- Tottenham Hotspur had faced the reigning champions, Manchester United, at the beginning of the 1965/66. season. That United side had Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best playing for them, but Spurs weren't pushovers themselves - and the spine of Pat Jennings, Dave Mackay and Jimmy Greaves had managed to produce a marvellous performance. They scored 5 goals before Bobby Charlton secured the final result, and Jimmy Greaves was at the very heart of this victory, making 2 assists and scoring arguably the best goal of that season.

Never seen a better goal scorer than Jimmy Greaves. He had a devastating turn of pace, in and around the penalty area I was privileged to see Jimmy Greaves when he first arrived at Tottenham. When he was on the ball, he electrified and energised the whole Spurs forward line by his surging runs and nimble ball skills. Greaves had that god given ability to score goals out of nothing! He was the supreme opportunist! He will never be forgotten. Thanks Jimmy for giving me, and millions like me, so much pleasure in showing fans what a maestro you were!

Yeah. I have nothing against Hurst but it seems ridiculous that he got knighted before Greaves (or Moore for that matter).
I was there at this game. The brilliant Jimmy Greaves is without doubt the greatest goal scorer this Country has ever produced.

@@caeserromero3013 Ball placement made his corners deadly. Anyone might head one in, but such placement takes someone special. Adds to his greatness the fact he took the corners but not the penalties.

@@scottthefunk Absolutely not! Nothing wrong with being British and proud of it! Jimmy himself wouldn't have shied away from showing patriotism and nor would I! Britain's far from perfect but it still has qualities that make it great
United fan here- I remember watching this on MOTD and Greaves' performance has always stuck in my mind. Great player.
And I can't believe the BBC filmed this- the camerawork was shocking.
I'm a United fan too. I remember it from the radio. That says something I think when it's a radio commentary that stays in your mind.

Nothing wrong with the camerawork - the problem is in the edit. For example, the build up to Greaves' classic goal isn't shown.
@@elspencer6334 The camerawork is absolutely shocking- cameras are getting too close and then having to pan quickly to keep up with the action.
@@peezebeuponyou3774 Only shocking by today's standard, at the time we just accepted it, the picture quality has suffered over time.
Greaves struck up a brilliant understanding with Cliff Jones and later with Alan Gilzean, who were sometimes called in the press, ''the ‘G men.’ Greaves was a unique and amazing talented forward who became a goal scoring machine. To say he was a deadly goal scorer in and around the penalty area is a classic understatement! He scored a hat trick in his first game for Spurs against Blackpool. From then on, he never stopped scoring goals!

Those were the days. My first game was 2 years later with most of this team playing. Looking at this match shows you just how much of a creator Jimmy was. The combination with Gilzean was a sight to behold. Slick football.
He was a pain in the arse for scoring against united . But a great pain in the arse . I was at that game greaves tore us apart . I suppose the only comfort after this hammering is united did the same to spurs a few months after . But spurs and united were always the big game. Bobby Charlton scored uniteds only goal at white Hart Lane and it was one of his specials .
My wife and I, attended this match and saw that amazing goal. Simply the best.
That 3rd goal was all the more amazing for the players he beat, which included Nobby Stiles and Tony Dunne. In another game, at Old Trafford, Nobby was up Greaves' shirt the whole game but Greaves still scored. I had a good view of it. Nobby was no more than 3 feet away but Jimmy coolly stuck it in from close range. A great tussle between a magnificent defender and the greatest goalscorer.

He even took corners with both feet. 1:03 with his left foot and 1:51 with his right foot. What a player

I was there!! I think that this was the game that Ron Henry scored his one and only goal for Spurs. Later in the season in the return match Manchester United beat Spurs at Old Tr afford by exactly the same score 5-1...

Better striker than Kane and I rate Kane a lot; better overall player than Haaland with comparable goalscoring instincts. Certainly higher than £100m.

He certainly did. Sometimes it gets forgotten behind his (outstanding) goalscoring record that he was also a fantastic footballer.

That's the Pyramid - the standard formation when football was first starting to really resemble football as we know it now. It fell out of favour generally from the 1930's after a big change to the offside law brought about the success of the W-M (partly because of the extra defender). Four man defences then became popular in the sixties, I believe after the Brazil '58 and '62 teams were so successful. All of this was happening on the actual pitch, but the old boys who ran the BBC insisted on displaying the team-sheets in the old pyramid style no matter what, based only on shirt numbers, at least until after the '66 World Cup (I don't know exactly when or why they stopped to be honest).
I'll confess I don't know, but I suspect Brown and Mackay were the centre backs on the day and Mullery was in front of them in midfield, probably with Clayton (?) as a 4-2-4.
That doesn't mean they played that formation. It was just conventional to show a team set out that way on TV and match programmes.

There was no one else like him, before or since. I was at the game in the video, my first visit to White Hart Lane with my Dad. Fantastic day, I'll never forget it.
