Learn how to get rid of scar tissue with scar tissue mobilization. Any time you have a surgery or injury, the area scars up. Scar tissue is great for healing, but then it has nowhere to go and can cause problems in the long run. Make sure to talk with your doctor or PT before doing this because you want the incision or injury site to be completely healed before you start.
To help break up the scar tissue, you can start with “warming up” the tissue in the area first. You can use a massage cream or lotion, but you don’t have to. Start off by pushing very lightly and make small circles directly over the scar. Then you can go up and down and side to side. Once you have done that about a minute, you can start pushing harder. This might be painful now, and you might feel some pops underneath. That is the scar tissue breaking up. It is normal and necessary.
Now you can actually take the top layer of skin and start twisting it up and down, side to side, and in circles. You are just trying to move that top layer around to break up the scar tissue from the layer below. Try doing this 3-5 minutes 1-2 times a day.

Doctor Jo i have a scar on my eyebrow. i've had it for 1 year now and i wonder, even if the scar fades away will there ever grow hair back?

I had a tibial plateau fracture with compartment syndrome. It took 3 surgeries and 2 weeks in the hosp. When released it took 6 months to get to a cane. Now 1 1/2 years later i still cannot bend my knee. My leg swells in 3 hrs and locks up. Can scar tissue prevent me from bending my leg? I can bend about 70degrees first thing in the morning . I havent had therapy except after surgery. This is because i am poor and cant miss anymore work for therapy. I almost lost my house and went 6 months with no water. I am getting better financially so i will be able to go to therapy in a couple weeks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Doctor joe so my foot pain went away i thought it was a serious injury but no i feel much better i went back to running on Sunday but I've been feeling tense on the neck shoulders and arms when running now i know that is due to poor posture so do you have a video on back strengthening ? It is more likely scar tissue depending on how much rehab you did for your tendonitis. Do you stretch your ankle/calf/achilles tendon?
I would check in with a doctor to make sure orthotics would help.
What about the scar tissue on my rotator cuff? How can I break that up or heal that? The pain never completely goes away. Everytime I do weight lifting exercises involving my shoulder the scar tissue ruptures, and the cycle starts over again. Inflammation, scar tissue, inflammation, scar tissue. Any advice? thank you.

I've been told that there is possible tendon adhesion. I got cut and stitched on back of my palm, index finger (knuckle) and wound was already closed, however, i cannot bend my finger to the fullest like doing a fist and it is a bit swolen. Had my ultrasound this afternoon and i'm scared for the result as i don't want to get a surgery or cut again just to fix the possible tendon adhesion. I find ur video and so thankful that tjere is a hope , possible i can just lift the skin and massage the affected area. I,'m so afraid to touch it after the cut had been closed but after worrying that another surgery would happen, i tried moving it as mom told me to stretch and bend my finger and do exercises, and ur video of massage is so perfect. I pray that everything will be ok not only for me but to all who just like me is suffering and recovering. Bless ur channel.

@AskDoctorJo I'm having the same problem with my right pinky finger. It was fractured, the Dr. put a plate in it and afterwards I haven't been able to bend it. The Dr. said it's bc of scar tissue. Do you think this will work?

Hello, could you tell me how long it took for you to feel 100% after your surgery? I am on my week 6 and still can't make a fist, can't bend my wrist or hold a mug. My fingers are sore. I thought this surgery was going to be way easier to recover from.

@@rosagroen2964 my surgery was on September. I am on my 6th month and even though my hand is way better, still is not 100%. If I just knew this, believe me I wouldn't do it. I'd rather keep my ganglion cyst but I also know everyone is different. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't the best. Hope you feel better soon

8 month later and the bottom half of my inner left leg scar from my surgery is still tender and preventing me from going down stairs freely. Two therapists are currently working on breaking up the scar tissue but it's just painful and doesn't seem to be doing much.

Some things help like cold laser, and as a last resort, there are injections that help, but those would be something you need to discuss with your surgeon. Good luck.

You’re welcome. It really just depends on how long ago your injury was and how much scar tissue formed.
I literally got a scar from a ingrown hair after it was taken out . It’s a small spot but now it’s a little bumpy and I hate that my skin darkens so easily naturally one feels bumpy others don’t but still it’s so annoying to half when I get a scar and the belly area is not a pretty thing gonna try this

I had a surgery about seven years ago to remove a brain tumor resulting in an 11 inch scar running from temple to temple, and a smaller atrophic scar running across my forehead. The smaller scar on my forehead is about 3 inches long ending in a concaved quarter sized “crater“. I’ve been rubbing ScarAway cream on my scar every day for about three weeks now and the crater is slowly starting to fill in, and the remaining atrophic scar is starting to smooth out. My question is how do you reduce the redness of the scar? The huge 11 inch scar running across my forehead is the same color as my skin tone, so it doesn’t bother me… but the smaller atrophic scar on my forehead is slightly red (which bothers me.)
Will this work on a quad tendon I partially tore 2 years ago? I did some massage at the beginning when I had pain, and have been stretching and gradually building up my ability to hike and jog, but that knee still responds differently after exercise. It feels bulky compared to my other one.

