Hey guys...stay tuned, next Friday I have a part 2 to this video. In part 2 I am going to address questions about bp and skin aging/oxidation, will bp or sa stop working or will the skin get use to them, and address use in pregnancy and lactation
Im prescribed Benzoyl peroxide/erythtromiocine (which i use everyday-sometimes twice, along with a Salcylic acid wash in the morning. Are they too harsh to use all together everyday? Im wondering if i should start rotating my products/topicals. :)
*Salicylic Acid:* Mild acne, cleans pores, best for whiteheads & blackheads *Benzoyl Peroxide:* Moderate to severe acne, cysts, painful red bumps, kills bacteria
I’ve struggled with acne for 2 years and for me I’ve noticed that salicylic acid helps control the surface level pimples but benzoyl peroxide is extremely affective in dealing with acne as a whole and deeper penetrating acne. So if you have minor pimples I’d say go with salicylic acid but if you can acne that’s flared up and red then go with benzoyl peroxide
Folks do not forget sunscreen. I remember when I was a teenager and I had applied an ointment with benzoyl peroxide and then went out to buy bread. I returned with the area quite itchy and somewhat dark. It was just superficial but I realised how important sunscreen is when using these products.
Matheus Werly I start by this SO strongly. A year back I was trying to treat my chin with benzoyl peroxide and I did it every day morning and night and I wouldn’t put sunscreen on and it was red red red red. It’s essential to wear sunscreen with it during the day
@@tamrynedwards4896 It is very good that now we realise how important sunscreen is. I am thankfull that I had irritation by the sun because it made me create the custom of wearing sunscreen even before making my first appointment to a dermatologist when she reinforced that.
Omg it remind me of what I did when I was a teenager. I brought a spot in BP treatment, and I slathered it all over my cheeks where I had acne. It made my cheeks red, and my aunt told me boys shouldn’t be wearing makeup. 😂 she thought I put blush on. A week later my acne was gone, but cheeks where lighter than the rest of my face. My skin is even now.
Something about how Dr. Dray said "well hey guys!" at the beginning made me feel like she was saying hi to her best friends. What a sweet lady. Love her
I started doing the panoxyl armpit mask as you suggested, and I can't thank you enough! I constantly worried about my deodorant wearing off and developing body odor midday, and now I sometimes don't even need deodorant! It is something I thought would never go away. THANK YOU !
Just two weeks into using cerave SA cleanser and already noticed hyperpigmentation and break outs decreasing! Long-time acne sufferer here. Thanks Dr. Dray!!
Lovely me oh that’s my reg routine. She’s got a video about it too. Cleanse with SA in the morning and use a gentle cleanser at night followed by moisturizer then differin last thing before bed. I wouldn’t use differin every night use maybe like 2 or 3 nights a week. That with SA can get super drying. Hope that helps!
Same for me! I have tried EVERYTHING and benzoyl peroxide has been the ONLY thing that has cleared my hormonal acne. I get the equate version of clean and clear face wash (purple one). I use white face cloths and towels. It’s worth it!
@@iivy1818 I used 5% right off the bat because it's the only percentage of bp I can get near me. My skin didn't react badly to it which is kinda normal since I have a very non-sensitive skin. I'd recommend starting at 1%, though. P.S., I don't recommend doing what I did because some people are sensitive and can damage their skin. Use a lower percentage just for safe measures.
I'm 55 and still get a bumpy forehead, especially in warmer weather. Using a Stridex pad with salicylic acid clears it up right away. I can't believe at my age, I'm still buying acne products. As long as I use it, my skin is great.
my skin hated benzoyl peroxide until I started using it as short contact therapy (10 minutes contact time at night and then wash off). Now it’s super effective at controlling breakouts without drying me out.
Salicylic acid use to work for me when I was in high school and I would get the occasional pimple but my acne got really bad when I started college and now since it’s hormonal I love using 2.5% benzoyl peroxide to spot treat those cystic pimples I sometimes get. The BP irritated my skin at first but now my skin loves it.
