My friend Martin, retired professor at SOCC College, Ashland, Oregon and now passed on, carried the BAR during the Korean era. He was 6'4 and 240, and he said it " shook his eye teeth..." to fire it.
HCAR's folding charging handle is cool and very similar to the Canadian FAL C1A1 and C2 both also had bolt lock open on empty and a bolt hold open device.
Regarding the top rail: It looks like the current top rail is dovetailed into the top of the receiver, extending it would add maybe 10-20 dollars to the price of the gun. The dovetail already extends all the way through the lockup hump so just lengthening it is totally feasible. I think the actual reason they haven't implemented it is because that's the location for the markings.(which would be a silly reason, but so be it)
I always thought the HCAR was a cool concept but after seeing your overview i really appreciate the time and effort OO put into developing this beast..i definitely wouldnt mind owning one if they werent super pricey and unobtanium

Very cool black tip demo at the end! If anything it shows how impressive armor has become. Level IV plates are surprisingly affordable for how capable they are.
According to family legend, sometime around 1958 my grandfather (who was a member of one of the U.S. Army Reserve's competitive shooting teams at the time) needed to run a water line from a newly drilled well to his house. To do this, so the story goes, he dug a trench between the well and one of the house's concrete foundation walls, then used a sandbagged M1903 Springfield and a handful of Cartridges, Armor Piercing, Caliber .30, M2 to drill a hole in the wall. He _may_ have inadvertently assassinated the furnace with the shot that finally penetrated the wall. As with all legends, I can offer no hard evidence that this one is true, although we did find a partly used box of 1950s-vintage M2 ammunition in his sock drawer when he moved to assisted living a few years ago... ;)
I imagined a modernised version of the FN/FAL as used by the British Army as the L1A1 SLR from that very familiar cocking handle, later replaced by a round knob for faster cocking in British use, i really like the HCAR design and layout, would be good as with the SLR if it had a straight 30 round magazine as used on the L1A1 from the L4A4 Bren in 7.62. looks like a pleasure to shoot. I got to fire a privately owned SLR years after they went out of service with the British Army i could happily carry a HCAR instead of L85. Nice video thanks for showing this.
So this is what the Combat Rifle of Fallout 4 would look like, if it was made in the real world. A while ago, Ian showed us the 10mm pistol. What's next, the standard laser rifle? I'm up for it.
'Here we have the AER 12 laser rifle. Most of you are familiar with the AER 9 since that's the standard issue and more rugged, but the 12 was issued to specialist units before the Great War. Now, most of these have degraded, but Mick and Ralph have restored this unit to almost new condition. Note the focusing crystal is new as the originals were sadly scavenged to repair other rifles ... Just got an HCAR recently myself, they’re a neat gun! Interesting to learn about the impetus that brought it to market. A quick comment, if using OOW HCAR mags, they will lock open on an empty mag. If you look at them, they have a rectangular cut made on the back of the mag that interfaces with the hold open mechanism. If using surplus BAR mags, that cut is obviously not there, so you don’t get bolt hold open on an empty mag. I’m curious to find out if making a similar cutout in surplus BAR mags will work properly with the bolt hold open mechanism. I’ll be trying it soon!
@@terrorform242 I honestly have not had enough time behind the gun shooting different types of ammo to know just yet. I got a few hundred rounds of PPU 150gr soft point ammo, and that seems to be doing fine in my limited use.
My standard version OOW Bar shoots sub MOA. Recoil from the 30-06 is like a .22lr in that heavy gun especially since I have a big muzzle brake on it. The 30round mags really make them a lot of fun and I think something that can go head to head with the Bren.
A friend of mine in Indiana got to hold and handle one of the first production HCAR'S at Mario's gun shop. Awesome and lighter weight than the original. Amazing what modern technology can do.
.30-06 AP flying through 3/8ths of ar500 steel is impressive. I'd have never guessed that. That's a 117-year old infantry cartridge defeating basically level 4 armor
No, Ireland has not "...adopted a new rifle." The only move in that area was to restore some of the FN FALs held in storage to service as Designated Marksman Rifles, to be issued to the spotter of a sniper team.
@gloin10 yes, and talking from friends in the army, those FN FAL DMR conversions were not successful because the Department of Defence purchased standard FAL parts for the bolt and receivers of the rifles, which are not condusive to consistent accurate marksmanship. They should've bought National Match parts (as advised by the Army) but that would've cost more money. And if there's one thing the Irish Department of Defence is infamous for, it's spending as little as money as possible.

