The brilliance of his teacher's training is that, rather than simply teaching Goblin Slayer to be stronger, faster, or tougher, he trained GS to think better, faster, and harder. Goblins aren't super geniuses, but they are deceptively clever. They have to be, in order to defeat opponents many times their size, strength, and intelligence. GS's training was meant to teach him how to beat goblins at their own game.
In order to defeat your enemy, you must know your enemy, even practice their beliefs and methods.
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

I've seen alot of people wonder what he means by "What's in my pocket?" Other than being a refrence to the Hobbit, I think he's trying to teach GS that no matter how much he plans, the unexpected will still happen.

Clever training method. He told him to answer riddles, then threw him a curve ball when he got complacent and fell into a rhythm. He showed him that he can freeze up, even if he thinks he’s thinking freely. Expect the unexpected, improvise, adapt. He didn’t just condition his body, he changed GS outlook on the world

Crazy thing is his master actually didn't train him to hunt goblins, just to be smart, tough, fit, and all that. Everything Goblin Slayer learned about hunting Goblins he learned on his own when he started actually hunting them. Even the bit about a sword too long in a cave is a bad thing
They even go over this in the year one side story, the sword being too long, ambushes, the toughness of hobgoblins and how to exploit they're weaknesses. Swapping weapons, everything

Funny thing is, a polearm such as a spear would do pretty well in a cave. Gives you reach, thrusting ability, or just a deterrent for an enemy to approach from the front. Short sword of course is a great sidearm, that’s why the Romans and Spartans had them. Spear and shield, plus a short sword
@@johnhagala3622 You are right, There's probably a reason he doesn't use it as a primary. Maybe the chance of being attacked by both sides in a cave and not being able to easily swing/rotate it around. Most times I see him picking up a spear he already knows where the goblins are

For those who don't know, in Vietnam "The Ace of Spades" was placed on dead bodies killed by American Military as a psychological warfare tactic.
Besides this being an obvious LotR reference, the point of this training, the pocket question specificaly, was for GS to never stop thinking, as long as he keeps thinking he wont fall unconscious, start panicking or something like that. Also I heard that the actuall answer to the question was "your hand/yourself" something like that, the point being that no matter what he always has himself/his own body. Overall the author made this reference a great scene on its own

This is from light novel.
Its kinda funny... Goblin slayer has this high level, medieval basic training for FIVE YEARS from a legendary Rhea. In this training he is threatend with death for not answering riddles, must find ways to survive in blistering cold, all the while both respecting and fearing a master who is neither kind nor angry. If he has one slip up the master would punish him. Its kinda funny, because other adventurers go into adventuring with such little training and narrow mindsets. Before he even allows himself to become filled with ideas of grandeur or revenge the Rhea spits a comment like, "The fuck are you gonna do you useless brat?! You didnt do shit when your sister was getting raped!" Although this just seems like the master is being really insensitive, it is a sort of meta training. 'Dont get a big head, shit will happen that you are not strong enough to deal with.'
It makes me look at the other adventurers that mock him and I think, "You guys dont even really get what a person has to go through to be both that socially detatched and that strong. Y'all would get so fucked over if you had to fight goblins alone."
If he had the enchanted gear of other Silver level adventurers, he'd be nearly unstoppable.

@@StormRaven18 I mean, like, if he weren't fighting goblins. He's already proven to be an incredible fighter through skill alone -- so imagine what he could accomplish if he had the magic and gear of other heroes
DrenchedInSyrupp yeah, he could easily be on Spear Warriors level, even though Spear Warrior still takes him in a 1v1. But he’d never use that kind of equipment since it’s overkill, he doesn’t want to get complacent, and he doesn’t want to give the goblins any advantages in the case he does die.

Since Rhea are treasure seeking dungeon divers by nature it only fits they would often encounter goblins.
Moreover, it makes perfect sense that a master level Rhea would be a goblin killing expert. I guess he’s trying to teach him that the only consistent way of killing goblins is: Be smarter, be luckier, but most of all be Crueler.

He could have a hidden pocket with a dagger, but even if he did not a pocket of space would exist between his robes or clothes... typically holding poison. Though the answer is likely (hope), (dust/ air), (possibility/ chance), or... he is messing with him ^.^

It would have actually made sense, sort of? Like, a self-loathing goblin who hates his own people so much he wants to see it destroyed. It would have been quite ironic. Maybe the Slayer's last test could have been to kill his own master.
It would have been like doom , where a demon helps doom slayer by enhancing his armor .
@@thesuperpierre59 That Demon in Doom was terrified that he'd die to The Slayer. This Hobbit however, has no fear. All of his work for GS, was in hatred and spite for Goblins.

