What I learned from my last quilt ... start in the center and work towards the edges. It’s much easier to scrunch unquilted layers into the harp space than quilted (and stiffer) layers. Make a quilting plan. Maybe start in center and work in quadrants.
I had my grandmother's Singer from the 1940s and it was heavy as heck. But the thing ran for decades. My mom had it for a long time, and then I had it, and used it, for a couple of decades also. Nana used to make quilts on it that are still within the family to this day. I've decided recently to take up the art and bought a new heavy-duty Singer. I'm amazed how it's so light and plastic. The foot pedal bothers me - the old ones are heavy and stay put. But I'm getting used to it and am enjoying the journey. Thank you Angela for the instructions - but mostly the confidence. You're brilliant!
Thanks so much!! For teaching me it’s ok to have a mistake but make it again and it is a design choice!! This has come in handy!! I love all your time you give to us to help us become the most we can be!!! Thanks for making me laugh! You are my kind person! Best wishes!
Thank you Angela. I Love the tips because I have so much panic when it comes to a large quilt. Now I can quilt without worry about the whole quilt at once. You are the bomb.
You make quilting look so easy. Your videos definitely give newbies like me hope and the confidence needed to make a beautiful quilt. Thanks for your videos.
Love this video,,thank-you for sharing your talents
Love the quilt, the quilting and the gal you are gifting the quilt to....so deserving.
That quilt is amazing! I love the desing and colours :D
You are just to funny, and quite talented. Thank you 😊
I love this video. I actually made my husband hold the quilt up as I quilted so it wouldn't catch on my table. Lol.
Put the ironing board next to your sewing table. An ironing board is perfect for this because you can adjust its height to fit the height of your sewing table or cabinet and it is something everyone owns. It will give you considerably more real estate for your quilt to lay flat.
Oh my goodness watching this video and commenting about gravity gave me an idea for temporary fix when I need to have extra space around sewing machine table when pulling sewing table away from the wall and also a way to store it
I GUESS THAT'S WHAT AN AHA MOMENT IS LOL you just made my day and thanks for quilting tips 😊
Happy dance over here haha
I bought this kit. Love it. I haven't started it yet because I am working on one of your other patterns right now. I am so glad you put these tips in your video. The weight alone can at times be a struggle to deal with. I enjoy your videos . I always learn something new. Your sense of humor brightens my day.
Hello
Judy
I really like these tips for quilting. Very helpful, thank you.
I love watching videos to see that quilting a large quilt on a regular machine is possible, but whenever I try it, I end up with potty mouth! I have "graduated" to the point where I can do a decent-sized lap throw, as long as I'm only stippling. Baby steps!
I'm the same way.
There are Bluprint classes on how to quilt big quilts on small machines. The best thing I've learned is how to add the batting in two or three sections. It is amazing how much easier this makes it. My machine only has a 8.25 throat space, and it works great using that method.
Just what I needed to see before quilting my almost done queen size star quilt. Thanks!
You really make that look easy. Thank you
What model is your machine? I'm looking to upgrade to one with the deeper throat without having to get a longarm.
Great tip.
Very helpful!
INFORMATIVE CONTENT
We're so glad you enjoyed it!
I love using wavy lines- I use them a lot for t-shirt quilts.
Can you do a tutorial on how you sandwich your quilts? I notice you dont have a lot of safety pins everywhere
Kathy Shoemaker she uses fusible batting
@@mylilbirdiecreations what is fuseable batting
Kathy Shoemaker it’s a batting that has a type of glue on it and you iron your layers together and they fuse together. Angela has a video on it. ua-cam.com/video/q3IZmFMIfd8/v-deo.html
You can also get basting glue. This way you probably spend less money because you can just buy normal batting and the glue can last for many many quilts. The basting glue is in a spray can and you just spray it between the layers to keep them together. This is what I've used for my quilts I've made and you just put them in the washer once you're done to get the glue off.
My main struggle is that even on a large table, I can’t seem to move the quilt around smoothly enough to try more intricate free motion, especially with a big and heavy one. I have given up on the idea of anything other than grids, random swirls or long wavy lines until the day of owning a long arm 😁
I agree Nina...I cannot move mine either andit's frustrating. Then after I quilted yesterday and thought I was doing great, the backside was looping....I adjusted and adjusted tension and to no avail....I have to take it all apart now and like you said....just grids.....first I have to adjust my tension to make sure it's ok on the back...
P.S… I love this channel 💕
Thanks a lot! 🌸🌸
I've just ordered what for je is HUGE - 45 x 45 panel. I do doll quilts. And don't plan to do much more - and doll quilts have their own problems, very small areas and spaces. Any special hints or tips for that? (OH yea, have Elvira since 2" things R me). Design planning is so different in a combined space of under 24 x 24.
Hi,
What machine do you use for the quilting?
Regards, fiona.
Yes! That harp space looks impressive.🤓
Gotta know @Craftsy, did she LOVE her quilt!?
I watch and watch these videos and I still don't understand how you move from one section of the quilt to the other and how do you get add new thread-like start-and-stop because I'm sure I would run out of bobbin
hello 😋🖐
i always watch your videos 🤗
😃😃👍👍 I like your work
What sewing machine are you using? It doesn't seem to struggle as you quilt.
