Thanks! I enjoy all of your videos. Please address Azelaic Acid next time! I heard that it's a great ingredient by virtue of its anti-acne properties and low side effects.
I was prescribed clindamycin phosphate gel to treat my HS and it does indeed help with inflammation, and bacterial infection. I was prescribed it alone with no other antibiotic or anti-inflammatory creams, but so far, so good. I have been on it for about 4 months. If I take it at the very first sign of an outbreak, it typically heals in a couple of days, and I take it a few more days, for about a week, to be completely sure. 10/10 would recommend for stage 1 & 2 of HS. It also stops the 'remote' itching (itching near my elbow when the outbreak is in my pit), and the tacky feeling between showers during a flare up. Although my onset began in my late teens, I had been to a number of doctors who called it this or that, but was not properly disagnosed until I was in my late 40's without ever having received a recommendation to see a dermatologist. I am very greatful for the work you do, your entire field, as the prescribing doctor did not explain any of this and I learned so much from you. Imagine living with this for over 25 years without being properly diagnosed or medicated?! On my next doctor's visit, I will be sure to ask about the combinations you have suggest and other topical treatments. Thank you for making this video.
Oh I remember Clindamyacin from my teenage years. An old favourite. Meanwhile I am watching you in the dark, Toronto has gone black because of a raging windstorm that I thought would knock out my windows. No lights anywhere in my ‘hood. Therefore I had ice cream for supper. Shame to let it go to waste!
Do you take insurance? LOL because how come I can't get this same info when I ask my own derm about this. I had a script for clind.. and it stopped working and I couldn't get any explanation. No explanation on how long I should use it for, didn't discuss the risk of long-term use and the average person doesn't know the right questions to ask. :(

Thank you for another helpful video 💕 I'm writing a research paper purely for fun on hormonal acne so I can better understand how to take care of myself, and your videos are a valuable tool. Helping patients understand what's happening also goes a long way in building trust with their doctors!
I used to use Benzaclin, and it was definitely helpful. However I found that it began not to work as effectively after about a year of use. However, since you say it is anti inflammatory, I think i may get a refill of my prescription. Maybe it can help reduce the scarring a bit from a cyst. As always, thank you for such great videos. You are helping so many people.
I went to my dermatologist she prescribed me 3 different medications for my acne didn’t explain much about it but I knew were to find answers and tips as to how to apply my meds 😊 Thanks Dr Dray.
Seems to be a huge problem with dermatologists just throwing treatments at you with zero concern and no explanation, they worry more about the next appointment then anything you have to say. We have to come to UA-cam to find derms who care.
This is a fantastic video thank you so much for putting this together very clear and very well paced with giving enough high level with low level context
Dr Dray, can you do a Q&A on Azelaic Acid? Would love to know more about it. Always feel that it has its own useful role in helping with acne and other skin problems but not as popularly discussed as benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin, AHA and BHA. Thank you! 😊
You've probably heard this a thousand times before. Still, thank you very much for all the helpful and science-based information. I'm "guilty" of using Skinceuticals' L-ascorbic :P , which has been the only single thing that can fade my PIH; however, if you ever decide to establish your own clinic, brand or even cult, considered me signed up! The Cerave BP cleanser is very gentle! I love their formulated. Im about to start the Apostrophe Tretinoin/Clindamycin/Spiranolactone topical treatment in conjunction with BP. Really hoping this combo clears me up
Candice Farinde I wouldn’t because its an acid and many people give bootleg products. Plus u need to start with the right dosage otherwise u could do serious damage to your skin.
Aaliyah Bustamante Hi i’m just started using clindamycin and tretinoin! the creams dry my skin out and i was wondering if you can put a lotion on top of any of them. i don’t know if you will see this or not but thank you!
I just came across your channel and I love your videos! They are so informative! I wish I was one of your patients, I didnt have the best experience with my last dermatologist and I've been through so many different routines I'm trying to find out what's really best for my skin. Im so happy to have another doctors point of view! :) Thank you :)
Dr. Dray--I would love your thoughts on anti-perspirant+acne. I had constant, disfiguring, and painful cystic acne from ages 12-28. I tried everything at the time except Accutane. I stopped using deodorant/antiperspirant and my active acne resolved in a few days. My skin is nearly perfect now. I can't find any research on this, but I think there is potential there. I know you've said that anti-perspirant should be used at night and then washed off, but I think when I was using it was rubbing onto my sheets and then my face. I also want to thank you for recommending hyaluronic acid--I think it's making a difference in my post-inflammatory erythema (it really clicked in one of your videos when you talked about the lubricating the cells to move over one another for healing). Thanks for your videos, Dr. Dray, it makes a difference that you care and are helping people treat acne strategically.
