Having just read your comment, I will say that would be awesome 😎 if it turned out this was in fact a movie Joey was doing and it wound up making him a huge celebrity!

Remember in this version of Earth the whole planet is way too polluted to live on anymore, and Mr. Robinson calls Mrs. Robinson, "my wife". These are not exactly the brightest bulbs here.
I think it was a cool way to include an easter egg referencing the original Jupiter 2 rather than an attempt at realism. If they wanted realism, there would likely be dozens of Jupiter ships, all with different families, and all launched from space. As it was in the Netflix series.
@@stuartcastle2814 Agreed! The Jupiter 2 was the delivery vehicle for the new Jupiter to launch into space, as it doesn't look like it was designed to be launched from a pad.
The reason everyone hates this movie is because is because it wasn't like the original tv show. If you look at it as if it's its own movie I thought it was a cool storyline.
I thought this movie wasn't too bad, either. I don't think it deserves the hate that it gets. The concept of Jupiter 1 being the exterior launch vehicle with Jupiter 2 "shedding" it was a clever way of showing a touchstone to the original. It's too bad Matt LeBlanc's career kind of petered out after Friends. This should have been his breakout role. Unfortunately, people just couldn't help but think of Joey when they watched it. :/
This movie was hated because of the whole spider smith thing. It was cheesy as shit and the CGI was terrible. Everything else was great though, exactly what a movie should be, pure entertainment.
One thing the original show had going for it is that the Robinsons LOVED each other. It was the kind of family you'd like to be in, or have for a friend.
Another Ebert inaccuracy. Themes and incidents from the orig. show are seeded all throughout this movie; the producer and writers definitely saw it and incorporated stuff form the best episodes. The runaway robot; the isolated ship they board; the "fake"/demolished Jupiter 2, etc. They claimed to have done so at press events, and it's obvious they did.
I never watched Friends but I'd heard of LeBlanc and thought he was just some soapy character, but I was pleasantly surprised to see he really knows how to act tough in LIS and just about stole the show...:) One favourite line was when he was asked if he was a war hero- "Well yes actually" he replied..:)
Did anyone notice the outer shell used to break Earth's atmosphere was paying homage to the old ship used in the original Lost in Space TV series. They have the same design.
The saucer shape of the J1/booster was deliberate, to prevent the Global Sedition from observing the true details of the J2, from which they could have learned key information and used it against the program (and/or: to speed development of their own ship to Alpha Prime -- remember, it's a race). The saucer shell also served as a layer of physical protection -- like standoff armor -- for the J2 as it was being built, and all the way up to orbit. The chemical rockets that get it up there were the decision of a committee, which selected the most-reliable way of doing the job -- one which did not needlessly disclose the capabilities of the J2's engines or the ship's performance to the Sedition's prying eyes. You've got to put the whole thing in its operational context to find out why they made the design decisions they did. Not all of this could be explained on film, but they all make sense given the backstory and the ultra-high stakes involved.
@@CaptureCat88 yeah no shit dude, but no need to passively dismiss the dude who went out of his way to write a neat little, in-universe, plausible explanation why the shell/booster of the J2 looks like the most inefficient spacecraft design ever.
The Jupiter II was really cool. Although I'll say that it was a great fan service to show the Jupiter I in saucer shape like the show, the saucer look is kind of outdated. Great movie, by the way.
Somehow, I doubt that. Though I will not deny that the Jupiter II is a memorable ship, this movie was clearly trying to update the show to fit the times, and the old ship would not have meshed with the very 90's aesthetic of the movie. I personally think that the fact they included it at all was a nice touch.
The Jupiter II taking off like a space shuttle? And then just as the music swells, that unique look of the ship---with its whirling lights, saucer shape, and oh-so-cool engine sound---morphs into some sort of ugly-ass ellipsoid blob?
I used to have it hard for the younger girl back when I was a kid. I don’t quite understand a mission of this undertaking consisting of pretty much a family plus one unrelated individual and with such a small crew at that.
It made more sense back in the 1960s when the show was made. The "family adventure" plot was still pretty popular. So later iterations of LiS get away with doing that because it'd be weird. Kind of like how both Lost in Space and Star Trek still get away with having the crew zip around in a flying saucer in the 21st century.
Great movie. On my top 10 list of sci-fi space travel movies to watch. The one thing, but a small thing. How come they didn't tuck the Robinsons in cryo until after takeoff and breaking into orbit first just to make sure everything was running good. I am not gonna let anyone put me to sleep until we successfully break orbit. I'm just saying. Executing a slingshot maneuver through the sun to escape its gravity and get back on track was brilliant. Robots opening scene "destroy the Robinson, destroy the ship" would have made a great action theme ride at Universal or Disneyland.
I also like the fact that while major West just trying to put the moves on Judy her father Professor Robinson see this and I kind of wish he would say him major back to your station.
I always love a good launch scene in a movie, but I keep getting hung-up on the insane amount of atmospheric resistance that launch angle must have generated (you know, understanding that it's a complete work of fiction)
@@macwyll it's absolutely possible if you apply Soviet MiG engineering principles to it, by which I mean "Put a big enough engine on it, even a brick will fly."
This movie was made even more believable by the fact that Joey Tribiani was the bossman pilot of that garage kept, interstellar spaceship parked up on the roof of their downtown condo.
IMO, the only thing about this movie that was remotely reminiscent of the original TV show were the names they used for the characters. As a stand alone movie, it was ok, but for me, in trying to modernize the Robinson family, they simply ruined it.
It was cool that Joey finally made it out of commercials, tv soaps and into movies. Wonder if this made his career? And does he still comm with his friends back in NY now that he’s a movie star?
Two problems here. One for most fans of LIS the Jupiter 2 and the robot were the best part of the series, it’s like looking at a vintage car that was a dream from the past and you relive that moment in your life when it played an important roll ...so without those two nesalgic elements it was just another scfi movie...I do wish someone would remake the series right.....
the only modification for the Jupiter 2 should have been the original ship design but bigger, like what they showed here ...but ...they had to blow it up to reveal this turd...and the robot modification was horrible also...walked out of the theater very disappointed

That's got to be the least aerodynamic way to launch into space from earth. That's a ship designed for maximum drag. No wonder it launched so high up!
