Your LOTR songs have that unique vibe of mighty ancient civilisations that never existed, but feel so real. Thank you, Colm!
I think it’s partly the Irish lilt coming through paired with the richness of his voice, plus he just nails the instrumental parts too!
And i think the cover is extremely dope, that is my contribution to your comment 😅
Tolkien drew heavily from European history, myth, and legend. It gives his world a sense of vast depth that most other worldbuilding lacks.
They exist deep in our ancestral memories, in ancient legends and histories of dark days and golden ages...
I honestly believe some authors build worlds not just story’s. , you could ask tolkin anything about anywhere in his world and he could tell you who lives there and what they do without looking at his notes
,
Terry pratchet is similar
Gentlemen!! Wow!!
As a professional metal singer, and vocal coach, I just gotta say....... ummmm..... I think the very bones just melted out of my body!
* YOUR voices are the ones I've always heard, in my head, for all these many years, when I read about the dwarves singing in Moria. Outstanding!
The Clamavi de Profundis version is dear to my heart but this is great. Love it.
Yeah, that one is perfect.
I was hoping they'd be mentioned here! This is clearly their melody for the song too
Aye that’s true.
@High-LordHarza they're mentioned in the description tbf.
@@matthewberry8516 Yeah I noticed after commenting xP
I’ve wanted to say this for a long time, because I felt it, but I was able to formulate it only now:
the voices blend so well because they seem to embrace everything. Bobby's voice is pure art, it's hard to believe that he can sound so academic and captivating, as if hugging you with velvet. Jonathan's voice is like the power of the nature's elements - it is something from thunder and wind, storm and crashing waves. and Colm’s voice for me personally is a man in all his feelings, from tenderness in love and laughter in joy to combat rage and deep sorrow.
Dear God, I want to listen to you guys forever.
🤩😍🤩😍🤩😍 you are the bests
The lyrics, for anyone who wants a copy posted here:
The world was young, the mountains green,
No stain yet on the Moon was seen,
No words were laid on stream or stone
When Durin woke and walked alone.
He named the nameless hills and dells;
He drank from yet untasted wells;
He stooped and looked in Mirrormere,
And saw a crown of stars appear,
As gems upon a silver thread,
Above the shadows of his head.
The world was fair, the mountains tall,
In Elder Days before the fall
Of mighty kings in Nargothrond
And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin's Day.
A king he was on carven throne
In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor,
And runes of power upon the door.
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
There shone for ever fair and bright.
There hammer on the anvil smote,
There chisel clove, and graver wrote;
There forged was blade, and bound was hilt;
The delver mined, the mason built.
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
And metal wrought like fishes' mail,
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
And shining spears were laid in hoard.
Unwearied then were Durin's folk;
Beneath the mountains music woke:
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
And at the gates the trumpets rang.
The world is grey, the mountains old,
The forge's fire is ashen-cold;
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls:
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls;
The shadow lies upon his tomb
In Moria, in Khazad-dûm.
But still the sunken stars appear
In dark and windless Mirrormere;
There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.
Many many thanks!!!
Thank you, hero.
Bless you, O mighty bard!
Cheers bud!
Thanks a bunch
Gentlemen your voices achieve the miracle of making us part of the Durin's folk and feeling with them the sorrow for the days long past !
Sadness yet hope for "when Durin wakes again from sleep" .
Glorious !
A couple months after my daughter was born last year I decided to memorize this poem to sing as I rocked her to sleep. Singing this song still helps her calm down when she is having a hard time.
Great pick,
I sang my daughter Misty Mountains the whole night she was born, 10 years later she still asks for it to sleep.
I did the same whem my daughter born 3 years ago.
Cringe.
Go learn more, I now have most of Tolkien's songs memorized, mostly for singing to my daughter as she falls asleep. Recommend the song of earendil, or the song of beren and luthien next!
@@anxietyonline1947shut it
My soon 9 year old autistic son and 3.5year old daughter listened this song and they loved it. Son listened quietly and patiently and daughter said "i like this, it's a good song."
Sometimes, plain awed silence and quiet recognition are the highest praise :)
Ok, be real… WHO saw this coming?
Also drop your dwarven name below?
Also before anyone asks, Bobby did the subharmonic at the end! 🤌
Thrarin Ironbeard
Throgrim Stonefist
Barundin Dragonheart
My last name already means stone mason, so that's covered. I suppose Jorgrin or Jogrun or something to that effect.
No one saw that coming and you know that and are laughting in your evil villin voice now