With how hard core the military is going with battle rifles, I feel like in an alternate universe someone could've gotten the military to pick this up lmao Edit; lol I'm just joking you guys haha
@@rewrite1239 The Military knew the 6.8 SPC would not be able to do what they wanted, hence the .308 Action size rifle with a dual component cartridge case design that could handle 80,000 PSI easily and be capable of going up to 100,000 PSI before entering over-pressure range. Using a hardened tungsten core inside the 6.8 diameter shell so when it hits XSAPI it peels the copper jacket back and the tungsten core punches a neat hole through the .30-06 AP rated plates 100% of the time on the first shot.
A little birdie told me that an overwhelmingly successful alien invasion, followed by a human rebellion, would make for precisely the circumstances needed for this design to be procured :^)
Just wanted to say Ian, that I've been watching your content since at least 2016. Once I found out about the HCAR back in... 2017? I was curious if you'd ever would cover it, and now that There's been this 'resurgence' of interest surrounding the HCAR, I'm glad to see you FINALLY cover this INSANELY expensive but insanely cool firearm. I hope that with more attention surrounding this particular firearm, it'll drive the cost of the weapon down, because last I checked on there website, there's like a waiting list for a couple years ahead in line, and they also run anywhere from 5K-8K MSRP. Its just ludicrously expensive but damn would I love to own one.
I had an HCAR for a short time. About 2 years or so which is short for me and gun ownership. I paid about $3,600 for it. Had been eyeing a SCAR-H which at the time was about $2,800-ish but came across one of these instead and bought it. Honestly, a very well built gun, the example I had was quite reliable. Magazines were the tough part to source and quite expensive and of course .30-06 was never "cheap" but surplus M2 ball was readily available at the time so kept costs down a bit. Definitely not worth the asking price in a semi auto only format. In full auto, I've been told it manages the recoil quite well and in that role it may be worth something. Kind of like the Kriss Vector being just a cool showpiece in semi auto only. Anyhow, I do have fond memories of the gun in general but somebody wanted it far more than I did and ended up parting ways. I pretty much got away from the more modern tactical rifles like that after the fact and ultimately was far more interested in their regular BAR replicas. But didn't want to spend the money for something.
Honestly it could make sense today. Imagine needing a portable long distance battle rifle to suppress enemies at long range. It will penetrate up to level 4 body Armour, average brick and concrete walls.
@Ian, wonder if they'd custom make an ambi safety just for you if you ask nicely. I'd love to have an HCAR some day, but oh so expensive. 11.75 pounds with a 16" barrel is a far cry from the 20 pounds of the original, and perfectly acceptable in a semi-auto .30-06. My AR10, fully kitted out, is around 12 pounds, so this would just be a tiny bit heavier once you add optics, or about the same if you just opted for a red dot.

I don't think I'd ever complain about a longer FW video. Nonetheless, great video as per usual.
Regarding the top rail:
It looks like the current top rail is dovetailed into the top of the receiver, extending it would add maybe 10-20 dollars to the price of the gun. The dovetail already extends all the way through the lockup hump so just lengthening it is totally feasible.
I think the actual reason they haven't implemented it is because that's the location for the markings.(which would be a silly reason, but so be it)
That intro was great. You make for a great BARtender.
I always thought the HCAR was a cool concept but after seeing your overview i really appreciate the time and effort OO put into developing this beast..i definitely wouldnt mind owning one if they werent super pricey and unobtanium
I would love to own one if it was full auto or I could convert it to full auto.
That was a great intro Ian!
I'm very happy this HCAR is finally getting it's respect and interest by Ian especially and other people on YT as-well who've made great detailed vidoes on this Rifle . One thing maybe most of the viewer's here don't know Ohio
Ordinance 's HCAR was first shown by Larry Vickers channel *Vickers tactical* almost a decade ago . Again absolutely fell in love with the beast the first time i saw it 🍻 .
Ian, I always love when you get to pew pew on the channel, and try to do so when possible. I helps me with my 'recoil therapy' needs. 😜🤙
Love their modern take on the BAR sort of a what would browning do, and it comes off very nicely!
Forget the weapon. That Paddy Cam is awesome.
I love the Irish deface forces camo. I turned in all mine when I left as there are legal restrictions on wearing it for a civilian. It is being retired for a more common camo so supply is cheaper. Looking fresh Ian.
"Irish deface forces" lol
Gotta be one of the most visibly appealing firearms I’ve ever seen. They took the BAR and gave it that MK 14 rizz.
Big shout to all my Irish collectively having an aneurysm because Ian somehow got his hands on some paddyflage.
Very cool black tip demo at the end! If anything it shows how impressive armor has become. Level IV plates are surprisingly affordable for how capable they are.
Some audio issues on this one.
Thanks!
Opening your video with the Marine Corps Hymn is always a good move 🤘👏
Oohrah! Semper Fi!
That intro was actually fire. Especially if you know the background to the episode and his gear for this episode

