- Welcome to my Summer 2020 Newsletter! This season has seen incredibly difficult times and challenges that we could not have even imagined…but we are doing our best to stay strong. I count my blessings every day and I’m happy to be alive and a part of a growing community.
This season I have taken pride in building a FREE Masterclass series on Zoom that has amassed over 6,000 people from all over the world, and given them an opportunity to sing, learn, coach, and hear from many professionals in the field. These Masterclasses have become the apple of my eye, and I am so happy to have the platform to share music in this new way. Please sign up for them, if you have not, at bit.ly/lomasterclass
I’ve also been privileged to perform in multiple online galas and livestreams, as well as hang on to my hope of getting to return to the stage very soon. This July I’ll be singing 4 performances of LA TRAVIATA in Madrid, and a Rossini gala at the Arena di Verona. Most excitingly of all, this August I will make my first ever recording of arias with orchestra! I can’t wait to share more about it with you all when the time is right.
→ REFLECTIONS:
Please keep me and all artists in your prayers and efforts this year. 2020 has served up unprecedented challenges for not just artists, but anyone whose life is linked to the theatre, to performance, and to gatherings of human beings in a single space.
Though I am happy to have the internet and all the connectedness of it, I don’t think the venue of the “virtual” will ever replace the in-person experience of live theatre. There is something to be said for the sense of ensemble, of listening to your colleagues and leaning on them when you make music together.
Please know that we all miss the stage, and we are waiting every day with baited breath till the chance presents itself to go back to it. We miss you, and our art form will never be the same without the real you.

Gracias por venir a España, a Madrid a cantar La Traviata en pleno mes de julio, con el teatro extrañamente compartimentado y con un aforo limitado por culpa de ésta terrible pandemia. Has dejado atrás seguro muchos planes para poder venir éstos días y participar en ésta Traviata que es el renacer del Teatro Real y ese esfuerzo que has hecho es algo que te agradezco enormemente.
Son tiempos muy difíciles los que estamos atravesando, en todo el mundo y en España especialmente y es un soplo de aire fresco, una inyección de esperanza el poder escucharte de nuevo en el Teatro Real.
Soy médico de urgencias y no sabes cuanta energía positiva me da cada día escucharte cantar.

The voice has always been gorgeous, with brightness in the upper register and extraordinary flexibility throughout. But your lower extension has taken on added dimension and character. Oh whatever. Después de un confinamiento largo y difícil, va a ser un soplo de aire fresco poder volver a escucharte en vivo! El Teatro Real me ha dado entradas en sustitución de las que había comprado hace meses, para el día 22. Llevo a dos amigos cubano-españoles como yo, mi médico, que es como mi hermano, y su esposa, que también canta. Ellos estuvieron conmigo en Lucía y quedaron tan entusiasmados con tu voz como yo. Me alegro tanto de que nadie se haya enfermado en tu familia. Ojalá vuelva todo a su cauce y podamos verte a menudo en diversas producciones por toda Europa. Que Dios os bendiga y si escuchas bien, el 22 oirás mi Bravo más alto que los demás!! :-)
Saw La Traviata last night in El Real (22nd July). What a treat! You were superb, Lisette. In these months since I last saw you in Milan, your voice has matured, especially in the middle-low registers, honing that string-like quality slightly varnished by the color of the woodwinds. The breath control is breath-taking (no pun intended! :-), emulating that of the assoluta queen of those, Caballé. Your legato, flawless; your tuning, perfect; your voice always above the orchestra, and in the fortes, surpassing the orchestra (which is hard even for strong singers!). And the dramatic intensity making this masterpiece border on verismo, which it did in its day, without overdoing it like so many bad actors and actresses usually do, especially in the death scene. I feel replenished and overwhelmed. A new confinement may come--will probably come--and who knows what life has in store for us, especially at my age. But I can say that I have heard one of the truly best singers of the 21st century. Gracias.