That is fascinating. I’m over 50 and I have had a problem with cystic acne under arms and groin area. I have been on doxycycline for >30 years. I have noticed that when I don’t wear deodorant it gets worse. I am the exact opposite of you. I discovered this once I started working from home and would forget to put on deodorant for a few days and then I didn’t want to put some on while things were active. It’s wild how different we all are.
Wow, as someone with bad cystic acne (at age 25, since teens) I really wonder about this. I always find it hard to remove my antiperspirant completely and find that I can often feel it on my hands even after washing them multiple times. I did stop using antiperspirant for a few years to try "natural" deodorants. Around the same age I had a pretty significant improvement in my acne for quite a while... I know my acne is primarily hormonal in nature since I was just diagnosed with PCOS but your comment really has me wondering if there is any link. By no means do I think my anecdote proves anything, but like Dr. Dray said it would be awesome if you tried to get some studies in motion!
A pharmacist was just suggesting I use this over differin because it’s covered but differin is not- so glad you put this video up just now!! Great info as always :)
Shalini K if you were just wanting the .1% and are in the us, you can get differin at places like target. I know for me I needed the .3% and it wasn’t covered, but that was only with the name brand differin. My insurance covered the .3% in the generic name which is adapalene gel
Well, now I know why Clindamycin isn't working (thank you, sadly). It replaced Onexton with 1% Benzyl Peroxide - which worked - but was no longer accepted by my insurance (though if it's the best option, I'm in). I can't get to dose at a higher level of benzyl. Even Walgreen's doesn't sell one under 5% - over the counter or via prescription. I have mild to no acne with occasional flares on the side of my nose/chin (I'm on a Retinol building up to Tretinoin). My dry, sensitive, reactive skin can't tolerate more than 1 to 2% of benzyl. I binge watched all your acne videos and I'm still stumped: prescription? Neutrogena 2.5% rapid clear spot treatment when needed? A daily treatment? Oh, wise one, I look to you for guidance. P.S. if you know a great derm from your NYC days, pass it on - or come back to NYC! We have Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Costco, Fairway. No Kroger but we're getting a Wegmans....But you'll be hanging out at the Union Square Farmer's Market....Heaven.
I recently got prescribed clindamycin phosphate (liquid form I guess) And when I went to use it smelled like rubbing alcohol therefore I was very hesitant to use it. Thank you for clarifying any concerns I had :)
I used retinol for ages and it didn’t really do anything for my acne. As soon as I started using clindamycin, I saw a substantial decrease in acne. My skin was better than it was in years.
I actually don’t know since I never used it together. But there are topicals which have retinol and clindamycin in them so it is ok, I guess. Don’t use them in the same routine, use retinol in the pm since it doesn’t do well with the sun. But be careful with both since clindamycin is an antibiotic and retinol is also a very potent drug. Work it into your routine one at a time and listen to your skin. Also don’t do this without consulting a doctor. I’m not a doctor neither am I qualified
I was kinda excited when I saw this video because my dermatologist prescribed me clindamycin topical gel for my acne and for some reason I was excited to see this.
glad you have a video on this because my doctor prescribed me this today for my acne with benzoyl peroxide. I think mine heals with redness but I need to prevent breakouts and scarring (I have chronic skin picking disorder unfortunately)
It's antibiotic anti-inflammatory and can help in red cystic acne not particularly whiteheads and blackheads + can reduce scar formation during active acne + when use with benzoyl peroxide topically, chances of bacterial resistance are less.
I’m using it on my face right now due to “maskne “ from my mask at work and I breastfeed so I can’t take an oral antibiotic. The topical is definitely helping!
I just came from the dermatologist. She diagnosed me with mild rosacea and acne and prescribed a gel with 10% Clindamycin and 30% BP, another cream from Avène called "Cleanance Comedomed" and a BB Cream from Leti SR for the rosacea. Of course, I came to you to hear what this all mean ;)
Watching this made me so sad 😭 I had to beg my doctor to refer me to a derm and she didn’t . My concerns for acne clogged pores and bad pigmentation were glossed over :( I was prescribed this and I really don’t know what to do . Acne came back with a force and now when I look at my face with all the dark spots I want to cry .
