The saddest thing is that somewhere there's a couple of programmers who thought they'd landed a gig in game development for a new console, who had this conversation shortly after getting hired:
"So, we need you to develop games for Sega Genesis hardware."
"You want us to make a Genesis game?"
"No, not *a* game, games, plural."
"How many are we talking? Two, three?"
"Forty."
"Forty??? How many years do we have to get them all out?"
"You have three weeks. Go."
Ohh so you are saying that they just did everything last minute
That'd a kind version of the truth. AtGames made these games years ago for their own cheap plug and play systems. These games were made as their own products. If they were last minute fill ins at least you could understand that. But nope.
@@medes5597 Yeah. Every one of those games plays exactly like the kind of "games" they had us make in programming class to learn basic elements like controller input or info arrays. I mean this not to brag, but to show just how little effort they actually put in, but my version of Whack A Mole which I made in a week in high school was better than theirs: mine was a "shooter" game where you were a sniper, and bad guys popped up in the windows of a building and you had to "shoot" them by clicking on them, and innocent people would pop up that you'd lose points for shooting. It had animations, it had different levels (different buildings, each with more windows and different window layouts), it had variations in how the baddies or the innocents could pop up or run by, and there were random events where lights in rooms would go out (giving you less time to spot the baddie or innocent) or curtains would be drawn (making you have to recognize the baddies or innocents by shape), it had music and sound (stock music and sound, but still), and it had a health and reload system, and I made it in 5 consecutive hour-and-fifteen-minute periods using Microsoft Visual Basic as a teenager, and I'm far from being a talented programmer by any sense of the term.
Sounds a little like the development time given for ET on the Atari!
Sega totally redeemed themselves when they decided to contract M2 to develop the Genesis Mini. The difference is night and day

As someone who grew up with genesis, and STILL to this day prefer SEGA over Nintendo (aside from Pokemon Gen 1+2, and Smash Bros) it pains me to say that SEGA is the KING of taking L's in the major game market.
I only specify MAJOR because if we were factoring in the minor game market, then that honor would go to Tiger Electronics.

I had or rather have an At games console one of those little portable ones and it is not too bad especially for the money. The controls on that are fine but besides that it shares a lot of the same issues. But lessened due to the nature of a portable vs a device on a large display. One of the more glaring issues was the fact that the screen was not equally bright on both sides. The left was brighter than the right. Noticeably so. I got my money out of it but now a days I think most people would just emulate off their phones. I didn't do that because the phones at the time were not quite capable of that at least not well.
Edit: actually it would appear the portable console didn't actually have many of the issues this thing did. Besides the sound it didn't really have any of these other problems.

I actually bought one yesterday for £20 (~25 USD) ... but the poor controller makes playing anything really hard and I have the wired version.

It’s sad to think that this console was my first ever exposure to Sega Genesis games. As a young kid I thought this was what these games really played like, and the awful sound emulation actually scared me because it was so loud and uncanny. So thanks for giving me nightmares, AtGames!

I got an Atari Retro Flashback from AtGames, and even though the company has had some bad ones (like this one), the Atari Retro Flashback is actually _really_ good! Games run smoothly, has HDMI support, and the wireless controllers that come with the console *_ACTUALLY WORK!_*
I think that AtGames should stick with the retro consoles pre-NES, because they _clearly_ don't know how to handle more than 8-bit games.

Hell, Jakks Pacific’s Atari and Activision tv game consoles worked better. The sound was way off and it had no noise filter for some reason, but everything was in tune at least and the gameplay was really nice.

I was tempted to pick this up at the Family Dollar for $40. Thank goodness I passed on it. Eventually picked up a Sega Genesis Mini and had zero regrets.
I bought this as a young child and it's wires shredded my dogs insides and killed it after he ate it.

When a TV Remote and a Sega Genesis Controller Love Each other very much they create an ATgames Sega Genesis Firecore Wireless Controller.
I got one of these for Christmas quite awhile back. I was very disappointed but marveled at how horrible it was, and, the next week, when I brought my friend over to see it, it stopped working completely.

