pairing the R5 MKiI with the 28-70 is as good as it gets.
Sorry, I cannot follow you because I already did 😂 what a wonderful camera pleasure to watch
Thanks! Yeah, You Tube only lets you follow once. lol
Great video, Kevin Deal Photography. Looking forward to your next upload! I smashed the thumbs up button on your content. Keep up the fantastic work! Your insights on customizing the R8's buttons were incredibly helpful. How do you think the customization options might evolve in future Canon models to enhance user experience further?
It's hard to say. Canon keeps their cards close to their chest. My guess is with the advancements in autofocus, we may not to have to dedicate as many buttons to control the behavior. Perhaps the AI will fill in some of that for us. Thanks for the support!
Thanks to share! I love it!
You are so welcome! I hope it was helpful!
I just got an R8 and took it with a 50mm lens to Disney World. Being a noob I used Auto the whole time an I think 90% of my pictures turned out great. I'm very happy with the camera and want to invest more time in learning how to use it. I'm still trying to figure out if I should use Lightroom or Capture One (or Lightroom classic?). Actually there's dozens of things I'm not sure of yet, but you got a new subscriber and I'll start looking through your previous videos for more knowledge.
That's awesome! You're in for a treat! Thanks for the subscribe. I personally use Capture One as I feel it gives me more customization for my workflow.
Thx u!!! Have the r8 so definitely will be watching for some of ur vids
Awesome thank you!
🎉🎉
Thanks!
I was hesitating between the 135mm f1.8 and the 70-200 f2.8. But finally, I get the 70-200 for a very good price. Also, I cover sport events, and hike a lot. For versatility, it was the best choice. For portraits, and street photography, I use the 85mm f2, which is great value for money. I subscribe to your channel. Very good photos, and explanations. Thanks a lot.
Truth be told. If I primarily shot events, I would absolutely have the 70-200. I do shoot events, as you saw in the video. But not as much as I shoot portraits. So I can make the 135 work. 85 f2 is incredible for the money. Thanks for the subscription and support!
Could you make a video with your studio setup?
I will add that to my list of videos I want to make this month.
OK - the lens discussion - I understand that people enjoy that, That aside - I would like to see a video of your images and a discussion on each one. Not the lighting or camera stuff but anything else. Your photos are a cut above and it is pleasing to see them - cheers - Bruce
I appreciate it. I feel weird talking about my work. But it's something I need to get over. I'm planning on trying to diversify my format in 2025.
Might pick one of these up and dust off the X pro1.
I'll be that will be a fun pair to put together.
Wondering if I should sell my XF 35mm f/2 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4 to get this Viltrox. Seems like a nice in-between lens. Only thing I'm worried is the light transmission due to the vignetting. Would I get shutter speeds more approximate to the Fujicron at f/2 or the Sigma at f/14.? Would be nice if you could share the RAW files of the comparisons so we could check them in more detail. Please? :D
Honestly, if you already own the other two lenses, you're probably fine. I didn't compare the Viltrox to the Fuji 35 f2, so I can't give you my thoughts on that. As you saw in the video, it was a little sharper than the Sigma, but the Sigma has that extra stop of light.
The XC 35mm F2 is still unbeaten for the money
XC35 is a good lens. I'd love to compare the two.
What's your tip for programming your R8 to make it easier to use out in the field? Tell me about it in the comments.
This is one of the most thorough and entertaining product reviews of a lens that I have ever seen. Excellent work.
Thanks! Honestly, I have to give Viltrox credit for letting me spend a lot of time with the lens. Often times companies want me to turn a review around in a couple weeks. I got three months with it, which I think contributed to the quality of my review. I like it when vendors don't rush me.
It's a very good lens, especially i got it for the equivalent of $124 USD . It's definitely a no-brainer. I also love my Viltrox 13mm 1.4 . Even more than my Fuji 23mm 1.4. Never expected this ! 😮
35 1.7 drops in 48 hours
I’m considering swapping my eos 77d for the R50 would you say this is an upgrade or not..? Great video btw 👍
If you rely on autofocus, definitely.
Pelicans are the best
I guess I wasn't aware that they made bags. I have one of their cases but I don't ever take it out in public. I always feel like a Pelican case is a way of saying "rob me. I have a bunch of expensive equipment." That being said, they sure do an amazing job of protecting my equipment.
I ordered this camera just now after after watching this video!! Definitely a life a long subscriber now ❤ I usually take wide landscapes - mountains and valleys! Kindly advise, what lens shall I get with this?
It all comes down to your budget, but the 24-105 f/4 is probably your best bet to start with. Thank you for the sub!!
Bought this lens at full price on the same day as my Xpro-2 and it has barely left my camera since. A criminally underrated lens IMO, ESPECIALLY at second hand prices. Would love a speed update with WR though!
Love mine for sure, especially at my second hand price that I got it for.
Great review. Looking for a new camera. Torn between this and the Sony A6700. I already own some L lenses but open for a new platform
Both are great cameras. Ultimately it's about what works for you. I personally could never get along with Sony color science. Thanks!
What do you think about the Nomatic Luma 18L McKinnon? Did you go with something else instead? Tell me about it below.
Thanks for clearly explaining everything!
You're welcome!
Very suitable for the new compact camera like XM5
I completely agree.
