    I think Henry and Hornady owe you some commissions b/c you just sold me on that 44. Holy smokes. That was an awesome test and thanks for the extra verifications.
    Feel free to bring those 2 rifles back and shoot some of those failed JHPs in those calibers. They might prove themselves a bargain out of a 20" barrel. But you really can't do much better than these 2 rounds today.
    Edit: I just searched and found Hornady makes 140gn and 160 Lever Revolution ammo for my 30-30. So no new rifle needed. It has the flex tip and improves its effective range significantly. So thanks for promoting me to research these. Gonna get a couple boxes of the 160s.

      The 30-30 ammo's good stuff just a bit expensive. I load my own with the leverevolution powder. It's good stuff and it seems like the ways it burns works well in long barrels. I use standard soft point or hollow point Boat tail .308 bullets because I mostly shoot a 30-30 bolt action.

    • @WayStedYou
      @WayStedYou Рік тому +5

      the 30 30 is the one round they make that makes any sense to me, the higher B.C they claim actually is true for the 30 30 whereas you can get more or less equal B.C regular lead 240 and 220 grainers fairly easily.

    The Magnum pistol cartridges are generally loaded with powder that was designed for rifles using a pistol sized cartridge. The 30 Carbine, 38-40 and 44-40 are some examples. So, when you put them in a rifle, you get good performance like your test shows. The lighter Magnum bullet loads also pick up a lot of velocity.

    The manufacturer might have been trying to hit those advertised velocities out of a typical hunting revolver where you’d still see a sizable fireball. If that fireball was dissipated in a longer barrel it might have been able to generate the extra velocity you’re seeing. Just a guess on my part. Great video.

    I like the clothing barrier for the rifle rounds. Like you mentioned in the last video it sort of represents the hide that would be on an animal. I would have been surprised at the chrono readings also. One would think the listed speeds would be from a longer barrel for reasons as you stated. One of my most favorite rifles is an older Rossi 92 Trapper (16-inch barrel) with Fire Sights in .357 Mag. Several years ago sitting in a bush blind and shooting off a monopod shooting stick I dropped an 8-Point buck at around 90 yards with a single shot to the chest. The deer went straight down, slightly raised its head three times and that was it. I was using 180 Grain Federal Power-Shoks JHP. Molly is that little trapper's name and would be one of the very last rifles I would get rid of.

    That's weird because I saw these tested in handguns before and the expansion and overall performance was suboptimal. Now it seems like they are designed to work well from a handgun and even better from a long gun. Those velocities surprised me for sure. I do keep a box of these in .44 mag and .45 Colt just in case the lever guns come out for hunting. Very interesting video that makes me feel better about my choice.

    I have a lever action Rossi .44, with a 20” octagonal barrel. In clocking various rounds, I determined right away, that even LeverEvolution rounds are velocity rated on the box from pistol length barrels. For instance, Remington 180-grain Jacketed soft points are rated at 1600fps, but they clock at almost 2200 FPS out of the 20” barrel.

Yeah, I did notice you utilized Henry rifles in your video, but I'm not a Henry fan when it comes to knock about truck and ATV guns. Your tests really caught my attention because of the velocities and bullet expansion as I was just about convinced that all currently available commercial handgun caliber ammo was getting puny and headed down a rutted, dirt goat path from there. Keep up the great work!

    .357 magnum fan for years, GP100 fixed sight revolver, 77/357 bolt rifle and Desert eagle .357 magnum... all of them work fantastic with Federal 158 gr JSP and so easy to reload. Now the 125 grain will stop almost anything especially in a HP. you can get bigger and heavier firearms but a .357 in a 125 grain in a close combat situation will blow your ears out and stop the threat.

    When I chronographed some 357 and 44 in lever rifles(20 inch Stainless Rossi 92s) I didn't get great velocity, 1350s, from the Fiocchi 44 mag 240 SPs, but got 1787 from American Eagle 158gr SP in 357. I did not get to test them in my handguns, but will at some point, so would assume the Fiocchi are fairly mild from a handgun.
    Even at 1350 those 240 soft points dropped a 200 pound hog DRT at 60 yards.
    The lever rifles are nice and light, compact, and recoil is minimal, so walking the woods with one is comfortable. I have scout scopes on them and they are good to about 125 before you need to do serious holdover.

