Man was he a player, he just seemed to breeze by players with ease, for me he was the best goal scorer of all time.there should be a statue of him outside the ground.

He inspired me to love the game aged seven. I learnt the game watching him, I became two footed because of him and the kids in the playground asked me "who do you think you are, Jimmy Greaves?" It was the greatest derisory comment anyone could ever have given me. I remember arriving at school one Monday hearing he'd been sold to West Ham and it was although my world had fallen apart. I remember the first game my dad took me to at WHL. A dour affair other than Jimmy scoring the winner and him and Bobby Moore doing a little jig on the pitch, that has been shown on tv numerous times. The old man (a Millwall fan) was shouting out "Oi Greaves where's yer handbag?" to wind me up. The looks he got from the Spurs crowd in the Paxton. No one fancied taking him on though. As an aside, illustrious names like Redknapp, Venables, John Charles (gawd I'm old) Pat of course, Peters and Hurst played that day. I also believe it was Grotier's debut in goal for the Hammers.

He'd put on the shirt, go onto the pitch and do his job.. He was very very good at his job... A master of his trade and on top of that, he was a smashing bloke...

Would be great if spurs fans could be given chance to thank Jimmy greaves at the new stadium. A pre season friendly that would be first game at the new stadium. A sort of testimonial. I'm sure Spurs fans would turn out in support of one of our greatest players. Very sad to see Him going through bad times and I'll health. COYS.

Just sorry that he played for 3 London clubs, but never the Arsenal.

A player of perpetual motion on the pitch, he ghosted past players like they weren't there, he moved with a silky pace, and a balance that made him appear like he was floating, as he left a trail of opponents in his wake, as he rounded the keeper to side foot another goal with effortless class......the word great, and genius is banded round to freely... But not when it came to Jimmy Greave's he was both and much much more.....the Best

As a kid I saw Jimmy at Chelsea and against Preston who had one of the greats in Tom Finney he scored the greatest goal I ever saw in my 77 years when he beat half the Preston team to score.
The ground went quiet and then the crowd erupted in clapping and the Preston player joined in and Finney came over and shook his hand. I looked at my dad and he was crying and I can see that goal to my dying day.
My dad who played for Brentford during WW" always said he was the greatest player he ever saw and to me he was my first and only hero. THE GREATEST.

Much is made of Greaves' ability to go round players and walk the ball into the net, and rightly so, but the clips here also show him scoring from a free kick, going around a defensive wall and a longer distance "thunderbolt" shot.

As a youngster i was lucky enough to see Jimmy Greaves play... I rank him with the Mathews ....Bests.....Charltons... That Double winning side of 61/62 was amazing.... In saying that as a Villa fan now living in OZ i remember Villa beating Spurs 2..1 in front of 60,000 early August 62

The double winning side was 1960/61 and Greaves was signed the next season. He is a legend and I saw him play often, his partnership with Alan Gilzean was fantastic, I think they were called the "G" men.

Jimmy Greaves was undoubtly and indisputably the greatest ever English goalscorer. He scored in every debut in his football career.
His goalscoring feat for Tottenham Hotspurs was legendary and who can forget the opening goal he scored for Spurs against Burnley at Wembley in the 1962 FA Cup final.Cool as a cucumber he just glided the ball into the net.
But unlike his scoring feats for Spurs Jimmy Greaves's England career did not live up to high expectations except for one performance with Scotland at Wembley in the 1961 Home Championship.England thrashed the Scots 9-3 that day and Greaves registered a hat-trick.His maiden World Cup in Chile in 1962 was not impressive.Greaves would be much remembered for catching a stray dog just before England played Brazil in the 1962 World Cup quarter final tie at Rancagua.England were sent crashing out by eventual champions Brazil 3-1.
In the 1966 World Cup hosted by England hope and high expectations were placed on the shoulders of Jimmy Greaves to score the goals and win the World Cup for England.
Greaves did play in the first three matches but manager the late Alf Ramsey already knew of Greaves inability to perform well in an England shirt. He had seen Greaves perform below expectations when England were stunned 3-2 by Austria in a friendly at Wembley in 1965.
But Ramsey was willing to gamble on Greaves in the 1966 World Cup finals.
But thanks to an injury to Greaves Ramsey put his faith on the green horn Geoff Hurst and the rest is history.
And when Greaves had recovered during the evening of the World Cup final many had expected Ramsey to field Greaves but the latter sticked to the same team that had outplayed Portugal in the semifinals.
So disappointed of being omitted from the final line up Greaves the same morning took his bags and leave. It was a disappointment Greaves never recovered from.He said years after that it still hurts but since then respected what Ramsey had did then.

What the hell is Nicholson on about Greaves having 'more skill than he's credited for ' ????
Only a football ignoramus doesn't know he was one of the most brilliantly skilled players in history !
PS He revealed that in 1970 Brian Clough wanted him at Derby, if he'd gone there instead of West Ham I reckon he'd have scored 100+ more goals and won at least one league championship medal.

What's the story behind Alf Ramsey leaving Greaves out of the '66 World Cup Final?

    • @spazmoski37
      @spazmoski37 5 років тому +4

Greaves got injured playing France. Whilst out injured, Hurst took his place.
Manager Alf Ramsey observed that although Hurst was not the prolific goal scorer of Greaves, the team seemed to play with more cohesion and overall balance. On the day of the final, Greaves although recovered from injury, Ramsey went with Hurst . The rest is history. You have to remember there were no substitutes in those days. I'm sure if there was, Greaves would have had seen some action that day.
