I never understood how singing was supposed to lure men to their deaths at sea, but here I am entranced by Malinda's voice like a moth to flame. I could listen to her sing until I forget time
Now imagine after a couple of weeks of nothing but shipboard monotony (as voyages should be, exciting voyages usually aren't good ones and end poorly) you hear a beautiful feminine voice faintly singing not too far in the distance, but its dark so you can't see where its coming from. No lights, no ship silhouetted against the stars/moon, just a wonderful singing. Now tell me would you want to check it out, I would. Sirens a manifestation from the mind of early sailors told in the ports and retold again and again after returning from a "long" trip (long being out of sight of land at this point in time) and who wants to hear about "well we left 8 days ago, stood watch, on day 4 it got a little breezy so we shortened sail, Bob stubbed his toe, and Jim fell over on day 6 after we saw some odd patches of sea weed"....
U are speaking of the Greek sirens they used their power of singing to luer men at sea in promise of sex only to use their souls as a meal and left the husk of flesh the man once was in the ocean and moved on to the next poor soul foolish enough to come within ear shot of their song. The voices of both girls and men are great. The female vocals, though softer, resemble motifs from the film Dune, in which the extreme wasteland and the mystery of mirages reign supreme. At the same time, male vocals immerse you in the time of the Vikings and you can feel the power, struggle and freedom at the same time. But when it comes together in unison, it is difficult even to convey impressions in words. It's something from another world. I really liked it and would like to say thank you for your efforts.
LYRICS (Verse 1) The king and his men Stole the queen from her bed And bound her in her bones. The seas be ours And by the powers Where we will, we'll roam (Chorus) (Repeat x2) Yo ho, all together Hoist the colours high. Heave ho, thieves and beggars Never shall we die. (Verse 2) Some men have died And some are alive And others sail on the sea. With the keys to the cage And the Devil to pay We lay to Fiddler's Green. (Chorus) Yo ho, all together Hoist the colours high. Heave ho, thieves and beggars Never shall we die. (Verse 3) The bell has been raised From it's watery grave. Do you hear its sepulchral tone? We call to all Pay head the squall And turn your sail toward home! (Chorus) (Repeat x2) Yo ho, all together Hoist the colours high. Heave ho, thieves and beggars Never shall we die.
Last summer my wife and I were anchored in the bay on the set where Pirates was filmed for a few nights. I played this tune every night and drank a toast of rum.
I definitely agree and I listen to this almost always when I go sleeping. I really like Colm's voice but Lauren shocked me at 2:30. I think this four people are one of the most talented in the world❤️
Lauren: The siren singing you to your doom Malinda: The wench at port who can share many a story from the sea Colm: The deckhand who'd save your life in a battle Bobby: The one who ushers your soul across the river once the sea relinquishes its hold on you
Jesus saith unto him I am the way the truth and the life no man cometh unto the Father but by me John 14:6 Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the heathen. I will be exalted in the earth. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth upon him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Matthew 16:24 King James Version 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
I like to imagine that this is a ghost ship where Malinda and Lauren are the sirens that lured Bobby and Colm to their death. And now they're all sailing across the seas luring others to their death with this song beautifully and also very eerily.
This hymn has its roots in Celtics lore, probably sang long before the idea of instruments for music. Acapella allows you to here the vocal range, its angelic. They're great 👍
Hans Zimmer wrote this song for the At the World's End pirates movie. Definitely inspired by that, but I haven't found any proof of it existing before that. I was searching for where it came from but that's all I found 😭
When I say I have never gotten chills to a song before, I mean that literally. I don't know what it was about this song but I got chills. By far the best arrangement of this song out there. Quite possibly the best song I have ever heard.
Agreed. I know Voiceplay just covered this song, too, and I just can’t help it. I LOVE Voiceplay, but theirs isn’t as good. It’s just too…produced and on-tune? It’s no where as impressive and haunting as this one. 👍🏻
Aww, man. You need to start branching out. Getting chills from a song like this, or orchestral, or even from a movie, a game, is the most amazing feeling ever. Puts me in the rigth spot when I put something on that brings chills. Enjoy a nice little joint and some whisky at the same time - my guilty pleasure :)
