My Amazonica has twelve leaves and hasn't dropped a single one since bringing it home. I was so scared because it was my first alocasia. I really, really want a Jacklyn, so it's encouraging to hear that they are of the hardier kind!
My Bambino has 22 leaves. She is a beast and love her so much. I got her 1.5 years ago and it just recently lost two of hr oldest leaves because eventually it gets so big that those outside older leaves get push out and fall off. She gave me lots of babies too.
Oh my goodness I am so happy to hear you grow just in perlite! My frydek will root and do well in perlite but as soon as I move it to soil or pon it dies back to a stump. This video was just what I needed to see to decide to just leave it in perlite this time! Thank you
Hi Jeff, It is no Alocasia, but I found out my Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma cutting were doing so well in perlite, that I left them growing in there. Your Jacklyn is so beautiful 🤩
Thanks so much! It works very well when you have plants in larger pots and the moisture meter doesn't reach the bottom.... Kind of defeats the purpose if you can't test all the soil. That's why I like using the wood skewer method and if I'm being honest I don't really try trust moisture meters as well lol
@EverythingPlants oh same I've not had any luck with moisture metres and have been just sticking my finger in but you can't reach to the bottom of the pot that way so your method is definitely going to be getting used ty 👍
Yay! I found a fellow Canadian Prarie plant person.🎉 I just bought an Alocasia Jacklyn to add to my collection. I have never propagated anything without a leaf.
My son gave me a poly and it has been a very easy care plant. Sounds like the Jacklyn is too. Will the corms sprout if you just leave them in the pot w the mother? Tfs
Thank for information and all the things you use to take care of your plants. So very helpful. I want one of those Jacklyn . I just seen it on a live sale
Having a hard time with my Jacklyn. Started losing a few leaves when I brought it home and then it seemed okay, now dropping 3 more! Only one good one left. 😢Really hope I can save it.
Mine lost all of its leaves straightaway. It was a small 3 leaf plant. I thought it was dead, but it’s putting out new growth. Just a change in conditions I suspect. Hang in there.
Definitely need to try perlite for my alocasias, I have a few in leca, some are doing great others not so much lol Where do you get your clear nursery pots from
I recently purchased a Jacklyn & one by one the leaves turned & had to be removed. I was so sad because I thought it had died, but a new shoot is sprouting now & I’m happy again 😊
Yes you do. I no longer have any in perlite. I use a nice chunky aroid mix. I fertilize pretty much ever watering with most of my plants. I fill up a large garden sprayer with water/fertilizer and then go around and water my plants
@EverythingPlants thank you! So it's just me that needs a bit more courage with dealing with her 🙂 I thought spraying/wetting it will affect the leaves
Hello, I work in a plant shop and we get our alocasias in mostly peat moss 😢 do you recommend repotting them in a more airy mix?? Thank you. I'm having problems with the Jacklyn 😢 and I don't want them to go to the trash 😢
Definitely don't throw them out because it's very common for them to go dormant.....they will regrow again. I can't really give advice because people have different success with different mediums and it also depends on the conditions in your environment as well
Hi Jeff, and thanks for this. My Jacklyn started rotting and had whitefly really bad, so I’m down to a stump with a little bit of rotting stem attached. Thanks to your video I’ve put it in perlite and I’m hopeful it will come back. There were no roots on the corm, but it does seem firm. Is there hope?
Sorry about losing that one corm 😢! I love how genuine you are. And … listen to your gut next time. That kind of thing happens to me, too. Do I listen? No! Not always 😂. Your alocasias are beautiful! The only kind I’m able to keep alive is the Polly but they are a spider mite magnet! It’s so frustrating. But I still have them. I’d love to see what plants you keep in your home other than the basement. Have you done such a clip yet? Thanks for this one!
Is it healthy to keep them on 14 hr light all yr round? My thought was to mimick outdoor conditions and let them naturally go through their dormant period. Which method is best long term?
Alocasia don't go dormant in their natural habitat. I give my tropical plants 16h of light because the light intensity they receive is nowhere close to a bright lit window.
I think watering perlite is too much unnecessary work. Of course you do you, but I always keep my perlite plants sitting in water at all times. Usually with no drainage, and fill it with water about halfway or less. I very rarely have to water, and there are no issues with this because nothing ever rots in perlite.
Was anti Alocasia for a long time but saw Alocasia Jacklyn at the local plant shop didn’t buy it right off and thought nothing but it for a week and the next time I went their I bought it and had already picked a name out for it . Their name is Allister after the character in Hazbin Hotel😂😂
This is my second time watching this video because my Jacklyn came in the mail with other plants. So I’m wondering how did those little corms you popped off do? Along with your little secret experiment? I’m nosy plus I know it’s something that will probably help me with my collection. Thanks for video. By the chopped and propped my warocquenaum as soon as it arrived. It was a little tall and leaning over so I thought it was the perfect opportunity.
I haven't actually checked the corms in a bit but last week there weren't any roots yet. Some develop very fast and others not so much lol My secret experiment is still on going....but I can tell you haha I have a reverted burle Marx philo that I'm cutting back to see if I can get variegation back....so from the mother stem, stem cuttings and the top cut.
Question from a newbie with Alocasia's. Do you have to pick those corms offs? Or can they stay as is? Do they drop themselves off the mother pant? Appreciate the help with my questions
Thanks for sharing the lighting with foot candles!! That's the best way to teach/share lighting other than constantly saying "bright indirect light."
Exactly....I had that bright indirect light because what does that even mean haha
I can't wait for my Alocasia Jacklyn to grow this big!! Such lovely plant 💚💚💚
Thanks......but mine is down to one leaf 😪
@@EverythingPlants oh nooooo!! 😧😩 hopefully Spring is coming and along will be more leaves!
@@EverythingPlantswhy is it down to one leaf?
@@aqua.scape69 I probably let it gets too dry and it went dormant
I sometimes struggle with alocasias but I still love them. I am going to have to give growing them in straight perlite a try now.
It was a game changer for me

