Wow, I have used HA for YEARS and honestly never once did I truly feel like it made a difference for my dry skin. Now here I am at 31 with severe eczema on my face. Marketing really did a number on some of us!
Girl SAME. 31 with eczema all over my face! I’ve had eczema since I was a kid but NEVER like this on my face. I would get it on my eyelids and a little around my nose. Now I have perioral dermatitis 😑. I used to tolerate it alright but now my skin it hates it lol. I didn’t even pay attention to how many products I had with HA until I started watching her videos! When you have products, you have to apply them properly for them to work. Hyaluronic acid is a water loving hydrophilic molecule. Your face should be damp. Right after washing it is the proper time to put it on your face. Use some rose water, coconut water, or aloe water to provide moisture if you need to. Otherwise, the hyaluronic acids will such the moisture from your skin leaving it dryer than before. Use an oil like Pomifera Rose to moisturizer and lock in the moisture. Pomifera Rose will be absorbed into your skin. It’s an amazing new oil for the skin. It acts like an occlusive to hold in moisture. Check out Pomifera Rose oil blend or the pure version. I used to be a consultant, but I’m not now
I always wondered why Hyaluronic Acid never seemed to work on my dry, dehydrated skin when, reading the blurb, it should have been the perfect solution. Now I know why, and also why I find glycerine-based products far more soothing and efficient. Thank you, Dr. Idriss! 💕
hi! I have super dry skin and I had the same reaction with HA. You have to apply it to damp skin (I use spray on rose water) as it works better. After it's dry you seal it in with a moisturizer :)
I am an advocate of HA (an esthetician as well) use it in my skin care routine religiously....but upon this very clear and easy to understand explanation, im definitely reconsidering. Thank you!!

This is the most important skin care video I've come across. Thank you for debunking the craziness going on about HA. I have experienced people in beauty stores, drugstores, everywhere correcting me when I have said HA dries my skin up, making it appear like a ten year old newspaper.
This is fabulous! I got caught up in the HA hype and I swear my skin became inflamed but I could not understand why. THIS explains everything! Thank you!!
I found this exact thing out in two strange ways. First my Gynecologist prescribed a product with HA in it for menopausal dryness and it caused massive redness, burning and even bleeding, then my ophthalmologist prescribed eye drops with HA for eye dryness which caused more dryness and burning. If it wasn’t for both situations I wouldn’t have put it together but HA was the only common denominator. So happy this video popped up on my feed today.
@@Name14daysoh my goodness! I would have never guessed this or put these two together. I have blepharitis in the eyes and the opthalmologist prescribed Systane eye drops several times a day. I have been trying to be on top of it, but I feel like my eyes have been more itchy. Ugh. Going to have to look into this! So glad this was brought up!
From what I learned about the use of hyaluronic acid serum, you should not use it on dry skin. Because if you do, it'll cause exactly what you say by drawing the moisture it wants from your skin. First, you wet your skin with water, then while it is still wet you use the hyaluronic acid to bind that water, and then while it is still wet you use a moisturizer to lock that on the top of your skin so it doesn't evaporate. Glycerin would apparently work just as well, but you don't really see glycerin serums in the drugstore. But yes, to use hyaluronic acid on its own is actually drying and all those skincare products manufacturers should be sued for spreading misinformation.
I dont know which influencers said so. I have watched mamy videos nd almost everyone clarified to use it on damp skin and then lock it with moisturizer.
I appreciate people like Hyram, who gives a disclaimer every single time that he is not a doctor and tries not to speak beyond his knowledge. Moody of the time, I agree, though.

