Scariest video on youtube. I mean I talk about gear with my partner but I don't actually think she realizes the amount of money that goes into this stuff 😂.
@@PhotographyWithAntonio I think you should have also told her how much money that gear has brought to you, in the case you did earn more then you payed for them,

As awkward and hilarious as this was, I think I’ll take away something really important from this video as well…. Overall an amazing video - educational and cringey! 😂👍
Yes, I was going to say that to the uninitiated the prices sound ridiculous; it’s almost impossible to guess prices accurately without a frame of reference. And when a client thinks you’re overcharging them when you quote them for a job this is often why.
Well first of all congratulations on your wife. ^^ Also a nice model I guess. I also have that dust rocket. Had to buy a new camera and lenses, cause I lost my good old 50D in Ireland last year. Went to Sony full frame mirrorless, love the shots, hate the camera design.
Well I don't know if I'd be happy ("Wow, she's a supportive keeper!") or slightly offended ("It's the person behind the camera that takes the photo") ahah
She’s not far off guessing larger and heavier as more expensive. Physics comes into play. Longer lenses are larger and heavier which is expensive. Large aperture is larger and heavier than their slower counterparts, and also pricey.
Aussies also cop what's called the "Australia Tax" by Manufacturers, where the price charged isn't the same after exchange rates and sales taxes, but about another 30% on top. Apple, Canon, Samsung and Nikon are all pretty savage on it.
You're a brave man! 😅Please share a follow up with how your relationship is going after the reveal. You are a lovely couple. My beautiful wife knows I spend a lot on equipment, but I don't want to discuss the topic too much.
I paid £325 for my camera £350 for the lens. They retailed for 2000 and 1500 back in the day. Buy used SLRs. It’s shocking what good glass you can get for cheap these days
Photography cost me 50.000 € the past 20 years. Swapping cameras or lenses for newer ones. Courses, fairs, flashes, tripods, harddisks, computer, lightroom, photoshop etc ... Luckily I'm single :-). And if I were not single, I pay it from my own money, so there is no problem.
Enjoyed the video. Pretty bold to discuss equipment costs all in one setting. But to demonstrate real bravery you should do another video where she adds together all your camera gear on a calculator so she sees the grand total. Then have her compare that number to all your furniture, or jewelry, or her clothing, or her car. I’d like to see that video… yes, please! :)
Damn right man, what were you thinking? I once told my wife I was buying a new lens and that it may be expensive. She said OK. But when she saw the CC bill she said "I thought you were buying a new lens, not a new car." Well, I needed something to haul it around in.
I like her eyes go over it and over it and looking at all the stuff you could have had together. That nicer car, bigger house, less mortgage. But you, my friend are a very courageous man! And I hope you have all the gear you need because there might be many ‘NOs’ from now on 🤣. It is scary how much we spend on that hobby; put it into perspective. I mean I tend to forget how much I spent!
I mean thats not really true though. He is a working full time professional, not a hobbyist. This equipment is what enables him to earn a living and pay for anything, its just a cost of doing business and every item is a tax write-off. And really its not super expensive in the great big scheme of things, imagine if he was a mechanic with a shop full of tools, lifts, etc. Individual items with photography are expensive for sure, but you don't need that many of them. Now, if he was just a hobbyist I could see her prepping the skewer for his balls about now. ;)
@@ryancooper3629 that is true. But the look on her face though towards the end 😂 and still, even as a professional. The amount we spend on gear is insane, once we add it all up. Of course we do not buy the whole set at once, but the final amount always gets me!
@@FabienMathey My point is it really isn't. This is the majority of his pro kit and what is the total? $40k? $50k? (too lazy to add it up) For a service professional that's peanuts. A mechanic will spend 2-3x that on his set up. Its expensive for a hobbyist, but from the perspective of a professional service provider its actually a really cheap entry. Especially considering there is no real estate requirement such as paying rent or mortgage on a facility. Especially when you consider that nothing on that table is critical to starting a career as a wedding photographer. He could be very successful with lenses that cost half as much, across the board. That 85 1.2 is an amazing lens, but so is the 85 1.8, for example.
@@ryancooper3629 i know that. But 40k is still a lot of money, even if you can pay it off easily if you’re getting booked regularly. Also, it depends on the country. In Australia, this might be easy, but in other countries, even for the seasoned professional, this is not always possible to pay off in time. What I want to say is that as a non-photographer, the final number just brings chills. Looking at the number with no business in mind. I know that if you have a business, you need to invest in an office (even if it is in your house), a computer and then the cameras, lenses, flashes, batteries, cards, insurance, etc. And even if, with your business plan, you are able to pay it back, just looking at the summed-up amount in the end makes it a huge number. And of course you can write off certain things on taxes. I also know for staring in wedding photography, you do jot need 40k. You can get by with a camera and a couple of lenses for less than 10k and can charge maybe 1000-2000 a wedding in Australia after you have a couple in your portfolio. Then it will pay itself back quickly. The more you shoot, the more you charge and the faster you can pay off. But again, depends on the country.
I have astrophotography equipment that's worth about 30 to 35k (USD).. I won't even discuss pricing at home, as it makes no sense to talk about it. Especially when I am maybe able to use it once or twice a year (if even) due to bad weather and how far high up north I live (hardly any astronomical darkness in the summer months) and usually having to get up for work in the morning and not having a permanent setup.
Brave man! There were a couple of moments when you revealed a price that I was waiting for a thought bubble to appear over her head with a "processing" gif in it! 🤣