The dimpled barrel also makes it look like the air cooling holes in old school machineguns.
Best gun youtuber of all time no disrespect to the others they are all great but this is the og right here
So this is what the Combat Rifle of Fallout 4 would look like, if it was made in the real world.
A while ago, Ian showed us the 10mm pistol. What's next, the standard laser rifle?
I'm up for it.
Combat shotgun! take a PPSH, and.... ;)
@@Qaianna ah, good ol' "New Vegas" ;)

Amen. An assault rifle which looks like a mucked about Lewis gun - ick! An assault rifle whih looks like a HCAR - cool!
@@fruitbat4429 yeah that weapon was ugly, dumb and made no sense :(
as some kind of actual machine gun for power armour/super mutants it might be ok?
but it had nothing to do with the "assault rifles" of game lore
and it's stats sucked
and like about all the firearms way WAY to big and clunky especially when modded
10mm modded was like a frikkin joke!
Sigh
I absolutely ❤️❤️❤️ the intro. Thank you!
I’ll be trying it soon!
are they picky about ammo? a few videos out there on YT show some malfunctions which i assume were ammo related or possibly a surplus mag issue.
This weapon is on my wish list. Has been for a while.
A friend of mine in Indiana got to hold and handle one of the first production HCAR'S at Mario's gun shop. Awesome and lighter weight than the original. Amazing what modern technology can do.
I love the concept and the final design, I’d love to have one
All you need is like ~$5,000 I think...
Really cool intro Ian!
Also that gun really looks the Ohio Ordnance
The HCAR is on the top of my must have list.
Great video, thanks!
That mustache and beard should be a required uniform item for ALL soldiers
2m subscribers later, its kind of charming that Ian and crew still forget to check levels sometimes 🥰
15:30 Ian, you should have said "Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you AR500 swiss cheese."
.30-06 AP flying through 3/8ths of ar500 steel is impressive. I'd have never guessed that. That's a 117-year old infantry cartridge defeating basically level 4 armor
I hope that intro was as fun to make as it was to watch
Saw you in the Irish DPM and having never heard anything about the HCAR before was wondering if Ireland had adopted a new rifle.
No, Ireland has not "...adopted a new rifle."
The only move in that area was to restore some of the FN FALs held in storage to service as Designated Marksman Rifles, to be issued to the spotter of a sniper team.
I’m so happy you got around to doing this rifle
I've always wanted one of these just because, and this is the definition of a "just because" rifle
0:07 FROM THE HALLS OF MONTEZUMMMAAAAA!!!!
I always wondered what a bar would look like with a grenade launcher on it .👍✌️
You monster. The m203 railed version would fit.
That would likely be the Falchion rifle from The Order 1886
And yes it's as cursed as it sounds

Your opening sequence is absolute genius.
That intro had me thinking I was watching administrative results. you got to do this more Ian
I think that’s who he borrowed the HBAR from
Nevermind his had a different paint job, but they did do a video about it together

Thank you for such a great channel, it’s so simple yet so much fun to watch. I love this opener with the uniform.🎉 the idea that UA-cam has some problem with this channel, is absurd.
0:25 An absolutely fantastic transition.
Nice opening sequences Ian, and Jordan.

With how hard core the military is going with battle rifles, I feel like in an alternate universe someone could've gotten the military to pick this up lmao
Edit; lol I'm just joking you guys haha
I mean it would work just fine.
@@Stephen85 Besides cost and the disassembly being ludicrously complex
They really should have entered one of these in .270 for the Army's 6.8 competition.
Just to make a point.
I got an HCAR last year after I sold my SCAR 17. I'm loving it!!!
I’m gonna pick one up this weekend . What barrel length did you get ?
I've got a solid bar for the future BAR.
1945: “So, a couple of Nazis walk into a BAR.”
2023: “So, a couple of Nazis walk into an HCAR.”
Doesn’t have the same ring to it, sadly.
I hoped Administrative Results would make an appearance as you did in his HCAR video.
For me this is the gun that if I had to have one rifle this would be it.
My absolute favorite rifle of all time. Crazy power. Beautiful firearm. Saving my pennies to buy 1
Better save a lot. The price jumped up a grand in a couple years
They’re almost 5k but if you could get your hands on one cherish it, because a lot of us will envy you! 👍🏽
Pls don't buy a 5k gun brother stack your bread and buy a house 💀💀
I want one of these so bad,but my bank account and bills tell me otherwise
@Ian, wonder if they'd custom make an ambi safety just for you if you ask nicely. I'd love to have an HCAR some day, but oh so expensive. 11.75 pounds with a 16" barrel is a far cry from the 20 pounds of the original, and perfectly acceptable in a semi-auto .30-06. My AR10, fully kitted out, is around 12 pounds, so this would just be a tiny bit heavier once you add optics, or about the same if you just opted for a red dot.