Carefull with that. I've seen endless people complaining about it on forums: it can have severe side effects ans create crust on top of the skin over time. It often throws skin out of balance for a very long period of time. American dermatologists love it for fast results but don't really care about long-term effect. Here in Europe it's far not as common as it is in the USA. It's always better to start from your hormones and visiting a good endocrinologist.
Ofc I'm in minority in liking a hyped product.. For me it makes my skin worse on daily use.. Can only use it few times a week.. It also makes my skin drier.. I used Benzoyl Peroxide spot treatment for years and years when I was younger but I found that it was less effective for acne when I got older. I switched to a salicylic acid spot treatment and I worked way better. I know you said bacteria doesn’t become resistant to benzoyl peroxide.. maybe the type of acne I had when I was younger is different than the type I have now.
I would love to see a video on what you think about proactiv. It’s keeps my skin clear, but I’m wondering if I could go for a cheaper alternative. Love all Your videos BTW 💗😘

I keep coming back to this video. It helps a lot since I don't want to go to the derm 4-6 times a year every time I reassess my skincare regiment. Thank you so much for the breadth and depth of info, Dr. Dray! I feel like I can make actual informed decisions about my skin. Much more helpful than spending 20 min with my dermatologist lol
so true! my dermatologist is decent but he dosen’t explain anything; he gave me azeliac acid once and that was it didn’t explain why or how often etc I learned everything I needed to learn on youtube 🤣🤣
Dr Dray I have suggestions for upcoming videos. (1) Zinc as an acne treatment and zinc in general in skin care. (2) skin cycle - I know you have touched upon this subject many times, but never in full depth.
QUESTION regarding SA/BP. I am using tretinoin every night, exactly as you explain in videos. Should I also use SA/BP to clear out these clogged pores or just be patient and the retin A will do it all??? THANK YOU!! ***SO grarteful for you. Your tips, especially on moisturizing, have CHANGED my life in a matter of days. I'm so glad not to keep getting duped by the industry.
Emily Hefferon I have to look at the tube when I get home (I’m at work) but I will reply! I honestly don’t remember if it’s percent but I only use it at night and I use something else during the day. I will put everything I use in the comments & some tips they gave me for my specific skin type. Idk if it will work for everyone.
CAUTION: Don't know why its not often mentioned but if you are allergic to aspirin, do not use Salicylic acid. Aspirin is a form of salicylic acid. Also, if you think the cause of your acne is due to something internal (the best example for you is...imagine you are allergy to something you ate and you get hives (a raised bump on the skin) and not just due to oil & bacteria on top of the skin...I would really ease up on both Salicyclic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide.
Absolutely love the Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. It is so gentle. Using only 2 days a week along with the PC Niacinamide help tremendously with the flaking/peeling due to Tretinoin.
“mysteriously” bleached so many of my favorite clothes until i realized i was being too liberal with the benzly peroxide. not only does acne mess with my self esteem because of my face now its ruined the clothes i thought i looked good in 😂 lessons learned lmao
Dr.Dray is the best the information she gives you dont even get it from a dermatologist ones I have been to just write a prescription and send you off because they too busy to sit and talk most of the time I have had to do my own research to figure it out but it's so nice to see a medical professional make vedios and educating people regarding skin care in detail
I started using a salicylic acid cleanser, followed by toner/essense, The Ordinary Niacinamide/Zinc serum, Neutrogena benzoyl peroxide leave-on mask treatment, then my moisturizer and spf. I've been using this for a few weeks now, and it seems to be working great for treating my acne.
I think formulation has a lot to do with it. As a teen, I used Neutrogena and it did melt my face off, especially around my chin and jaw. As an adult, I can use SA with nearly zero melting as long as I give my skin a break on the actives.
This is so helpful. I use both alternating everyday but I didn't know how they worked. I use a benzoyl peroxide leave on at night (every other day) and salicylic acid wash the following day. The benzoyl peroxide is the only that helps with deep painful acne - but my skin is really sensitive to it so I have to use it in moderation.
I got really bad dandruf everywhere (head, eyelashes, eyebrows, etc), on top of that, I got oily skin. I don't get bacterial acne, so, salicylic acid makes more sense. And it works like a gem.