This is fun to watch. And not that surprising, really. I've been in cameras for a long time now, and I still can't believe how much it all costs sometimes. The average person has no idea. Like, when something so small as a camera body can be worth as much as someone's car... it doesn't compute.

its funny because cameras and lenses cost a lot but someone not into photography they cant comprehend the cost. but they are reallt willing to spend thousands a year on hair and makeup and fake eye lashes etc etc and not even think about it. best thing about photography is the resale value over fake eye lashes and other stuff women spend money on (subscribed)

You both getting up and walking quietly in different directions... LOL. I have this same thing with telescope equipment. I know exactly what my wife would say: Now I get to spend the same money on whatever I want!
Damn prices went up since I bought my stuff in the D4/D810 era. Like the 70-200mm f2.8G II was around $2700 in Sydney back then. 14 years ago though. Z mount version $4,100 eesh Only reason I would want to upgrade from the D810 though is for the waaaay better video capabilities of Z8/Z9. In which case I think using the G->Z mount adapter would make way more sense than trying to rebuy all my glass.
Don't know how this popped up on my UA-cam feed BUT I love it. The funniest thing you said is at the end..."see you in the next one"...there won't be a next one! 🤣🤣🤣
A very quick search shows that the average yearly income in Australia is a little over 92k. In the US its a bit under 60k. So the salary in AUS is 1.53x from a strictly numerical perspective. The exchange rate is 1.52 AUD to 1.00 USD. B&H is showing the 85/1.2 at 2796 USD, which is 4249.92 AUD. Even after a 10% tax, it seems like the AUS prices are a bit higher than their US equivalent.
You should have added up the total at the end for the for maximum shock value! This was very entertaining! I could never do this with my wife. She would probably faint after we got above $2K USD.
For not knowing anything to start out, I thought she lined them up pretty well. Heavier and taller was a great starting point for lenses. You need to add some vintage glass in there to really throw her off 🙂
🙆 I think after hearing the price of each gear, she was like "when did he buy this? What did I want and didn't get around that same timeline?"... 😅 Brave man, good luck on your future purchases!
My wife and I share expenses, bank accounts, everything. Well, we're married, so... I never spend any serious money (i.e., three figures) without letting her know and getting her input. She does the same with me. She doesn't begrudge my photo stuff (which admittedly is less than most photogs) nor my astronomy stuff (which is worth more at this point). I don't begrudge what she spends. But we're both aware, since it's OUR money -- Not mine, nor hers.
Good test for your marriage - long terms. If she sticks around after this - you have found the one. My wife when I say I want to buy new lens/camera/3d printer - "go for it". BTW Australian dollars are weird! :).

Never use the two expressions "This was $4100" and "I don't use it too much, it's a bit heavy" in front of your wife. These things get remembered!
Noted
You are a god amongst men...or you have huge cahonas dude.
We all wish you luck in your future purchases...
for a guy with 2k, you surely made this video fun to watch, quality over quantity rn, gj
Z mount version $4,100 eesh
Only reason I would want to upgrade from the D810 though is for the waaaay better video capabilities of Z8/Z9. In which case I think using the G->Z mount adapter would make way more sense than trying to rebuy all my glass.
The best what's in my bag ever.
Ausis know Boomerangs. This Video will boomerang pretty hard.
I would have been killed by the second lens price by my wife! Samantha took it pretty well.
Man, Aus is messing you up with the pricing. The Z6II in America right now cost $1600 USD about $2400 AUD
Brave man, good luck on your future purchases!
Very entertaining. The next time you want to add a new lens or camera I’d like to see a video of you trying to justify the purchase to her!!!
Same here and that works fine.
Wind... did he hold on to his soon to be ex wife? Nope 😂
Well... GL With your future endeavours I guess!
Good test for your marriage - long terms. If she sticks around after this - you have found the one. My wife when I say I want to buy new lens/camera/3d printer - "go for it". BTW Australian dollars are weird! :).
I am much more vague about the cost of camera gear :) I hope you bought some, if not all of that gear during sales! That's my recommendation to anyone.
i really felt it when she put the little zipper case all the way to her left
i don't think i'm ever really going to recover.
This is great lol. Easily one of the most entertaining and a nice break from the usual photography gear videos. Did you have to sleep on the couch for awhile? 😃Wish I had thought of this! Oh wait, I dont have a wife 🥲
This was fun! People have no idea how much gear costs!
The biggest fear of people with a passion = Telling your family the actual price of the gear 😅
You're a brave soul. Meanwhile I'm taking the expenses of my running shoes to the grave lol.
