You should do the same test but with both calibers in their heaviest grain bullet. As I know that the Smith & Wesson performance series revolver definitely penetrates more than 64 inchs of ballistics gel with the 700 grain hard cast and still has enough kinetic energy to break boards.

Thank you for being very scientific and consistent with this experiment! Too many people compare the 500 SWM revolver vs a 45-70 rifle, and that is just not a fair test! Thanks for putting this together!
As awesome of a round as the .500 S&W is, I still LOVE my 45-70!! Thanks for a great video Scott 😁 Danny from Taofledermaus’s channel was rockin’ a Kentucky Ballistics shirt in their last video by the way!
If you happen to be a handloader, you have 3 different power levels with the 45-70. The last section is for the strongest actions chambered in 45-70 & is very near .458 Win Mag velocities & can be a handful with heavy bullets & can take the toughest of game animals.
500 bullets go from 300grain to 700grain bullets. That means that you can seat the lighter 400-500 grain bullets much further in the case to greatly increase case capacity. This can be used to make the cartridge more powerful at the same pressure, as powerful with lower pressure, or perform better for your specific barrel length
@@bobjohnson1633 That's fascinating, I didn't realise you could achieve different power with the same pressure. Surely the same pressure acting over the same area produces the same force?
@@sawspitfire422 They're talking about seating the bullet further so that they take up less space inside the case. More powder means more total amount of gas means the pressure stays higher as the bullet moves and more total work by the time it leaves the barrel. Also most factory 500 S&W is loaded with fast burning powders to give good performance in revolvers, which limits its power in rifles. Full power rifles loads can push 450gr bullets to over 2200fps, which is far more energy than what Scott got here.

I like the way the 500 rifle round made the block jump. It used most of it's energy on entry and didn't have enough left to exit block-2. I love that model 89!
Great comparison video Scott. It looks like sometimes faster isn't always better. I also noticed that folding tables had a higher survival rate back in the day. Lol
I've used this .45-70 bullet for the last 2 years hunting Wisconsin deer. Works great. It's really great to see a gel video, I never expected to see that. I appreciate it so much, thank you.
GREAT vids Scott! Love the big bores. Those who were surprised by some of the results need to take into account the bigger hole the 500 is making. No need to get an energy vs TKO debate going but these two rounds as well as the 450 Marlin (wish it would have caught on more) are absolutely devastating. Keep those videos coming man.
6:34 The visible difference in the amount of imparted energy from higher velocity when shot from a rifle is amazing. Let's calculate: 500 S&W, 275 gr revolver 1969 ft/sec, rifle 2244 ft/sec, so considering that bullets remained in the medium, for revolver the amount of energy transferred was 2367 foot pounds, and for rifle was 3074 foot pounds. That's a difference of 700 foot pounds of energy, so it's almost like being shot with a 240 gr 44 Magnum traveling at 1180 ft/sec at the same time while being shot with the 500 S&W.
Its the difference in diameter not speed. The larger diameter projectile dumps more energy per unit time. In this case the 500 dumped its energy into the first block in a very flamboyant manner, but didnt penetrate particularly well. The 458 retained enough of its energy to penetrate 50% deeper.
I would love more videos like this again with extremely useful comparisons. It’s hard to find videos this good and thorough on any channels. I love the comedy now too but, this was great back in the day.
Wow I didn't predict that outcome thats fascinating🤔.. iv been waiting a long time to see exactly this comparison.... This would not have been a cheap video to put together. Many thanks to Scott at Kentucky Ballistics super work.😊😉
Only a minute and a half into the video, but I gotta say thank you so much for providing all of the details and specs of the firearms and ammunition. Results vary with hundreds of gun and cartridge combos, and it can trick some people into thinking one is way better, and being disappointed when they lay down the cash and it's not what they had expected.
My favorite gun of all time is the Smith and Wesson Model 500 (with the 8.38" barrel for the classic look). My second favorite gun of all time is the Magnum Research BFR chambered in .45-70. The only thing is that I want them to make a BFR in .45-70 with the barrel rib from their .45LC model. It looks so smooth, and it makes the gun look a lot more unique. So I'm barely biased when it comes to comparing them. I know it's simple; the .500 magnum has superior force and stopping power, while the .45-70 has superior penetration. Both are absolutely badass when used with handcannons, so much so that they put all other handcannon calibers to shame.