I was looking for advice and found your video and I'm so thankful.
I had a nasty fall when I hooked my foot on a wooden board and went down like a dropped log hitting my face between my eyes and eyebrows on the door ledge.
The nurse who removed my stitches said that I must leave it open and do salt rinses.
An ugly scab formed and t'was quite hard. I decided to cover it again and it healed better.
Because of where the injury is, its awkward to keep it dressed so keeping it open and applying arnica oil and gently rubbing to try and smoothen it. The oil softened the scab so i pulled it off last night. It looks and feels like a big blister and 2 little ones as well. The skin tore differently so have what I'd say is a patterned scar.
I just held a hot water bottle on it and massaged the wound and applied some pressure. I could feel scar tissue moving.
So I was on the right track and this video just confirmed that I I had the right idea only because I was trying to do my own thing🙈.

No, I don't think it will.
Put a screw in the pad of my finger and after it healed completely I had a puffed up, highly sensitive scar in the worst of places compromising my grip strength in my left hand. (I can hold my weight up for 20-30 seconds right hand only but can’t even take my feet off the ground left handed from the pain in my finger)
Using Doctor Jo’s method for about 1-1/2 months I can now barely feel the scar at all and it’s completely invisible to the eye! I truly can’t believe the difference this technique has made in such a short time. Thanks Doctor Jo!
Would this work on upper eyelid retraction as a result of scar tissue built up from inflammation from thyroid eye disease. Thyroid eye disease in no longer active but the scar tissue still there making the eyelid retracted

I have scar tissue from an old hemorrhoidectomy and then a flap procedure and minimal sphincterotomy a year later. How can I break up that scar tissue?
Since it's been so long, going to see a physical therapist who specializes in the pelvic floor would be the best option.
AskDoctorJo would certain supplements like proteolytic enzymes, DMSO or vitamin E help dissolve internal scar tissue? How about cold laser therapy or ultrasound on the area? Thanks.
Unfortunately, I don't know since I can't evaluate you. If your doctor is recommending those, it might be worth trying.
Is it safe to do this on the scar tissue from donating plasma? I've been using vitamin e oil and rubbing all directions. I'm curious about being more aggressive like you show at the end
It kind of depends on how long ago you donated, and if you are cleared by your doctor to do so. Unfortunately, I don't know since I can't evaluate you.

Hi. My PT told me to do it dry using a blue friction silicon sheet and going in circles over it. Going over the area where my finger fracture was. Is there a difference b/n going dry or lotioned?

I think it's working! Been trying this most days for about two weeks now, I feel like I can already see a difference (might just be a placebo effect). I feel like my scar is getting less textured. (My scar is a surgical scar from two years ago.) Hope that helps someone :)
Edit more than a month in: I feel like it is continuing to help! I tend to do it right before bed, and I try to do it as close to once a day as I remember, but it's usually more like once every 3 days.

I wish you were my PT! I learned so much more from your video than from my session with my PT who seems to not know so much about scars. I got a diagonal laceration 3 months ago from the middle of my eyebrow down to the edge of my eyelid. So much scar tissue underneath still that my eye looks a bit swollen. Can't wait for it to go away.

hey doctor jo, i recently got hit in the lip by a baseball and my lip spit from the inside, my inner lip was hanging out of my mouth, i had it stitched
up and it has healed. the laceration didn’t go outside of my mouth. now that it has healed it feels like lump. it looks swollen but it isn’t, it’s just the scar tissue inside of my lip, do you have any tips to reduce the large bump of scar tissue? it makes me super self conscious. Thank you!

I dislocated my shoulder 17 years ago and now I finally discovered the muscle that has never rehabilitated: my right infraspinatus. Finally I am doing external rotation the proper way, not letting my posterior deltoid to dominate. Most likely I have scar tissue there? How would I go about breaking that up?
Stretches and exercises should help break it up. If not, it might be worth talking with your doctor about an injection that might help break it up.
Hi dear.. Once I had a, fight with my sister and unintentionally I scratched my sisters hand with my nails, and my nails are very sharp, that scratch turns into deep long scratch.. I broke a rib years ago and now have scar tissue at my rib cage, towards my back. Is it possible to work the scar tissue in that location? I can't reach it. I use to run a couple marathons a year but, since the injury, I've not been able to run long distance. Thanks in advance for any advice!
It's possible. Usually you can change scar tissue for up to two years, but it gets harder the longer it is. Maybe some breathing exercises will help. I have several. You can find them all at: ua-cam.com/users/askdoctorjo

It can possibly help up to two years, but probably not much after that. Probably worth trying for awhile.
My ortophedi surgeon said i have scar tissue inside the skin after trigger finger surgery.

I have scar tissue that has a soft area... it feels as if when u press it , it could pop underneath. It’s very squishy... any idea what it could be ?
i have that as well, i was attacked by a pittbull and lost full feeling in the top of my ring finger. the “squishy” area is where i lost feeling. it’s mostly fatty tissue, where the muscle or meat of your injury (in my case the finger) was lost. talk to a doctor about it, as i’m not at all qualified to tell you for sure. if it feels fragile, and you’re worried about popping it or reopening the injury, talk to your doctor or a surgeon immediately.