Just remember... it all goes back to Tolkien
All dwarven music needs to be performed by basses. These three gentlemen transport me to Khazad-dum and Gimli reciting/singing this for the Fellowship. Absolutely phenomenal, making me feel a deep sense of loss for a time and place that never were.
Very well said.
I understand why you would say that, but...do you know Eurielle's cover of this song?
I was just reading that part the other day (not for the first nor last time), and then I found this!
Tolkien did such a good job worldbuilding a people who's golden age had come and long gone, and of portraying the deep heartbreak of those that still lived. I get misty whenever I hear Durin's song.
I know! Like when I listen to this song I mourn for an age that I never saw nor was apart of in a world that doesn’t exist, his world building is so incredible that he took into account that a civilization that fell would have songs about their golden age
I agree completely. The dwarves that still live in Tolkien's world must know that their civilization is just a pale shadow of what it once was.
Well said.
Well, he was English, so.....
The three of you singing this song is so soothing that it gets its own playlist so that I can listen to it on repeat while I go to sleep.
As a bass-baritone, this makes me so happy. I have CHILLS. Three certifiable bass singers combining forces and delivering an incredible performance. Props to all of you!
Imagine adding the warhorn and theatbassguy, ohhh man.. I'd love to see a colab with geoff andthe bassguy. the ground would shake and the skies would split.

Мощно и также очень мелодично. Бобби бесподобен , очень красочный и сочный голос.
This gives me chills. Literally sounds like its being sung in a deep, vast cavern with perfect acoustics. . .as it would be with a dwarven choir
The manliest of operas, period.
In my opinion, there is nothing sexier than deep bass, baritone voices. Damn. 💜
Even just a bass speaking voice is sexy
Indeed why i persued voice acting. I Can first hand confirm that there is a wild reaction when we low bass voice actors speak.

Man, I remeber when Song of Durin first came out. It was such a great song. Listened to it so many times, this Bass cover is really awesome.
Really? You were there in the UK on July 29th, 1954? I tip my hat to you.
@@R9500pro1 Song of Durin is a poem by Tolkien. Clamavi de Profundis sang its song version and created the melody for it.
@@Cragified Yes, a poem sang by Gimli in Tolkien's book: The Fellowship of the Ring. Thus it "came out" nearly 70 years ago.
@@R9500pro1 i think i found the redditor among us
He called it a SONG. The poem, yes, came out in 1954. And was written way before that because Tolkien famously started writing LOTR specifically even before WW2, got stuck somewhere (I think Balin's tomb) and only finished in 1954/55. But the SONG (aka that thing with both words and MUSIC) came out a few years back when Clamavi de Profundis were the first ones to actually sing it and then publish the result. @@R9500pro1
Des voix profondes, graves et chaudes, qui glorifient l'amour de la patrie, de son peuple. C'est un hymne national à son identité.❤️
I'm addicted to this. I need to hear it at least once a day. ❤
"The shadow lies upon his tomb, in Moria, in Khazad-dûm" I don’t know why but this lines always make me cry in any version of the song, and Bobby sang it so beautifully i felt my heart miss a beat ❤
The whole last "verse" makes me tear up. I have no idea why, but it does. Every dang time. 😢
@@gracehulbert7867Because even though it’s a civilization that never existed, that sense of loss is palpable in the last few verses and that connects with the sense of loss that we have all experienced at times in our lives.
Just as the dwarves look back at their lost golden age and yearn for those days that they can never have again we all have lost someone that we can look back and yearn for the days we spent with them in a golden age of our own that we can never get back.