I have to say I’m a little surprised by the results. I might have guessed that the 500 SWM would have outperformed the 45-70 only because the 500 was developed much later, and I assumed the pressures would exceed the limits placed on the older 45-70. Very valuable information! Thanks!
Great comparison. I would love to see the S&W 460 vs both the 45/70 & the S&W 500 in big horn and pistol I was a little surprised by the results of your test as I think you were. Anyway, great job and I really enjoy all your video's!
Dude!! I know this is an older video but I was super impressed with your shots on the chronograph. I serve as a Ranger officer at my local shooting range and I’ve seen people blow their chrono’s away!! I laugh every time.
It's weird that the round you would expect to be optimized for handguns gains more velocity from being shot from a rifle than the round you would expect to be optimized for rifles loses from being shot from a handgun.
UA-cam thought to suggest this older video for me. I started watching this channel about two years ago. Cool to see the difference from before I started watching. Still cool and 45-70 is the way to go. I’m biased.
Great presentation! I think overall, the S&W 500 Revolver's performance was outstanding. The combination of good penetration, with superb expansion makes for a real winner!
The 45-70 was an incredible result. I have a marlin 1895 18” barrel and the BFR 45-70 10” barrel. Considering the BFR is a revolver with a loss of gas pressure from the gap behind the barrel, and the short (relatively) barrel which barely gives the powder time to burn, the BFR cleared the gel. My BFR is my favorite gun to shoot.
4570 penetrated further, but clearly both the 500 revolver and the 500 rifle hit much harder. He flipped the gel block with the 500. The 4570 went in and barely moved the block at all. Point of impact 500 wins in both revolver and rifle hands down. Great video scott
Crazy the 45-70 advertised better ballistics in terms of ft per second and muzzle energy, but actually had less in both categories but actually performed much better in the tests, better penetration and full weight retention even with a heavier bullet.
I've never seen a video of Scott like this before, where he is not projecting a wild redneck character. I think he's using his cop voice here. " Sir, the reason I pulled you over today is I clocked you going 85 MPH in a 70MPH zone" 😂
I was surprised by the lower penetration of the .45-70 from the rifle given its higher velocity, but I guess the greater expansion gobbled up the energy.
Good presentation of the calibers with as close as possible variation. Looks to me like the 45-70 does a pretty reasonable job, especially where penetration matters.
I'm fairly new to guntubing (and youtube in general) so it's funny to see how serious KB videos once were. I like both, maybe add a Kentucky Balistics Reviews channel to your lineup.

5:04 There's a reason the .45-70 is such an effective hunting cartridge (within range of bullet drop): the common bullet weights for the cartridge have exceptional sectional density, which means efficient penetration even through heavy bone and muscle. I.E. That ammunition is remarkably light for .45-70 but even At 300 grains a .455 bullet has a significantly longer sectional density than a .50 caliber bullet does at 275 grains. It's the same reason the 6.5mm cartridges carry such a good reputation for long range accuracy and penetration of game animals - the common bullet weights have excellent sectional density. The same can be said for .44 magnum as well.
Nobody is shooting a 275grain 500. Standard bullet weights are between 400 and 600. 500 mag is a handgun round and 45-70 is a rifle round. They must be bought in semi-custom guns to get them in the other platform. 500 is superior as a pistol or dual platform cartridge. 45-70 modern is a better rifle cartridge.
@@bobjohnson1633 Quote: *"Standard bullet weights are between 400 and 600."* 1) The two most common weights are 350 and 440: anything 500 gr and above is specialty ammunition from places like Underwood, Doubletap or Steinel. 2) That's also lead rounds, not solid copper, which weighs less. Quote: *"500 mag is a handgun round and 45-70 is a rifle round"* Obviously. Quote: *"They must be bought in semi-custom guns to get them in the other platform."* It's much more about the pressure levels, length of the cartridge and the fact that they're rimmed. Lever action guns don't have a lot of problems - assuming the action can handle the 60k psi of the .500 S&W. Quote: *"500 is superior as a pistol or dual platform cartridge. 45-70 modern is a better rifle cartridge."* It has superior ballistics, whether or not it's superior as a pistol cartridge is another issue entirely. A caliber most people can't afford to shoot, may not be the best cartridge of all possible choices. There's also heavy recoil and the concussion in close quarters is extreme even without a ported barrel. Now, in a lever action rifle - I'd probably still prefer a .45-70, better penetration. .500 S&W magnum is a very capable cartridge, but I think it's something S&W cooked up purely for the sake of reclaiming their former spot as having *the* most powerful handgun cartridge.