You are incredible! I am a biochemistry major and I am living for your run down of how these chemicals are use in beauty products. You are very inspiring, and so funny guuurl!
@@SannaJankarin Hey, I'm a biochem student (3rd year undergraduate) in the U.K. I love biochemistry! It can be hard but it can take you to so many places, whether you stay in academia, or transition into industry, medicine, law or finance, and gives you a lot of skills (critical thinking/reading, mathematics, organic chemistry, lab skills, problem solving, and in my case essay writing as at my uni we write at least 1 essay a week). As I'm in the U.K. we don't have a minor, just study biochem for 4 years straight, and I like it that way. I hope that helps!
This explains so much to me! I tried and tried, and tried to use HA but to no avail. I finally gave up and removed it from my skin care routine completely, assuming I must be allergic. Every time I tried it, I would break out in my skin would get red and angry. I feel so vindicated!
I live in the desert and keep trying HA’s to help with my dry skin. It just has gotten worse and worse and I finally stopped all my things except moisturizer and it fixed my problems. I stopped with the HA and didn’t understand why it didn’t work for me. Thank you for helping me realize I am not crazy!
@@abdullahafzal5800, on damp skin it will soak the skin from the very bottom. First the damp moisture, then all the layers of the skin. Speaking from first hand experience. I wish HA was forbidden to use in skincare.
Before hyaluronic acid was in anything, it was in serums which you put on, then you put moisturizer over. That worked beautifully, so everybody started adding it to their cream/lotion/potion and upset the balance. Those of us who've been using skincare longer than a minute know this.
Your channel deserves to have more views. I subscribed the moment you said these dermatologists are sleeping with the skin care companies. PREACH!!! Reminders to myself: 1. Topic HA stays in the first layer of your skin (doesn’t go deep because the molecules are too big to penetrate). 2. It can dehydrate the skin because it absorbs the water. 3. It may cause irritation. 4. Glycerin is better.
I always suspected that HA was behind my skin woes. I refused to believe that it was causing my issues because of the hype it has but Im glad that someone has spoken about this.
Very good explanation, I hope people were patient enough to watch this through. The way I use HA is that I slap it on my skin, wait for 5 mins and then either spray facial mist or splash tap water (ours is very clean) on and immediately follow with either oil or some other product that seals the moisture in. Used this way, HA smoothens the fine lines without drying the skin too much.
I use it that way too. However I’ve stopped using it everyday, down to few times a week … I notice the smoothing better and it works really good on my inner thighs and upper arms, it really does the job for me in those areas.
I just a job at Sephora and I wanted to study skincare for clients and I’m still grateful for the videos to just know what’s really going on from a professional standpoint
I bought HA today for the first time and applied on my skin. I immediately came to conclusion that it is not at all hydrating. Then i applied Glycerin, and my skin is shining. Glad i have not been trapped in this HA thing for long. Debunked within a day after watching your video 😂

I used to have very dry skin, so dry that I feared washing my face if I did not have access to a moisturizer right away. After watching your videos about HA, I went to go look at the ingredients of my moisturizers, and lo and behold, HA was in every one of them. I decided to get a drug store moisturizer without HA or SH (Pacifica vegan ceramide cream) and after 2 days of using it day and night, my skin completely changed. My skin is no longer immediately dry and uncomfortable after a shower or a face wash. I threw away my old moisturizer and never looked back. I can now wash my face after a workout at the gym and not be afraid of having uncomfortably dry skin for the rest of the day. THANK YOU!!!

I learned to apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin only never on to dry skin and then to always seal it in with an occlusive barrier. That is the only way it is going to work without transepidermal water loss. It won’t penetrate deep into the dermis, but it will make the top layer of skin look really nice if you do it correctly! They don’t teach people how to apply hyaluronic acid properly on the labels of products...
that exactly how i use it and it has worked well for me, no dryness! even when my desert-dry body skin got dry in winter due to the heater, my face did not feel dry or tight. ( i dont put HA on my body obviously, just my face)

