The Alocasia Scalprum was my first rare plant purchase - from Home Depot, no less, going on two years ago. LOVE it! It’s gone down to a corm a couple times but always comes back. Gotten so big, he’s out of my cabinet. Soft spot for my first love.
I really like watching your videos. You’re so great at explaining things! A natural teacher. I watch lots of content on plants and you are the most down to earth, non-intimidating and enthusiastic plant teachers around. Thank you so much for your work.
One of my favourites that you didn’t mention is the Brancifolia! They don’t look like much as babies but they get super tropical and beautiful quickly.
Zebrina, Ninja, Tiny dancer, Pink Dragon and Melo are the favorites that I already own. Frydek is a wishlist plant of mine. I recently was buying from a private seller. But when I wanted to pick it up (she lived 1,5 hours away), she wasn’t home. And afterwards she found out that it had spider mites. Pfeew, I dodged a bullet with that one.
Just got a Stingray plant on Palmstreet a few days ago. I have always wanted one after seeing it at my local plant store. Thanks for introducing everyone about that app.
My alocasia micholiztiana is about 3 feet tall and has leaves about 18inches long. It has 5 stems in the same pot and got very unwieldy. It was my highest maintenance plant I have but I loved it.
I love my alocasias too. They're so unusual. There's one thing that's gone astray with plant producer's naming though. The Micholitziana Green Velvet is the striking dark green variety with the whitish veination and the variegated form is the Frydek which to me is stunning. I bought a baby Green Velvet that threw out one gorgeous variegated "Frydek" leaf then reverted back. I can't wait to grow the corms on. I could get both. I love your channel. Thank you. 🙏
Right now (because it changes), my favorite alocasia is my scalprum. 🥰 I absolutely love its visual and physical texture. The emergent leaf is a beautiful dark green (emerald?) and when they harden, the leaves are almost black. Amazingly beautiful plants!
Alocasias and anthuriums are my all time favorites to take care of. Any of my other plants from another genus I usually just have 1 that I’ve kept and sold/gave away the rest.
Hello! New here. New to houseplants. New to Alocasias!! Before knowing anything i bought a Medallion, a 'Jaclyn', and Calatheas! And im not even at home but at a friend's house while my apt is renovated-- so they have to be moved again! Oh dear. I'll do my best. Im armed with all info ive learned from you. Im already obsessed with houseplants and your channel is so great!! Thanks--- subscribed. Am so excited about plants but hope i dont go crazy. ( small studio) i used to be orchid hobbyist--- all the leaves are the same, tired of them!! Now nuts about crazy beautiful foliage!!!
I am literally watching your video for one minute and I had to comment on your plant behind you on the bookcase. It’s beautiful, is that pearl and Jade?
I have an Alocasia Silver Dragon that has been surviving for almost a year now! My only previous experience has been with Alocasia Polly and it has been eternally on the struggle bus between spider mites and underwatering. I just moved it to a brighter spot since you said non-jewel ones like a lot of light. My success with the Silver Dragon is almost making me want to try other Alocasias. A local seller had a Black Velvet and Bambino for sale last week. I was tempted to buy them, but I wasn’t sure how far away she is and the semi-annual local plant sale is coming up in a little over a month, so I might be able to find some there. That’s where I got the juvenile Silver Dragon. She also had a small Tiny Dancer, but I didn’t want to gamble that I’d be able to keep them both alive and the Silver Dragon was cheaper and a little prettier, IMO!
I have a Variegated Odora (Okinawa Silver) and I’m not a huge fan. The white parts always are warped and smaller so the leaves are lopsided and look sick. I have it in Pon, use Foliage Pro, Calmag, and Silica. It’s under grow lights so the next step is trying it in actual sunlight. But I’ve seen similar pictures online so I’m not the only one struggling with it. The alternative I’d suggest is the Variegated Macrorrhizos. They are quite similar but it grows way better and always has perfectly shaped leaves.
Hi lovely video as always, am just getting into alocasia was scared of them, I have just brought a low rider and wentii at lidl supermarket for £5.99 ech. But my favourites are black velvet, frydek green & frydek variegated. So far I love the low rider all of mine are in semi - hydro.
