Ok it's a cliche to say "this movie was a fever dream i barely remember" but that is absolutely true for this opening scene. Very disconnected, what is going on with the camera and blocking at the end there, and a spaceship design of a glass bubble vs the interior being genetic mutants that look like they come from star trek? Just a ton of weird choices you immediately forget until you see the scene again years later.
Really wish Matt Le Blanc did more action/scifi movies. I know he used to get criticized for his acting ability. He would do great against all the modern trash "actors" we now have to put up with.
So, by 2058, the United States, Russia, China, Iran, Iraq, France, England, North Korea, South Korea, and a host of other nations had "forgotten" their differences? Really? Did they forget the 100,000+ nuclear weapons, as well as submarines, jet fighters, armored tanks, bombers, and other weapons? It's amazing what the nations can do in a few decades.
Should bear in mind this was made in the 90s, the decade following the end of the cold war where no one really saw East or West anymore and prospects for a much brighter future were on everyone's minds now that former powerful adversaries were now friends. When the USSR dissolved, we and Russia did in fact scale back our arms considerably (we have huge boneyards full of aircraft retired when the cold war ended). So it was not outlandish to assume more efforts for true peace would come along in the next 50+ years then, and by 2058, it would then be assumed we'd have almost completely reduced our capabilities to wage war with each other to a simple national self defense force like Japan has or a unified alliance to work together. But alas, our starry-eyed gaze of the future at the time left us blind to the possibilities that greed and corruption would still hold power, and find a way to perpetuate conflict. If anything, the world of Starship Troopers feels like a more realistic future than this one, where the soldiers made to fight these pointless wars are the ones to turn things around on the greedy and corrupt politicians, and instill an age of unified "peace".
Dr. smith was the extension of them/the reason for the family getting lost in space to begin with. The sequel would have had the Robinsons arriving in Alpha Prime, but finding out that the global sedition had already taken it over.
I like it too It isnt good, but aint horrible either Just as I like the Alien Vs Predator, Daredevil, Sound of Thunder and others, I think all of those are pretty cool :0
This movie was great for its time, back in 1998. The acting was great too, with a heavy-duty all-stars made up of William Hurt, Gary Oldman, Heather Graham, Mimi Rogers, etc. However, the audience did not seem to accept the portrayal of Dr. Smith as an evil being, as opposite to the original TV-series.
This was average for a film in the 90's but it really holds up in the desert we call cinema these days. I can't remember the last decent sci-fi movie we've had. Probably Guardians of The Galaxy tbh.

Though the model doesn't appear in this scene, I remember reading that they made a physical model of the Jupiter (2?) and then scanned it in. I guess at least that gives the benefit of being able to achieve more complex shots, but with the near-realism of a true physical model. CG does seem to look best when used to enhance something that is in the real word (i.e. tangible).
The one good thing is that the actor, Lennie James who played Jeb...his carreer is still going strong, he is in TWD series and so on :) Hes in the first episode as well as the one called "Clear".
