As a former obese person, I definitely agree with a lot of points made. Telling an overweight individual who has a poor diet to just eat less calories is a strategy 90% of the time, destined to fail because there is no long term planning. Incrementally building up good habits, both physically and nutritionally, is a far better approach than one giant step to “perfection”. I know, first hand, that if it feels like punishment (food wise), resentment builds and that’s when the individual quits the journey.
as someone who has lost significant weight, i really appreciate this video. Finding other coping mechanisms for my mental illnesses was a big part of my journey. (therapy in my case). it’s so easy to just tell people “lose weight fatty!!” without looking at the underlying causes which make them over eat. Thanks Jay!
This is more in line with how addiction is dealt with. And for obese, addiction to overeating is often directly related to dealing with things like trauma, stress, and other variables. It's a head thing, not a desire thing. But the one thing that always it always comes back to is that only YOU can break the cycle, nobody else can do it for you.
What people need to really understand is what really causes the excess calories. It's fat. 9 calories per gram. I used to be a carbophobe thinking it caused all my issues. Now I'm eating 200 g of protein a day 200 g of carbs a day and about 30 g of fat. When you start chasing fat out of your diet your body is going to change dramatically. You're going to feel like you're eating twice the amount of food and able to eat food you thought you had to avoid. Your energy will be through the roof. And you'll be hard-pressed to get over 17 or 1800 calories a day. Been dropping weight like crazy doing this with awesome energy. Muscles always feeling full of glycogen. Blood pressure dropped. High volume low calorie healthy whole natural foods.
@@abdfzl I try to hit 185-200g protein, about an equal number in carbs, and fat right around 30g. I'm not really trying to manipulate it. I'm just eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch and then I vary up the dinner a little bit. So it's three times a day I'm eating. All of my training is done in HIT style. I have my body split three ways. Back and shoulders, chest and arms, legs and core. I work out every 3 to 4 days but when I train a train to absolute failure. So for example if I did back and shoulders Tuesday, then chest and arms Friday, legs Monday. I also do 4 to 5 90 minute walks in the morning.
This video is so timely. Just the other day, I came to the conclusion that I eat good 80% of the time, but the other 20% is poor due to stress and trying to cope. I love your approach to incremental changes. I know a drastic switch to something like keto would never be something I could handle long term. It is my bad habits that need to be replaced with good ones.
3 yrs ago I was borderline diabetic was not working out ,making horrible food choices , my doc gave me a come to Jesus talk , I got home and decided to research keto I found a great channel at least I thought so, and by accident really I found Jay's channel same day! So I took the day really watched a ton of videos by both and joined a gym and started my keto the very next day I was motivated by fear really , i also started taking 5 grms of creatine a day- well doing both together worked !!! First couple of weeks were rough but then the fat came off in waves.. 5 months I lost 80lbs ,but my body looked great because hit training works man! I was 60 when I did this full body hit workouts 3 x a week until I lost the fat now it's 2x a week ,as far as keto I'm not as strict I put brown rice ,sweet potatoes and Ezekiel bread into my diet on workout days about 150 grms of carbs for the day ,I eat brown rice or sweet potatoes after my workouts Ezekiel with eggs in the morning pre workout this is working great for me , on non work out days I eat only 50 grams of carbs mostly in the morning - Jay's hit training changed my life
Stress management, making sure that you get enough essential nutrients and sleep will definitely help. There are other changes beyond diet that can be made to achieve that. There might be some problems causing stress which are possible to get rid of completely. More adaptive coping mechanisms and habits can be slowly developed. It's important that the change is perceived as positive.
This is why GLP1 drugs are an absolute game changer as they remove the hedonic drive that compels people to eat too much food and break the stress eating/using food to cope cycle
I will say I can’t say much because I am over weight, so if I say something then people will say you can’t say that cause you’re fat. Anyways, I agree with a lot with what you say. I think making better food choices is by far better than cutting food out from the start. Jay Feldman goes into metabolism and the impact food has on it. I think you guys should check him out. He is on UA-cam and has his own podcast.
A lot is also about what drives the fat person. I remember as a teenager, playing basketball, defense would be like “com’on or let’s go fatboy!” while defending me. It pissed me off and I started working out and dieting.
8/10 it is purely emotional, either as a coping mechanism for trauma or the result of a parent (usually mom) showing love with food and having no respect for your desire to lose weight, ie “one cupcake won’t kill you…i spent hours making these for YOU!”
For those of you struggling with an eating disorder, one of the best things you can do is go on the Ketovore diet (animal based - beef, eggs, butter) for a couple of weeks and here is why: Your body needs fat and protein to feel satiated. Most overweight people are eating a lot of empty calories so the body stays hungry. When you eat a lot of animal fat and protein, your brains chemistry becomes more satiated so it stops sending you the signal to keep eating. When I went Ketovore for a couple of months, I was shocked at how I was never hungry at all. Think about it....1 pound of beef/steak is 1000 calories. Try eating a pound of beef and see if you are still hungry. It is VERY hard to eat a pound of beef. When I ate it, I was sooooooo FULL. And, I just stopped thinking about food. I could literally go 24 hours without eating and I was fine because I have that beef still in me. Also, grassfed butter (which is high in Omega 3), calmed my brain VERY quickly from sugar withdrawals. So if you are struggling, eat as much grassfed beef and butter until you can't eat anymore and watch how your brain chemistry quickly changes. After the 5th day you will see it becomes very hard to keep eating. However, please keep in mind some people can do this diet long term while others cannot. I could not. I need carbs for my hormones and brain to function properly so I slowly started including rice and bananas. The trick is to STAY OFF the snack foods because they are all laced with sugar which is what is the main driver of food addictions. Its almost impossible to find any snack foods without sugar being added to it.
Yes it works but only to a certain extent... I also do the same diet, but i can eat two pounds and still be hungry in a couple of hours... But this is different for everybody i guess... I want to write that every body has his own body type. Mine is so that it's harder for me to go below a certain weight... It's like my body has a limit. First i'll ose weight quickly but then it slows down... After that I need to cut out more calories, but I really do not enjoy living like that... The only carbs I eat are some fruits in the form of berries, apples, pumpkins, ect (almost no tropical fruits). My conclusion is that this diet works but only to a certain extent once you reach your limits of natural weight... After that you need to go against the grain and cut out calories...
@@Oettam_201lbs It's not extreme. You can get every single nutrient you need from animal products. It's easy. High protein, high fat, low carb animal products are nutrient-dense and low calorie.

So true. A drastic abrupt switch will be temporary, at best.
This is just the most amazing approach about diet I've ever heard, for real Jay. Clever clever clever. I'm genuinely impressed.
Smart. The baby steps approach kinda seems to be working with pretty much everything in life.

This is seriously a masterclass in losing fat. Everyone who is in shape trying to get an obese friend to lose fat needs to watch this video.
