    BEST SKIN CARE TIPS
    Since the first retinoid was approved for pimples, acne and zits in 1970s, these drugs have been hailed by many as a cure-all for skin conditions. Although retinoids may not be the answer to every skin condition, there are several with proven results.
    Retinoids for Acne, Blackheads and pimples
    If you have moderate to severe pimples that hasn't gotten better with other treatments, a retinoid may help. When spread on the skin, retinoids can unclog pores, allowing other medicated creams and gels to work better.
    Retinoids for Wrinkles and fine lines- prevention and reduction
    The first retinoid approved by the FDA to treat wrinkles was tretinoin, a retinoic acid. This prescription retinoid increases collagen production in the dermis and stimulates vessels in the skin, giving skin a rosy appearance. Retinoic acid can also fade age spots, and reduce precancerous actinic keratosis. Tretinoin can also act as an exfoliating agent. Over-the-counter retinol may not work as well as tretinoin in wrinkle prevention and reduction, but they can improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin.
    How to use: Apply to your face, neck, and chest, at least twice a week.
    What else you need to know: It takes 3 to 6 months of regular use before improvements in fine lines and wrinkle are seen, with best results happening after 7 to 9 months.
    How to Minimize Risks of retinol - retinoid use
    Stay out of the sun. If you must be outdoors, limit your hours, especially between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Use sunscreen preferably with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, and protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and a large-brimmed hat.
    Never use more of the product or use it more frequently than your doctor prescribes or the package label says. Doing so will not increase its effectiveness, but will increase side effects. Start slowly and increase application frequency.
    Use a good moisturizer along with topical retinoids. Doing so will reduce skin drying without interfering with the product's effectiveness Pregnant women or women who are planning on becoming pregnant should not use retinol-retinoic acid.

    loved this video. very informative! I logically started with one percent retinol, first from peter thomas roth and now paula's choice, and what I understood - if you use this product smart, it won't irritate your skin, I have broken capillaries and redness on my cheeks, but these products, with moisturizing does not irritate my skin. it would be so great if you do video like this about oils and how to use them properly. once again you are great!

    Dr. Lim: I got so much education and awareness here about how to titrate the Retin A at a higher % etc. I started off with Obagi Tretinoin 0.1% and b/c of cost I got Refissa .05%. Since using the Refissa I have not had any peeling or irritation. However, I will return to the 0.1% in the future. I am so grateful to have found you.

    So I watch this as I am putting on my Retin A. Lol If I get really dry, I will use Tamanu oil, about 1/2 hour after. Is this okay vs what most would consider a moisturizer? I don't peel or shed with it. I know Retin A travels under the skin a little ways, but what do you use under your eyes? I stop at the orbital bone. Also, are Glycolics and AHAs off limits when using Retin A or do I need to skip a night of Retin A if I want to use one? I use Vit C during the day. I am 58 but was never a sun worshipper. 😄 I also read people telling women to start using Retin A (for anti-aging) the sooner the better - like in their early 20's! There was no way my lifestyle (a little wild) would have tolerated the strict regime needed to be followed on a daily basis at that age. I never knew what time I would get home from work or where I would be staying the night. I think I would have been afraid for my boyfriend to touch my face after I applied Retin A. 😎 Either that it might get on him and burn him or might wipe some off a portion of my face. It's late on the west coast and I'm tired and rambling. Sorry. 🌹❤️

      Thanks... but this stuff (skin care) is really really basic - any dermatologist can do. In fact my product knowledge is not up to speed with general prescribing dermatologist because most of my time is with lasers, surgery and procedures. Skin care complements what I do as preventative.. so that is why I see it as important. Davin Lim, Brisbane. Australia.

    Tnx, doc for the video! And what brand of retinoid gel do you recomend to use (for extra oily skin)? Is A-Ret gel 0.1% (Menarini) good as retinoid gel (sellers from ebay write it's retinol cream, dunno why, but the packaging has "tretinoin" word...)? Or what others brand can u suggest? If it possible, gel like type, not cream.

  • @sarahnicholson4862
    @sarahnicholson4862 6 років тому +2

    Hey Dr. Lim, I looked into starting a Vitamin A cream. But there is a lot of research out there stating tretinoin could be teratogenic. And considering it's not safe for pregnant women, it makes me skeptical to put this near my skin. High cellular turnover and 'reprogramming' to cells to behave like proper cells sounds like a recipe for cancer.
    Do you think you could you do a video that addresses these? Is the confusion coming from orally administered retinoids being different from topical ones?

    • @Amy-eb8fi
      @Amy-eb8fi 4 роки тому

      Sarah Nicholson from what I understood of retinol, the reason it’s “not safe for pregnancy” is based mostly around not having scientific evidence to refute it, regarding pregnancy. I think a previous study has stated there could be adverse effects based on what they found (unrelated to pregnancy in any way). The only way to prove beyond speculation that retinol was absolutely safe or unsafe would be to test retinol on pregnant women which would never pass through an ethics committee ever. Therefore, given they can’t prove nor disprove, they just say it’s probably best to steer clear. Like alcohol. Realistically, in the later trimesters (not the first) will a glass of wine now and then do anything? Probably not, but it’s best to steer clear, just in case. Hope this helps, it’s just what I’ve picked up on the subject. But obviously feel free to do your own research.

    Hello Dr. Lim,
    I heard that Retinol is not really working. Bcs. of its oxidative behavior, when you open the Creme... It tends to lose its benefit and because of the amount of 0,1 % is not really working. I mean I heard that products with the Hydroxypinacolone is a better choice... It is (like I understand) an acid and doesn’t need to be proceed by our body... Do you have a recommendation for a cream with Hydroxypinacolone ?
    And who do you recommend to get the prescripted version of the Retonoid Cream? Does it has more side effects than dry skin, peeling and sensitivity to Sun?
    Sorry for my not so suffisticated English:-) and thank you very much! Hope your injury will heal fast and well!

    You answered many questions I've thought of over time! I still have one though...if you're using a non prescription exfoliant/cleanser a few times a week that has glycolic or vitamin C, are you still able to use retinol? Thanks 😊

    I tried vitamin A years ago but with a sunscreen I didn't know was expired and ended up with huge brown areas on my cheeks. I don't know if it was too high of a concentration but I've been trying to correct the damage for years. Tried hydroquinone cream which helped until sun exposure reversed the effects🙄. Is there anything I can use at home to get rid of the hyper pigmentation? I've seen your videos on acid peels but I am a little scared to try them on my own. Thank you for your videos, I find them fascinating and informative.👍🏼

    Hi David, which of the 3 generation of retinoids do you recommend for the purposes of preemptive anti aging - tretinoin, differin or tazorat?

      First and last... works on RAR receptors. Studies from tretinoin by Griffith and co. over two decades ago. Cheers, Davin Lim