Thank you so much for all of this information. I just got off of tactupump after using it for 2 months and was prescribed a clindamycin topical gel due to the type of acne I was getting (red bumps) and these explanations are great! Didn't get that much from my doctor or pharmacist :) haha
I’ve been using clindamycin cream for two months. Just had my follow up with my derm & he didn’t change my script even though it’s done nothing for me. “It takes time”. I’ve had acne 20 years. I’ve tried every single oral route and they all hurt my stomach - the only thing I haven’t tried is adapalene or accutane. I don’t know what to do and I’m so fed up. I just wish my acne would go away.
They partake scar gel - it’s made for men but it will work on your skin too. Check out our on Google, let me know how it goes. I have used it for scars abs it really helps with other stuff
1) Try adapalene/ Clindamycin gel alternate daily for the 1st week then daily from the 2nd week 2) 5% benzoyl peroxide daily 3) doxycycline 100mg twice daily
I believe I had hormonal acne in my 30’s, and my dermatologist prescribed clindomyacin and benzoyl peroxide. It worked really well for five years, then I broke out again. I thought my skin had changed, but after watching this, I wonder if the bacteria became resistant. That was in the early 90’s, and I guess antibiotics weren’t limited as much then. My teenage daughter has been prescribed birth control and tetracycline, and her acne is finally clearing up. She is also using Differin, ZapZyt and benzoyl peroxide. Tetracycline prescription is for a maximum of six months, and hopefully her acne won’t return. Thanks for the info, it really helps to know how these products work.
Thank you for always being so thorough with explaining how things work and why they could be prescribed! I was just prescribed Clindamycin gel+benzoyl peroxide wash by my GP for moderate hormonal acne. I’m hoping it will help some (since it doesn’t deal with the problems of my hormones) And insurance won’t give me a referral to a derm unless it doesn’t help for 3 months... Thanks again Dr. Dray!
Dr Dray, please make a video on common sunscreens available in India. Lotus UV matte gel and Neutrogena dry touch sunscreens are the two most common sunscreens used here. Would provide more information if you are interested. P.s. We have more UV filters allowed here as compared to the US. So you can talk about the filters too.
I’ve been on Clindamycin 1% lotion AM & Mid day, Tretinoin PM for about a year now, my skin does look better, however none of these prescribed products doesn’t help with acne marks left from using these. Tretinoin started to dry my face and now i use it on and off throughout the week Dr. Dray, your videos have helped me moisturize better ! I’ve been using Avenno for my face but it sits on my face like a layer, not really a moisturizer
Try to use salicylic acid treatment pads (not too much since you’re using other active ingredients) along with aloe Vera gel and bio oil for acne scarring. They work great for me
What in the hell have I been prescribed!? Haha. Thank you for actually explaining what this stuff is/does to my skin. I have hormonal acne and my family doctor (she is not a dermatologist) just said “oh use this it will clear up”.... 9 months ago 😒 Anyway my acne is still very much present, and I will be reducing the use of this topical medication significantly! Wow... Just... Thank you. I'm so glad I searched this and learned the risks involved. Thanks ❤️
hello i have hormonal acne as well and I went to a dermatologist about 2 weeks and she recommended me this without even looking at my face. Can I ask what you use now instead?
Problems with general practitioners, they are jack of all trades, master of none and you have to push them to refer you to specialists, so annoying, especially if you have a male GP, they don't listen to women as much as female GPs (in general, not all males are bad but older GPs......).

I just wanted to say a heart felt thank you My daughters wedding is soon a big society one and I was feeling very low because of the way my skin looks and felt after years of using the old glycolic acid and Decleor oils etc etc I realised it was all transient & short term And since following you’re pared back simple routine my skin looks more alive and healthy!!Funnily enough I was in Superdrug the other day and found myself chatting to a lady who also follows you We both said it’s the Drey way or no way lol 😂 I now encourage my daughter to adopt that I call KISS DREY Keep It Simple Stupid .like DREY .......wish I’d had access to this information when I was younger Thankyou so much darling .. you’ll really never know just how much you’ve helped me regain my confidence Skin still dry ... but vastly improved thanks to You Andrea Chick 🐣
Luv-n-stuff to you and your lovely mum xxxx
Thanks! Wow so cool to hear that you met a fellow viewer!
Thanks! I enjoy all of your videos. Please address Azelaic Acid next time! I heard that it's a great ingredient by virtue of its anti-acne properties and low side effects.
