I like that on the surface it seems like Crybaby dumbed down the character of Ryo by seemingly stripping away his compassion, only to make it Ryo's final revelation laying beside Akira's corpse that he was capable of love all along. Akira was the only one who ever saw him that way ("you're crying too, Ryo"), and Ryo had to burn up all the love and compassion from Akira's heart to be able to see it himself. Shit was beautiful.

Honestly I’m happy devil man crybaby took as many liberties as it did and changed up things. To me, if you’re just going to copy and paste the source material, why not just read the source material? As long as it captures the spirit is the important thing. And I think devil man crybaby does do that. It just does it in a different way.

      Well. It's good.
But i think before having a story with a lot of liberties, we must get a proper adaptation first.
Besides, it's just not fair, there hasn't been an anime with 60's and 70's style in years since Shin Mazinger Z in late 2000's. And "outdated" is not an excuse, as 90's had a 60's Giant Robo adapted into anime which both had old-school atmosphere and modern animation.
I mean, come on. With Bioshock and Fallout games being popular you cannot say that having 60's and 70's designs would make anime look outdated.

@@OGfromGst In Manga, there can be only one left after demon and human merged into one, otherwise they both die. As for Crybaby, it seems such problem does not exist, and two consciousness could possibly fight each other anytime. I think Miki's cat is purely a demon but she just didn't like Satan. Manga stories revealed that demons did have their social lives and sense of moral before went to slumber, but they were far less rational than humans.

    • @AmaryInkawult
      @AmaryInkawult 5 років тому +60

毛利沢东 yeah, you may have a human heart as a devilman, but the instincts and urges of the demon are also there. The poor kid could barely control his demonic hunger. Akira suffers bloodlust. Miko wasn't able to control her initial abilities in the manga such as spraying her bullies. Yeah being a devilman doesn't mean you're 100% in control. Your emotions and willpower needs to be in check.

Crybaby is a more streamlined experience, which puts more weight on emotions and symbolism, and less on story/action/character complexity. And this kind of approach fits more with yuasa's surrealist style. The original manga had a stronger story and a more detailed world/realistic characters, reading the original felt like reading a novel (comic), on the other hand watching crybaby felt like reading a poem. Emotions felt more raw

I want a Mokushiroku Amon figurine so very badly, I fell in love with how he looks like this weird Geigeresque alien reptilemonkey THING. Darkside of Devilman and VS Hades are seriously my favorites as far as the non-Go Nagai art styles go.
The only thing I don't like from the original OVAs is Devilman's tail. It's just so... Lifeless, next to how in the AMON OVA it flows and coils like a proper limb instead of the original's robot cosplay tail. (says a lot that it's the only thing that got to me!)
As for the OVA music, you ever checked out the Japan-only PS1 Devilman game? BEC has a knack for composing tracks that sound like they fit the franchises they make the games for, and they even threw in a second "plotline" that's basically full of shout-outs to the '72 anime in the Special TV mode.

I still dream of an accurate Devilman Anime Adaptation in style of 70's science horror that original Manga had.
And to anybody saying that this style of story would be too outdated for modern audiences...
Well, look, 90's had an anime adaptation of 60's Giant Robo and it was done in style of 60's science fiction, and it looked so fantastic. Felt like an old movie, but with a lot of modern (At the time of 90's) twists, designs were from 60's, but quality of animation was 90's. I really wish to see a modern anime in style of 70's... but sadly modern anime industry is oversaturated in pleasing today's audience...
I'm also confused why there hasn't been a 70's styled anime in years since Shin Mazinger Z and Enma-Kun. I like that Dororo has a new adaptation... but i'm sad that they didn't used Osamu Tezuka's style.
Look, today style is good. But it's just not fair that they haven't done at least one anime in style of 60's or 70's anime in years. ...Osomatsu doesn't count, it's a comedy. I'm talking about serious plot.

I was excited to see Jinmen, didn’t expect it to be that heavy emotionally wise.
Crybaby totally caught me off in general on how much they modernized and how they changed a few things here and there. It was something definitely familiar yet a breath of fresh air. It had its flaws for sure, but heya, it definitely put our favorite Demon back into the spotlight, especially here in the states.

@@diejobWHO To be fair enough, I also too love and prefer Crybaby as well. But there's a bunch of Devilman fans felt Crybaby is loosely based off the manga which the readers felt it's too different compared to the Devilman OVA which they hail as the only anime that stands true to the original manga.
For Crybaby, it does show similar elements from various Devilman series as well. Miko "Miki" Kuroda's personality, sexuality and overall domineering character, who shown jealously and love for Miki Makimura, seem to be strongly indicative of Aoi Kurosaki, a character who also shown rivalry and affection for Jun Fudo in the Devilman Lady manga, and the ideas of Zennon's three forms combining into one mighty demon is similar to both Devilman Lady and Devilman Saga. And a rape scene occurs where Akira/Devilman humiliate Sirene is the idea from Gekiman as well.
I hope that this Devilman could at least get an anime adaptation for its 50th Anniversary in 2022. To me, it felt like it misses an important scene until they're altered or replaced.

For me, Crybaby is an amazing adaptation despite how different it is from the source material. That is because it still manages to capture the feeling of dread and tragedy that the original had. Even though I knew exactly what was going to happen, since I read the manga and watched the OVAs, I was blown away by all the new content and the changes they did to some characters, both in their roles, personalities and fates. It honestly worked well, since not only did the show surprise those that were new to Devilman, but it surprised those that were already familiar with the original.