I’ve tried to tell people, but no one believed me. Or, I’ve had people say, “Your skin is like porcelain. Do you use HA?” I’ve been told it works well as an injectable, but I’ve never had my face injected with anything. I send those who think it’s a “Miracle Worker” to this video!
I feel so empowered by your teachings Miss Shereene. What an excellent education you're selflessly giving to your tribe. And with humor too. I couldn't ask for a better teacher. 😘❤👏🙌🥂🙏
I totally love this video! I'm a bit late to your video but its still relevant because of how massive the long play HA is making in marketing stories! I am a formulation chemistry student and I also had the same thoughts about HA as a straight hero topical! As a formulations chemist, the rule of thumb with HA, esp. the Sodium Hyaluronate, is to use super low % in context with the rheology modifier we're using.. really to help buff up and assists in hydration of the rheology modifiers we use in formulation. It helps makes things creamy, smooth and feel silky. So for the consumer, it's used in a way to support other key ingredients that keep your skin moisturised. It boosts the body of the moisturiser, so it feel amazingly smooth when it's applied and helps keeps the formula stable longer (from oxidizing) which is a great thing. But to claim that it will actually plump, it's the combinations of all the ingredients together that will do that... not the HA.. literally, no. Love your work Dr. S.I x
I am learning so much from you, Doctor. I am a physician as well, and your straight to the point, evidence based lectures are just what I need. Thank you. Greetings from the Philippines. 🤗
I started a Neutrogena hyaluronic acid to my skincare routine and my skin is so irritated and dry!!!! I have never had this issue. Thank you for being truthful. My poor skin😢