Mine stopped working completely (and it was under the mega drive name and we used a 50hz tv, meaning I probably played the games slower) and we tried getting it fixed. The fella doing it never managed to get to doing it. A few years later, I got a computer made by the same person that we asked to fix the atgames sega genesis. The thing was SO SLOW. I stopped using it and told a fella in my class that has experience with computers and said it was a total fire hazard.

I fell victim to this console for Christmas that one year. I wanted an actual Sega Genesis, but I got this instead. It was unfortunate, because I never got an actual Genesis experience. You're better off buying the real thing. Even if you tried to put the Genesis cartridges in there, you would've had the risk of damaging them. I wouldn't take any chances.
I had a version of the dumpster fire with corded controllers. It was just as bad as the wireless version. Thankfully, I got a real Sega genesis (US model 1) for Christmas last month. Currently waiting for my HDMI genesis cable and flashcart to come in.

I actually got this for Christmas one year, and I was really excited. After putting in 2 or 3 carts to the cartridge slot, I left it alone for a night. The next morning, gone. Dead. Wouldn't turn on. Was one of my worst experiences with a product I can recall.

I got this for Christmas back in 2016. The only use it for was me and my sister attempting to play Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. That attempt didn't last long before we just tossed the thing in the dumpster where it belongs.

We already have the Analogue Mega SG, and it performs well. Not to mention you have a unreleased game with it.
As for the multiple games issue, just use a flashcart. Two things, and done.

The ONLY reason I could see for the lack of stereo audio output is that the original Genesis came with a cable with only yellow and white and ATGames was like "Why should we do better?" (I used the headphone jack for sound instead as a kid since that WAS stereo). But in this day and age, it's inexcusable. I didn't know anything about this system until Sega announced their mini, so thanks for covering it!
I got this as a kid with 2 cheap wired controllers. I had a sleep over with my friends and we played golden axe all night. So yes it is bad, but I have good memories of it lol.

I remember buying this 5 years ago. Even though the controller was awful and the emulation was terrible, I still have fond memories of playing it. It is what made me an active Sonic fan.

To this day I’m still haunted by the off key sound emulation that my friend inadvertently subjected me to, I pleaded with him to get rid of it and thankfully he eventually buckled and listened
I had this system. Biggest complaint was the controllers. There was lag that made fast-paced games unplayable. And that's on top of the infrared line-of-sight problem. My original Genesis controllers solved that problem. And not to defend this system, but it would eventually read all my cartridges unlike other Genesis revamp systems that I've tried. And yeah, the bonus games were trash but that was to be expected. Honestly, I didn't even notice how bad the audio was because I hadn't heard the original game audio in 20 years. Thanks for the side-by-side comparison. Good video, fair critiques.

there's actually a musical term for what's happening with the music on this system -- polytonality: playing one or more parts of a song in different keys.
here's the thing, though. composers who use this technique are usually trying to create a certain effect by doing it intentionally. AtGames created the effect through sheer incompetence
So while some composers might use polytonality to create a sense of pure, indescribable dread and horror… AtGames used it to give our wallets a sense of pure, indescribable dread and horror

Is that because of lag? Or because of too much sound info being shoved through a small "output channel" if you will? (I don't know sound terminology, sorry.) I have always been confused by audio lag, like in NES games how the whole game slows down when the screen flickers because of too many sprites, because it doesn't just sound latent, it sounds like there's too much information at once, even though it isn't the case when running normally.

