The last full Queen concert my husband and I attended was in 1982 at "The Bowl" in Milton Keynes UK. We also saw them at Live Aid in 1985.
But back to the concert, the atmosphere even before Queen took the stage was electric, you could feel it build. When they came out on stage we all just erupted, the roar was huge, Freddie was magnetic, you couldn't take your eyes off him, don't get me wrong the rest of the band was magnificent, but Freddie just seemed to have this aura. It was the best time of our lives, we couldn't talk above a whisper for the next three days because we sang our hearts out. My husband even said that Freddie was the only man that he would turn for, that's how big an effect he had on us, I have been a fan of Queen and particularly Freddie since 1973/4 and I'm now 73 and still as big a fan now as I was then.

@@joannedarley1893 It was a great show, as was the one in 1980 I went to. I'd been a fan of Billy Squier since his "In the Dark" album. In fact I saw him as the main act about a year or so earlier. There are some videos here on UA-cam from his "In the Dark" tour from '81. As a matter of fact in the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody" there is a scene when Queen is playing Madison Square Garden during the Game tour, I was in the seats for that one. :)

"Those backgrounds"- Yes, Freddie was amazing but we also need to give props to drummer Roger Taylor who was an awesome singer in his own right and did a lot of the high notes in those harmonies.

    • @krollpeter
      @krollpeter 4 роки тому +13

Right. It is Mr. Mercury for the most part, the choir and everything, topped up a little with frills and thrills by Mr. Taylor.
Certainly they could never do anything near that live, and Mr. Mercury was live not that kind of a precise singer. On stage he was a diva who wanted to entertain his audience, an entirely different person than off-stage or in the studio.

Please consider reacting to Queen's iconic performance at Live Aid. I remember watching Live Aid from our family room in North Hollywood. When Queen came on I couldn't stay seated, I had to stand up. My mom walked by, asked why I was standing, then stood next to me - then my sister, then my dad. All four of us clapping, cheering and completely drawn into a moment where time stood still! There was so much drama about Queen participating in Live Aid, but criticism melted away after they took the stage.

Yes, this was a perfect performance, recorded in the studio under optimal conditions. The version I love best is 1981 at Montreal. That was completely LIVE, and there were just as good, if not better considering the conditions. I have watched several performances of this song but Montreal is the best. Freddie's vocal runs are outstanding, as well as his falsetto. It is much more fun watching them, and particularly Freddie, work the stage and the audience, and there are some antics by Freddie that gave me a chuckle. They were not only total coordinated in their parts of the song, but I am surprised they moved around the stage sl well without tripping over one another or their instrument cords. They excelled at EVERYTHING THEY DID. 99% of the time I prefer the LIVE performances, each something special or slightly different from the studio versions, and it is the closest I will ever get to actually watching and listening to them perform.

I saw Queen live back when you could stand right up against the stage. He had the audience in the palm of his hand from the first note. My friends and I were right up front just feet away. It was amazing. The only version I've ever seen get close to this was Jordan Smith. It was a worthy version but there is only one FM.

If you want to experience hearing Freddie live - you should watch three videos: White Queen live at the Odeon, Somebody to Love Montreal 1981 and You Take My Breath Away Hyde Park 1976. The first two videos show the artistry of the band. They were so tight and electric. The third is Freddie playing the piano and singing a gorgeous song. You won't be disappointed.

Great reaction to one of my favourite songs - ever. No matter what I’m listening to at any time , I always come back to this song. As you said it’s every part of the whole which is amazing. The music, the harmonies, the writing , Freddies lead vocals. (I’m a huge Roger fan and as a bonus he looks sooo cute in this clip.). I digress - I’ve always thought the harmonies could be a song on its own and then I hear you say that. Thanks for a wonderful reaction to an incredibly special song. Nobody can do this like Queen.

This video made me subscribe! I love watching vocal coaches but they all do new contemporary music and nobody knows the true music legends like Queen! You staning them for 10 minutes straight is everything! Keep up the good work and I hope to see more classic music in your videos!

