    FYI, The end of Jan 2021 NVIDIA drivers killed my recording. I turned down all the MSFS settings and it was running at @20% GPU and CPU, but opening OBS or Shadow play sent the usage up to 100% (without even recording!) and I just got a laggy video. Driver rollback fixed the problem. Definitely agree to turn off MSFS VSYNC if you have Nvidia GSYNC on the GPU and Monitor. :)

    To all those who insist that its unplayable at less than 40fps...... this proves otherwise. Dont go chasing fps. Smoothness is the key. Dont set your game to aim for 50fps. You are telling it to go for frames over quality. I set mine at 20fps. The game is then less stressed and will concentrate on quality and still deliver way over 20. You are not limiting the fps to what you put but simply stating a minimum. I have medium hardware and am very happy with the results.

    Thanks - lots of useful stuff here. I'm pretty sure the LOD settings have the main impact on the CPU - so as part of the tuning process you need to watch the milliseconds Main Thread vs. milliseconds GPU (which are what drives the "Limited by GPU|CPU" message) - so you got to 37FPS from 25 (full marks) but also ended up being more firmly "Limited by GPU" implying you can up the CPU usage a bit (by increasing the LOD) without impacting frame rates. There's a reasonable-sounding argument "limited by GPU" is smoother than "limited by CPU" because the latter needs a bit of capacity left to cope with a more bursty workload, so you don't want to tune the CPU to the max.

    • @Aengus42
      @Aengus42 3 роки тому +1

      Sorry, new to all this. What's LOD please?

    • @ViewBothSides
      @ViewBothSides 3 роки тому +1

      @@Aengus42 L.O.D is "Level of Detail", and the MSFS Options -> General -> Graphics has a couple of settings "Terrain Level of Detail" and "Objects Level of Detail". Each sets how much detail you want to see in those drawn objects. Everything modelled such as a plane or building in MSFS actually contains multiple models LOD1, LOD2, LOD3 ... e.g. the same house can be drawn as a simple cube with a house painted on it, or a high-detailed model with 3D chimneys, windows etc. so the sim initially draws the 'cube' version when you're a long way away but will switch to the more detailed model as you get nearer. With the LOD settings you're telling the sim your comfort level with how shit things can look, in the goal of improving performance. Counter-intuitively MSFS is sometimes limited by your CPU (nearly all other games are always limited by your GPU) and also counter-intuitively the 'LOD settings' are one of the few things you can dial back to reduce the load on your CPU and so speed up your FPS if you are "limited by CPU". The in-game FPS tool (e.g. at 3:18) tells you the *time* being taken by your CPU and GPU to render each frame, whichever is the longest is what's limiting your frame rate. [Final note: actually AI traffic is what most hits your CPU, so if you did have a CPU constraint (lots of people with weak CPU's who've spent money on a decent graphics card have this issue without realising it), then turning AI traffic off is the biggest gain.]

    I saw 3090's pop up on Ebuyer on Thursday, clicked buy, installed it yesterday. I gave up bothering to wait for a 3080 or an AMD card and just figured it'll last a while. 3090's aren't as hard to get because of the poor price to performance ratio difference but just look on Stock checkers. Very happy with it, even though I did have to buy a new case only a month after buying another new case. The MSI Suprim X is BIG. Then discovered that the pipes for my AIO cooler aren't long enough to reach the new extended distance so it's bodged in there. Hey ho.

    This game is a balancing act.
    Too low a resolution and your cpu is the bottleneck.
    Too high and your gpu becomes the bottleneck.
    The key is getting the cpu and gpu timings as close to each other as possible :)
    Btw, I'm also using a 2080ti and a 4k monitor and I find that lowering the resolution scaling (even as low as 60) doesn't make that much difference and is preferable to actually lowering the resolution.
    It's always better to run your monitor in it's native resolution :)

    Sorry to hear that you haven't received your new video card yet. I got my ASUS ROG Strix 3090 OC card on Wednesday and got it installed on Thursday. Hoping to finalize some VR setup tomorrow. I haven't got MSFS 2020 yet. I did the alpha and beta but because it didn't have VR initially I didn't purchase it. Been doing X-Plane instead. Now that MSFS 2020 has VR I am considering getting it. I mostly fly GA in either VFR or light IFR. Unfortunately I have been working so much I haven't had much time to play this year, just did an 8 day week last week. Looks like things might smooth out a little in the near future and only have to do 6 day work weeks every other week, but I will wait and see if that really happens.
    Your videos are great as ever with lots of helpful information. Keep up the great work and I hope your move is finished soon, because in general moving sucks. lol Yeah there is the new place to look forward to, it's the getting there that sucks. :-)

    23-31 FPS flying between the buildings in the same spot. Looking off in the distance toward the smaller buildings actually killed the FPS more to 18-21.
    GPU trying to use every last bit of that 8GB, and 18-20GB of Ram.
    At a more reasonable 1440p, 26-34fps, not much of a difference really. But my GPU wasn't screaming in agony now 😅

    I have the same GPU running 4K, but notice a huge decrease in AA quality if I don't use TAA. Also for me there's a rather noticeable visual quality difference between Ultra and High for the clouds. Glass cockpit refresh rate is unusable for me at less than 'high' unfortunately--would love those extra frames... the displays loose their smoothness, and just look like a 1fps screen. Turning down Texture Supersampling makes lines on runways look fuzzy when more than about 100 feet (distance varies with settings) in front of you... Low AA filtering has similar effect but not as drastic; though if too low, your supersampling can't compensate.

    Three things.
    1. No, don't always update your video drivers. - Unless you have the latest generation card, OR, you know for fact (from the release notes) that they address an issue specific to your model/generation of card. In most cases the latest drivers will only be slightly slower if anything for older cards (extra branching), without adding anything useful. (If it aint broke....)
    2. Geforce Experience - Why Oh Why! What a pointless load of complete bloatware. Have you actually seen the number of services it adds? Ask yourself, is it doing anything really useful? do I need it?