I am new to sewing, so where you first start quilting on a quilt do you start in the middle or do you start on the sides?
Start in the middle
What are those gloves called and where can I get some please
Hi what sewing machine are you yousing for quilt? Thank you
Looking for a new sewing machine
Heya, what machine do you use?
Gravity is the enemy is so many areas of my life... >:(
Amen to that
SmittenKitten you really do have the best comments on her videos
That's the reason, I find stich in the ditch way easier
What gloves are you wearing. I have yet to find any with great grip for large quilting
How do you secure your beginning and ending...stitch in place, backstitch??
how do u put the quilt together with badding and the back of the quilt.
Your fabric looks so fluid. Is it just cotton quilting fabric?
Our "small" sewing machines are much smaller in Scotland! The throat is much smaller than your machine!
Yeah I consider that one of the larger home machines. My mom has one of a similar size and I have one an out 2/3s that size. I am going to use my machine for thread painting this semester but next quilt I finish I will likely use mom’s machine to quilt, I think mine is just too small
love your gloves, where can i buy it?
What sewing machine do you use! I need to upgrade the throat on mine is 4 inches I have a hard time piecing anything bigger than a twin
What kind of machine did you use?
What type of foot are you using?
How long are your strips for the stash buster quilt I know they are 2.5 inches wide but how long
I need help... I am making my first quilt.. I got it all to quilt... I have a xl2600i brother sewing machine. Which has done well so far.. just want to know of there is a better sewing machine out there, that doesnt cost that much. That is maybe one step above for quilting.. I feel that is the best part, and it just makes a quilt stand out.. please help... or maybe tips on using this one to free motion quilt.. I mean u can not lower the feed dogs and when I put the little plastic thingy over them. It makes it to wear it is hard to fit the quilt in.. idk. Maybe It is possible to do this on this sewing machine.. I have already bought alot of fabrics to make more.. ot is so much fun.. and I'm already addicted to the sound and what u can do with the fabric.. sorry if I am rambling, I get excited..
I'm a beginner and working on my first quilt. How do you know how fast to move the quilt around .
I find that I hold my breath when I free motion quilting. Does this go away after time?
So do you bast spray your quilts or pin it?
Dear Angela, I’m in need of professional help. I’m struggling with ruler foot quilting. I can’t find a ruler foot attachment that will work with my machine. The fabric will not move under the foot. Especially if there is any kind of seam involved. But I remember you switching to a “more dynamic” ruler foot in one of your videos and now I can’t find the video. Which foot were you using!!!????? Please help!!!
Brand new quilter here. What kind of foot are you using there?
Hello Gena,
Great question! Please use the link below to submit your questions to our experts: www.craftsy.com/contact
What kind of foot you for that I would love to know
You don't mention in the video where you should start quilting on a quilt - top, edge, centre? Thanks.
Great question! We have passed your question along to our experts. Please watch this space for their response. Responses typically take 1-2 business days. Thanks!
Hello!
Where to begin the machine quilting on a project, at least in part, depends on how you plan to quilt it.
If doing an overall free-motion design, after sandwiching and stabilizing (basting) the layers, you might begin at the upper left side and move all the way across in a “row fashion” or begin at the upper right corner area and progress all the way down to the bottom edge in a “column fashion”. If doing a meander / stipple, sometimes I’ve found it easier to begin in the center area of the quilt sandwich and move outward in a wedge-shaped trajectory.
If your quilt top has blocks separated by sashing, you may want to begin by stabilizing the entire quilt sandwich by doing straight-line machine quilting using a walking foot or dual-feed mechanism, stitching in all the ditches. Then you can do a free-motion motif design within the area of each block.
There are many machine quilting options and approaches available. In addition to this class, there are a variety of machine quilting classes on the Craftsy platform to provide you with more information and ideas.
Best wishes!
Kelly
@@CraftsyUA-cam thanks
Where do you get your gloves? Do you use supreme slider under the quilt? Thankyou
Curious minds want to know... who makes those gloves and where can I get them!! Please... and thank you

What kind of machine is that
Girl, you are so excellent at running that machine over that quilt, I’m scared to even try. In other words... YOU MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY but it’s not. :( But I suppose practice makes better, right?
Way advanced for me...
What is blue print? Some new pay for it web APP?
Where can I get those gloves?
You can find those here: quiltingismytherapy.com/product/machine-quilting-gloves/
Which machine r u using?
Back of the machine says it is a handi quilter. It is a Janome probably 8900
@@johnm6972 thank u John do u know same kind of machine available in some other brand?
@@nishittshah9012 I would go to a dealer of sewing machines nearest to you and ask for a machine that does free motion quilting. If your budget doesn't allow you to spend $1000-$5000 then try a singer patch work with a spring loaded darning foot.
@@johnm6972 Thank u John...that was really helpful
You only gave 2 tips in the video! Was the last tip about gravity?
Hello Maria
Where is Angela Walters miss her on blueprint
Mashen pirs
LOL it has to be her daughter... not sure but i have that feeling lol
Why do you wear gloves?
the gloves have grippy bits on the bottom which make it easier to move the fabric as you sew it! :-)
