      Even though Shonen manga are primarily targeted towards teenage boys (12-18), Devil Man's gore and theme was over the top for that demographic which was why the series was bumped into Seinen (for adult men) in the next series. But of course in the 80's, Shonen manga were getting bloody as hell but not nearly as over the top. But Devil Man remains as one of the most over the top gore fest manga.

In fact, three out of the six I mentioned along with others I haven't, are a high possibility to being one of them too. The opening shows that, the very first episode does that, even how he contrasts Akira's dark aesthetic with his white clothes make it obvious that Ryo is the bad guy
      I liked Ryo, he seemed like that he was remorseless because he was just that way, that he was born that way and there was little to change about that. Scientiest apparently believe that sciopaths have a lack of human understanding because of an underdeveloped frontal lobe, so in real life, it's also just a way some people are born

      Probably the reason why they had track and field was the indicator of how mankind evolved for survival, which can arguably be one of the themes to the show. Animals have speed, strength, the one thing that humans have are stamina, we last longer in our feet for us to chase our meals, another means of survival, such as the means of survival as the demons going back and forth with God and the human dilemma, don't bite my head off just speculation, peace people.

    OKAY OKAY OKAY I HAVE A THEORY
    and this has been on my mind 25/7 since I finished the series yesterday
    Obviously, Devilman Crybaby is filled with tons of symbolism, many of which is implied and some of which is revealed during the epic finale (in which we discover that Ryo was actually Satan all along). Going back to other episodes earlier in the series, it’s obvious that this was teased from the very first seconds of the first episode. This made me think... what other symbolism has been right under the noses of viewers from the beginning? Here’s my theory:
    First, Miki Makimura. From the beginning, she is portrayed is pure, innocent, beautiful, and desirable. Despite the fact that her character isn’t created to be overtly sexual, she attains the attention of guy after guy during the show. And despite all of the chaos that ensues (especially during the 8th and 9th episodes), she remains hopeful and positive up until her own demise. Throughout the show, a large part of her character’s personal conflict is her strange relationship with Miko, who spends the entire series trying to match up to her skill and beauty. Despite this, shes never quite good enough, and dies confessing that her jealousy towards Miki was formed out of love and admiration.
    Backstory aside, all of the religious symbolism throughout the show made me think of characters within the Bible who embodied Miki‘s traits: purity, divine beauty, and a feeling of being “chosen” by one of the most powerful beings alive (in this case, Akira)- the Virgin Mary. Now I know this sounds crazy, but stick with me. In the Bible, Mary is portrayed as being virginal, pure, young, and innocent, kind to others and chosen by a higher power to mother Jesus, the son of God. I’ll elaborate some more, but first, I’ll cover my second symbolic representation...
    Akira. Over the course of the series, Akira is shown to be facing an inner battle of good versus evil, which is physically shown as his struggle to balance both his demonic and human forms. Although he attempts to keep his demonic side hidden, it is eventually revealed to everyone at the end and is utilized during the final battle in an attempt to defeat Ryo, aka Satan. The relationship between Ryo and Akira is an interesting one- formed over years and years of memorable experiences together, it is as if Ryo and Akira have known each other for far longer than portrayed on the surface. In a way, Akira appears to be the “chosen one”- inhabited by the most powerful demon Amon, he is still able to retain his human heart and emotions, which enable him to carry a strong sense of caring and concern for those around him. During the 8th and 9th episodes, Akira does all that he can to save both the demons and humans, believing that there is good to be seen in everyone, regardless of their form. In an especially powerful scene in episode 9, Akira stands in front of a row of humans being brutally stoned to the point of near murder, begging for the attackers to cease their attacks and to kill him instead- a sort of sacrifice. For all the human race has done to hurt Akira, he is still willing to sacrifice himself in order to save them... sort of like Jesus.
    I know that this is a stretch, but to me, it makes sense. From the beginning, there seems to be a strong conflict between Akira and Ryo, and although a reason isn’t provided outright, it appears on the surface that the altruistic nature of Akira is in direct contrast to the nihilistic and cynical nature of Ryo. That being said, the love they share for each other is inevitable, especially in the final scene, in which it is revealed that Satan feels genuine sorrow for killing what was once his best friend. In the Bible, the apocalypse is discussed many times, and it is stated that during the darkest days, Jesus will return to defeat Satan once and for all. Many “warriors” fight alongside Akira during this final battle, sacrificing themselves in the hopes of defeating Satan once and for all. Although this isn’t the outcome of the show, the final battle between Akira and Ryo mirrors this conflict, and the tears shed by Ryo at the very end indicate a change that many would think impossible, brought on by the love of Akira himself.
    Going back to Miki, the love that she shares with Akira is imminent, although in a different way than one might think. Several times throughout the series she comforts Akira by telling him that they are “family”, despite not being relatives by blood. The love Akira feels for Miki is much more romantic, as he desires to protect and care for her as he views her as incredibly pure and innocent. Despite the introduction of several overtly sexual characters throughout the show, Akira desires the love of Miki, which he is never fully able to obtain.
    Though I admit it is a strange comparison to call Miki Akira’s symbolic “mother”, it feels a lot less strange if you consider their relationship to be a bond of protection and pure love, two innocent spirits who desire peace and kindness within the world. Although it is shown in the end that this is impossible, the fact that Akira made such a divine impact on both Miki and Ryo indicates his own divine nature and his ability to change the world.
    Anyways, just my two sense.