Thanks for this! I started using Cerave’s SA cleanser the other day and it has totally changed my skin. Not even exaggerating, my face was so much smoother after the first 2 times I used it. I’d been using PanOxyl in the shower for the past few weeks but didn’t really see any changes, so I’m extremely happy
SA cleanser is working really nicely for me so far (and the lady at the counter said she loves it). Salicylic acid takes time to start working to it's full extent, but still.
I love benzoyl peroxide, it works for me. Thanks to your channel I stripped down my skin care routine, cut out fragrances and wear sunscreen everyday. Thank you 🙏🏻
I use lower percentages of both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide in the morning, then rotate between glycolic acid and retinol at night. It sounds like a lot but this is really working well for my skin and it looks nicer now than it has in a long time. It's so much smoother and more moisturised. I still get hormonal breakouts but my cystic acne is greatly reduced and the PIH is usually gone in a week instead of a month. My husband started using Panoxyl for his hidradenitis suppurativa after I heard you recommend it and that's improved for him too.
I've tried multiple benzoyl peroxide face washes and the clear winter every time is oxy advanced Care... All benzoyl peroxide works the same... It just comes down to your skin's tolerance you have to find which percentage works best for you...
Direct and realistic strategy on the way to remove the aspects that cause acne are given in this acne guide *AcneCureOnline. Com* I`ve suffered acne conditions for quite some time now and I am delighted to give the ideas in this guide a try. I would undoubtedly suggest this guide to my buddies
I use the neutrogena foaming cleanser, the oil free salicylic acid wash, the benzoyl peroxide face mask/wash, and differin... along with a moisturizer. It's been working well for me.
THANK YOU! I recently started to break out with painful, inflamed red acne, and was feeling slightly lost at how to approach dealing with it. I’m so grateful for your content 🙏
OMG........you would make an incredible professor!! Who knows maybe you do teach as well. Captivating and well spoke. Your energy and commitment to the content you provide is quite impressive.
Same, everyone just repeats the same information there (on top of that often incorrect). And I realized who I was taking advice from... none of those people are dermatologists lol
I am hiiiiiighly allergic to benzoyl peroxide :( I wish I could try it, but it leaves me with welts and a rash. Salicylic acid works well for me though!
I use Paula’s Choice Skin Perrfecting 2% BHA Liquid and it has done wonders for my skin! When I was younger I used to use ProActiv which had 2.5 benzoyl peroxide and I remember my skin seemed whiter and dryer.
Thank you for committing to your presentations! You have helped me understand so much better how to treat my aging skin and help my teen son with his acne, and not waste money buying products that won't work or are targeted for a different audience. I'm a single mom and student, so I appreciate your overall message. I've learned so much in such a short time!! Thank you!!
Honestly, for me benzyl peroxide is the gold standard. Not only did it get rid of my forehead acne, but it also got with of my pesky blackheads which salicylic acid couldn't touch.
I had pretty severe acne for years and after taking your advice in a video to use both, I started washing w salicylic acid in the AM and benzoyl peroxide in the PM followed by my cerave tub moisturizer and my sunscreen and my skin went from having two + new zits everyday to mostly clear 😭😭I suggest the same to all my friends when they ask and they say the same thing
Ayesha Rehman hey it shouldn’t really matter but I buy whatever is cheapest basically and avoid fragrance. Currently I have a clean and clear BP mask/cleanser and panoxyl and Zapzyt SA wash. And it’s called mermaid gel UV or something lol
Thank you! I have been scouring the comments to find anyone who might be using BOTH! This was my plan exactly -AM/PM trade off with both products. So thank you thank you for sharing!!! My next question is-could one use hyaluronic acid after the salicylic acid? My beauty cream before I put on my make up has this...so I am wondering if they will jive together? Anyone have experience?
Thank you Dr Dray , You're the best! Since you recommended the Neutrogena Oil free (salicylic acid) acne wash for black skin, it's all I've been using for a month now and I've seen so much difference. I have also ordered the Zapzyt salicylic acid wash, I can't wait for it to come... Have a great weekend.... Love all the way from England! Xx
I have used Neutrogena oil free acne wash with salicylic acid since I was 11, I am now 36.... I swear by it, have beautiful skin. Have used spf and moisturizer since I was 11 also.... Just started tretinoin!!