Volume 9 of the LN really shows you how well his master trained him, when in a desperate situation he kept coming up with new strategies to survive in a hopeless situation when other adventures would have likely cracked and done something reckless
You know what I find really cool about this scene? Considering dice are repeatedly used to hint at D&D and other TTRPGs, that the show is based on one could assume the show is essentially a fairly dark RPG campaign. "The moment you make the decision to do something and act on it, you win" in this context is fairly interesting, because it is not a player who decides what the Goblin Slayer does and controls him. Usually when a player decides his character would do something, they have to roll for it, to see whether they succeed. So the Goblin Slayer just acting on his own would bypass the dice, and thus the chance to fail. Definitely meta as hell and I'm pretty sure it wasn't intended, but it's neat.
I think it probably was intended, given that the tagline of Goblin Slayer is "he doesn't let anyone roll the dice"
episode 3 the gods rolled the dice over and over again..it's a DND reference also another fact none of the characters have names...think of GS childhood friend is literally called cow girl..elf is long ears there's no names just nicknames based of on their race or what they do. hopes this helps
The whole series is just a transcription of the authors DnD campaign he had with his friends that he turned into a web novel then a LN.

Exactly, in no small measure because there are quite a few plausible answers to such open ended riddles. GS’s answer was better than mine, but my answer to the first riddle was power. Power can be wielded for justice or wickedness. The rich need it to protect their riches, a need the poor simply do not share. There are holes to this answer but it’s not fully wrong.
For the second, I answered personal “myself” or “my personal demons”. Mostly correct unless you want to quibble on the talking point or the “suddenly there” point.
All things considered, I think the Rhea wanted both thoughtful and quick answers, but he wasn’t horribly particular on what the exact answer would be.

the whole "it will appear before you in any place at any time" doesn't really apply fully to death because the most impactful thing death can do is linger behind you, and haunt you till it catches up to you in the end.
@@RasmodeusQ I think the point in the death insight was the rhea trying to instill in goblin slayer a sense of caution and the fragility of life. Hence “any place and any time”. I would say that you can’t have a real conversation with yourself. You might be able to talk at yourself, but that’s just a more enthusiastic and vigorous method of thinking in my experience. But I quibble a little.

Goblin Slayer’s master is basically Bilbo Baggins if the master of bag end was an assassin rather than a burglar or heavily influenced by Thorin in personality and fighting

I’m pretty sure that the author was inspired by Tolkien’s burglar Bilbo Baggins for the master of Goblin Slayer. Both characters were called using Japanese term “shinobi” (which usually means ninja nowadays even though the Tolkien’s book said burglar for Mr. Baggins)
A mention of “what is in my pocket” is a nod of respect to the originally inspired character from Tolkien’s work.

One thing I love about this anime. Even if there was a story of 3 fighting the demon lord. There’s also stories like GS. Little guys who still achieved something bigger. The ones made fun of, with the intentions that still protect everyone.
I like the fact that the goblins are called "Kooni" like the fusion of the words "Ko = child" and "Oni = Demon"... it's so fitting...

@@Red_Heresy, when his master asked him, "what is in my pocket?". its the exact same line Bilbo Baggins asked Golum when they were playing the riddle game in the goblin cave(from the Hobbit, an unexpected journey). Golum demanded Bilbo to ask him a riddle so Bilbo asks him, "What have i got in my pocket?" That's the reference.
fun fact: apparently the creator of Goblin slayer is a huge fan of the LOTR. That's also why the elf calls goblin slayer OrcBlog,(also a name from the LOTR, im not sure where)

Well no surprise it sounds like a LOTR reference, he IS a massive Bilbo Baggins reference, nearly every aspect of him pays homage to the Hobbit. He's a Rhea which is this worlds equivalent of halflings, his name/job is Burglar, he likes riddles, uses a magic ring that lets him disappear and re-appear at will, he has platinum mail hidden under his clothes and one of his most well known nicknames amongst rogues was "Barrel Rider". He literally can't be more of a Bilbo reference if he tried.

This is one Master who clearly gives the idea of how there is a "method to his madness"
The references to the Lord of the Rings in this show are brilliant but never obsessive, it's truly an amazing series.
The Brilliant part of this is what he was actually teaching GS.
Never stop thinking. Stop thinking and deciding and you’re goblin food. When GS gets into a rhythm, his master throws him a curveball, to show him how quickly a situation can change on him. Notice how it didn’t seem that the answer being correct was particularly important, only well thought out, and delivered quickly.

Its funny this is a weird form of actual military training i think. they put you in a precarious position then ask you basic questions which force you to think. which is perfect for a broken guy with no emotions

Nah he is just assasin/thief version of Goblin Slayer what he would be like if he never had his party. Consumed by his vanagance against goblins, until all his sanity and social skills eroded away.

This is why I liked the show, i dont even know what the master is and makes me excited to see more different creatures

The Goblin Slayer can be as quick, smart and prepared as he wants, but he will never be FULLY prepared. He simply CAN NOT know what he has in his pocket, same way you can never truly know what reality has in its pocket for you.
The closest he can get to being fully prepared is by expecting the unexpected, being conscious of his own ignorance and fallibility, of the unknown.

I gotta say other anime make goblins seem almost harmless in some very very rare cases somewhat neat but this show takes all of that and put a pitch black-like evil filter on them to the point were you just wanna go into the show and just demonically massacre packs and armies of them