Just sent my Henry back to them because it broke. Already have someone ready to buy it when it gets back and have a Smith and Wesson 500 magnum ordered
@@MM_405 end of the mag tube. Newer models are good to go. Older models can bend at the end and break. New ones have the clamp that they lock into. Henry was great about it and less than a day after I emailed them they had me a pre paid code and all the info I needed to send it back
the 45-70 continually surprises me. it is one of the most potent rounds, and it is older than dirt. it will take anything that walks this planet, no exceptions. i just picked up a new 45-70, a chiappa 12inch 1886 ridgerunner takedown. so far i've just shot 300grain'ers through it, and it is mild mild mild. as is said, continually surprised by this round. do more big bore stuff Scott, big holes, and big bangs are always fun. good job.
It looks like the 500 gains a lot more from the extra barrel length. And dumps a lot more of its energy faster. Meaning if you want more of a difference in all around performance of the round the 500 magnums would be better for it.
Higher operating pressure. The 45-70 loading is pretty mild though tbh. I’m shooting a 405 speer soft point from mine and according to Hodgdon it should be humming along right about 1800 ft/sec. Undoubtedly a 300 or 350 would be going faster if loaded to the same pressure, which is considered safe for any 45/70 other than a trapdoor
I've done a chronograph comparison with my bfr 45-70 and my sharps 45-70 so 10" to a 30" barrel and had right at 500fps difference with the same loads. It goes pretty much exactly inline with the standard big bore velocity estimation difference of about 50fps an inch

Considering the BFR is a revolver with a loss of gas pressure from the gap behind the barrel, and the short (relatively) barrel which barely gives the powder time to burn, the BFR cleared the gel. My BFR is my favorite gun to shoot.
I love all the technical data. 👍 you have an awesome collection there Scott and it’s very cool that you share it with your followers. 🙏😇
4570 penetrated further, but clearly both the 500 revolver and the 500 rifle hit much harder. He flipped the gel block with the 500. The 4570 went in and barely moved the block at all. Point of impact 500 wins in both revolver and rifle hands down. Great video scott
And the strange thing is that the bigger and heavier 45 70 was slower than the 500 magnum and penetrated more
You come along way! Hell of a lot more followers. Good Shit
I've been wondering how the .500 stacked up to the 45-70..now I have a good idea. Thanks Scott!
You’re welcome!
My thoughts exactly 👍🏻
Too
You really covered all the bases here. Great comparison video!
I was surprised too. Seemed counter-intuitive.
Faster bullets have more friction. You want the specific bullet to work properly for the specific velocity. HP are not supposed to break off.
That's so weird to see
Good presentation of the calibers with as close as possible variation. Looks to me like the 45-70 does a pretty reasonable job, especially where penetration matters.
I have been a subscriber for 5 years I love the video
I just came back in time to say hello... tell Scooter the futures looking bright 😂
Been following the channel for a long time. You've come a long way. I do miss the old content too though.
I'll take the 45-70 any day over the 500
Why?
Why ?
@@andywilson8698 Cause ol' joel kelly here goes up to the arctic circle and randomly shoots blue whales. He needs it for all that blubber.
@@Natef89 why
@@andywilson8698 But... Why?
22 inches of penetration out of the lever action? That makes me think home defense... almost... if I was very angry... very very angry😂😂😂.
Or big trolls!
I’m definitely not trying to influence you in any way but, you’d be very mad if someone broke in
That 500 rifle is so frikken perfect. Just a beautiful masterpiece IMO.
Winner and still undisputed heavyweight champion of the world for 147 years, the .45-70.
I'm fairly new to guntubing (and youtube in general) so it's funny to see how serious KB videos once were. I like both, maybe add a Kentucky Balistics Reviews channel to your lineup.
45-70, the lord's rifle round. Round that tamed the west.
Those are some real man rounds....Good testing and results....Good stuff...
45-70 still the king. Freakin' monster round with days or penetration!
I wasn’t aware that DoubleTap was loading Barnes bullets. Best hunting bullets in my opinion. Thanks for the info.
Yeah, you're not gonna live through either of those, but the wound channel from the 500 was scary lol.
Love this guy ,rest who needs a stinking rest. Thanks for another great video.