Such a thorough overview, Dr. Dray! Thanks for giving it to us in a nutshell. I’m glad you made this video so you can refer viewer questions to this information-packed video.
I have oily skin. SA all the way for me. Have used the neutrogena oil free acne wash for almost 2 decades on and off now. Works like magic. 2% all the way. I use adapalene with cosrx rice sleeping mask. Skin has been the best it can be. And sunscreen!!! Thanks dr.dray
I love your channel and your enthusiasm towards BP, but I believe you should warn people more about its high irritating potential. I used it without talking about this product to my dermatologist. She told me she would have never advised it to me. It’s shame I personally can’t tolerate it, because it gave me a good cleaning effect right after the use! Happy that others can. I used it in small amount locally, for a few days or every 2 days and I developed a strong irritation at the end. Basically half of my face was swollen and I couldn’t open my right eye well. Be careful all! Sometimes strong reactions don’t come directly. 😊
Dr Dray, I just wanted to thank you once again for putting up such a well structured video and sharing your awesomeness to us. I don't think you have any idea of how much your efforts create a ripple effect which transcends all over the world. Please don't ever forget that you are appreciated. We love you and God bless you more! Cheers from the Philippines.
PSA: IF YOU CANNOT TOLERATE BPO, LOOK AT THE PERCENTAGE YOURE APPLYING TO YOUR FACE!!! i am using a 2.6% bpo and it has done MAGIC to my skin. the cetaphil one is amazing. studies have shown bpo can be just as effective at all percentages and lower percentages are much more gentle and less drying. the cetaphil formula also contains MICRONIZED BPO which more gentle and effective than other forms. this formula also contains zinc and licorice root which are super calming. HIGHLY recommend for acne (:
I love your in depth analysis. You have saved my skin and allowed me to pass on information to help others and refer them to your videos. Keep up the amazing work Dr. Dray!
I’ve been using benzoyl peroxide and it’s worked really well for my skin. The only issue is it’s bleached a lot of my clothes and I’m currently collecting research on salicylic acid because I’m considering using it instead. Or at least use benzoyl very sparingly. Like in face washes that won’t stay on my skin afterwards.
I have acne prone skin and i use BOTH salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to keep my acne in control. I find that benzoyl peroxide works way better than salicylic acid. I use both in the form of cleansers. I use a salicylic acid cleanser in the morning and benzoyl peroxide cleanser at night.
I found the first benzoyl peroxide wash that didn’t destroy my dry skin. I only use it once day when I have active breakouts - especially on body acne. It’s called AcneFree and it’s only 2.5% which is perfect. I’m absolutely loving it
Tabatha Poelstra I’ve been using it for 3 months, it works! It has same ingredients as proactive for 1/3 of the price. I saw results from acne free in a matter of a week.
tried two different cleansing products with salicylic acid.. but both did not work. happy i've found BENZOYL PEROXIDE bec of you, Dr. Dray. Thank you!!
I was literally asking myself this question yesterday, perfect timing Dr. Dray! Also, I love your background setup and lighting. It's simple and clean but also soft.
8:55 and also 10:30 - That's the part I needed. I just get pimples and blackheads in isolation here and there, without it being red painful bumps and whatnot all over, so salicylic acid seems to be a better choice there. Plus it's less needless skin drying, since when I do see something brewing under the skin in an inflamed manner, I can just then use benzoyl peroxide as a spot treatment for it. My previous logic when I last watched this video was "just use everything!". That was a mistake in my past 10+ years of skincare lol. Careful not to fall into vicious cycles involving actives, it can take YEARS to realise what is going on and to figure out how to escape it (cleansing oil really helped make my skin look normal, by getting rid of dead skin and sebaceous filaments).
I wish you had been around when I was a teenager struggling with my skin. My skin has never looked better than it has this past eight months since I subbed to this channel! My niece is going to benefit greatly from all the knowledge I have now! Thank you Dr Dray 💜

BP works best for my cystic acne. However tretinoin is AMAZING! for my skin!
