Where did you hear this? China's console ban didn't occur until 2000. Before that they had lots of imported consoles and clones (at least for ppl who could afford them). Also , "porting" newer games to NES hardware is essentially making a brand new game. That makes no sense economically. The reason these consoles run old games is, because of the 2000 console ban, only plug-n-play systems were technically legal until 2015. So the "console" had to contain all games inside of it. And fitting hundreds of PS2 or even PSX games on the console would require way more storage. Plus, these are cynical cash grabs, not products designed by people who care about games or gamers. So they want to make them as cheap & deceptive as possible. Making it resemble a PS4 whilst only running NES/MAME games maximizes profits compared to building something actually able to run PS2 games-especially since emulation adds a lot of additional performance overhead. They'd need more storage, more processing power, more RAM and also more expensive controllers with analog sticks. Similarly, older games are just easier to pirate & more widely available for these manufacturers to find online. And their emulators are more mature.

The most recently lifted ban I can find was specifically on Pokemon Unite and Don't Starve. Before that, they stopped approving video games licenses for like a year. They finally started approving new domestic games in April 2022. But by then they'd already put thousands of Chinese game devs out of business. I think they also recently started approving international games again after a year-long pause. They seem to do this kind of stuff every few years.

i read somewhere that making emulators run games 99% perfect is pretty easy. making them run 100% the same as the original is near impossible though and its that 1% that can cause massive sync problems in sound and graphics. good emulators can smooth that out, but bad emulators... well, youre looking at it.
That is true though 99% is still quite a high number. More like 90%. Good emulators can help but most of the time they can't. The only way to get games to run borderline flawlessly is to individually tweak the ROMS and the emulator for each of them. That's what Nintendo did on the Wii virtual console.

Many years ago I worked for a famous UK based videogame retailer and during the ps2 era We'd sell those controllers with the store logo stuck in that spot. It usually was the first thing to break on them, just before the d-pad.
In defense of the SNES emulator, Yoshi's Island is actually one of, if not the hardest SNES games to emulate properly due to the chips used on the cartridge.
Sure back then but game paks like the SD2SNES not only do flawless Super FX support but even Super GameBoy now & these Paks are more affordable now than they were when 1st released. Overall saying, with a little effort these days, it can be properly emulated.
In the early '90s I had an NES cart (2 actually) that had maybe 40 NES games in each of them, and they played perfectly. Great times checking out all the games with my cousin

08:00 just a tidbit: when you press both directions in the same axis at the same time, the character won't move because the controller should be using a +1/-1 signal for the XY axis, and since you are pressing both, it gives a 0 (+1 -1).
So actually for Sonic 2, that bottom of the screen glitch also happens on the actual console and only in Emerald Hill. It's a simple raster glitch making the 2 bottom rows of pixel scroll differently than the rest of the screen

Metal Slug can get slow, but it's worse on this system. The emulators are unoptimized and some of the ROM files have been modified. This creates strange delays in controller inputs and slowdown during sequences of playing games.
actually, metal slug slows down because it was supposed to slow down, it's a pretty weird design decision, i played various ports of the game, and if you look closely and carefully at the game when it slows down, you will realize that this is not frame drop, it's slow motion.
If I recall correctly it was an issue with the mvs version(arcade) updating the logic twice per frame, bug or bad code on snk's part. I own a mvs arcade system with metal slug and it slows down the same way every time. I think only ms1 and ms2 have that problem. MsX fixed the issues. Most the releases are being emulated, so they show the same issue.
They were porting games to the NES as gaming was illegal in China. However bootleg NES consoles were so incredibly common that porting to the NES was a good choice as most people would have a NES.

Apparently, the character duplication in the fighting games, are due to the fact that they couldn’t get palettes to work for singular characters, so they just made dupes with different palettes so people can play the same character

Funny thing about graphical glitches on Sonic 2 - I have a PAL model 2 mega Drive, and because of the way PAL systems frequently work you get black bars at the top and bottom. But one thing you might find interesting is that Sonic 2 in this case has graphical corruption along the bottom of the screen on real hardware. The reason you're probably not used to seeing this is because on an NTSC version of the game you have at most 224 visible lines, and chances are even then some of those are in the overscan area of most televisions, On PAL though... Well, you might have 240 lines, but... The TV display is intended for 288 lines, and at a bare minimum will display 267 lines on most televisions, so you can see the bottom edge of the screen where it transitions from graphics to black... And... Yeah. Corruption is common. Incidentally if you have a modern TV with unusually small overscan on the sides (most 16:9 televisions are in this category by default when they show 4:3 material at correct aspect ratio), A Mega drive frequently produces weird glitching at the left and right edges as well. (SNES interestingly generally does not.) Then again, PAL consoles on a 16:9 television typically result in double whammy of black bars on all sides. On the upside, if a game doesn't put anything important outside this area, 192-200 lines of the image genuinely creates an undistorted 16:9 image from most PAL consoles. (the pixel aspect ratio on a PAL SNES for instance is 25:18 - if you take into account that the visible area, including the black bars equates to 256x267 (More like 266.666 buh... Eh. )pixels, an work out the conversion, then you find that 256/267 ~0.9588 and if you then multiply this by 25:18 you get ~1.33 eg. 4:3 no surprises just yet. But if you work out 256x200 with this same pixel aspect, you find it's 1.28, then multiply by 25:18 and you get 1.77, which if you know your aspect ratios is 16:9 -this is of little real interest for old games, since most use the lines outside this area for important stuff, but it's quite interesting for homebrew development. It works similarly for other PAL systems too - you can get 16:9 out of them without losing too many lines - it can even benefit you in terms of special effects and the like if you build a game with this in mind, since you gain extra blank lines and thus probably extra v-blank time. However, it does create a problem for NTSC machines, and thus releasing versions of these games for use outside of Europe. To be fair, you CAN still do it, but the resolution losses are much harsher - where the PAL machines drop to about 200 lines, to get 16:9 on NTSC requires dropping to 168 lines. PAL loses about 40 lines, NTSC loses more like 56 - granted PAL already had black bars, so that makes sense, but still...)