    I have one of each lever action rifle; one a .357 mag., and the other a .44 mag. Your video has me excited about trying either next deer season!
    Loved the 1776 part. Funny when the velocity matches your shirt!

    This is common with both calibers. Exceptional carbine cartridges. This is covered by several other videos on YT. You will also see the 10mm "over perform" in a carbine. Great vid.

    Excellent video and information about these rounds!👍Very impressive ammunition for these weapons! Great job sir!👍👍
    We've discussed this before. I haven't used factory centerfire loads in over four decades. I cast and load my own. Using a 20" 357Mag levergun, and the old Thompson 150gr Cast SWCGCHP, and a healthy dose of AA#7 in a 357 case, I regularly exceed 1650fps. Obliterates hogs of any size.
    In a 45 Colt Henry Big Boy, and a cast 255gr SWC Keith bullet and a warm load of Unique or Universal powder, 1045fps to 1100fps is easily done. And it hits like a panzer doing 80 mph!
    Pistol cartridge leverguns are serious about getting the job done in my neck of the woods.😬

      @@ToolsandTargets Reckon so! Do a good bit of damage. 44 is quite effective on whitetail inside 125 yards for. Many, many 1 shot stops from 44s in our family.

    I found this ammo test interesting, I've used the 44 mag in my Ruger super Blackhawk hunter to take a deer last year, this year I'll be using this ammo out of my Marlin 1894 rifle, I'm looking to get some of the 357 ammo to use to deer hunt with my Marlin 1894csbl. I would like to see the new hammer down in both calibers tested as well to see how they compare to the Hornady rounds.

  • @PlainsmansCabin
    @PlainsmansCabin Рік тому +1

    Please keep the clothing simulation on the jelly test, its more meaningful, imo! Thanks for all the great testing!
    Hornady’s website says the .44 Leverevolution is tested out of a 7.5” barrel and the .357 out of an 8” barrel.
    I haven’t looked at a box of either ammo in person, but usually it says on most boxes what the barrel length the listed performance was tested in too.

    • @ToolsandTargets
      @ToolsandTargets  Рік тому

      Nothing listed on the box. Strange name choice for ammo that they test out of handguns.🤷‍♂️

  • @kevinnewberry1116
    @kevinnewberry1116 Рік тому

    And in checking, Hornady used a, 8" Vented test barrel for the 1440 FPS rating. Like everyone has an 8" .347 Magnum revolver. Basically what you've got is a compromise where velocity will be lower from a 6" revolver, and a good bit slower from a 4" revolver. Revolvers people are more likely to have, and if they don't handload, they probably don't know what to expect from an 18 1/2" barrel.

    I use the same Chrono as you do, with the Henry Big Boy X - 17.4" barrel I see 1790fps with Buffalo Bore Hard Cast 180gr, 1750fps with 158gr Remington SJHP and over 2000fps with Remington 125gr SJHP (these make a mess with watermelons😁). Like you I had to do a double take, but it seems to hold up looking at what others are getting. The magnums really step it up in a longer barrel, case capacity matters in this case.

    • @ToolsandTargets
      @ToolsandTargets  Рік тому

    225g flying at 1800fps.....SICK! Hornady ain't scared to put powder in these. I need some of these for my 629 Classic and ding some steel at 200yds. Great test!! I'd keep the cloth material, it really shows what a hunting/defense designed round can or cannot do.

    Great video, just what I was after. The box velocities are based on a 7.5" barrel for the 44 and 8" for the 357 per the Hornady website. Last season I shot a doe at 80 yards with the 44 mag Leverevolution from my Henry. Deer ran about 30 feet and dropped. The round devastated the shoulder it hit. The FTX bullets are great stuff. I use the FTX 44 Special Critical Defense on foxes and coyotes. They don't over penetrate and result in a quick kill. However, range is limited with the Specials as they drop. The 44 mags run pretty flat out past 100 yards.
    One other item - Hornady customer support advised me to not use the XTP bullets out of a rifle as they may come apart due to the long barrel's higher velocity. I was advised that the FTX are fine out of a long gun, as evidenced by the fact that the FTX is used in the Leverevolution rounds.

    The box velocity is for a specific handgun barrel. This is gennerally 4''-8'' long. 357 mag & 44 mg benefit from the carbine barrels. The numbers you are getting re correct.