I hate how you have to wait 20-30 minutes after applying tretinoin before applying moisturizer because of how dry I feel my face becoming
👍
Eva Stood my derm told me I could mix both. That’s what I do and it’s been working! My face is the best it’s been my whole life!
What percent do you use? Tretinoin is perception only right ?
I had an allergic reaction to benzoyl peroxide. My whole face swelled up when I used a face wash with it. Salicylic for me.
maxedoutco me too. Everyone kept asking what was wrong with my face😖. Haven’t tried Salicylic acid yet.
What percentage benzoyl peroxide?
Yeah, it swells my eyelids shut.
Some Random Lady same
What sa do you use?
Dr.Dray is the best the information she gives you dont even get it from a dermatologist ones I have been to just write a prescription and send you off because they too busy to sit and talk most of the time I have had to do my own research to figure it out but it's so nice to see a medical professional make vedios and educating people regarding skin care in detail
I started using a salicylic acid cleanser, followed by toner/essense, The Ordinary Niacinamide/Zinc serum, Neutrogena benzoyl peroxide leave-on mask treatment, then my moisturizer and spf. I've been using this for a few weeks now, and it seems to be working great for treating my acne.
does this routine helps to reduce blackheads??
I use both everyday and it works wonders for my skin, no irritation at all
I’m weird I guess. BP doesn’t irritate me but SA makes me feel like my face is slowly melting off!
Melissa Roa same, the top layer of my skin starts to like shrink so I get this weird texture then the next day it peels and burns
@@noelleaf1288 Same, the texture of the skin after the salicylic acid is similar to saran wrap? :I I use Paula's Choice 2% BHA (black bottle). eh :c
Ethe Rike exactly!!! I didn’t know how to describe it. It like if you take plastic wrap and lightly crinkle it 😭 idk what that is
The CeraVe SA cleanser is really hydrating, I think it has a low percentage of SA
Salicylic doesn’t seem to work for me 😭😭 but benzoyl peroxide works great!
Did it cause purging
I may try the SA cleanser next time.
SA cleanser is working really nicely for me so far (and the lady at the counter said she loves it). Salicylic acid takes time to start working to it's full extent, but still.
@@rutbaa4903 - Not for me.
I love benzoyl peroxide, it works for me. Thanks to your channel I stripped down my skin care routine, cut out fragrances and wear sunscreen everyday. Thank you 🙏🏻
Last night I was going through all of your videos and researching the difference between the two and now you post this!! The universe is crazy 💕
BP has saved me from my body acne
Direct and realistic strategy on the way to remove the aspects that cause acne are given in this acne guide *AcneCureOnline. Com* I`ve suffered acne conditions for quite some time now and I am delighted to give the ideas in this guide a try. I would undoubtedly suggest this guide to my buddies
Benzoyl peroxide is my holy grail but salicylic acid burns and irritates. It’s all about moderation and careful application with BP.
love the "oh hey Guys" at the beginning it's like you are surprised to see us every time hahahah
I love Dr Drays channel much more than the time I was spending on the Skincareaddiction subreddit. I swear almost everyone over there is loony
Same, everyone just repeats the same information there (on top of that often incorrect). And I realized who I was taking advice from... none of those people are dermatologists lol
Haha I want to check it out now! 🍿😁
As a sufferer I was confused between salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide..now atleast I got the clear idea. Thanks
I am hiiiiiighly allergic to benzoyl peroxide :( I wish I could try it, but it leaves me with welts and a rash. Salicylic acid works well for me though!
allison s. Same here!! My whole skin rashes up, though doc tried to put me on it countless times
im the opposite lol
Same with me. It makes my whole face swell, so much I can’t even see out of my eyes
Me too. My entire face swelled up with benzoyl peroxide.
Me too. However, I can use 5% benzoyl peroxide. If I use 10% benzoyl peroxide, my face was swelling after few hours.
Thank you!!
I use both. I use the Acne Free BP face wash and then after moisturizing I use Paula's choice BHA.
Very timely for me. I’m going to start the Benzoyl peroxide for my Hiradentis.
