“Do I dare disturb the Universe?” Tolstoy asked. We cannot. A friend of mine walked home from the bar 10 years ago and was struck by a sober couple on their way to work.
His decision to walk that night was the direct result of having lost one of our friends to drinking and driving some years before.
      RIP David “Prego” Pregerson.

thank you Dr Todd. My daughter was killed by an angry drunk in 2001. The woman got 4 years. Bekah lost her life and her loved ones lost her. her killer ended up getting out of prison after a little over 2 years. It was a hit and run, no skid marks, wrong side of the road. She was charged with murder and then allowed to plea for only a 4 year sentence. I remember the day the prosecutor told us about the plea deal. It was like they were killing my daughter all over again. Quite literally the 2nd worst day of my life.

I have a friend who had two children, and her husband was struck and killed by a young drunk driver who fled the scene, and never called the police. It was estimated that had she called for rescue, he might have survived, but she waited hours and then showed up with her mother. They claimed she had wine after she got home to calm her nerves, but most people knew they had contacted a lawyer to make up such a claim to cover for her drunk driving. She was not arrested, and within days of killing him was posting on FB about going out and drinking and partying. Needless to say she eventually took such posts down. She never served a single day in jail for killing a good husband and father to two children who will never know who he was.

But still, most people would be in shock after having hit two people, let alone one...and having a severed leg from one of those people lodged in the grill of her car. She must have seen that as the video clearly shows. One could say initial shock might lead someone to deny hitting anyone...but...we see she said "person hit me", which is a very telling choice of words.

Weak judges impose weak sentences. And there's a lot of judges who unfortunately have poor judgement & shouldn't be on the stand. They don't have the brains or the spine to impose what is truly a just sentence for a particular defendant & take the easy way out from making the tough but necessary decisions in regards to sentencing & use the "sentencing guidelines" as a way out from making those tough but necessary decisions.
This woman showed a callous attitude, no remorse and she disrespected the court at arraignment & during trial.
A judge must determine the defendants ability to be rehabilitated & this woman showed no responsibility or remorse for her actions.
That should've led the judge to impose much more than whatever the "guidelines" are which are usually in between the minimum & maximum sentence. A judge with proper discernment should've leaned much more toward the maximum because of the callous way she behaved. If I were the judge weighing the choice between a minimum & 28 max, I would've have told her that her callous disregard for the law & her victim leaves this court to impose a sentence of 24 years behind bars.
The court must also weigh her past record & I believe that's her only conviction. That should be a factor in not imposing the full maximum so I would take off 4 years from the max for a clean record but add 10 years to the "sentencing guideline" of 14 years for her callous lack of remorse for her actions & the victim. That is sort of like an aggravated circumstance in imposing those 10 additional years from 14 to 24 years.
With my truly "just" sentence, she would spend 16 years behind bars before eligibility for parole. She's too callous & immature to be paroled in 6 years when she's still only going to be 29. That will not be enough time to rehabilitate such an immature, sick & callous human being. She will most likely get out & go back to partying & driving under the influence & causing more death, harm or injury.
I used to practice law & have a law degree. I've seen too many immature, addicted & callous people like her get light sentences & early parole & go back to being menaces to society. Over 90% of the people with her problems never learn from a light sentence & what sickens me is that these weak judges who impose these weak sentences are aware of this!
      It's a sickening outrage.

And there's too many weak prosecutor's & too many corrupt & politically motivated prosecutors and that's a symptom & a result of having a voter base/majority that has poor judgement & is politically motivated.
Remember, trial judges & local & state prosecutor's get elected by majority vote by the people.
People rightly complain about the injustices of the justice system but these biased & lousy judges & DA"s are bring elected & reelected by the voting majority.

Honestly I’m relieved that some people get more than 11 years for DV since abuse cases generally get a slap on the wrist here. I agree though, that she deserves a much harsher punishment. Our society infantilized young adults. Judges worry about them ‘getting out while they are still young.’ I’ve never been arrested but I think if your actions injure or kill someone, it shouldn’t matter very much if it was an accident or intentional. Many states have a max punishment of 25 years for DUIs that result in death. She should have gotten 25 years for each. People need to see young people with their whole lives ahead of them, spend it in prison for egregious actions like this. Many people have driven buzzed when they were young because it’s not treated seriously enough. I was hit by someone who was intoxicated at a young age (I was on foot, and only had some broken ribs thankfully), but it taught me not to do that. If we stop worrying about young perp’s futures more than the victims they create, then maybe this won’t be such a normal young adult experience.

