Kev, recently found your videos. Just love that you document just how it is. Very real and encouraging, even in hardship, to those of us living in similar situations!
This actually happened to me, I was using my work van and decided to get changed in the back. I left my phone in the front of the van so didn't have that. Jumped in the back and pulled the door shut, it wouldn't open. No matter what I tried, the side door wouldn't open nor would the back. I kicked and rammed the door but the lock wouldn't move. Only saving grace was someone went to check what took me so long and seen the lights flashing and stopped, I screamed like mad and they let me out.
If you ever get this problem again, or anything happens with the new fobs, you can open the door panels (usually on poppers), and disconnect the actuator cables on each door. That removes all central locking, but lets you treat the van like an old school van, with key only locking, on each door independently. The mechanical locks will still work with the key, just not the remote locking. At least you can then lock your doors in an emergency. Once you've done it once, it takes 5 mins to do on each door.
Subscribed Kev. Well done you , doing this. I will be on this journey soon. Got my van a peugeot boxer and doing the conversion . Want to get out of the rat race myself. Great channel and its real. Not glossed up and picture perfect . Well done 👏
New sub watching from Japan (UK expat). Mate, if it's just the battery in the fob, that should be an easy self-change? Hope you haven't been ripped off! Love the content and looking forward to seeing how the van changes over time.
My 2017 Transit the key when in ignition and on, charges the key fob battery. I have to remember to swap it every 6 months or so. Same here in Aussie, around $600AUD to replace one key. I paid $50 AUD for a basic key to manually lock/unlock door locks....just in case. Rupert is such a placid fella.
Good tip! The keys I've got now have batteries that can be easily changed so I fell much safer/better. Rupert is 11 or so years old and has quietened down a lot but still as mad a box of frogs when he wants to be! 😂🤣
Oh no kev After your van problems I thought things would be looking up for you . So sorry to hear about the keys. Fingers crossed 🤞 you will get a break ❤
Hi Kev👋🏻, Just subscribed too your channel ....Rupert is a lovely dog 🐶 ...what breed is he & how old? I see you just done your shop at Asda🙀 ; Only if there was one in your area “Aldi’s” would be cheaper & dare I say just as good. Good chat just got to the bit about your van key so unless someone kidnappes you /Rupert I ll keep 👀. Take care 👍🏻🏴
Hi Jan, thanks for watching, Rupert is a cross Staffy/Boxer and mad as a box of frogs! He's getting old and almost completely deaf now, but he's a very happy dog, Kev
Sorry to see that you had key and locking problems that cost you money which you couldn't really afford to part with. I had a transit minibus that had been fully converted into a camper and took up part time vanlife to try it out, with the idea of doing it full time and give up the gaff and the bills. Problem after problem i had with it, central locking, egr valve, wheel sensors, exhaust pipe fell off broken leaf spring and then the heater wouldn't turn off. I had enough and got rid of it and I will never have another transit, whatever its age or model ever again. They are total shite!. I just hope that you never get the problems that I had which cost me over 4k in repairs. Mine had only done 88k miles and was only 6 years old.
Hi, thank you for your message. Yes, vans are a bit of a lottery! I have lots of work van during my time so I'm used to them going wrong and having to spend money getting them fixed but that's just life unfortunately, cheers, Kev
Hari OM Phew... I feel for you. Clearly Transits are not all that standard - my side slider will open from the inside, even if central locking engaged, so have a quick escape if necessary. I had cause to wonder if my key fob needed a new battery and couldn't for the life of me see how it opened... it does, but it took quite a bit of coaxing! As it turned out, the battery was fine, it was a protection measure of The Grey not switching on due to my having moved the wheel the wrong way before engaging, and it would have prevented theft! (Can't hotwire an EV...) I have parked in several places where haven't bothered with locking the van at night - however, do have added security of door limiter on the top of the back door (not more than six inches can be opened), and on the side, I have a jammer in the form of a heavy ottoman. Have got Blink CCTV to install as well. Give Rupert a few extra ear tickles from me! YAM xx