The bottom of the screen issue with Sonic 2 can happen on real hardware (it happens on my Mega Drive) and happens in most emulators, so it’s not that unusual. *EDIT:* I just verified it, it happens sometimes on all Mega Drives since it’s a rasterisation error within the game’s code.

Many years ago I worked for a famous UK based videogame retailer and during the ps2 era We'd sell those controllers with the store logo stuck in that spot. It usually was the first thing to break on them, just before the d-pad.

In defense of the SNES emulator, Yoshi's Island is actually one of, if not the hardest SNES games to emulate properly due to the chips used on the cartridge.
Sure back then but game paks like the SD2SNES not only do flawless Super FX support but even Super GameBoy now & these Paks are more affordable now than they were when 1st released.
Overall saying, with a little effort these days, it can be properly emulated.

So actually for Sonic 2, that bottom of the screen glitch also happens on the actual console and only in Emerald Hill. It's a simple raster glitch making the 2 bottom rows of pixel scroll differently than the rest of the screen

Metal Slug can get slow, but it's worse on this system. The emulators are unoptimized and some of the ROM files have been modified. This creates strange delays in controller inputs and slowdown during sequences of playing games.
actually, metal slug slows down because it was supposed to slow down, it's a pretty weird design decision, i played various ports of the game, and if you look closely and carefully at the game when it slows down, you will realize that this is not frame drop, it's slow motion.

If I recall correctly it was an issue with the mvs version(arcade) updating the logic twice per frame, bug or bad code on snk's part. I own a mvs arcade system with metal slug and it slows down the same way every time. I think only ms1 and ms2 have that problem. MsX fixed the issues. Most the releases are being emulated, so they show the same issue.
Well, I give this to the Fuze: the idea of the console itself wirelessly charging the controller is a pretty cool idea.

They were porting games to the NES as gaming was illegal in China. However bootleg NES consoles were so incredibly common that porting to the NES was a good choice as most people would have a NES.

I recall seeing NES's in china since the 90s (why do you think there are so many chinese NES homebrews) They have a very strong gaming scene in internet Cafes. Although Consoles where banned for a long while (2000 to 2015) but it was banned in the same sense bootleg CDs and software piracy is banned in china. Nobody listened to it.

Funny thing about graphical glitches on Sonic 2 - I have a PAL model 2 mega Drive, and because of the way PAL systems frequently work you get black bars at the top and bottom.
But one thing you might find interesting is that Sonic 2 in this case has graphical corruption along the bottom of the screen on real hardware.
The reason you're probably not used to seeing this is because on an NTSC version of the game you have at most 224 visible lines, and chances are even then some of those are in the overscan area of most televisions,
On PAL though... Well, you might have 240 lines, but... The TV display is intended for 288 lines, and at a bare minimum will display 267 lines on most televisions, so you can see the bottom edge of the screen where it transitions from graphics to black...
And... Yeah. Corruption is common.
Incidentally if you have a modern TV with unusually small overscan on the sides (most 16:9 televisions are in this category by default when they show 4:3 material at correct aspect ratio), A Mega drive frequently produces weird glitching at the left and right edges as well.
(SNES interestingly generally does not.)
Then again, PAL consoles on a 16:9 television typically result in double whammy of black bars on all sides.
On the upside, if a game doesn't put anything important outside this area, 192-200 lines of the image genuinely creates an undistorted 16:9 image from most PAL consoles.
(the pixel aspect ratio on a PAL SNES for instance is 25:18 - if you take into account that the visible area, including the black bars equates to 256x267 (More like 266.666 buh... Eh. )pixels, an work out the conversion, then you find that 256/267 ~0.9588 and if you then multiply this by 25:18 you get ~1.33 eg. 4:3 no surprises just yet. But if you work out 256x200 with this same pixel aspect, you find it's 1.28, then multiply by 25:18 and you get 1.77, which if you know your aspect ratios is 16:9 -this is of little real interest for old games, since most use the lines outside this area for important stuff, but it's quite interesting for homebrew development. It works similarly for other PAL systems too - you can get 16:9 out of them without losing too many lines - it can even benefit you in terms of special effects and the like if you build a game with this in mind, since you gain extra blank lines and thus probably extra v-blank time. However, it does create a problem for NTSC machines, and thus releasing versions of these games for use outside of Europe. To be fair, you CAN still do it, but the resolution losses are much harsher - where the PAL machines drop to about 200 lines, to get 16:9 on NTSC requires dropping to 168 lines. PAL loses about 40 lines, NTSC loses more like 56 - granted PAL already had black bars, so that makes sense, but still...)