Thank you so much. Many influencers say that HA acts like Filler !! I was shocked because my brain was what !!!!!!! No way. I saved money just by watching this video. Love you Dr
I live in the high desert where the average humidity is 15%. When hyaluronic acid first blew up I jumped on it and couldn’t figure out for the life of me why my skin was feeling MORE dehydrated. I had to do quite a bit of research before I realized how it truly works and that it was never going to work for me. Thank you for spreading this info 💕
Thank you, Dr. Idriss! Now I know why my face felt and looked like the Sahara and nothing was helping! I've been watching your videos and my skincare routine changes have made such a difference that my husband noticed and said I look younger - and this year, I turned 68. 😊
I hate that product so much. It's called cheap but yeah it's 30ml and it's not even as well formulated as the Korean toners which are 150 ml and only 2-3 times more of the price. Sticky AF, even the pipe can't hold it. Doesn't absorb fast enough and dries me out when it's finally absorbed. I always try to use moisturizer as soon as possible but I still feel dry after The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid.
That video was so eye opening! I kept wondering why the ordinary HA serum made my cheeks red and irritated. I thought maybe it means my skin has to get used to it. But it didn't get better at all, and I am relieved to hear that HA is not even that amazing. I always had an impression it's a must have for every skin type and it's something amazing for skin. Thanks for educating us!
I am not a dermatologist or even a GP but I don’t understand your logic of “locking in moisture” by using lotion after HA. The video above just explained that HYALURONIC ACID DRAWS MOISTURE AWAY FROM YOUR SKIN. So “locking in moisture” will just ensure the HA you applied will draw even more moisture from your skin.
Holly cow-- now it makes sense why my face is reacting how it is. Thank you thank you thank you. We need you in our lives, I need you in my life. Thank you again. Stay safe xoxoxo
I feel like not a lot of people actually know how to use HA correctly….You’re supposed to dampen the crap out of your face, and then put it on. HA itself is not hydrating, but mixed with water it allows the water to sink into your skin, and can be very hydrating.
I literally used it on soaking wet face, literally dripping & not letting it get too dry, then using moisturizer, it ruined my skin & i just realized it 2 years later
I think you didnt watch the video correctly, it doesnt matter what you do with it it will not “sink in” to the place where it’s needed - the dermis. Its just sits at the top and not doing much longterm. It literally is taking water from your skin afterwards no matter how much water you put on your skin. Whats the point of the HA if you need to put a moisturizer on after, it takes the moisture from the moisturizer. Like whats the point 😂
You’re exactly right! I can literally see my face plump up after I use it. It has made a HUGE difference. Can’t even see my acne scars when I use it. It NEEDS water work so I always apply it to a wet face
This is fascinating! I was always told to put HA on a damp freshly washed face so that the HA could cling to that water and then seal it in with a moisturizer. I learn something every week from you! I appreciate you and your videos so much! Thank you.
37 y/o here in low humidity, winter time SoCal. After watching this, I took HA out of my routine which was just about everything. It's been about a week and my severely dehydrated, sensitive, irritated skin has never looked (and has sustained looking!) better. I was so frustrated over the dry crepey skin around my eyes and slightly red, irritated cheeks that seemed to happen overnight, ie. when I introduced various HA serums and products in 2020. I chalked it up to pandemic stress and not doing enough for my skin. I noticed that I was friggin changing the way I was smiling to avoid scrunching the skin underneath my eyes!! Real wild stuff. That skin is now 80% better and everything looks more dewey, plump and even toned. Thank you so much Dr. Shereene!!
Thank you! Finally glad to see someone well educated to share the real science behind all this. I love it, and also how you incorporate humour in your videos. I have been trying to explain this to others as well.
Here I am.. one whole year after you posted this.. it’s everywhere in my cupboard and on my cosmetics carousels!! Soo, so happy I caught this jewel of a gem of good advice! ❤️❤️🥰
Wow. Thank you so much. I couldn’t figure out why I felt dehydrated and dry af after using an HA. grrrrrr. I will now check my skincare for its HA ingredients. You’re a gem. 🥰🥰
I just found you! So glad I found this .I have been using HA for months and kept telling myself I needed to use it longer (everyone says how good it is just give it more time) but I definitely noticed a increase in all the negatives on my skin since using. I will stop now and trust my body and your advice!!
I use a serum, then an HA cream, then an occlusive moisturizer on top at night. Not every night, just those days I feel my skin needs an extra shot of moisture. This combo works great for me. My skin looks much smoother and hydrated the next day. I never use the HA on its own.
What type of serum? Have you tried replacing the Hyaluronic Acid with a Polyglutanic acid serum? There's one from the inkey list. Polyglutemic acid, Glycerin, Centella asiatica, N-acetyl Glucosamine and Beta Glucan are better than HA. Try it, it might simplify your rutine even more. A serum with Polyglutamic acid + a moisturizer with Beta Glucan, Centella asiatica and Glycerin. Plus, a lip balm with Lanolin or simply a nipple cream with lanolin.
Finally someone on UA-cam saying it like it is. I always try and find products without HA but it is really hard and in the harsh, cold winters in Canada HA does not come near my skin!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!! I've literally been looking for a medical basis for something I heard a couple years ago from a sales person at a beauty store. He told me I shouldn't use HA products in CO because it will pull water from my skin instead of the environment because of the low humidity. I've avoided HA ever since but could not find any medical info to back this claim. I feel like I've finally scratched a mental itch that has been bothering me for so long!
I am so thankful for this extremely educational video. You also destroyed my skincare routine (suffer from dry skin) and I couldn’t thank you enough!! 🙏🏼
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My skin has been feeling very dehydrated so I was planning to buy a HA serum today. You have just not only saved me from drying out my skin more, but also from wasting my money. You give the best dermatological advice! ❤️
If you have water on your face then put HA on top of water you will not pull the moisture out of your skin. Then use a moisturizer on top it works wonders.
I’m a Senior who subscribes to a handful of perfume reviewers and candle reviewers. This post appeared on my phone to watch, and I thought it was very interesting. Im going to pass your informative truths about Hy.Acid to my adult children. I enjoyed your post very much and am looking forward to your glycerin explanation!
I have watched your nighttime routine and there you have shown the products that you currently use, would you consider making a video with drugstore products (affordable products for the regular consumer) where we still can get some benefits from. Thank you for presenting the truth!
Yes, it is known for drying out your skin if there’s no humidity in your air, but it won’t for people that live in a humid climate or have a humidifier in their house. Glycerin also pulls water from the air and if there’s none, it pulls it from your skin. I am in my mid-40s with no wrinkles. I am considering using it as I get older, but I might have to wait until I move back to a humid climate like what I grew up in.
Is there any actual evidence that it pulls from the air first and your skin second? I hear people say this alot but I've also heard of people using the misting your face method in humid areas and still getting dried out. Also how humid does it have to be before it stops pulling from the air and starts pulling from your skin? Is 50% humidity for your area ok? Or does it need to be like 80%?
@@samanthahewitt6038 hey just anecdotal evidence but I am bi-coastal. I live between Seattle and Eastern NC. While Seattle gets plenty rain and overcast it's actually not humid like NC. I say all T that to say HA works great for me in both climates. I always feel plumped and dewy and hydrated after using it. Never dry. Granted i still don't think it's smart to use all the time. I think from my experience it's def doing something good and pulling from the atmosphere because I feel super hydrated when using it. But again that is just me. I would totally avoid it in dry climates for sure.
you're hilarious! Love when you call out companies that jump on the 'trend bandwagon' but use the cheap crappy form of an ingredient to be able to slap the words on the label and trick consumers. For the past two weeks, I’ve been mixing HA with half water, spraying on my hair and then topping with leave on cream conditioner and leave on hair oil. My hair is so much fluffier and healthier looking and feeling. Time will tell.
You and James Welsh + actually lining up with my experiences. I have tried one now which is a combo thing, which is actually nice, but yeah I cannot use HA serums. And people have no idea how much the humidity levels around you affect your skin and what you should use in your skincare even just on a particular day. So thank you for doing this! I wish brands would chill the F down a bit with their ingredient hyping.