I’ve seen your channel for years suggested to me because of how I’m always looking for skin care cures. Thank you for posting content.
i really like how you repeat the things and information you describe it really make them stuck in my head , thankkkkk you
I was prescribed clindamycin phosphate gel to treat my HS and it does indeed help with inflammation, and bacterial infection.
Shame to let it go to waste!
ice cream for dinner over candle light sounds divine
Thank you for this video, Dr. Dray! Would love to see a video on Azelaic Acid or Finacea in the future :)
Nicki Marie exactly
Same thing happened to me! I was prescribed for it but it eventually stopped working months later
@@gabyw5907 Wanted to call my derm to prescribe Clind 1% gel I thought it is a one time thing and you clear for life. But you guys are saying it stopped working now am confused. mmh
@@venusdemilo3378 my doctor prescribed the topical with a plan to just keep using it long term
Bc your dermatologist would never be able to spend 20 mins speaking to you. Thank insurance reimbursement for that.

Thank you for another helpful video 💕 I'm writing a research paper purely for fun on hormonal acne so I can better understand how to take care of myself, and your videos are a valuable tool. Helping patients understand what's happening also goes a long way in building trust with their doctors!
Can you say which type of clindamycin gel i just wanna to buy it in online
Dedication
I used to use Benzaclin, and it was definitely helpful. However I found that it began not to work as effectively after about a year of use. However, since you say it is anti inflammatory, I think i may get a refill of my prescription. Maybe it can help reduce the scarring a bit from a cyst. As always, thank you for such great videos. You are helping so many people.
it will reduce the chance of a scar if there is active acne, but will not reduce an existing scar
I went to my dermatologist she prescribed me 3 different medications for my acne didn’t explain much about it but I knew were to find answers and tips as to how to apply my meds 😊 Thanks Dr Dray.
Exactly! I went to my dermatologist yesterday and she prescribed clindamycin and here I am! Thank goodness for Dr. Dray! 😊
Same... thankfully dr dray has videos on literally every medication I was just prescribed lol 😆
Go in with a list of questions for your dermatologist, they get paid enough.
Love from the Netherlands
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying
Thank you. That was extremely helpful...more helpful than the visits to my own Dr! 🤔. You answered ALL my questions I have for my Dr. in this one video!!
Thank you for all the information your channel is very helpful
Wow. Speechless. Thank you. My questions were answered 😩
Glad this was helpful :)
Best acne gel out there & it’s not even close!
You're getting more and more beautiful each day, Dr. Dray
Thanks!
being your subscriber is like having dermatologist as friend, your vlogs are so fun. I switch my one meal a day into plant based and feel so gooood. I tried doing home work out as you do, my lifestyle gets healthier lately.
I have seen loads of your videos thinking you do marathon as well. Do you use running app ? and what is it?
I am a runner too. (not really i just do mini marathon almost every week and did half or micro)
Thanks! No
I went to the dermatologist and they told me the two products I’m using now is good and they just prescribed me onexton and veltin. I hope this helps me. Very informative video!! 👍
Thank you Dr. Dray!!! Super helpful!
The Cerave BP cleanser is very gentle! I love their formulated. Im about to start the Apostrophe Tretinoin/Clindamycin/Spiranolactone topical treatment in conjunction with BP. Really hoping this combo clears me up

What about clindamycin and tretinoin?
@@KawaiiNecronomicon505 Hi! i just started on the topical gel. how long did it take to start seeing changes?
Aaliyah Bustamante do you know if I can get tretinoin online ?
Candice Farinde I wouldn’t because its an acid and many people give bootleg products. Plus u need to start with the right dosage otherwise u could do serious damage to your skin.
@@wowcandice you can get it as Differin gel in the US in Europe its called Sona gel.
Aaliyah Bustamante Hi i’m just started using clindamycin and tretinoin! the creams dry my skin out and i was wondering if you can put a lotion on top of any of them. i don’t know if you will see this or not but thank you!
This has completely cleared my acne in just 5 days!
I just came across your channel and I love your videos! They are so informative! Azelaic acid+Tretinoin= Gamechanger for acne prone skin ❤
Been using Duac for two weeks.. Fingers x
I use a prescription that contains tretinoin, azeliac acid, and clindamycin. Thanks for the explanation.
Dray, it makes a difference that you care and are helping people treat acne strategically.
you should publish your results
:)
I was prescribed it with no clear instructions or any guidance on how to use it. That and benzoyl peroxide and this video helped a lot! Thank you
I recently got prescribed clindamycin phosphate (liquid form I guess) And when I went to use it smelled like rubbing alcohol therefore I was very hesitant to use it. Thank you for clarifying any concerns I had :)
How did it work
You are awesome. Your knowledge is worth appreciating. You are a very good human being that you are giving in depth information for everyone.
