  • Jimmy Greaves is English football's most prolific goalscorer of all time. An astonishing 466 top flight goals in 659 appearances, all at the highest level, make him unparalleled as the best finisher English football has ever seen.
Greaves began his career as a schoolboy at Chelsea in 1956, where he still holds the record for a youth footballer in England- netting an incredible 114 goals in a single season.
He made his first team debut a year later scoring in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur. Greaves finished up at Chelsea with two golden boots (1959 & 1961) scoring a club record 41 goals in the 1960/61 season and a total of 132 strikes in 169 appearances. He remains the last person to score 40+ league goals in a season & the youngest player ever to score 100 league goals.
A four month spell in Milan followed, where he netted on his debut again, and also in the Milan derby. Greaves left after scoring a total of 9 goals in 14 appearances & AC Milan went on to be Champions of Serie A.
Greaves joined Tottenham in 1961 for a world record fee £99,999. He scored a hatrick on his debut this time as Spurs thrashed Blackpool 5-1.
Greaves won the FA Cup twice, European Cup Winners Cup & Four Golden Boots (63, 64, 65 & 69) in his time at Spurs, becoming their record goalscorer with 226 goals in 379 games. Greaves finished third in the 1963 B'allon D'or World Player of the Year- 6th in 1964, 7th in 1962 & 10th in 1968 all whilst playing for Tottenham.
Greaves finished his Spurs career in 1970 and joined West Ham United scoring 13 times in 38 appearances. He retired in 1971 at the age of 31.
Jimmy was capped 57 times by England scoring 44 times (3rd in the all time list) he managed 6 hatricks (a record), and 4 on two occasions (Wales & Norway). He was part of the 1966 World Cup winning squad making 3 appearances before missing the majority of the tournament through injury. Greaves also took part in the 1962 World Cup in Chile. He won the Home Championship twice in 61' & 65' respectively.
He remains the highest goalscorer ever in the history of English top flight football with 357 league goals.

There is no doubt in my mind that the game will never again see a goal scorer to compare to the greatest of them all. The only player I have ever seen who made the hardest job in football look so simple. A true genius that only comes along once in a lifetime JAMES PETER GREAVES.

I can tell you about Jimmy Greaves he lived two streets from me as a boy in Huntsman's Road Hainault. He's the most amazing goalscorer I ever saw and I've seen Eusebio Pele Charlton Best loads more. Jimmy was better than all of them. I was a regular at the Boleyn Ground watching Moore Hurst Peters Boyce Sissons,Byrne and the like. Jimmy went to Chelsea. Shame he didn't start out with Hammers they'd have won even more than FA Cup and Eyuropean Cup Winner's cup with him up front. He was almost unstoppable once he got the ball near the box. Like it was tied to his boots. His goals/appearances ratio is incredible - no player does that now.I think only Nat Lofthouse in the 1950's has a better ratio for England...he had a natural low centre of gravity you couldn't knock him off the ball. Brilliant economy of movement, moved about creating space, mostly kept the ball low scoring many times close to the keeper's feet. Sad what happened in 1966 I saw all the England matches at Wembley (had a ten match ticket) and Ramsey was right to stick to a winning team. Greaves failed to score in the opener against Uruguay. He then failed to score against France (very unusual for Jimmy) and a French defender gouged his shin. Greaves was out injured and Ramsay made changes and stuck to a winning team and won the World Cup. I watched our West Ham trio do the business in that final with german horns blasting in my ears. Sad for Greaves but that's life. Doesn't take away from the fact that Greaves was the BEST BY FAR of any striker who played in the English league and for England overall. I send my best wishes to Jimmy and his family, one hainault boy to another. John Norton..

Interesting comment about him not doing anything for 80% of the time. It is reported that John White, inside right and Ghost of White Hart Lane, once said to Danny Blanchflower during a game that, "Greaves is again standing on the half way line doing nothing."
Blanchflower replied, "...and when you score 40 goals in a season you can stand up there and do nothing with him!".

He is LIGHT YEARS ahead of the rest.......forget Rooney or whoever else as they are no where near Greave's scoring average.

When you look how good Jimmy Greaves was he made putting the ball in the net look so easy. The ability to bring the ball down & hit the target all in one move is poetry in motion, can't think of any British player today that has that gift! No English striker has ever been near him, his record speaks for that. Thanks for all the great memories Jimmy Greaves gave me ,when it was 1 shilling & six to get into the boys at Tottenham. Who do we have in the game today that scored running the length of the pitch dribbling past players at speed & putting the ball in the net? In those days only A great George Best could do it. Jimmy Greaves & Best a 10. Rooney a six .Bale a Seven! Today's market Jimmy would very worth £200.000 million. Would guarantee you at least 25/30 goals a season. He what we need at Tottenham today! +terry kerrison agree with the comparison with Messi, though extraordinary as Jimmy was, I think you have to say Messi is even more so.
Envy you that you were there to witness his astonishing emergence as a teenager at Stamford Bridge. As a Spurs fan I remember gasping at the newsreel clips of his goalscoring feats for Chelsea in those early days. He truly was a sensation the whole footballing world was agog at, the way he just danced through defences with the ball seemingly tied to his feet by an invisible string until all of a sudden the ball would be bouncing in the back of the net before you could fathom how it could possibly have squirmed it's way in there.
I got to witness his magic for myself when he came back from Italy, and was at White Hart Lane that memorable December day he made his Tottenham debut with an amazing hattrick. His second strike, a breath-taking angled scissor-kick from the edge of the box, lives with me to this very day as probably the most extraordinary goal I have ever seen.

Nevertheless, he was one of only three players to get 300+ Div 1 goals. The first was Bloomer in the the first two decades of the 20th Century. The next was Dean in the next two decades, and you then had to wait 30 years for Greaves to break those records and he did it in a shorter time span.
The key point for me is that is that both the first and second Division goal scoring records for a season were set in the 20's, which I think is clear proof that goalscoring was a lot easier in that era. Yet Greaves went against that trend and set a First Div record forty years later that is still standing nearly 50 years on.

I was at an Arsenal away game to Aston Villa in 1960 and after the game (which I believe we lost) the Arsenal team came to Birmingham New Street station to get the train back to London. A crowd of Arsenal fans surrounded the then Arsenal manager George Swindin and asked him him if Arsenal were interested in signing Jimmy Greaves from AC Milan. “No, he’s a troublemaker”, came the reply from Swindin. I’ve never forgotten that statement by him.
Could be that he would have gone to Spurs anyway, but when you think Jimmy played for 3 London clubs(4 if you count Barnet), but never the biggest which Arsenal are, what
    a missed opportunity..
Fabulous player, who along with Duncan Edwards were 2 of the greatest ever English players of all time.

I think he was a better finisher because he was always calm. He never really panicked. He made sure to hang around in areas where something (usually requiring simple direct finishing) could just happen for him. And all that booze helps calm the nerves too. His left footed strikes from the top of the box remind of podolski's!

    • @chrismaynard6016

Logan. Most English forwards past and present freeze when one on one with the keeper, not Jimmy. Cool as you like, Jimmy would nearly always score. Best English striker I have seen since 1963 inc Shearer, Hurst, Charlton, Kane, etc. Like Best, I reckon he would have been fantastic on today's pitches and stand off zonal defending.