I agree, it's hard to find things without it.
Idriss! 💕
Glycerin works by the same mechanism.
hi! I have super dry skin and I had the same reaction with HA. You have to apply it to damp skin (I use spray on rose water) as it works better. After it's dry you seal it in with a moisturizer :)
Same dear, same :(
Glycerin is not the same thing. It’s easily tolerated and works better than HA.

So glad this was brought up!
Use coconut oil for the vaginal dryness. Perfectly natural and no side effects
Super effective 👍
That’s still not effective for those in dry climates
I dont know which influencers said so. I have watched mamy videos nd almost everyone clarified to use it on damp skin and then lock it with moisturizer.
i do exactly that and when i wake up i feel my skin drier
I've been using glycerin with my moisturizer and it's turned my skin from dry and flakey to really soft and supple

Before hyaluronic acid was in anything, it was in serums which you put on, then you put moisturizer over. That worked beautifully, so everybody started adding it to their cream/lotion/potion and upset the balance. Those of us who've been using skincare longer than a minute know this.

Reminders to myself:
1. Topic HA stays in the first layer of your skin (doesn’t go deep because the molecules are too big to penetrate).
2. It can dehydrate the skin because it absorbs the water.
3. It may cause irritation.
4. Glycerin is better.
Advice from someone who talks about star signs

But it didn't get better at all, and I am relieved to hear that HA is not even that amazing. I always had an impression it's a must have for every skin type and it's something amazing for skin. Thanks for educating us!
I think it's because you have to use a moisturizer after it to lock in the moisture.

I would love her to do a comparison video of all the humectants, a derm has never done that on UA-cam before and it would be awesome
I think you didnt watch the video correctly, it doesnt matter what you do with it it will
not “sink in” to the place where it’s needed - the dermis. Its just sits at the top and not doing much longterm. It literally is taking water from your skin afterwards no matter how much water you put on your skin. Whats the point of the HA if you need to put a moisturizer on after, it takes the moisture from the moisturizer. Like whats the point 😂