I haven't heard the full story in a long time, so correct me if I'm wrong- but this song is about Calypso, a lady who literally *was* the sea. "The king and his men stole the queen from her bed, and bound her in her bones" is talking about how a king (at some point or another) trapped the spirit of the ocean in a woman's body, creating Calypso. She was trapped on an island and barely anyone figured out what she was. In this version of the story Davy Jones fell in love with "the woman as wild as the sea". However, he had to leave her for 10 years, and when he came back he wasn't the same as she remembered. He had turned into the character shown in POTC now. As far as I know, the rest of the song is about a group of pirates rescuing and freeing Calypso. In the movie it is sung by a bunch of people who were accused of being pirates as a protest. Very powerful moment, totally deserving of an equally powerful arrangement :D -Fialeja put lyrics to Davy Jones' theme as well and HOLY COW IT'S GOOD. Highly recommend Myrani and BiggsTheMighty's cover for more chills. I'd also recommend some of the virtual choirs done by The Longest Johns, very very well done. Sorry for the wall of text :P
As a dude working onboard a ship sailing across the biggest seas, this song fits perfectly specially when we encounter waves high enough to match the bridge of a ship. And in top of it all, we work, sleep and eat as if the waves Don't bother us as if it is the most normal thing..
Notice how the female voice gives you a feeling of injustice/sadness/misfortune While the male voice gives an uprising/revenge/enough is enough kinda feeling It’s amazing to me. I am talking about only this song and by no means consider women as inferior to men. It’s just their voice textures naturally represent certain emotions. Awesome performance!
I am singing along with this song I have loved for a long time. I had thought the Pure Bass version could not be bettered…. But the literal tears in my eyes and the swelling in my throat have proved me wrong. I have not teared up for music in some time now…. This is beauty in the form of sound… Just Wow.
I started to listen to this on my computer speakers then immediately had to go grab my headphones to hear everything. Such amazing harmonies and melodies. All the voices match together very well. Awesome video!
This is amazing. Unlike alot of other versions which are epic themes, or hope inspiring tunes. This version is haunting like the song was supposed to be when sung by the child in the film. I liken this to Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence.
I work at a haunted attraction with a pirate themed section, I can only imagine how dope it would be to have all the actors enter the zone in the dark with tons of fog singing this song??? Ooof
@@christopherorta8755 but what did it serve Lord Cutler Beckett in the end, to maltreat and to execute all those people just for associating with pirates never mind being them? (A prompt as payment for this lovely cover) The admiral looked out at what was once his prized fleet, now rendered to flaming hulks of wood and steel. Two thirds of his men are either dead or dying, his ship the only one left standing. His first mate was shouting orders to the remaining crew, urging them to get to their battle stations. The Admiral then looked out past the wreckage to see three ships closing in, one faster than the others. The Banshee, who's captain he once called his love, glared at him with a flare that would cause Davy Jones himself to quiver in his place. She held no love for him, no pitty, only unyielding rage, for nothing, not even hell itself, had fury like a woman scorned....
Calypso's Curse. For they bound her in mortal form for Davy Jones told them how to do it. For only a man of pure heart and pure love can release her from her bond.
Fiddler's Green, the afterlife for all sailors. One of the oldest afterlife concepts out there. I always loved the fact that the idea of Fiddler's Green lives on mostly through sea shanties.
Not all Fiddler's Green tales are in sea shanties, some countries cavalry units have there own version. Don't know if your aware or not, but wanted to bring it to your attention.
In school choir we learned "Wrap me up in me oilskins and jumper, no more on the docks I'll be seen, just tell me ol shipmates I'm talking a trip mates and I'll see you someday in Fiddlers Green"
Some things I like abt the song: 1. I could listen to this ANYDAY. It's SOOOO calming! 2. The voices lap over eachother. Lauren and Malinda's sound so similar, I can barely recognize who is who. Colm's is really deep, so Bobby's voice laps over Colm's. 3. I'd be lured instantly. Colm's voice give me chills, while I could fall asleep to any song Lauren, Malinda, and Bobby sing. That's it. I mean in POTC it's a war cry for the ungoverned sea faring, the last hope as their people are slaughtered. This song is the final call to fight or die.