My Alocasia Wentii I got from walmart ($30)... I didnt know how massive it gets... she needs a repot after 2 months. You could actually see her grow if you looked closely. Its amazing She's MASSIVE... lol repot tomorow :| Peace...
This video is absolutely delightful! Thank you for sharing your plants and your thoughts. I believe that every Alocasia has its own amazing beauty. Because of the space limitation I have only "sculptured leaf" varieties. My current favorites are A. melo and A. infernalis. But I still wonder - are infernalis and scalprum the same plants?
Stingray is one of my favorites, but I've had 3 or 4 and ALL of them have succumbed to spider mites. No matter how vigilant I've been and how diligently I've treated them, they have eventually died.
I really enjoy your videos!! I'm not knocking you growing plants indoors but I need to ask you where you live in Hawaii? I don't understand why you don't Grow your plants outdoors because it would solve a lot of your problems. I'm 69 years old have been growing plants for over 50 years!! I thought my variegated Alocasia lost variegation 4 leaves later it started getting variegation, then each one after has had a good amount of variegation. But it was a big scare. I love Alocasia!
My cuprea and black velvet were my favorites in my collection. Sadly, I didn’t know how to keep them alive. Will definitely be trying again soon! My silver dragon is quite happy tho. I’m going to move them all to LECA and smaller ones to pon. What substrate do you use?
Great video. I am new to Alocasia...can one wet the leaves of the Black Velvit? I don't want to make them rot like the begonia when wetting the leaves. 😊
I don’t have one for that specific plant, but I care for it the same way as all of my prayer plants and I do have a care guide for prayer plants in general
This frequently happens to me when I’m like “I don’t have that many of _insert plant name here_” and then I take a count and I’m like “Apparently I have a lot…….”🤣
No Drea, dont do this to me! It's the end of the growing season and I don't have enough grow lights at it is. I do not need more alocasias! Or do I...?
I have a variegated micholitziana (Frydek) since mid 2020 and it never reverted. 98% of the corms I harvested from it were variegated. I now have a dozen of the same plant at home and sold and given away over a hundred corms and plantlets that were all variegated. Now with my stingray…. It reverted. I’ve had for 3 years and the variegation never came back. There’s not single variegated corms and plantlets too. Ouch
I have a black velvet And it has grown out in a weird manner (I wish we could post picture replies) I posted it on Reddit and everyone told me it was "Leggy" And how did I even get it to do that? 🤦🏽♀️ The plant is alive and the leaves are big and nice but the vines have stretched out very long... I admit it does look weird😮 People said that it needed more light and I'm thinking; it sits in about 10 hours of California sunlight by the window how much more light does it need?? Believe it or not the black velvet is one of the least talked about.. so there isn't a lot of help that I've been able to get for it.

When I saw that this guy had digestive problems I got very excited that finally there was something that was perhaps going to address some of my issues. Unfortunately, my problems are very different, and I don’t think any of these are going to work for me. I am 62 and suffer from Chronic Post-Radiation Enteritis, resulting from radiation treatment I got as a child. I had to retire at age 52 because of these stomach problems and once I was away from the structure of work, my ADHD got much, much worse. My diet is very restricted - no fiber, very little fruit and only vegetables that have been cooked so much that they are little more than mush. I don’t support most supplements - they either pass right through or they get stuck and wreak total havoc, landing me in the E.R. So many doctors have made valiant attempts to treat all the things going on with my body, but so the only thing that has helped is cannabis, which also was prescribed by my doctor to get me off of pain meds. I remain ever-hopeful and certainly willing to try new things
Jewel alocasia isn't a scientific term. It's like trying to fit all humans into "tall human" and "short human". What if someone is exactly average, lmao? It doesn't work that way, it's a complete BS term 😂
I kind of wonder if it separates the larger “elephant ear” types that have leaves that point up, compared to a “jewel type” that has leaves that point down. That seems like a good indicator of future size.
@@tinapomfrey5412 Obviously it's a fun term that is fun to use, but it's a little pointless to try to divide everything into these two categories. Several times during this video she wasn't sure which category to use, when the simple reality is that these categories aren't dead-set and you don't need to put everything into a box. Micholitziana and Cuprea are obviously medium-sized alocasias.
