My main issue with the Heroquest expansions is that the cards inside the boxes have no icons whatsoever to indicate the expansion they belong to. Which I find so frustrating when I have to sort them back into their boxes because pretty much every board game with expansions today has them and it shouldn’t be an issue money-wise to add. Plus when you’re spending big bucks on a product of Hasbro you’d expect it to be well thought out, organised and have some quality of life at least to make it up for the cost. Unless I’m missing something.
I sleeve my cards. What I do is put a color sticker on the bottom left of the sleeve face. It doesn't damage the card and allows me to keep track of the expansion. I put the same sticker on the manual. I bought a sheet of quarter inch dot stickers in different colors.
regarding storage: everything released so far including all the crowdfunding bonuses will fit into the core box once you get rid of those terrible plastic trays. :) (i know this because i have promised my wife that i'll only buy as much HQ as can fit in the one box, and i haven't stopped buying stuff yet....)
Am sooo happy that HeroQuest is BACK on the Menu! I got myself all the expansion packs and with a tweak, a houserule and some more players together this will be a GREAT time ^^
The beauty about hero quest is also being able to improve more challenge or change anything up as wished, thats what i do :) if a quest seems a little lackluster just change it up a little as you go.
No worries. Hopefully you watched the rest of the HQ series to see what else I have to say about the game. Might surprise you. :) And there's much more HQ to come.
Hey all Divers, and good evening. :) I hope everyone had a great weekend. Thank you, Daniel, for covering all the HQ stuff. Enjoying this and loving it! TY for everything you do. Have a great day all, stay safe, happy gaming,t talk to you soon. :)
Stellar review man. As someone who got introduced to tabletop gaming partially through HQ, this game has a special place in my heart and collection. While I still have some of the old stuff, and even managed to get Against the Ogre Horde for a reasonable price, I was never able to get my hands on the other rare expansions. Been on the fence as to whether I should get the new ones just so I can finally have a version of them. This vid was really helpful seeing what exactly you get with each one. Thanks!
I still have the original box of Against the Ogre Horde and Kellars Keep. Unfortunately I threw out the original Return of the Witch Lord box a long time ago long before it all became worth a lot of money. It was one of those collapseable boxes which is why I threw it out while Kellars and Ogre are actual stiff carboard boxes and I kept them to use them as storage boxes.
Thank you for the overview of the products. I'm really excited to see the mods for the game. I haven't had a chance to dive into those but love the base game.
thanks for the vid ,Looking forward to buy all these expansions the next few days and start drawing my own cards and stuff. I really liked the comment about spinal tap! you nailed it!
Great video! Back in the day I only had the base game, so this new edition has been a dream come true for me. I am playing mostly solo with the app and I'm enjoying a lot (but I control myself the monsters with my own pseudo-AI system and giving them some special abilities) Looking forward to the 3rd part!!
I got the mythic tier when it came out which was fantastic because i never got to play Kellars Keep & Return of the witch Lord as we never got them in NZ
To be fair, we generally all played it rules as written until we ran out of quests. THEN we started modifying it & adding to it to keep things different. I don't think anyone got the Boxed sets for the first time & said "let us only play with these house rules that just appeared fully formed in my head".
Just google "Heroquest what is mind" for a really good example of what I was talking about. People even back in the day were coming up with different ways to use the stat. Maybe I just talk with more tinkerers than you do, but from my investigations, almost no one ever played 100% RAW - the game's rules even encourage Zargon to get creative. But that's awesome that people did! That's the best thing about these kinds of games - there are so many different ways to play. I usually end up house ruling almost every game I play for the Dungeon Dive. But that's just me. :)
Not sure if they missed the mark with keeping the game and the first two expansions true to the original. I think there are those in the HQ community that would have balked (despite the flaws) if they deviated too much too early on. Moving forward though, I do hope to see more creativity and new stuff.
Only one I'm missing currently is Rise of the Dread Moon. Can't afford it right now but I'm hoping I can get it one day. Same for the Ogre Horde when it comes out. Things are tight right now.
True, many fans house rule HeroQuest, but I believe the casuals stick to the rules more and there are usually more casuals then superfans imho. I think BGG and other fan sites may give false impressions that house ruling is more prevalent than it is since the superfans are generally more vocal on sites like that.
As a long time follower I knew you couldn't resist this title much longer, BUT, an impressive peaceful protest up until now none-the-less. May your views and subscribes ascend!
The inserts for Heroquest are horrible. The miniatures get stuck and if you paint them you can’t really put them back in those inserts anymore without damaging them.
Great video. But I think you missed the point of including more green skins and undead in Kellars Keep and Return of The Witch Lord. The "power" of these creatures lay in their ability to horde, something 3 skeletons can hardly do. When I bought these expansions during HQ's original release back in the 90s, I was pleased to add to my legions of green skins and undead. Of course, not as excited as I would later be about the entirely new monsters of the Elf and Barbarian quest packs. Your point isn't invalid. Just a little short-sighted...maybe.
Loving this coverage. Have you checked out the Rogue Heir character expansion? The difference from the new heroes to the original 4 is so stark. I really do hope they eventually go back and add skills and upgrades to the original 4.