      It's an interesting perspective and worthy of reading. There are some comparisons to certain religious texts but they are more utilized in the original 1972 manga version released in English as the Devilman classic collection. There's also details mentioning Dante's Divine Comedy, survival of the fittest & certain witch hunts in Europe during the middle ages. I would recommend also reading the manga as there's plenty of differences between them allowing for a bigger experience. I read the manga when I was in my senior year of high school as part of what I called my Horror-Thon in October, where essentially I went around watching and reading any horror based thing I could get my hands on. Even though I knew how things would end, it still got to me.

    For me crybaby was my first time actually watching Devilman. I had long just tossed it in with other hyper violent shows of it's time like violence Jack and fist of the North Star. But after having watched the show I realized that nearly every one of my favorite shows have Devilman to thank for it's inspiration. I am planning on collecting the Devilman manga to put next to my berserk collection. This retrospective is helpful because I had no idea that devil man grimoire is recent, and no idea the Hades series was recent as well.

    • @iliveinsideyourhouse1367
      @iliveinsideyourhouse1367 6 років тому +1

      Violence jack and fist of north star too has many influence on shonen genre and post apocalyptic genre.

    • @zoidsfan12
      @zoidsfan12 6 років тому

      I live inside your house I actually later went back an watched fist of the Northstar and found I really enjoyed it. But due to a stigma for hyper violent shows I put most of them off for years. Being a huge fan of mad Max fist of the North star appealed to me. Berserk was the show that started really opening my eyes to absolute brutality having it's own place in art. Also part of the reason I never got into Devilman was because my only exposure was the bennetthesage review of the ova. Lately I've been trying to track down every single Devilman related anime. Crybaby really reinvigorated my love for anime.

      Xenon was the three people holding the demon meetings so he's introduced subtly. Psycho Jenny took most of his work. Xenon wasn't that "big" of a deal compared to his manga debut but at least it was better than his last animated appearance being the chibi ova.

    Great video, you always do an awesome job whenever you review an anime, I give mad props for, not only all the work you put into making the video, but to the things you discussed in the video.
    I hope what you said at 21:43 happens, because i'm so pissed off that there are only 9 chapters translated of the original "Tiger Mask". Everywhere I looked, there hasn't been a place to even read the 10th chapter. I also wanted to read "Star of the Giants", and the only thing I could find was the first episode of the anime, this is so frustrating.