I really liked it and would like to say thank you for your efforts.
this kinda sharp C# by Lauren, that creeps in like an overtone at 2:50 makes this rendition so much more spicy and haunting, its AMAZING! Good work.
Not just Lauren, Crom sings a C# too. It sounds great.

LYRICS
(Verse 1)
The king and his men
Stole the queen from her bed
And bound her in her bones.
The seas be ours
And by the powers
Where we will, we'll roam
(Chorus) (Repeat x2)
Yo ho, all together
Hoist the colours high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die.
(Verse 2)
Some men have died
And some are alive
And others sail on the sea.
With the keys to the cage
And the Devil to pay
We lay to Fiddler's Green.
(Chorus)
Yo ho, all together
Hoist the colours high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die.
(Verse 3)
The bell has been raised
From it's watery grave.
Do you hear its sepulchral tone?
We call to all
Pay head the squall
And turn your sail toward home!
(Chorus) (Repeat x2)
Yo ho, all together
Hoist the colours high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die.
Thank you

I like to imagine that this is a ghost ship where Malinda and Lauren are the sirens that lured Bobby and Colm to their death. And now they're all sailing across the seas luring others to their death with this song beautifully and also very eerily.
The Sirens and Viking have banded together once again🎉
2:50 gives me massive chills with the erie high harmony and the basses is **chefs kiss** amazing

Very powerful moment, totally deserving of an equally powerful arrangement :D
-Fialeja put lyrics to Davy Jones' theme as well and HOLY COW IT'S GOOD. Highly recommend Myrani and BiggsTheMighty's cover for more chills. I'd also recommend some of the virtual choirs done by The Longest Johns, very very well done.
Sorry for the wall of text :P
This is the most beautiful rendition I've ever heard of this. And it's a beautiful song anyway. It really moves the soul. ❤
As a dude working onboard a ship sailing across the biggest seas, this song fits perfectly specially when we encounter waves high enough to match the bridge of a ship. And in top of it all, we work, sleep and eat as if the waves Don't bother us as if it is the most normal thing..
dang okay XD
Is it normal to get emotional from people singing so beautifully?😭
For me, yes it is.
Yes :)
It's totally normal.
Notice how the female voice gives you a feeling of injustice/sadness/misfortune
While the male voice gives an uprising/revenge/enough is enough kinda feeling
It’s amazing to me.
I am talking about only this song and by no means consider women as inferior to men. It’s just their voice textures naturally represent certain emotions.
Awesome performance!
I am a woman and I think your comment is accurate and true. No offense taken at all.

I think it was!
@@anneglossop8521 but this version would be very haunting in VR
It was sung at the beginning of "At World's End" during a mass execution of pirates at Port Royal being overseen by Lord Cutler Beckett himself.
@@christopherorta8755 but what did it serve Lord Cutler Beckett in the end, to maltreat and to execute all those people just for associating with pirates never mind being them? The admiral looked out at what was once his prized fleet, now rendered to flaming hulks of wood and steel.

Fiddler's Green, the afterlife for all sailors. One of the oldest afterlife concepts out there. I always loved the fact that the idea of Fiddler's Green lives on mostly through sea shanties.

Fiddlers green the resting place of soldiers and sailors. "For if I fall under saber keen you'll find me there at fiddlers green"