    Great video.
While already getting the Manga all the Devilman Classic, Devilman G as well as Devilman Vs Hades manga adaptations all of these versions of the story of Devilman points to different pieces of information and how they can be interpreted differently.
While I got the Devilman OVA on DVD over a decade ago from MANGA Entertainment, I didn't really know the original story until years later when I started finding out all the different versions of Devilman thanks to the manga fan translation sites like Manga Fox.
Then there was the original Toei Anime that I got when Diskotec released it for the first time on DVD which I had to import it from America to Australia and I am so thankful I had a multi region DVD player to watch it.
I also remember that in the Toei Anime, the ending theme was a song that was parodied years later in the Anime OVA Puni Puni Poemy that was a parody of Magical Girl that included the ending theme song of Toei Devilman anime during I think it was episode 2 of the Puni Puni Poemy OVA.
I hope that Gekiman gets released physically else I may have to read it online from the fan translation sites like I often have had to do with so many manga series that have had no physical translated releases.

I believe that Devilman Vs Hades is the next step after finishing the original Manga from the 70s. (however each version of the Devilman Manga is it's own separate story so keep that in mind when reading Devilman Vs Hades)
And for a completely different story of Devilman I highly Recogmend Devilman G (Devilman Grimoire) as Miki plays more of a heroine role in the story. Out of all the other interpretations of the Devilman story (outside of the original manga story) this is my fav overall.
And for manga you can read online on the fan translation sites, Devilman Lady is perhaps the best to read up in my opinion and even get Gekiman as the video here did mention it was Go Nagai's own biography of how he created the series and each chapter covers the events of the original manga as well as what Go Nagai was going though in his life when trying to come up with certain events.
Such as when he was drawing the scene where Sirene and her other demons were about to attack the Makimura family, Go Nagai was drawing the intense build up to that scene of Miki in the bathroom all night that he ended up sleeping in the Manga studio all night and fell asleep on the table he was drawing it on.
You may also want to check out a Devilman manga that is more in tune to the original 70s Toei Anime, just view the videos from the Manly Anime Hero (The Anime Hero) to find the one that is most likely that version and try to find the manga of that name.
Or the fan translation sites that list every search result in Devilman or Go Nagai would be the best possible path to more Devilman content that have been written over the years.
Also the most recent one Devilman Saga is another one to check out if you want something that puts a completely different twist in the Devilman story.
And finally, read the series Violence Jack, as that character is more like a reincarnation of Amon if that can explain the apocalyptic world.

It's a series that goes into detail about the horrors of war and dangers of mistrust and paranoia, that has an inherently evil race in a conflict that is a black and white "us or them" where our only chance of surviving is genocide, which is completely guilt free because the other side is pure evil.

    A. In the original, Sachiko tells Akira to finish him off because she had already died and holding back served no purpose, but in hell she's berating and shit talking Akira for letting her be damned to the underworld

    • @THEAnimeHERO

It comes down to fear & anxiety. I felt Crybaby relied more on shock factor than actual horror. Many events do move quite fast as it was designed for viewers to quickly consume the show as possible hence with every ep having a cliffhanger. The choice of music is immersive but not every track makes you feel terrified instead you're bobbing your head to it which removes the fear. The art style is meant to grab your attention with it's odd motion and colorful palette. While they were gross & violent imagery it doesn't make you feel scared at what your seeing. For some people it did manage to make them feel sad & maybe shocked at its explicit nature but I dont think anyone really felt fear. While Crybaby does cover the most manga events than previous Devilman it doesn't have its ominous spirit. The manga was made during the Vietnam War & the story reflects that. Go Nagai relied on numerous shadows, silhouettes & some unique angles to help sell the idea of being tainted by evil & worry for the future of mankind. While 10 episodes should be enough time to cover the whole thing I felt reading the story to be the most leisurely paced. Reading it for the 1st time & having no idea what would happen the story has a way of swallowing you with a grip of history. The only other manga that gave me the same experience was Alabaster by Osamu Tezuka.

8:05 Here is a correction with very strong SPOILERS of the Devilman Lady manga.
Sachiko appears in hell still attached to Jinmen's body with the other souls, when Akira was helping Devilman Lady to lower the levels of hell so that she would leave that world, and after having a second confrontation against him (One very well drawn by the way) after killing him Sachiko's spirit is released and she goes to heaven.
In fact, in the chapters of hell, Go Nagai took up ideas that he could not in the original manga, such as: The romance of Siren and Amon, which literally after a confrontation, he calls Akira Amon and Kailm tells him that he already It's not her beloved Amon, making that relationship canon in the manga.

It's a kinda. Those lancers did succeed in killing Jenny and are likely to be the closest thing to a Demonbuster but they served a different purpose. I think the Crybaby military took some scenes away from them. In Crybaby, there was no special forces going door to door and taking people away. The lack of the scifi gear was the biggest departure for me. In the manga, their approach was a big deal as they became a way for humans to fight back against the demons. But that same hope was twisted to fear as anyone suspicious would be "arrested" by them but in truth they were often experimented on or killed. It was the hunted becoming the hunter and the indiscriminate losses they brought. They scientists and the Demonbusters delivered the paranoia unto people and those frightened people are the reasons why Miki and her brother are killed. It started with Ryo's exposed recording of Akira's demon transformation which made the Demonbusters take Miki's parents. When people found out that the Makimura's were living with a demon, they developed a mob mentality to kill them. This was changed alot in Crybaby with Miki's brother becoming a demon/devilman and their parents getting killed that way. The social media posting of demons during the Devilman hug scene is what replaced the demonbusters and paranoid mob.

The demon hunters make a small little somewhat cameo in the Netflix adaptation, I’m pretty sure there supposed to be the spear man

Probably. It was that uncertainty that made me unsure to include them in that segment.