I used retinol for ages and it didn’t really do anything for my acne. As soon as I started using clindamycin, I saw a substantial decrease in acne. My skin was better than it was in years.
Did the clindamycin itch for you?
@@kevinsheart4451 not at all.
Can i use clindamycin losion and retinal in the same routine?
I actually don’t know since I never used it together. But there are topicals which have retinol and clindamycin in them so it is ok, I guess. Don’t use them in the same routine, use retinol in the pm since it doesn’t do well with the sun. But be careful with both since clindamycin is an antibiotic and retinol is also a very potent drug. Work it into your routine one at a time and listen to your skin. Also don’t do this without consulting a doctor. I’m not a doctor neither am I qualified
So how often do u use it? when will it stop peeling and get flaky?? Im starting mine tonight. phosphate 1% tretinoin 0.025% is yours the same?
So much great information! Thank you!

glad you have a video on this because my doctor prescribed me this today for my acne with benzoyl peroxide. I think mine heals with redness but I need to prevent breakouts and scarring (I have chronic skin picking disorder unfortunately)
Thanks for watching!
i am in the exact same boat!
It's antibiotic anti-inflammatory and can help in red cystic acne not particularly whiteheads and blackheads + can reduce scar formation during active acne + when use with benzoyl peroxide topically, chances of bacterial resistance are less.
Enjoyed:) Helpful info!! Thanks!! Happy Happy Friday;)
Happy Friday Ms Susan
Appreciate all your info! How long is a short time and a long time?
It's nice that Clindamycin is safe in pregnancy, though.
yes :)
I’m using it on my face right now due to “maskne “ from my mask at work and I breastfeed so I can’t take an oral antibiotic. The topical is definitely helping!
Happy Melanoma Monday! Keep up the good work.

🙌🏻thank you for this! I’m on a topical right now. Very helpful and informative❤️
I am sorry to hear this.
Wait the clindamycin made it worse? I was prescribe this too and trust me I can totally understand took me forever to get referred to a dermatogist
Get a different doctor or go back and ask for what you want.
Get a new doctor.
Hey Dr Dray Great info!! 80 degrees in Anderson today Just beautiful! Hope you have a great weekend!
Thanks! Getting steamy here too :)
Thank you so much for all of this information. I just got off of tactupump after using it for 2 months and was prescribed a clindamycin topical gel due to the type of acne I was getting (red bumps) and these explanations are great! Didn't get that much from my doctor or pharmacist :) haha
This is so informative and exactly what I needed to know and more. Thank you so much
I’ve been using clindamycin cream for two months.
1) Try adapalene/ Clindamycin gel alternate daily for the 1st week then daily from the 2nd week
2) 5% benzoyl peroxide daily
3) doxycycline 100mg twice daily

My dermatologist prescribed it and it prevents and treats my pimples and acne.
How do you use that toner? And do you use it both in the morning and pm?
Thanks again Dr. Dray! Witch hazel has been all the rave lately. If possible, I'd love a video on that.
i discussed witch hazel in my oily skin care q&a
This is a great video--so helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for the info, it really helps to know how these products work.
yeah the ocps help alot, and the tetracyline kick starts clearance, with the goal to wean off and let the ocps and topicals do the work
THANK YOU! Benzol Peroxide it is!
Me too. What is your skincare routine with duac?
Hi Dr Dray. Can you do a video about the ban on oxybenzone and octinoxnate in Hawaii and sunscreen?
Hawaii banned them because they are harmful to the reef...people are also harmful to the reef
Love your channel
As always, very thoroughly done Q&A. I enjoyed listening to the details. Is Azelaic acid comedolytic?
Dr Dray, you enlighten me, again and again! I really change my skincare regime since I watch your videos. You are my new muse... 😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks!
Dray!
How was your experience with the prescription? My daughter was prescribed the same prescription as well.
Good Day Dr Dray....love hearing all I can about our skin ...thank you👍🌟🇺🇸🌈🐸
:)
I’ve been on Clindamycin 1% lotion AM & Mid day, Tretinoin PM for about a year now, my skin does look better, however none of these prescribed products doesn’t help with acne marks left from using these. Tretinoin started to dry my face and now i use it on and off throughout the week
Dr.