I got two of these, i got the wired ones i throw away those wireless ones, they suck. I still enjoy playing it, some music sound good but mostly it sounds awful.
I bought into the dumpster fire years before this video for 2 reasons. One, My Sega Nomad stopped working, and by topped working, I mean the dial to control the back-lit screen broke off and became unfixable. I had a few good cartirudges, couldn't find a used game shop so this was my next best step and GOOD LORD, I have more to add. I did some experiments with the pile of trash using physical cartridges I own, I took games that had some form of 3D Rendering or Pseudo 3D, Games like Toy Story or Doom. Toy Story has a Doom-like-level where you need to move the Little Green Men out of the maze, With the game hard to beat with the lousy controls given, I punched in the level skip cheat and wanted to play that level again. The level did not load; from what I could rule out, the console doesn't have the ability to perform the math instructions for the Pseudo or Fake 3D effect. So Games I had on hand such as Toy Story and Virtual Racer would be unplayable, one keeping the game from being finished and the other not booting period.
Lets KEEP going; I decided to try a different game, an Action RPG called Wonder Boy in Monster World; no 3D graphics, a hard as nails Metroidvainia with sword and magic. Clean the contacts, plugged her in and turned her on. Did, not, boot. No Screen, no noise, just death and silence and soooooooooo much darkness.... So I decided, for kicks, to get my only solid copy of a 3 in one Cartridge with 3 Sonic games, one of the being Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine... AND... Like the one before, it won't boot up.
I ripped apart the console and set fir to it the next morning. I tore apart the controllers and used them for spare parts, the buttons are now on a frankensteined PS1 controller I cobbled together and the circuit board, I repurposed into a TV remote for my old CRT Tv's after figuring out how to set them. I scrapped the shells.
... BUT THAT'S NOT THE WORST PART YET!!! There's an At Games Sega Portable, slimmer, slicker and neater but, if not worse, MORE broken than the AtGamesConsole for Genesis.

The Bottle Cap racing game, is closer to curling than is the curling game.
Its actually based on an IRL board game called Pitchcar which is basically what you see there. Very fun game, this doesn't do it justice (As you could probably guess...)

Actually I have a Sega Genesis Classic and it works fairly well, I even bought cartridges for it too, it's okay for what it is so I think this video is a little harsh, btw I have the non fire core version, meaning I have the wired controller version of the console. What sucks is that u need a specific type of AC Adapter for the console. Other than that I like it. The AV Out is very useful because we're still releasing TVs with AV Out and if u have a TV from the early 2000s chances are that they only support AV Out, so yes very good and cheap design for the console.

you know something sad? my first exposure to a majority of genesis titles (Comix Zone, Decap Attack, Streets of Rage) was through this console. not the exact model since it didn’t have mortal kombat but it was from AtGames. so as a little kid i assumed these were how the games sounded until i finally figured out how emulators worked.
Same here, I would play all the sonic, mortal Kombat, and Vectorman games as well as ristar, comix zone, bonanza bros, Alex kidd, and bottle taps race, I thought those were the actual audio pitches

I thought TecToy's Mega Drive from Brazial was bad for not supporting SegaCD and Sega32x and having a bad sound quality, but this Sega Genesis from ATGames is just TERRIBLE,
it's makes TecToy's Mega Drive look like a wonder from another world.
But I was thinking, TecToy's Mega Drive has received updates that have improved game compatibility and corrected sound problems, maybe it's possible to do the same with this Sega Genesis model, right?
@@MoonSarito I don't think so, all of these clone systems are just Genesis on a chip's, so in order to get any upgrade to any of these systems you need to replace the main chip completely
My brother bought one of these a few years ago. Didn't see him play it, but it didn't look that bad. He later bought a real Mega Drive and hasn't touched this since. After watching this video, I can see why.

Its amazing how an actual company working with Sega could make something vastly inferior to Kega Fusion.
Best Sega emulator. Wish the developer had kept updating it. Master System, Genesis, CD and 32X emulation all in a single emulator (only downside is the window size was set along with the 2x window size which eventually became quite small as screen resolution and sizes increased over the years).
@Rokabur thankfully there stuff like picodrive and genesis plus gx that pretty great, I don't know better then kaga fusion but on my wii they run all the genesis games I threw at them perfectly. Plus virtual console not half bad.