Deaths resulting from DUI don’t qualify for First and Second degree murder. They do qualify for Third degree homicide/manslaughter though. The differences in the offenses are as follows: first degree murder is premeditated and you had a motive to kill the other person. Second degree murders means you had a motive, but the killing wasn’t premeditated. Third degree homicide/manslaughter is a death that occurs as a result of preventable negligence. You killed someone and you must be held accountable of course, but the death wasn’t premeditated and there was no motive. You just did something stupid and preventable and somebody ended up dead. Considering that in most states, the sentence for manslaughter per person killed is 7-10 years, the sentence of 14 years is not abnormal. She’s also a woman. As we know already know, women receive less prison time compared to men for the same equivalent crimes.
Make no mistake. Her life is pretty messed up. She’s a felon. Whatever she was going to school for will be practically useless when she gets out due to the passage of time. Because of her felon status, she may not be able to work in that field anyway. She went from being a college student to being stuck in prison for the next 14 years with hardened criminals and real sociopaths/psychopaths. But I can’t say I feel sorry for her. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not drink and drive. Call a friend. Call a family member. Or just SIT STILL until you're SOBER and can safely operate a vehicle. All it takes is ONE ERROR...it doesn't have to be major ,just a half second of looking away, JUST ONE time, to destroy someone's life. Your life. The families and friends and communities of EVERYONE involved.
And , believe me , first responders never forget. Each and every scene is permanently emblazoned in our memory. We hold people while they pass away. We try to keep injured people stable on scene with all our might. On Life Flights, ambulance rides, and we PRAY the entire time.
We hold parents, sisters, brothers, grandparents, and children of the people injured and of those that are going to jail.

I personally have a combination of being socialized to not show emotions as a male and diminished empathy for others due to neglect as a child. Even though I may feel kinda numb about this case, I do feel empathy that this had to happen to a couple that were probably just having a good night together, and I hope their final moments were the best they could have had. But that's also coming from empathy I have learned to have for others. That said, some people have never learned how to have empathy or how to have remorse for their actions, which I assume mostly comes from how you're treated in early childhood. I had a uncle years ago that was sober and a nine year old boy rode into the street, fortunately my uncle was going only 25 mph in a 30 mph zone and both he and the boy swerved but the boys leg was still broken in two places. The young boy healed and everything was okay after his recovery but that has stayed with my uncle big time, from nightmares, night sweats and symptoms on PTSS. He was sober but like you said most people are just horrified by the thought of accidentally hitting or hurting anyone much less a child and this woman didn’t care that she killed two people. I understand praying 🙏🏼 that while driving you never want to hit a pedestrian or another vehicle and that’s while sober, I’ll never understand driving drunk especially knowing how it’s so preventable but like the Doc said some people have traits that lead them to be so reckless, however her lack of empathy was astounding and scary because I see that in more and more young people. My prayers are with the families of the victims, she has no clue just how many lives she’s destroyed and that’s counting her own family. The police officer was correct when he said she was pathetic, seeing the full camera video is truly disgusting.

Traffic accidents are just like warfare on the streets. Of course, the movies rarely, if ever, actually show what happens if a grenade goes off by someone or if someone gets shot. TV and the movies show whole people being heaved up on a trampoline from the grenade or a spot or two of blood from a gunshot (old TV programs never even showed any blood -- they were magic bullets). It's John Wayne getting shot in the shoulder and declaring, "Gosh, Pilgrim, It's just a flesh wound" as he cocks his Winchester with the other arm to return fire. In actual car accidents -- as in war -- the body can be literally torn apart in chunks, heads or limbs (or pieces of limbs) being strewn about haphazardly. I served in Vietnam, and although I didn't see much, I saw enough. One time, years later in Southern California, I came upon the aftermath of a train accident that killed one man. The police went down the tracks covering the pieces of his body with tarps, until the coroner could show up to shovel up and bag the debris of what was once a human being. It's very easy to sever a limb from the sudden impact of a car accident. In this case discussed by Dr. Grande, the leg of one of the victims was sticking out of the grill almost as if the car were a shark digesting a meal. Vehicles are more dangerous than you realize. Dr. Grande, I just want you to know how much I enjoy your videos. Your calm demeanor, dry humor, and intellect make for great viewing. I'm a now retired due to medical reasons. I'm an RN,BSN who worked for 34 yrs. Being unable to work has caused anxiety and some depression. Many late nights have been spent listening to your analysis, which I find right on target and always gives me more to contemplate.
Congratulations on your UA-cam success. It's been fun watching your platform rise in popularity! ❤

The bit in the ER when she says the cop "you're being too quiet so I'm going to sing" was just unfucking believable

I watched the video on another you tube channel and was absolutely shocked at her disassociation with killing two people and everything that goes with it. There are actually people out here like her is really scary.

@@oldreprobate2748well said, I am scared of seeing how much the culture pushes “me me me” attitude. Literally a drunk girl killed two people and goes “not my fault”…
it’s like “no honey it’s 100% your fault and everyone knows it and YOU know it”

Even completely sober at her sentencing hearing, when allowed to say her piece and “apologize”, every single sentence started with “I…”. Every one. She didn’t name the victims even once. I’d be shocked to learn that she even knows their names today.

I’m afraid I must respectfully disagree… some substances certainly are powerful enough to literally alter ones personality temporarily. I also think their are gradients, steps to it, like a spectrum: from a simply chemical altering of ones personality all the way up to full-on demonic possession through doors these substances open up.
