Is The HCAR King or Cringe? .30-06 Heavy Counter Assault Rifle

- The Ohio Ordinance Heavy Counter Assaults Rifle (HCAR) is a dream gun of mine, so I was stoked to work with AP to get it on the channel. Despite my love of it I can't pull any punches. There are pros but many cons...still I love this dang thing. So the question is...is it King or Cringe?

For those worried about resell value, it is custom painted by Admin, that makes it at least worth double the original price.
It's an hcar, the things have doubled in price in the last 2 years, I don't think people are worried about resale value
Something to consider, 30 06 not being a "military " caliber can make it more accessible to people. And its easy to reload.
sure if you can find ammo i have a 30-06 and since covid roughly stores, online or off rarely carry ammo at least until recently.

Very scary.
Hey admin, pro tip for rucking with a belt kit, use an ALICE style frame. The short back and narrower hip pad helps a lot with managing your back/hips real estate. Also highly recommend a buttpack or a couple of deeper GP pouches in the back to form a sort of shelf for the ruck to sit on, it really helps distribute the load in a way that hip belts don't
As a note on HCAR in games, the HCAR recently got added to Payday 2 with the name of the Akron HC. Very beefy.
And I'm guessing you need 5 rounds to eliminate an opponent. Like most imbecilic modern shooter games
@@moenibus in Payday, a shot to the head will typically kill an opponent and make their helmet fly off in funny ways. Lots of the enemies on higher difficulties wear heavier body armor, but with the right build and if you can aim they’ll go down quick. And then there’s the bulldozers.

I have so much respect for Ian...
He started a website, which became a channel, dedicated to preserving a compendium of firearms design solely for the sake of posterity, a visual library of mechanical history.
The fact that he has grown in popularity has more to do with sheer integrity and factual display of mechanical breakdown than almost any other guntuber. His format is simply a gift to future generations.
Nothing like building your credibility from scratch, and having it bear fruit worldwide.

The BAR was in Fallout New Vegas as part of the Dead Money DLC, personally I think it was underrated and the best thing out of that DLC.

@@kempodle4665 yeah man I just pumped myself with chems and made of with all the loot
I loved sneaking out every single gold bar in that dlc. I stacked them in my home. feelsgoodman
The only problem was the spread, because FNV doesn't have a true recoil system that is integrated into the spread of the gun, which makes the BAR less accurate than a pistol lol
The color on those paint cans is stamped on the bottom. Awesome video, as always! So cool to have the legend Ian on the channel!! Love the HCAR so happy you got one in your collection! Keep up the great work!

That shot at the beginning with the muzzle flash through the nods in the dark was sick af. Might have to steal that idea for one of my videos
As a former M240 gunner I felt that ruck portion. One tip I have is tighten up the sling a bit, keep the rifle pretty much parallel with the ground and rest your forearms on it (sorta trex arm it) it can help keep it in place, and is also pretty comfortable.
Yes and never throw a rifle on top of the ruck. If you stumble and fall, the rifle hits you in the neck.

It`s almost time to make battle rifles great again, this is a good start!
i agree
yeah especially since the military is trying to move toward a more universal rifle, although i think close to medium range weaponry are gonna stay the standard for civilians and other militaries for the foreseeable future its still a neat concept to play around with, trying to make a rifle and round that can preform excellently at range and close quarters.
It’s all coming full circle. Carry handle height sights, now battle rifles and the next big insurgence are the tactical lever guns. I’m gonna start making and selling custom ground rocks called Cains. It’s the downward spiral lol

The 29 round mags are really nice, but what's even better are the triplex 10 rounders.

My grandfather was a marine who fought in the Chosin reservoir, anytime he wanted to tell someone to calm down he would always say "Take your pack off". He would also call candy "pogey bait" which our family just recently googled and realized it wasn't quite the cute name for candy we thought it was.
The military always repurposes words like that. So to us, it does mean candy or snacks.

I think they named it appropriately; a counter assault team is typically used for static site defense. I would definitely not want to hump that beast through the mountains.
In which case I'd want a belt though...
@@bobbertbobberson6725 i believe ohio has an automatic version
@@hitman_zulu And still should have a belt. If weight isn't an issue as I'm in the defensive, then I want as high of a sustained rate of fire as I can to repel enemy assault
@@bobbertbobberson6725 I don’t think it’s meant to replace or augment a machine gun. It seems to fill the role of a marksman rifle but more volume and power to keep enemies down.
@@Nediac800 And we dropped the BAR after WW2 because that concept is dumb. Others like the Bren or DP-28 were treated as machine guns with larger capacity magazines; they too were hampered by lack of a belt.
Yes the USMC have brought back the automatic rifle concept but in a platform that's not obscenely overweight and can still be used as a rifle.
When the HCAR was first announced I got worried because I thought if the Marine Corps caught wind of it they'd try to adopt it as a service rifle.
They don't have that kinda budget lol these are hella expensive

In regards to the price, I have talked with guys from OOW. They only make about 30-60 HCARs and BARs a month total. The profitability is already low compared to the FA belt guns they make. After material cost went up and demand higher than they could keep up with even before Garands video they needed to raise prices. The reasons checked out to me as it is a small batch rifle made by some really awesome guys. Pretty much comes down to not being able to scale production of civilian SA firearms, not to mention no one can consistently produce quality new production BAR/HCAR mags. With all this long winded message I would still buy one if I had the money to blow lol
If demand increases but the supply cannot a price increase only makes sense. A larger company may not be able to use that excuse but OO definitely can
I want to know the total cost of production per unit. If the retail price is more than 40 points over cost it's a ripoff.
Ive been looking at these for years, long before the recent string of videos covering them, and honestly it was clear from my independent research that they are a small American company with skilled workers and low volume. Just because I cant personally afford one right now doesnt mean im going to get mad about the price and whine like a child about it. Im bringing this up because ive seen this behavior surprisingly often online and it showcases an embarrassing like of understanding. How dare they charge more for a boutique hand made firearm than an AR15....
I bought an HCAR from its initial run when they offered custom serial numbers. Very happy with mine. As to Ohio Ordnance Works, I've known and done business with them for over 15 years. I've visited their facility many times and have always been treated graciously by the owner and his family, as well as all of the staff I've encountered over the years. Last time I was there, a few racks of 1918A3s and HCARS were in various stages of assembly, and I was glad to see that again. They'd been offline for a while at that point. I've been through their manufacturing facilities and have a pretty good idea of their production capability. These are a very low volume item, compared with most of the industry. I also understand, in my own business, how much the price of materials has gone up in the past two years. (Even some off-the-shelf hardware items I use regularly have doubled in price.) So I am not going to criticize OOW for raising the price on these, though I understand it came as a bit of a shock to the market. Look at another "boutique" firearm in comparison, the FN 249 semi auto. That thing came out at over $7k from the start and is much higher now, I believe. FN is a far larger operation than OOW, even if you look at only their S.C. facility, never mind Liege. So one has to keep a perspective and proper context in this.
The standard military loading for the 30-06 does not extract the full power potential you would expect from the size of the case, so it is feasible for the .308 to get close to its performance of approx. 2,800fps for a 150gr bullet. But commercial ammo for 30-06 tends to be full house loads that make use of the extra case size and so generate approx. 200-300fps more than the military ammo and thus cannot be matched by the .308 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-06_Springfield