Восторг от услышанного! Какие талантливые мужчины и фантастичные голоса!
Johnathans voice at 1:37 is insane. His bass tamber is crazy good and amazing. Which he’d sing down there more often
His voice works so well for this type of music it really is a shame he spends all his time making terrible (imo) metal covers of songs that should never touch the metal genre.
@@TheUnseenHobohe does a good job wym 😂 you just a hater
@@TheUnseenHobo That is how he built that career he has. I prefer him singing his original songs but he never misses with his covers. He always does them justice or makes them better simply by virtue of his voice and production skills. Would I love for him to sing like this all the time? Absolutely. He has the voice of a thunder god and it's a joy to hear him like this. But I would never call what he does a waste of his time and I have yet to hear anything terrible from him.
The assortment of voices is incredible! Colm's multi-colored dishomogeneous uniqueness, Jonathan's dark smokier sound and Bobby's noble elegance that could easily fit a classic context.
I'm an absolute sucker for bass voices and I'm spoiled rotten for choice here. You guys are amazing, all 3 of you, I wouldn't know who to choose if I had to pick a favorite. I'm mesmerized by the sheer beauty of Bobby's voice (reminds me of Christopher Lee's at times), but Jonathan's charisma is just impossible to ignore and finally the distinctiveness of such a particular tone makes Colm the perfect match for the other two
They need to rope in Geoff Castelucci to form a truly epic bass quartet.
"...Colm's multi-colored dishomogeneous uniqueness, Jonathan's dark smokier sound and Bobby's noble elegance..." - I couldn´t have expressed it better...!
I have oft thought of a way to describe Jonathan's voice...smoky hits it dead-on!
Stunning, absolutely beautiful. There are two people who have inspired me to be a bass singer, Geoff Castelluci and Colm McGuinness. Keep up your amazing work
They totally need to rope in Geoff and make an epic fantasy bass quartet.
@LanChioPeng BRO YES!!!!
I for one would love the four of them to sing gregorian chant for a 40k-themed MV. They are quite possibly the closest thing we will ever hear to a choir of Space Marines.
@@LanChiaoPengHELL YES!!!
Absolutely! Especially because Geoff's bass sounds VERY different to how Colm's does. Colm's is sharp and at least sounds to me almost "chokey", he's making it in the back of his mouth, I think. While Geoff mainly has a rounder, fuller tone that feels smooth (not counting subharmonics). @@LanChiaoPeng
I wish Tolkien could’ve heard this. I think he’d probably be very happy and enjoy this.
Tolkien was a bigoted jackwagon. The songs from the movies weren't anything like the music he liked. If he hadn't had fever delusions in WW1, The Lord of the Rings wouldn't exist nor would any of his other great works. How about we living people love this and other songs from Colm. At least that way he gets paid.
I write now my first fantasy epos - and yes - it would move him to tears. There is nothing more beautiful for an author than to see his work outlive him and to inspire people to interpret it themselves.
He's singing it, all of them are Tolkien believe or not. 😂
He's woken from his sleep, and he's back the man in black.
tbh prolly has
I dare say Tolkien would shed tears of pride and joy at seeing such a powerful and wonderful work of art
Finally, the youtube recommendations showing something worthy of listening. I recently did a re binge watch of both Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This song couldn't have arrived at a better time. What a masterpiece, you gentlemen have made, thank you for making my day better! This kind of music and singing should be promoted way more than other genres, but that is just my opinion. May God bless you with a long life and good health so you can enchant people for many years to come.
Can you stop please? I watched this video over 200 times, and still can't stop. Amazing voices!
The tone and vocal changes by Colm is magical.
I are old and demented. I remembered that this song evolved from a number of older songs but what I remembered was from 2012 which isn't old at all. 🤤 I like how he includes an undertone of throat singing which most people can't do.
Colm and Bobby sound like expert Bards telling a tale.
Young sounds like he was actually there and is reliving the memory to impart knowledge to a group around a great fire.
Well done. Well done all!
I love how Bobby's voice gets more refined with every song he's in. You can hear the progress he's made. It's absolutely amazing to watch. Colm and Jonathan are incredible as always. Such a killer cover, lads.
Genuinely one of the greatest pieces of music ever. I keep coming back to this, lilkely listened to it hundreds of times over the past month alone. As a LotR Fan and a huge fan of all 3 artists here... just a match made in Valinor

There’s something about the Dwarves that remembers better days, yet unlike the Elves hold out hope that better days will come again.
And that feels so much more human, to our deep delving kin!
🍺
Well Dwarves are more "down to earth" ;D !
But yes I do agree with what you said, Elves are like the " role model student" , although fascinating, beautifull and loyal, their un-aging and viewing themselves as the best race ( for most of them) is what makes them slightly less relatable to us humans, whilst the Dwarves while Blunt and not the most polite folk in the outerlayer are deep down more complex than one may think, at least they were...
Also unlike Elves they benefit from long life spans yes but eventually even they will wither and die..their pleasure for more daily things such as good food & booze makes them somewhat relatable and their shorter yet sturdy stature making them a bit clumsy is also a characteristic that somewhat lightens the mood in some darker moments !
Elves are the favoured firstborn of creation, whereas Dwarves are the unexpected byblows that survived against the odds to flourish. They are dour, defiant, take no shit, and grab hold of what they want with both hands.
Definitely kindred souls to us lowly Manfolk.
Wow wow wow, I'm at a loss for words, so mesmerising, deep and moving!
There is nothing that sounds as good as a deep bass. This song gives me shivers down through my spine. And I LOVE IT!
While not the lowest voice to my knowledge, the fullness and quality to Young's voice stands out again and again to me.