You should have no trouble finding it. It’s a really cool addition to the game. There is also the Commander of the Gusrdian Knights which was a limited exclusive and will cost an arm or leg to obtain - but you have Rise of the Dread Moon so you really wouldn’t need it unless you must have everything.
As someone just getting in HQ I have a question and it may be a stupid one so I’ll apologise in advance, the various cards you get with the expansions just get added into their corresponding decks in the base game or do you keep them separate ? I know some cards are exclusive to the expansion but do the cards that are duplicates of the core box just get added into the main decks ? Also is there any reason that you have to use the 4 core hero’s from the beginning of the core box or can you use the expansion hero’s in the core box quests ? Again I apologise if these are dumb questions
Not dumb questions at all! We all start somewhere. Most of the cards from the expansions can be added to their respective decks. Sometimes you will have some cards that are only used in certain expansions / quests. You can use any hero in any questions, except for the few quests specifically made for a certain solo hero. I think so far we have quests for the Elf and Barb.
Thanks, that’s really helpful, I’m currently making my way through your HQ videos there really interesting and well put together and your channel as a whole is really good keep up the good work and I’m sure I’ll chime in with question hear and there
I bought every expansion, however my core box is in Polish language (as my natural), but people don't interesting much of this title in my country, so I decided to mixed two language versions. I hope there will be no important differences in card quality (e.g., like colours).
I don't like the app either & so I don't use it. I've been using solo rules from BBG. I may just be Zargon & run a friend through the book adventures just to see what it's like (never played them). On top of HeroQuest, it looks like you have a lot of cool stuff for 4AD now too 😄
The problem is if Avalon hill tinkered too much with the base game, kelars keep and return of the witch lord. They'd have all been hanged for heresy by some very angry old school fans.
Are you going to cover descent 2nd edition with similar depth ? I would like to know your thoughts on that game vs his one and to be covered as deeply as this one. Also what do you think about key to the kingdom the new vs the old edition.
Much prefer the first edition of Descent, with homebrewed rules of course, to any of the later ones. The second just have way too short quests to give it a real quest/campaign/dungeon feel. And I really like my board games to be board games and not app games, so the third one definitely isn't for me either (though I own it, as I actually thought that the app was optional).
I have deep dive series looking at Warhammer Quest, Shadows of Brimstone, Runebound, WHQ Silver Tower, and Secrets of the Lost Tomb. Next year I’ll be doing one for Arkham Horror 2e and possibly Myth at some point.
Key to the kingdom is a mediocre game aimed at teenagers. But it has in my opinion a very strong old school art and environment. The new edition although I haven’t played it seems far away from that
Daniel, you lamented the fact that the enemies in the core game do not have ranged abilities, but you didn't highlight (I may have missed it) the ranged enemies in the later expansions; starting with the Mercenary Crossbowman (ally/foe) in The Frozen Horror set & the Elven Archer in The Mage of the Mirror. This entire series is, as stated, from the POV of someone with almost zero experience or reverence for the original. Which is exactly why I discussed in the series that I would have preferred the Restoration Games treatment.
@@TheDungeonDive I suppose it's a question of for whom it was made. Nostalgics / Long time fans, or new fans. :) Changing rules or box content takes more time and money, and would probably result in a new edition or something, but that would also mean that people who actually wanted to play the old stuff was out of luck, because of the price tag on classic HQ.

All these expansions seem so bad, not thought through and just crappy in general. Sad that you can be missing half your brain and still release expansions to a pretty good game like Hero Quest.
Keeping just about everything the way it was is extremely important to the product and legacy of the product. Sure more advanced things have come but they are not heroquest. And adding new rules is purely up to the player as it was 30 years ago when supplements were coming out and as the internet blossomed in the 90s bet your bottom dollar so did the community and sharing ideas. You yourself have said you have no attachment to this piece of actual board game history when many many many more do have that. And to buy the og content again after all these years and not pay scalpers is an amazing thing and it's done well for them. That is the reason why the product to you feels old because it is. But there is 30 years of fan addition to go through which adds so much great content and changes the way. But if they were to release this not the way it was it wouldn't have sold well.
I disagree with your stance on not changing some things. Kellar's and Witch Lord could have been big box expansions, half of the tiles included should have been plastic miniatures. The Dwarven forge, the tombs, statues, etc. They also could have broadened the monster roster by including.minis used for specific bosses. The Witch Lord should have had his own mini, and not just the one locked in the (as of writing) $600 mythic box. It might even have generated additional sales, as I know plenty of people across social media who buy multiple copies of expansions for the extra furniture. Nobody is buying kellar's twice for more goblins.
All the expansions! That is a huge (money) commitment for the video series :) Now that you showed it all, i think the one area Heroquest did better than its spirital successors like shadow over Hammerhal or Altar Quest etc is the Homebrew friendly nature. Are you getting it to be played solo or rules as written?
@TheDungeonDive solo with the app. Realize you don't use the app. Ruled out the first two with duplicate models.
Yeah. Good choice. I would get one the two most recent expansions, as they add the most new stuff. Deathrak or Dread Moon.
Honestly. I'de be fine with the repeat enemies in the expansion if they used alt sculpts for them.
I could get behind that as well.
Awesome
App not available in EU?! Weird.
Sorry if it’s been asked already. But can you use the cards like artefacts from the expansion in the main game. Just shuffle them into those decks ??
Yes.