you should post references! would be nice for people who are also in medicine or just understand biochemistry/like to read papers
I am considering using it as I get older, but I might have to wait until I move back to a humid climate like what I grew up in.
omg you are gorgeous and look so young babe!! I hope to age like u (im only 20 rn haha but spf every day!!) x
I say all T
that to say HA works great for me in both climates.
She addresses this around 12:25
you say you’re 40 and u look rlly good for someone your age in the profile pic. Props to u for taking care of yourself.
you're hilarious! Love when you call out companies that jump on the 'trend bandwagon' but use the cheap crappy form of an ingredient to be able to slap the words on the label and trick consumers. It's been my mission to educate people of these same tricks and have them not waste time and money on bad products. Keep it up!
Thank goodness for you and this video! So refreshing to find a real professional not in the pocket of the pharma/cosmetic industry!! Thank you for cutting thru all the hype and presenting the truth keep it up...hope your videos get the attention they deserve! Loved this!
For the past two weeks, I’ve been mixing HA with half water, spraying on my hair and then topping with leave on cream conditioner and leave on hair oil. My hair is so much fluffier and healthier looking and feeling. Time will tell.
Never heard of it being used on hair. Very cool
paula.. 3months later how is it going?
I'm also curious :) also did you use leave in cream conditioner and leave in hair oir before doing the half water half HA spray thing?
Does it make the hair soft?
You're not using it the right way. You CAN'T use it in dry air. The air has to be humid or you have to use it as you did on your hair.
If it’s not good why you say you’re wasting a tube just to show us? If it’s no good, just open demonstrate and discard. I have found Avocado oil, pumpkinseed oil on my skin has been most affective at smoothing skin and keeping wrinkles at bay. I’m 68 and look fifty so I’m constantly told, I contribute this to genetics, healthy diet and the oils I mentioned. I’m pleased with your honesty and ✌🏽♥️
*Me low key being scared for Shereene while she exposes the Skin industry!!*
🤣 🤣
Don't be scared feel empowered
Yup! Her-“don’t use much Niacinimide” video was similar...!!!
Let the truth be known-they would have to prove her wrong and they can’t do that.
She’ll be fine she has her own business
Thank you! I am happy to know I am not crazy in my disdain for HA. It dries me out and irritates my skin so badly. Trying to find products without HA is near impossible...
Ikr, Cerave moisturizing lotion has a lot more glycerin than HA though. But my ordinary lactic acid and inkylist retinol have HA and idk how to find stuff without it. My only hope since I live in a dryish place is to moisturize a lot with stuff low in HA and then probably invest in a humidifier
Thank you, that answered my question when 1 week after using HA every night, my skin was super dry, itchy and red... I stopped using it and my skin barrier was so much better... 😊😊😊
Thank you so much Dr Shereene for this wonderful video. I've been using all hyaluronic cosmetics here in Japan for decades and yet I don't see any good result better than my sister's complexion and she's only using the drug store very cheap cosmetics. I quitted right today for my next month order. You saved my money. Thanks a million. God bless you more wisdom in your career. Take care.
I hate that HA is in EVERYTHING it’s so hard to avoid. I’ve 100% noticed the drying effects and am having a hard time avoiding it bc a lot of the helpful ingredients in products I like also contain HA even my occlusive moisturizers! So frustrating but I’m grateful to hear I’m not the only one to experience the dryness I thought it was just me!
Right there with you! It really killed my skin. I now use Pixi products - no HA. I know people knock Pixi because of all the oils, but it literally saved my skin.
@@janeburkhart4051 it’s so comforting to know that I’m not the only one! I really hope this trend dies out!! I’ve never had dry skin until about three months ago when I overhauled my skin care routine and basically went from doing nothing to using really expensive skin care 😑 it’s completely dehydrated my face! A complete backfire of my goal to increase hydration and decrease fine lines etc. spent so much money I’m really not happy about that! I’ll definitely have to look into pixie!! Right now I’ve been using a moisturizer with mineral oil and I feel like people REALLY hate on mineral oil LOL but it’s the absolute only thing that’s helped so far!! So crazy I paid money for dry skin 🤦🏼♀️ ugh I guess I’m happy I at least learned this relatively quickly I know to avoid it going forward!!
I agree, it's hard to find things without it. I live in a mild / moderate humidity area and have switched my products around to only use HA containing serums in the daytime, and so far I've noticed an improvement, particularly in flaking near my eyes. Luckily my moisturizers don't contain any HA, but the serums all do. Moving forward I will try to look for serums without it (when possible), avoid all "dedicated" HA serums, and keep using HA-free moisturizers. Hopefully this does the trick.
@@bdutka30 That’s where I’m at too. I’m certainly not about to throw away all my serums but no dedicated HA and I’m looking form more HA free moisturizers especially ones with more occlusive ingredients! So far I think it’s helped!
Genuinely glad you made this because I had been using it and it literally made my skin so dry!! Didn’t know where I was going wrong! It really irritated my skin as well!
“Much more better educated”. I literally laughed out loud when you said this. Great video. Made me rethink my HA routine.
Just purchased from HA from the the ordinary company and now I will Be returning it: I have used it a few times and felt like my face was tight and drier. So I will be continuing my skin care routine without HA. Thank you!!