👍
Happy Friday Frances!! I Hope YOUR Enjoying Your Day, and.i Hope It's a Lovely One!!
I've been using it for that for a year
I have HS. I've been using panoxyl on my underarms for years. When I stop using it I notice more flare ups.
Honestly, for me benzyl peroxide is the gold standard. Not only did it get rid of my forehead acne, but it also got with of my pesky blackheads which salicylic acid couldn't touch.
shomshom ni
Hi, Can I kindly ask what benzoyl peroxide you use.
I prefer salicylic acid in face wash like the neutrogena one and leave on benzoyl peroxide like oxy 10.
I know this video is old but i love it! You can tell how informed she is right from the start, and ofc she's really pretty 😂❤
Hii! Which SA and BP face wash you used? And which sunscreen?
Ayesha Rehman hey it shouldn’t really matter but I buy whatever is cheapest basically and avoid fragrance. Currently I have a clean and clear BP mask/cleanser and panoxyl and Zapzyt SA wash. And it’s called mermaid gel UV or something lol
@@michachalikesyou thankyou so much❤
Anime Portal she’s saying she went from having 2 or more zits per day, to pretty much clear skin.
Can I give this video 1 million likes? So informative! I wish my doctors were that well informed... Thank you so much!
Xx
Olakemi Which video did she say this?
@@nibabi Heyy, she says it at the beginning of this video xx
ua-cam.com/video/cXuIsCOVVr0/v-deo.html
Olakemi didn’t work for my Black skin.
Both works really well on me. I use a 2% salicylic acid facial Wash and apply benzoyl peroxide 0.5 with a moisturizer.
This video came like a heaven sent, I just googled the exact same phrase as the title a couple of days ago
I have used Neutrogena oil free acne wash with salicylic acid since I was 11, I am now 36.... I swear by it, have beautiful skin. Have used spf and moisturizer since I was 11 also.... Just started tretinoin!!
Is it true that dairy products cause acne?
yess this would be a great video
Miriam Gonzalez great question!
Miriam Gonzalez I don’t think it causes acne, but rather inflammation since dairy is inflammatory.
Not true
it depends for each individual. for me it does
What a comfort and useful tool a good memory like yours must have been throughout your schooling and, now, in your profession!
Such a thorough overview, Dr. Dray! Thanks for giving it to us in a nutshell. I’m glad you made this video so you can refer viewer questions to this information-packed video.
thanks :)
I love benzoyl peroxide. It keeps my skin calmed. Thank you for all your help, Dr. Dray!
@Google User Yes, I am using differin too!
thanks for watching
i watching this video that is 2 years ago,and dr dray look the same in 2022,woww
Same as me. I developed a similar allergy over time. My full face swollen shut :(
benzoyl peroxide really annoys my skin, but it treats spots really well. salicylic acid has so far been clearing up my skin way better
Cheers from the Philippines.
benzoyl peroxide has always worked for me much better for me. Much faster and more effective
Happy friday dr dray! Because of you I am a sunscreen advocate to my family 🌞😎⚔️
Happy Friday!
Same w neutrogena stubborn acne. It’s 2.5% you don’t need 9 or 10% it works just as good and yes it’s micro so it penetrates better
Salicylic acid makes me break out. BP is my go to!
I have found that using both in conjunction has been the key to keep my skin clear
I’m done using anything with BP as my face and bath towels are all spotty/bleached. Ughhh
Your skin looks flawless
Can you please do a clinique skin care products review?! (Specially the surge 72 hours moisturizer and surge line)
i live for the paula's choice 2% bha. not irritating or drying for me (combo skin) at all
I wish you had been around when I was a teenager struggling with my skin. My skin has never looked better than it has this past eight months since I subbed to this channel!
My niece is going to benefit greatly from all the knowledge I have now! Thank you Dr Dray 💜
Am here to make a change for good it has been a journey 17 yrs down the line I forgot how I used to b b4 teen age😭😭😭
Hello from Europe! I watch all your videos! I have changed my daily routine and love Cerave products, it worked on me with Rosacea, on my son with eczema and on my teenager daughter with acne. I am still learning about other products. Finally some simple way to see through the true and false advertising in Internet.