Yes! The roots love perlite!
Thank you for the education 🤩😍🤩, Jacklynn is STUNNING 🤩😍💓
Thanks Kim!

So many plants do well in just perlite. Thanks for this message!
I like your bamboo skewer soil moisture test method ty I'll give it a try

Hey! Where in Canada are you???
Winnipeg Manitoba!❤
Jeff, I appreciate your plant information! Your collection is amazing!😊
Thanks so much Cynthia!
This was great. I’m in Canada too so love the locally relevant info for dry winters
Oh sweet! Which province are you in?
Thank you for the video! Much needed information obtained!
Glad it was helpful!

I've seen them around my area in Saskatchewan for like 15 bucks now
Thank you for all the helpful information ! 🪴
You are welcome!!!
Hi Jeff! I'm bolder with my alocasias now and may finally get myself a Jacklyn. Great video. Thanks.
You won't be disappointed with it
@EverythingPlants I know, it's such a beauty. They have them at that local nursery, 40 for a 4 inch pot. I am waiting for a lower price.
Love your videos!!!
Thank you!!
Great Video, thank you Question can you just leave the corms in with the main plant? Just for a fuller plant? Curious

Where do you get your clear nursery pots from
I've got the majority of them from a local plant shop (The Little Big Plant Company) and from plants that I get from North Shore Tropicals online
I recently purchased a Jacklyn & one by one the leaves turned & had to be removed. I was so sad because I thought it had died, but a new shoot is sprouting now & I’m happy again 😊
Do you need to feed the plant if only grown in perlite? How often if so?
Yes you do. I no longer have any in perlite. I use a nice chunky aroid mix. I fertilize pretty much ever watering with most of my plants. I fill up a large garden sprayer with water/fertilizer and then go around and water my plants
I just got mine and it seems so delicate and dainty
Hi there! Please help! How do you clean the leaves on alocasia Jacklyn? They have such a different structure that I hove no idea how to approach that
I just use a water hose and spray them off
@EverythingPlants thank you! So it's just me that needs a bit more courage with dealing with her 🙂 I thought spraying/wetting it will affect the leaves
I grow my corms in a tiny cup of water and this works wonderful!!! Haven’t lost a corm yet
I've seen this as well
Many thanks

As long as the corm is still firm then it is absolutely fine!
Hi again, I was wondering if the corms grew? I tried some with my other type of Alocasia with no successs

How do you deal with bad odor from all the algae forming in perlite inside a prop box/ potted?
I honestly don't smell anything
@@EverythingPlants oh thanks, it might be a 'me' issue then!
@@SimAviator I have had some pretty smelly stagnant water in jars before.... That made me want to vomit LOL
@@EverythingPlants yeah I usually have really bad smell in Perlite once the green starts to set in, especially when it's covered.
Could you tell us when you got that Jacklyn alocasia? Was it a single or came with 3 plants in it? Thanks.
It got it maybe 6-7 months ago and it had the three stems in it
Semi hydro
I transferred mine to a semi hydro in leca, she’s not happy! Could be dormancy I suppose
Any big change usually shocks an alocasia.....have you tried straight perlite?

Could you not just use rain water to give them a drink?
Of course!!!
I only use rain water! I wonder should I lower the pH in that?
how many lux does it need for Alocasia ?
Is it healthy to keep them on 14 hr light all yr round? My thought was to mimick outdoor conditions and let them naturally go through their dormant period. Which method is best long term?
I don't live in a tropical region but I think that close to the equator in those regions they get 12 hrs of sunlight and 12 hrs of night.
Alocasia don't go dormant in their natural habitat. I give my tropical plants 16h of light because the light intensity they receive is nowhere close to a bright lit window.
Hello! I’m new to the channel. I just received my alocasia jacklyn from the seller and it is mushy and so limp. Do you have any tips to revive it?
Feel free to message on my IG as well. Is the stem still firm?
Oh and welcome to the channel!
The bottom part of the stem is firm, the rest is limp and isn’t standing at all.
This is great! I ordered one of these off Amazon and it's coming in Thursday! I'm really nervous cuz iv never ordered a plant off Amazon😅