I can see what you were saying about coming out of your shell in the one hammer tap heavy adjustment video! Youve come along way with you're channel man! Youve learned to be a hell of alot more entertaining man, keep up the good work though! Love your videos
I love going back to these old videos to see how calm he is. UA-cam turned him into a monster
Hahahahaha awesome video!...both Scot & the guns have gotten much bigger since then👍👍👍
It looks like the rifle's faster shots created more cavitation which crated more drag - so less penetration. Weird, not expecting that.
45-70 cheaper than 500 and probably easier to find. Winchester 1886 The Jonn Browning design w octagonal barrel is my sweetheart
I miss these older videos.
I love reloading .45-70, I reload some really great hunting ammo for Ruger #1. Which can be hotter loads than for lever actions.

Quote: *"Standard bullet weights are between 400 and 600."*
1) The two most common weights are 350 and 440: anything 500 gr and above is specialty ammunition from places like Underwood, Doubletap or Steinel.
2) That's also lead rounds, not solid copper, which weighs less.
Quote: *"500 mag is a handgun round and 45-70 is a rifle round"*
Obviously.
Quote: *"They must be bought in semi-custom guns to get them in the other platform."*
It's much more about the pressure levels, length of the cartridge and the fact that they're rimmed. Lever action guns don't have a lot of problems - assuming the action can handle the 60k psi of the .500 S&W.
Quote: *"500 is superior as a pistol or dual platform cartridge. 45-70 modern is a better rifle cartridge."*
It has superior ballistics, whether or not it's superior as a pistol cartridge is another issue entirely.
I've been on the fence about buying a lever action rifle, especially the 45-70 Henry. I think I'll get one soon.
Just sent my Henry back to them because it broke. Already have someone ready to buy it when it gets back and have a Smith and Wesson 500 magnum ordered
The FuzzyMonkey what broke on your Henry? Looking to buy one but I’m still doing my homework.
@@MM_405 end of the mag tube. Newer models are good to go. Older models can bend at the end and break. New ones have the clamp that they lock into. Henry was great about it and less than a day after I emailed them they had me a pre paid code and all the info I needed to send it back
The FuzzyMonkey good to know they treat there customers good.
They have it with a side loader now.
Well, I don't need the 500 anymore. thank you. Great video!!!
the 45-70 continually surprises me. it is one of the most potent rounds, and it is older than dirt. it will take anything that walks this planet, no exceptions. i just picked up a new 45-70, a chiappa 12inch 1886 ridgerunner takedown. so far i've just shot 300grain'ers through it, and it is mild mild mild. as is said, continually surprised by this round.
do more big bore stuff Scott, big holes, and big bangs are always fun. good job.
.375H&H
It looks like the 500 gains a lot more from the extra barrel length. And dumps a lot more of its energy faster. Meaning if you want more of a difference in all around performance of the round the 500 magnums would be better for it.
Higher operating pressure. The 45-70 loading is pretty mild though tbh. I’m shooting a 405 speer soft point from mine and according to Hodgdon it should be humming along right about 1800 ft/sec. Undoubtedly a 300 or 350 would be going faster if loaded to the same pressure, which is considered safe for any 45/70 other than a trapdoor
Damn Scott, young you are so calm and serious!
😁👍
I really enjoy these big caliber comparisons
Cool to go back and see how the channel has evolved. Always a enjoyed your content.
Looking at Scott's gains alone from original videos to almost getting blown up to now is crazy. He is a beast 💪
GREAT video -- love that 45/70
Man, thanks to test an 45-70 TSX!!
10inch barrels are rifles. They are also a bear to conceal. ( Lol ) great video again!! Rich
I've done a chronograph comparison with my bfr 45-70 and my sharps 45-70 so 10" to a 30" barrel and had right at 500fps difference with the same loads. It goes pretty much exactly inline with the standard big bore velocity estimation difference of about 50fps an inch
Brutal damage by both. 45-70 is king!!!
Scott's wife was right. This was not a good style for him, plenty of channels that do 'by the numbers'. Glad he changed the way he did content and allowed him to succeed the way he has.
You look so young on that one! Long ways has gone till this!
🖖🏻🇫🇷😎🇫🇷😎🇫🇷🖖🏻
great video! this tells me the 275gr Barnes .500" is perfect for the handgun but too light for the carbine.
I love firing Grizzly 440 gr hard cast from mine.
Thank you. This is informative.