I was at Knebworh Park, Milton Keynes, UK for the very last concert Queen ever performed with Freddie. Of course, back then, nobody was ever going to know that. It was a day to remember. It was billed as The Queen Garden Party. The lineup was Belouis Some (never heard of again), Big Country, Status Quo and finally Queen. It was electric. Queen were leagues ahead of even Quo who were experienced performers themselves. Freddie held the crowd in the palm of his hands for the whole show. He understood how to interact with the crowd and bring them into the show. Four very talented musicians who song writing skills and individual performances are what made this the best band ever...... and there were a lot of great bands peaking in 1986. Its not just about the music, it's how you interact with the crowd that makes the difference. In my view, nobody did, or has even come close to match Freddie with this point.

I saw queen back in the early 1980s the show they put was outstanding, Freddie had so much interaction with the crowd, it made you feel part of it, I have many artist live since, and no one real compares to that concert, I broke my heart when Freddie died, they were and are my all time favourite band, it was devastating, you could the world cry out, I am so glad my best friend went to see them live, great memories.........

I was lucky enough to see Queen live twice, but unfortunately they didn't perform Somebody to Love. with that said they were still absolutely, epically fantastic! And Freddie has an indescribable stage Aura that makes literally every gesture and transition he makes, an art in itself, even before he stars to sing!

I was actually in the video for this song right at the beginning which is from the Hyde Park show on 18th September 1976. I'm right in the middle of the screen. I first saw Queen about 3 years earlier in Bradford, England, as support band to Mott the Hoople. I was about 15. Queen blew them off the stage! The support act were best....that doesn't happen often. It was obvious that day that they were going to be massive. Nearly 50 years later they are as big as ever
Anyway, I saw them play 'Somebody to Love' a few times over the following 10 years. I saw them live about 25 times. I can't remember them all. I would often go two nights on the trot. I think this is one of their best songs by a long way and let's be honest, it's a pretty packed field. They wrote some brilliant songs. Somebody to Love is basically the kind of sound you would have heard in a cotton field in the Alabama in 1900. It is a piece of musical genius. The descending bass line is very hypnotic. Deacon was a great bass line creator. The singing guitar that matches Freddie's voice. The drums are difficult to play because you have to double up on the kick drum to get the sound right. It makes your leg ache As you say, it is fantastic musicianship. Speaking as a guitar player and a bit of a drummer too, you can't imagine how difficult it is to get to play as well as Queen do live. I think the first time I saw them sing Somebody to Love was on the 6 and 7 June 1977 at Earl's Court in London.
All four of them are excellent musicians. All multi-instrumentalists and all four able to write global hit records. I think the performance in the link below is just brilliant. Tight as a camels arse in a sandstorm - ua-cam.com/video/aA2IRoPFIn0/v-deo.html
If you watch this, then watch how John's right hand is locked to the snare drum and how he moves in rhythm with the song all the time. Freddie is also rocking with the song as he plays the piano. Roger Taylor's ability to sing and play the drums is amazing. Very few people can do it that well. The whole performance is preposterously good. Nobody should be able to play like this.

You need to react to the live version of this song in Montreal 1981. For a band that was exquisite in the studio they were usually, with some exceptions, even better live. That says so much for their musicianship and overall talent. The very high notes were sung by the drummer Roger Taylor. The 3 singers, Brian, Roger and Freddie's voices blend perfectly. I saw them in 1977 and Freddie's charisma jumps out at you. You can't tear your eyes from him. It was the best concert I ever saw, and I saw many concerts. They were very serious about giving their fans great concerts from day one. Watch Live at the Rainbow 1974, Hammersmith 1975, Montreal 1981, Budapest and Wembley 1986.

yvr kid - Deaky also sang some back up in concert, especially later on like in Budapest and Wembley (I saw them live too in 1980 and he did sing) and a little on recordings including this song, but never lead. He primarily chanted choruses where he didn't need a lot of vocal dexterity. A shame he lacked confidence because I thought his voice was actually not bad.

Queen as a whole, a band was just amazing. Unfortunately the rest of the Band I feel get left on the back burner because they basically had a musical God as they're lead Vocalist. Freddie is still till this day the only Musician who leaves me speechless when I watch him perform

I agree about the beauty of the background harmonies. I believe Freddie had an appreciation for opera which is what Bohemian Rhapsody actually is, and so I think a lot of his his songs are composed with an operatic structure where the background singers are often singing a complementary part to the lead.
