I was largely out of gaming from ~2009-2015. But in 2017, after the Switch was released, I looked for a used WiiU and bought the system and a good number of games from a guy for a good deal. I cannot tell you how much fun I had for like a year. I knew the system was technically a "bust", and I can't comment on what it was like in the years that the WiiU was "the" Nintendo, but after the fact, I can tell you that it's great. Donkey Kong, New Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Mario Maker, Pikmin, Mario Kart, Mario 3D World, and some others I'm forgetting. Anyway, yeah, I know it's a long-gone console and a dark stain in Nintendo history, but...I partially credit it with getting me back into gaming.
If you get one for a good deal, there's plenty of good to be had with a concentrated burst of the best of Wii U. The pain came when you had to wait 18 months between good releases while you watched your friends with Playstation 4s get solid gold every other week.

Yeah I ended up selling the game pad and haven’t played the Wii u since as it was easily one of the noisiest consoles I have owned and I’m just not a fan of motion controls and having to keep an eye on the battery levels - much prefer a wired controller
My family was going through financial problems at the time, so I only received a 3ds during that time as opposed to the 'big' console that was currently out. I think I ended up getting the better deal overall.

Story time! I went to Target right around launch to pickup a WiiU and Mario. Upon checkout the young girl says “A Wii U?”. “Yeah!” I return excitedly. “It doesn’t look very good.” She says. “Yeah…” This starts the life of the next Nintendo console.
My favorite stories are those were someone mentions the Wii U at school and a girl asks “is that a Wii game?” and then there’s an internal Nintendork crisis of whether to explain the truth nobody cares about or just pretend the Wii U isn’t it’s own thing.
I am continually amazed at now just how long Scott can talk about a subject, but at the fact that he can make it entertaining and interesting the entire time, too. I can't wait for part 2!
1:12:00 I'm honestly so happy that, starting with 3D World, they switched to every OTHER year, and diversified the types of games so it wasn't just constant "same-y" mainline Mario. From 2013 to 2023 we got a 2D-ish 3D Mario, a 3D-ish 3D Mario, a very short 3D Mario inside of a re-release, two Mario Makers, and a completely new 2D Mario with a brand-new style. That's SO much better than TWO Galaxies, FOUR New Soups, and a "3D" game that felt like New Soup and Galaxy got married in the most mediocre way possible.
Main reason I don’t play mine anymore is I’m not a fan of motion controls and would just rather use a wired controller instead of being forced in a lot of the games to waggle the controllers around and of course have to constantly watch the battery level - must admit though the game pad was pretty comfortable to hold

I am a solid believer that the Wii U Gamepad was a trial run for the Switch, and that Nintendo really wanted to make the switch around the time the Wii U came out but the technology wasn't fast or cheap enough at that point
1:05:46 Wow! I genuinely believed I was the only one who thought that! It's such an oddly specific thing to notice, but this was for some reason one of the things I remember most about my WiiU. I totally understand all the criticism for the WiiU, I just cant deny the fact that one of my favorite memories ever as a kid that I still think back to was Christmas of 2012. My family never had much money so I honestly didnt expect to have my hands on this console for a year or so until the price dropped a bit. My parents brought out one last gift they hid so I couldnt even guess what it was. And to my surprise it was a wii U, I screamed so loud with joy i hurt my own ears and immediately got to setting it up. My friends, the Wii U holds a very special place in my heart. Late one night while driving my family home I told my wife how much I LOVED the NES and Super Nintendo when I was a kid. I went on and on about the great memories I shared with my dad and cousin playing Mario Bros 3, Mario Kart and Mario World. Well, a week later my wife got me a Wii U and several games. Now, I'm 42 years old and didn't play video games after the SNES. So, when we came back from GameStop with Yoshi's Woolly World, MK8, Nintendo Land, Wii U Party, PLUS Mario Galaxy I and II, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Return to Dream Land, Mario Party 8, 9 and 10, Mario Kart Wii and the New Mario Bros games in early 2017, it just blew my mind!!! I realized I missed out!!! I NEVER realized people disliked the Wii U. To me, this was so special and I still play these great games with my kids and wife. I love the Switch, but whatever the GCN or N64 was for millions of fans the Wii U was for me...I adore Mario Party 10, Mario 3d World and Kirby's Rainbow Curse!! I understand that some were disappointed by the Wii U, but I'm a huge fan boy and you couldn't get me to say a single critical thing about that generation!!! I have a Wii U in my bedroom, living room, and the other three rooms in my house! The Wii U is magical, and allows you to play some of the greatest games of all time! I can play DS, N64, NES, SNES and my entire Wii and Wii U library of games on this one console! Switch owes a lot of it's success to the Wii U ports because they are great games! Now, I have a Switch in each room, a PS5 n PSVR, and a couple of Xbox consoles all thanks to my wife loving me enough to get me a Wii U I didn't even think to ask for...
Nintendo Land is definitely up there of some of the most underrated games of all time! The multiplayer experiences in Nintendoland are so replayable that it could be considered one of if not the best local multiplayer experience of all time.

Yoshis woolly world?
Oh yeah it's a stain alright... 😂