Oh yeah I remember my dad bought this system from dollar general for me and my brothers but when i played it for the first time it really wasn't a bad thing for me when I was younger but now that I'm looking at this system again, I wish my dad never bought this and should've gotten a regular sega genesis with all the classic sonic games instead

Something I should mention:
Some versions of this system before the HD one in 2017 had all three Genesis Phantasy Star games. However, the system had neither internal batteries nor save states. In other words, THERE WAS NO WAY TO SAVE YOUR PROGRESS. This meant either permanently leaving the system on or having to start from the beginning every single time.

I bought mine in 2015, and I don’t remember ever having the problems he said. But yeah I remember not being able to have save states. Also the old one didn’t have sonic 3, it had Sonic & Knuckles. And my box was different.
I own the one with all 3 Phantasy Star Games, but there isnt Ecco, Ecco Jr, or Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine

doing that would be a waste considering the games still wouldn't run correctly. also, that might not even be the issue, the genesis sound chip was notoriously hard to emulate especially in a cheap clone like this.
These are the same consoles that John Hancock gave a pass to for years and hid referral links (that he made money off of if clicked and purchased) in his descriptions without labeling them as such (still to this day) and didn’t have an issue with them until he literally had no choice but to change his opinion about the company itself. But he was still confident they would address it and make a mends.
He would constantly argue with people, calling them bandwagon for wanting to hate on them.
When Sega announced the Mini and it was to be made by AtGames, he was on Twitter arguing and made a video about it saying it was a good thing.
When I questioned him and made a video (also did so very politely so he wouldn’t feel sabotaged or trolled) about his referral links, because many people were constantly asking him if he made money off of these consoles and he’d say no repeatedly, he watched my video for less than 3 mins after I sent him the link, and came back, said he hated my video, and blocked me.

Yep, during their Wal-Mart console scandal, I even had reports (from a pretty damn big source) that AtGames was doing Skype calls with all the UA-camrs they normally send their crap to so they could do damage control.
With that and how he blocked me, it was very eye opening. The dude even tried to tell me “it’s normal to use affiliate links, Metal Jesus does it all the time.” And before I could send him a screenshot of Metal Jesus’ description where he correctly labels the affiliate links as “*affiliate link” he blocked me. He still hasn’t reached out to me. I was right about that. When people are left, right, and center, asking you if you are somehow making money off these consoles, and you say no every time, and come to find out you are, you are just using affiliate links in those reviews, that is pretty shameful and I would say it turns those “reviews” into ads at that point. This is why full disclosure is a thing in the first place.
Sure some people will say, you don’t have to label every affiliate link as such, and that may be fair, but when the video in question is of the very product that is the affiliate link, you do, and should. And to top it all the fuck off, if someone asked me if I was making money off the consoles, I would simply say, “yes, I do make a small portion if someone watches my video, sees the link, clicks on it, and buys it, I do.” Then no one could tell him shit because at least he was honest about it.
But no, I try to point this all out, because so many people have asked, his comment sections are riddled with it on nearly every atgames video he has, I’m somehow the asshole. Fuck that.

I contacted John Riggs and did just that. He didn’t see an issue with it. But again, my issue is
A. People have constantly asked him if he made money off these consoles or was paid to review it. And he always said no
B. The affiliate link itself is fine. Making money on youtube is fine. But the affiliate link is the same product that is being reviewed in the video. That should have been disclosed in the video that it is a affiliate link.
To be clear, if he had affiliate links for his camera equipment in his descriptions in a atgames review video, hey! No problem. The problem is when the affiliate link product is the same product being reviewed. That is as simple I can make it.
I also proved in my video that it was in fact a affiliate link for John Hancock, plus, he admitted it in my dm’s to him. So I don’t see why he doesnt just label it as an affiliate link. Well I know why, because he wants to avoid people saying he has an incentive to review these consoles positively. But, I’m sorry, John does have an incentive, whether he admits it or not.

autocorrect man nah, there’s no direct tie to sega or its affiliates, it’s just a collection of old arcade games and a small selection of NES titles, they have the same controllers a genesis does but there’s nothing on the console itself that implies association with Sega, plus the sound on it is actually decent and doesn’t sound like it’s been shitted out of a synthesizer
